Stopped by Luca Delicatessen in San Francisco and this sandwich was SO good I literally forgot to take a picture before I started eating it I got the toasted caprese sandwich and added peppers , 10/10. Everything tasted super fresh, the bread was perfectly toasted, and adding the peppers gave it that extra kick it needed. Simple sandwich but seriously so good. Service was quick and friendly, and I loved the old-school Italian deli vibe inside. Definitely feels like one of those classic SF spots you stumble across and end up wanting to come back to. Love having a great sandwich shop in our son's neighborhood as it is so convenient to pop in and pick up great food. Today (Saturday) there was a line 7 deep. Lucca makes great sandwiches, we particularly like the chicken pesto on Dutch crunch bread. Generous sized sandwiches, we certainly could split one but happy with leftovers. Delicious deli sandwiches with fresh baked bread and piled on with a ton of meat! The sandwiches are huge and almost impossible to eat on your own, so make sure you have someone to share with. You grab a number after you walk in and wait your turn to order and pay. Then you take your food to go because there's no seating unless you are lucky enough to grab the bench right outside the store. This is classic hole-in-the-wall deli although well known. I came for a late lunch so it wasn't at all busy. I was helped almost immediately. It was my first time so I went with the Italian #1. Stopped by this place when I was walking around the area and looking for a nice sandwich. Honestly not that impressed by it. Their veg sandwich selection wasn't anything noteworthy(they only had like 2) and customization seemed confusing. I got the regular veg sandwich which had way too much cheese in it and honestly lacking in flavor. I swear they put atleast 6 slices of cheese so all I tasted was that, which came out to be 17$ with tax which is crazy steep for a local deli. Also not to mention they charge 2$ extra to get it toasted?? My son ordered a hot coppa sandwich with a pesto sauce on focaccia that has my mouth watering even now!! The meats are thin sliced but they do not skimp! The flavor profiles were absolutely perfect Ambiance: again very authentic old school Italian delicatessen with employees working in a small space but very well together to create the most wonderful sandwiches and other foods. Lucca is a cozy deli in one of the major shopping streets of the Marina. Upon entry, please take a number from their stack of number cards and wait for them to call your number. Should take around 5 min. I ordered their #1 Italian combo which is an elevated classic Italian sandwich. They add dark green lettuce to it and some good-sized Italian peppers. I took this delicious sandwich to a nearby park and enjoyed every bite, especially the bread. I don't know which is the bread they gave me since they didn't ask what I wanted but I'm going to guess it's a soft Italian roll. Maybe others can chime in and let me know what the default is. The bread is mildly flaky on the outside and soft inside. Definitely worth the trek from the peninsula to here and would get this one again. read more

I doordashed some sandwiches from Lucca.. my pregnant friend wanted a classic chicken salad sandwich, but I accidentally ordered the Chutney sandwich. There was a hormonal meltdown and I felt SO bad! Fast forward to today: it's her bday and I doordashed her the correct sandwich Anyway, back to my review for Lucca. This place is one of my favorite sandwich shops EVER!! Sometimes I watch a PBS cooking show with local chef Joanne Weir. In one episode, she visited her favorite deli, and it looked like the type of popular spot you'd find in Philly or the Lower East Side in NYC. That was what prompted me to head to the Marina because I rarely venture into this tony neighborhood. Just not my scene unless I'm hanging out at the Presidio. It was quite the packed shop with plenty of delectables in their long display case...salads, sausages, pastas, roast chicken, cheese. Customers pre-order the ravioli for the holidays. Clearly it must be good. I didn't know there was a number ordering system until an aggressive Karen grabbed four numbers in front of me for her and her friends who had not shown up yet. There was no place to eat it here, so I sauntered over to the courtyard next to the library where I found a free bench. Stopped in for a sandwich after some shopping in the area- been here a few times before and the sandwiches always hit. It is like a deli store filled with a big sandwich and fresh meat/salad counter as you enter- you need to pick up a number at the counter and wait until called to order as it's always busy. Got the "PORK-ETTA" this time round to try something new. It was so flavorful- perfect balance of meat and peppery arugula- and the bread oh my gosh so good and fresh. I like how they add oil (i think) to the sandwiches- gives the bread that extra little kick to bring all the flavors together. Wonderful little shop too for any jars/pasta/ready made meals you want to pick up while waiting for the sandwiches. I am so happy I found this solid sandwich shop- top 3 in SF for me. It's a busy, Italian deli where they make the sandwiches fresh to order and let me tell you that Pat Burrell is a THICK one. They added a generous serving of meat, the ingredients are fresh and so that sandwich was delicious. I am such a fan. They also have giant pickles in a giant jar- pickle was also phenomenal. For a sweet treat, they sell Baci (a chocolate with hazelnut) and fortune inside. They have drinks in a deli fridge.
