I think I found a new favourite dinner spot in South Common! I cannot believe that I have not tried this pub before. Thanks to a fellow Yelper, we stopped at this pub for dinner on a Friday night. We only waited ten minutes for a table on a rather busy Friday night, plus they gave us a full booth for only three people. Score! Their menus are great. I love the map of Edmonton and their other locations, as well as the simplicity of the waterproof paper. You'll understand when you see it. Food wise, I had the fish tacos which had been raved about. Let's just say, they passed the test! The beer battered fish tacos are layered with coleslaw, cilantro and salsa. Plus, you get fries on the side. There was so much food that I had to take some home. In less than a month, Local Public Eatery has went from spectacular to nightmare. Went back with friends and were disgusted with the lack of quality of food and service. On Saturday night, what is claimed as family friendly turned out to be one big hook up place for customers and staff. Wendy's fast food down the road would have served better food. This is a great spot! I stopped in for the first time yesterday with some friends who are regulars. It's a bit noisy, but that kind of adds to the fun vibe. Lots of big tables, and apparently this is also a good spot for board games. I saw they had a pretty good stash of games in the back, although no one was playing when I was there. They also have a shuffleboard table! The menu looked pretty good- lots of pub food AND all day breakfast, which I always appreciate. I had the fish tacos, which were just okay. They came with a huge helping of fries, which were great, but I would have liked to see some more ingredients in the tacos, like some avocado or peppers. Both my friends had burgers, and I would definitely order the same thing on my next visit! They looked amazing. The service was okay. They never did ask for our food order- we kind of had to chase our server down whenever we wanted something. I've been coming to this restaurant since it opened. Yesterday's brunch plate was a big disappointment. The first time I haven't been happy with my order. I ordered the braised beef and bacon hash. The potatoes were cooked so brown you couldn't tell the difference from the beef. They were really charred. But I couldn't find the beef. There was only three tiny pieces. I didn't find any bacon. I wanted to send it back but I didn't want to ruin my brunch with my friend who was treating me. Thank goodness for the perfectly cooked egg on top. I get that food costs have gone up. Maybe increase the cost of the dish because a meat eater like me is expecting more than three tiny cubes. The service was outstanding. Our waitress was attentive and prompt. The best burger I've had in Edmonton. The service is always fantastic, even on the busiest of nights. It gets crazy busy, but if you can get there early, you're fine. It's seat yourself most of the time. The patio is great. Always lots of sports on the TVs, it's actually an insanely cool place to be for hockey and football games. I've tried most things on their menu and not found anything I've disliked. My faves are their burgers, the chicken sandwich, wings, and the ceasar salad. They tip out their support staff very well, so we always try to tip extra. Seriously, the best service I've had, and we come here like once a week. It's never been bad. I went here around noon with my boyfriend and we had a great experience. It was pretty empty but we still enjoyed the atmosphere and how it looked inside. I got the veggie burger (probably has a different name, can't remember) and my boyfriend got the ahi tuna sandwhich. Both of us absolutely loved the food and couldn't wait to come back. Their mimosa was also very refreshing. Staff is very nice and attentive and I also got a kick out of the cooks in the back cracking jokes. DUDE, This place is saweet! I had super fun awesome times here the other night and if you don`t have super fun awesome times in your life you are so missing out. So its like...a pub. You walk in and seat yourself and good looking waitresses come and serve you, pretty chill. A great place to bring a date or to watch a hockey game, GO DETROIT!!!! :D My date and I started with the fried squid which was pretty tasty and had a nice kick to it if your into that, yum! My meal was the Drunken Chicken which was sooo good even for leftover lunch the next day, awesome! Except for the overload of onions..(Onions...my arch nemesis..) The menu is not very vast but its still has some pretty decent food to pick from. The best things about this place...The toilets flush themselves which is great for germaphobes like me, they have $4 glasses of wine..They do not tell you what the wine is as I guess they use whatever is leftover at the time, but who cares! A $4 glass of wine is still just that, a $4 glass of wine, life can`t get any better. They also have drinks...that come in glasses in the shape of freaking boots!! SO MUCH AWESOME! This was my first time here and I will visit it again. I was a huge fan of OPM and was devastated when it shut down. Then when I saw this place open up I was all MEH. I ventured here with my wife and two friends for an evening of booze and appetizers and I was impressed. The menu was nice and had a great selection of foods. The cocktail menu was well priced and had some cool concoctions. My wife and I decided to split the Huevos Rancheros. I've never had this before and we were in a mood for something different, so what the hell right? It was REALLY good. Eggs, beans, salsa, tortillas cheese on a plate? PFFT! What more can you ask for!!!! It was delicious and had the right amount of heat. The service there was great given it was a Friday night. Locals will know that South Common is a mad house on weekend evenings. Getting a table anywhere is based on luck and timing. Local was packed but we managed to find a table for the 4 of us. Our server was friendly, prompt and got our orders right. The food and drinks came out at a decent time, I couldn't have asked for anything more really. I want to head back to this place because my friend Russell said they have great burgers. I have to try one. read more

I went here for a birthday party on a cold December night, it had probably been a few years since I had stopped in before that. The place was packed to the gills and full of very attractive patrons so I'm a little bit upset that I hadn't been frequenting it! Service was great, especially considering how busy it was. Drinks were average price and tasted great. Food came quickly especially considering how busy it was. I liked how we could see into the kitchen, the cooks were busy and the space looked great. I didn't have a full meal so I don't think I can fairly give 5 stars but those who did eat said that the food was great. I've now come here 4 times and the biggest draw for me is the beer selection. All craft brews from all over including the 2 local breweries (Alley, Amber's) The food is excellent and definitely not your typical lazy pub grub. I highly recommend trying some of the items they "stole" from OPM. They have lots of flat screens all over and there really isn't a bad seat in the place to watch the game. The only downfall is due to the brick walls and low ceiling, it must be the loudest place in Edmonton. Definately don't go if your looking to have a conversation. read more

Big old nope for me. Like many here on Yelp I have to agree the service was horrible. I am not talking slow or inattentive. I'm talking straight up rude behaviour when I ask you to do your job - which is to make sure I'm getting the full 16 ounces of beer I am paying for. I could go on and on, but that's what it came down to for me. If I ask you to do something politely and all you can muster up in return is to snark, snort and sneer as you walk away from the table, I am not returning now, or ever, for your under poured beer and crappy service. Not even with a measuring cup to prove a point. Just make it right, please, and make that empty inch disappear. The food and drinks are great, but what really stands out here is the service. I love to sit near the door so I can watch the magic that happens in the open kitchen. The kitchen manager (I assume) does a great job of keeping his staff motivated and in good spirits. I don't know for sure, but I would imagine that they have fairly low turnover in the kitchen. Kudos to the chef and his awesome team! Let's see... what did we eat? I had a plain cheddar burger and it was so large I had to take half of it home (oh woe is me...). The burger was juicy and the fact that they use aged cheddar just puts it over the top for me. Absolutely amazing. My date had the Local Burger (I think that was what it was called). It had jalapenos and hot sauce. I didn't try it, but watching him sweat through it was incredibly entertaining. It smelled great too. For you non-local South Side Edmontonians, this establishment used to be a place called OPM. I'm still bitter that OPM isn't around, so I'm going to take it out on LPE. By wisely keeping the Drunken Chicken and 7 Flavoured Beef tucked away on the menu and grandfathering it from OPM, I come back to this place ONCE in a while. The rest of the menu is not worth talking about. Sure you got TV's and target the casual fine-dining crowd, but really I'd rather go to Joey's and sit in their lounge to watch a game along with better eats. read more

I got there and went to the bar, it was a big edmonton Oilers night. The manager noticed I was here to watch the Jay's game. The manager drey went above and beyond. Moved me from the bar and gave me my own table when the place was jam packed. Changed one of the TVs just for me and kept the rest on the oilers game. She checked in on me frequently and she totally made me feel at home. Because of drey I will come back a million times over and tell all my friends about it. Let's start with my bias. I worked at and love OPM (the pre-Local concept) and I miss that menu with my who food-belly-heart. I was remotely appeased when they had some old OPM menu items available to order. They are phasing them out more and more to a point where the whole thing will be lost. It's brutal. If I'm to simply look at Local for what it is and what it isn't (it's not OPM) I still have to say that I'm not all that into it. The burger was mediocre, the drinks options are not more interesting than any other pub and the shuffle board is just a lame gimmick. I rarely go to this pub and I will go even less often now that the OPM food options are disappearing. The whole experience is just 'meh!' But they'll sell a ton of booze so they'll stay open for a long time. read more

Been here a couple of times for some lunch, it's always super busy which is a good sign. Service is usually pretty good, food is good too. I found in the summer that there's loads of fruit flies which is a bit off putting. Their happy hour is probably one of the best I know. Nice place to stop in for a drink and some food. read more

We came here at the weekend to sit out on the patio and have some good food. I ordered the Crispy Chicken Sandwhich - which was divine, and a lemonade - which they still served to me "in a boot" so I got to feel like I was having a cocktail without actually having one! The service wasnt excellent - but it was good enough! The patio was a little cramped, but it was comfortable. I will go back here for my birthday to get the crispy chicken sandwhich again - im craving one!!!! We got a nice lunch for 2 for under $40 so we're not complaining! read more

This was my boyfriend and my favourite place to go every week. The servers remembered us, the food was great and we loved the drinks. Specifically we went there for the nachos all the time because they were AMAZING. Recently they changed the nachos and they are bad. We loved before that they were something we couldn't make at home and they were different from other restaurants. We got them recently now that there changed and there was a cheese sauce that tasted like warm cheese whiz on them, and they took off almost everything that made them good and switched it from chicken to beef. I understand chicken is more expensive then beef, but I would of rather they raised the price then changed them to something I can make in my microwave. I know there are many other tasty things on the menu but I crave the old nachos! read more

We had fully intended on giving Cora a try for breakfast this morning, but the lineup deterred us. So I pulled up my handy Yelp app for a recommendation and decided to give this a try as the menu didn't look too bad. Based on the Yelp reviews, I was expecting the worst, and came away pleasantly surprised. We enjoyed the morning sun on the patio. Sarah went for the vegetarian benny and I went for the traditional, with back bacon. Our eggs were poached in an a pot of boiling hot water, rather than those molds in the microwave that everybody seems to use in Edmonton. However, if you like a runny yolk, I would suggest ordering them soft instead of medium. The Hollandaise was made from scratch as well, but could use a bit more lemon. And the breakfast potatoes were coated in something delicious and fried to perfection. If you need to be in the South Common Area, want brunch, and also want to avoid the lines at Cora, I recommend this place. And if you're looking to order a pint of beer, they have a decent selection of draft choices, including a number of local brews from Alley Kat, Amber's, and Yellowhead. read more

That said, the ambience sucks (way too loud when not crowded) and the food all seems to have some "funky" additions that don't go with the rest of the dish. Went there for the second time after trying the new brunch menu the week prior. This time around the food fell flat. Breakfast sandwich came out soggy and looked terribly unappetizing. My wife said the egg was over cooked, and the whole sandwich fell apart. I had the sausage and eggs which also seemed to lack attention to detail- my eggs weren't as I asked for them and the sausage was lukewarm at best. The best part of today's brunch was the coffee. The Drunken Chicken is definitely the choice dish on their menu. The Atmosphere is great, service is excellent but THE FRUIT FLYS! Went there for brunch with some friends. Service was great, place was bumping but man, oh man, the calamari we ordered was definitely "local". (insert groan here). As in, by the freezer burnt, pitiful and flavourless portion, you can tell we are the farthest thing from an ocean. It tasted like a chip I found in the couch the other day. The portion size was maybe 10-12 small shrivelled pieces. I think the chef was just about as hungover as our friends were. Couldn't think of any other reason why he would send that out. However, the fried egg sandwich was delicious. Great flavours, egg cooked perfectly and really hit the spot. Would definitely go again for that sandwich. read more

I really enjoyed my experience at Local! I thought everything was enjoyable. One thing that really impressed me, was the playlist they had playing. I know that's a weird thing to point out? But it adds to the atmosphere. I'm always a fan of good service, and I received that here. Our server was very interactive and cheerful. She engaged in conversation and made us feel comfortable. I always say 'A server is a sales person' and she was very knowledgeable of the menu. They didn't have guacamole on the menu, but the Chef made me some anyway. Now that's great customer service! Now the food, we ordered a bunch of appy's and they were great! I loved the arugula with the calamari. It was a nice touch to some simple dishes. Even the nachos were different from what you find everywhere in Edmonton. Great nachos are hard to come across. I am going back to Local for more happy hours more often! read more

I came here for appies and drinks with my best gf after a failed attempt at getting into a movie... On a Tuesday (oops what was I thinking). I had zero expectations I just needed wine and warmth! I actually was pleasantly surprised by this place. First of all it was PACKED and on a Tuesday and speaking purely from a "wing woman" perspective there were a lot of nice looking people in there. I only say this because I often hear my girlfriends complaining about how over they are of the usual spots and crowds to meet people. Tah Dah! New spot?! Truthfully the service is OK but it's a sports bar so anybody expecting anything different needs to vamoose. I ordered the nachos to split and there was enough for 4 of us even though we were only 2. The nachos were not at all like bar nachos btw. The way they had the sauce drizzled and the placement of toppings they looked like gourmet nachos, if ever there was such a thing, and tasted even better. Sorry, we didn't have a good experience here. We both ordered burgers and fry's . Burgers tasted like sawdust,had to much filler. For 20.00 an order we expected burgers to be flavourful and juicy, not. We both ate just part of the burger. So a pretty expensive for a meal that we didn't eat. Local is a nice sports bar that we stopped at for lunch. The meals were nothing too memorable, but considering we were there at lunch time on a Sunday, and it was packed, service was really quick. We sat ourselves and I had a little thought that the servers may not notice us, but we were greeted within a few minutes by the friendly staff. They had a great Motown playlist on and we sat out on the patio, which was nicely shaded. Overall great experience. I had been craving happy hour on the patio for a week now. And today it 75 degrees and I was there! I got the ahi poke with tortilla chips. The poke was delicious. I'm sad I didn't love this place, because like many other reviewers, I was a fan of OPM. I think the reason is OPM offered something different, whereas LOCAL feels a lot like our local pubs that are already in place (The Pint, Hudson's, etc.). It has a bit of a unique spin on food compared to most classically Canadian pubs, and I really enjoyed my Ahi Tuna club sandwich. The mason jars for decor and maps-as-menus were nice individual touches, but I don't think this place made enough of an impression for me to seek it out again. It's not bad, and if you go you'll enjoy decent food and good service, but LOCAL is ultimately forgettable. read more

This is my go to place for dinner with friends and family. The volume of the music played is very loud and it can be hard to hold a conversation but the service is usually fast and attentive and the food is typically very good. The fish tacos are a lot larger than what other restaurants offer, and the fries are thinly cut - just the way I like them. The beer on tap is always flavourful and never flat, but the cocktails usually have too much ice for my liking. Definitely recommend this place if you know what to order! read more

I've been to Local a couple of times now, both in the summer and winter. Their patio in the summer is nice, despite being in the parking lot of a Best Buy; you can watch people coming and going, and there are lots of umbrellas to shade the sun if needed. My most recent meal was for dinner on a weeknight and the place was pleasantly hopping. I agree with the other reviewers that comment on slow service; it didn't hamper my enjoyment of the meal, but things could have been prompter. I find the food to be in hearty portions, and well prepared. I went outside my normal food "box" and ordered a crispy chicken sandwich, with BBQ sauce and coleslaw, and it was fabulous; so tasty, not too greasy and big enough to take half home for lunch the next day. There are lots of TVs for watching sports, and a great drink menu. I'm looking forward to going back on a weekend to try some of the cocktails. Also bear in mind that even when not crowded, it was very loud - don't head here for a quiet or intimate dinner. read more
