No doubt about it... I mean no "boot" about it.... Local is a great place to come in South Edmonton Common. Come to Local and enjoy a drink in a fun boot glass. The patio is a nice option to come to or my favourite is the table just in front of the glass garage door (it's a bit quieter). Food can be pricey but the Baja tacos are a big hit. I love the food at local and service is good. I have been here at least 5-10 x and every single time the music has been way too loud. Obnoxiously loud. It's incredibly distracting and very frustrating when it's just dinner or lunch time, not late at night. And it doesn't matter if your in the dining or bar area. Wondering where the parties at on a Friday night... it's definitely this place! I haven't been to Local since it was OPM. OPM was probably my favourite restaurant in the city so I was really hesitant to go here and be disappointed. OPM had some fantastic dishes that were very different and likely set the bar much to high for any restaurant to follow suit. I liked that the drinks were served in mason jars, the mojitos are really great and I did enjoy the atmosphere as well as the food. It's just not OPM .... I've been to The #Local a few times and I've had a couple misses, but today I had no serious issues. To get our drinks was a bit of a wait because I guess our table section got switched so no knew who's table we were, but as soon as a waitress came she was more then awesome to make up for the mistake. My husband and I were at Local South Common last night. We were asked to seat ourselves then we were told our waitress would be here shortly. The waitress came over and took a portion of our order then returned with the drinks. We then ordered the appetizer and ordered the main meal thereafter. I had the chicken pot pie that actually tasted pretty good till I got to the part that tasted like SOS pads! I'm not one to complain but it actually left me feeling sick! I brought it to the attention of the waitress who told the manager who seemed too afraid to come over and speak to us himself! As we watched the waitress communicate our concerns to the manager he then sent her back to tell us how "it's not possible the dishes are all washed in a dishwasher and are not handled by human hands!" That's fair! I then continue eating my chicken pot pie, but eventually gave up halfway through, as the taste of SOS was overwhelming. The waitress politely compensated us for the appetizer not because the pie was off, but because we were repeat customers. We politely paid our bill and left feeling a little hungry!! I'm sure this was a one time event and it would have been more meaningful if the manager had spoken to us directly. Not all people are assholes!! read more

I was a major fan of OPM and the 7 flavor beef and sad to see it go. However, I am also enjoying frequenting Local and sampling their rotating draft beer menu. The deluxe burger tasted super fresh and "mouth-wateringly" delicious. My taste buds weren't crying! I especially enjoyed the fruity beer they had on rotation - 4-way Fruit. It wasn't super sweet, like a Fruli, but definitely refreshing since it had some sparkling water properties to it. The rotation gives you an opportunity to try and sample and it's just plain fun. Also, on another occasion that I visited Local, I thoroughly enjoyed their garlic steak sandwich. It was grilled just right to my medium rare order, was juicy, and the garlic butter finished it perfectly. I highly recommend. Next time, I want to try one of those red boots I see going around - the Caesar looks an awful lot like the one from the Pint, complete with a pepperoni stick! Still looks like I'd enjoy it none-the-less. PS did you know they allow kids in this place? I thought it was just during brunch hours but on this Friday night, there was little boy and his pops enjoying some fries. The waitress confirmed that they do allow this. Interesting. PPS. Took a group of American's here who were in town on business. We stayed at the bar to drink and eat appetizers. Bar tender was nice and friendly, and always willing to pour a small glass of draught beer if we wanted a taste before ordering a pint. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed with their draught selection, especially the local beers they seem so proud of. The American's were willing to try everything, but reverted back to Budweiser pretty quick. Appetizers were very standard and didn't do anything a hundred other places already do. Calamari was over-cooked. I liked how laid-back the place felt, and felt pretty comfortable there. The place wasn't very busy, even on a Saturday night. The bar seemed like an okay place for single people to hang out. One drunk girl who looked and acted exactly like Deena from Jersey Shore was making the rounds and hitting on any guy in the place. The bartender was very skilled in keeping her from being too harassing. The downside to this place came at the end of the night when we asked for the bill. A different bartender had taken over half way through our visit, so we settled up with the first one. But the second one seemed to think he could get away with tacking on the first 7 drinks we had ordered onto our second bill. This led to a lengthly dispute over our charges, dispite us having the receipt from the first tab. I'd say we literally spent a good ten minutes arguing with this fool of a bartender. When I finally gave up and asked to speak to the manager, the bartender refused to bring him/her out to come talk to us and continued to argue with us for a few minutes longer until he finally agreed to not charge us for what we'd already paid for. Lucky for him, the American's were in a good mood and still tipped him well. If it wasn't for that moron behind the bar we would have had a good experience and I'd probably go back, although I definitely think the old OPM format was much more enjoyable. Although the Local is quite nice looking, unfortunately the food and the service that came with the decor was not. We went here with a medium-sized group on a Friday night and were pretty disappointed. There were several problems with the food; my friend's chicken burger was undercooked and had to be sent back, the appetizers somehow arrived after all of the meals, the nachos were quite soggy. Our waitress was preoccupied with another table and was incredibly hard to flag down and she had a hard time splitting the bills at the end (even though we had given prior warning when we arrived). read more

Me and a couple girlfriends were thinking about having a few patio drinks and decided to check out local! It's a very laid back place with a beautiful patio. The service was a little slow at first, but once we go our first drinks everything ran smoothly. They have a great menu for sharing and the food came out quick! After a few drinks and some food I didn't cringe when the bill was brought by. I thought everything was reasonably priced for the quality of food. Would most likely go back again more than once and would suggest this place to anyone looking for a chill place to sit down for a couple drinks. read more

Just when I thought that my reviewing ambitions were at a close, I stumbled across this terrific place for Saturday Brunch. I just had made a purchase at The Brick, and was planning to see an early movie, was feeling very sorry for myself because I was spending the weekend alone again. Looking across the street from the movie theatres I noticed a sign 'Brunch'. Because I was on foot, taking the bus, I was feeing really sorry for myself and I definitely deserved a Brunch on a Saturday morning; I walked into the LOCAL for the first time ever at around 10:45am. I loved to find an open kitchen with 3 hot chefs working away in the kitchen, and a very friendly server. Taking my seat I was thinking 'Oh No' Bar food brunch, reading the menu gave me a nice surprise. I found my absolutely fav brunch food 'RANCHOS HUEVOS', is something I order no matter where I travel as a brunch dish. I recall the exciting layers of flavours when I was in Guadelajara, MX. I was not disappointed, the hot chefs at the LOCAL made my dish sing, the 'RANCHOS HUEVOS', (I capitalize, because they were exceptionally great) was like a party in my mouth, it took me directly to Guadelajara, MX and the authentic flavours that one can experience while traveling. The taste of the fresh adobo sauce surrounding the eggs, beans, cheese and corn flour soft tortillas made my total day. Just a note, Chef Adam, which I am not sure was there along with the 3 hot chefs need a great big hug for making my day a great day! read more

Menu small in size with a nice selection. Unfolds like a road map. Crispy Calamari - excellent! Aptly named "Share Size" as this is not a meal and to be fair is not so large that you cannot eat your meal. Server recommended fish or chicken tacos - order individuals for $5 a piece. Lamented my choice of Halibut and Chips as it arrived and tacos for someone at another table. Halibut portions were small (theme here) and portion of chips - yep, small. Small spoonful of slaw. All served on a small tray. Got it yet? Fish was hot and fresh when served, which was pretty quick. Good flavour and not over-battered. Skinny fries are nice but I was in no danger of getting fat from the portioning. All around good, but wow, small. Did I mention small? read more

Customer service is definitely lacking. Had a terrible server on the patio who really didn't care about their job. She sat on the chair beside us to take our orders-- not professional at all. We got our food right away but as soon as we needed something she ignored us. We asked for the bill. She didn't automatically bring the machine so she asked us if we needed it. We said yes. Took 20 minutes of us sitting and waiting while watching her walk by and look at us, taking care of her other tables. We got fed up and went to the bar to pay our bill. Our server then came up to us with a machine and said "I'm here" in a not friendly way. Took both our payments, didn't ask us if we wanted a receipt and didn't thank us or wish us a good day. She just walked away saying nothing. Let's just say we didn't tip because of the horrible service. Food was great but their customer service isn't the greatest. read more

Always have amazing food at this place. The service is usually tolerable... However today was a bit odd. We went for brunch and after sitting for 10 seconds, realized we were sitting in the middle of a staff meeting. Very uncomfortable. The 'manager' was reading (loudly and in a grade school manner) from a pile of papers for what felt like our entire meal. We decided to try this place for the Canada gold game. After standing in line for 30 mins in the extremely cold weather, and 15 minutes before the game, a girl finally yells out the door that if we don't have reservations, then there is no room for us. I thoroughly enjoy this place. I too was a fan of OPM before it closed but wasn't disappointed with it's replacement. The service is very friendly and prompt, the patio has a great atmosphere and the best part in my opinion are the fish tacos. If a place has fish tacos on the menu, I usually order them and this place I think has the best ones. make sure to try them next time. I had the pleasure of experiencing LOCAL in Vancouver so I was really looking forward to its arrival in Edmonton. Let's just say I was a little more than disappointed - never have I had such bad service. The waitress was extremely rude and inattentive. She actually forgot to bring my beer and when I inquired for it, rather than apologize she rolled her eyes and walked away. Perhaps she was having an off day, but she was treating my friend and I as if we were a HUGE inconvenience to her. The food was greasy and nothing special. I would not go back there. read more

Today was our second time visiting Local and we WILL NEVER BE GOING BACK. We thought we would give it another shot after our first bad experience there, but today proved to be a much worse experience. Today, much like the first time, the service was horrible. I had to ask for a coffee refill three times, similar to having to ask for ketchup 3 times on our prior visit. Our server was never around and when she was billing us she was extremely disinterested. Our food took a good 35-45 minute to come out, the same as last time. When it did come out it came in spurts, my plate coming first with one eggs benny and then 3 other bennys and finally the last one, 10 minutes later. Four out of the six of us today ate the hash browns and were left with VERY upset stomachs afterwards, we think due to the amount of oil and onion/ spices they use in them. All of our eggs benedicts were cold to the touch, the same thing also happened on our last visit. The only plate worth mentioning was my steak and eggs, which while very tasty, my steak was also cold to the touch. My eggs were lukewarm, if that. My friend got 2 tomato slices for her benny and when the bill came, we saw a charge of $3.25 for them. When our server finally came around to take payment, we asked her about this and she tried to make us feel like idiots by telling us that it was a "special variety" of tomatoes and that was why they were expensive. The "special variety" was not ripe, still green, and was only two slices. We pointed this out and the server laughed at us and proceeded to take payment. As a server myself, if a customer complained about something so minute in the scheme of things I would take it off of the bill, no questions asked. Needless to say we were not impressed, will never be going back, and will be taking our business elsewhere. read more
