Chips & Salsa ($5), Brussel Sprouts ($9)
Wendi K.

We came here for a girls happy hour and sat on the patio :) We ordered a flatbread ($14), Brussel Sprouts ($9), Salmon Taco ($5), and a few drinks ($8 each). Everything was fine! Nothing mind blowing. The staff are super nice and the interior looks gorgeous.

Great spot for happy hour! Super spacious restaurant with high ceilings and a bright, airy atmosphere enhanced with some thriving plants and modern farmhouse style decor. Also a large outdoor area as well. Happy hour menu includes a large selection of food and drinks for great deals. For 3 people we got 4 items and it was more than enough. Everything was delicious including the cocktails. We were seated at 5:40 and our server made sure we were able to get our orders in in time to take advantage of happy hour before it ended at 6. Definitely would come back.

MEYER LEMON & RICOTTA PANCAKES (SAT/SUN ONLY)

What an excellent Father's Day brunch! We had the best time at Local Union 271 this morning. Such a wonderful way to start the day. Our server Cristal was amazing, and the sweetest surprise was the complimentary blueberry-lemon-ricotta pancake from manager Jesse. Highly recommend this spot if you want your breakfast/brunch to feel special!

Brussels sprouts were the tastiest thing we had. Everything else was bland (it tasted like the seasonless version of the food bar at Whole Foods). Portions are large. Service was ok. It's nice if you want to bring a pet with you as they have bowls for them to drink water. Ambience was relaxing. I doubt I'll ever return again.

Close up of inner burger - was a fork-and-knife situation for me, but delicious.

Great service when I called to modify our Open Table reservation from Kellie - she was so friendly and helpful. When we arrived for dinner, a few of our party had dropped out, but the staff was very easy going and accommodating. The dining room is very pleasantly decorated with dark woods, light walls, high ceilings and chic light fixtures. Farmhouse chic. If you are sitting inside, note that the high top tables are stools without backs (which our host advised us of when we were choosing a table). We sat at a low top inside with comfy chairs. Our reservation was at 7:45 on a Thursday and the inside was about half-full, with very few people sitting on the patio (it was a little chilly outside). After we sat down, it was about 15 minutes until we saw a server. When he came he asked us if we were ready to order. One of our group asked if we could order drinks first and he said "Oh, sure." But by that time it was near 8:00 so group consensus was to go ahead and order our drinks and dinner together. The drinks came out first (I ordered the Bombay Sapphire Negroni, $16) and noticed the cocktails were looking a little scant - not that I had a way to measure them but, for example, the Manhattan 271 ($17) was served in a standard bar coupe glass and it was about half full. When I ordered a second drink, a Hendricks martini up ($17), it was also about half full. Taste of our cocktails was good. The rest of our party ordered wine by the glass, of which they had a good selection and I thought was fairly priced and looked like about a 6 oz pour: Justin Cab $16, Noble Vines Sauv Blanc $13. Everyone enjoyed their food and the portions were good. Favorites were the Bucatini Carbonara ($23.50), the Shaking Beef Tenderloin (Asian-inspired stir fry beef with sugar snap peas, cherry tomatoes, and brown turmeric rice, $29.50), and the 1/2 pound Duck Fat Local Burger (cooked perfectly to order med rare, with Gouda, caramelized onions - sautéed but still pale and crunchy so not so caramelized, garlic aioli, lettuce, tomato, bread & butter pickles, served with fries or garden salad. The salad was generous and well dressed in a sweet, tangy vinaigrette, $24.50). Our server came back once while we were eating, but the carafes of water were never refilled and it was quite a stretch after that before we saw him again. When he brought the bill he did point out that there is an 18% service charge added to parties of 6 or more. He offered to split the check in equal amounts with credit cards if we preferred, and that they don't usually take cash - but when one of our party asked if he had any change for a large bill he went next door to change it for her. That was a nice gesture for ending the experience on a positive note.

Stopped by on Monday night for a drink and a small bite before meeting up with some friends. It was early, around 5:45, and both the bar and the dining area were pretty empty. There's plenty of seating inside and outside with nice decor and a good vibe. I sat at the bar and was one of four customers. The bartender greeted me quickly and took my order. He did not introduce himself, which is something I find all too common these days. Might also be a reason so many bars are struggling to have consistent regulars during the week. He was quick to give me my old-fashioned and the wings came out pretty quickly as well. The old-fashioned was on point, not the best but certainly met my expectations. For whatever reason, they do not serve cherries with their old-fashioned. I got the Thai chili wings. I really enjoyed the flavor and the wings themselves were fairly meaty. Five wings for $16 was definitely a bit pricey. Overall, they paired nicely with the old-fashioned. FYI for anyone looking, I did not see a happy hour menu, nor was one offered.

Nice restaurant, food was delicious and service was quick. I like how they had different seating options as well, high chairs, mid and low tables too.

CUP - SUMMER CORN SOUP
Mike R.

A colleague and I were looking for a spot to meet for dinner. I wanted something farm fresh, sort of what the Bay Area and California are known for. Local union 271 met the bill. We were able to sit outside on a beautiful evening with a little bit of breeze, outside of the noise, giving us the ability to actually have a conversation. This can be something rare to find in restaurants that only have indoor spaces. The menu is extensive, and everything was fresh, you can see from the pictures what we ordered. Based on the names of the items they probably change based on the season, which makes sense. The honey pig flatbread lived up to being both sweet and spicy, it didn't miss a beat. The Summer corn soup actually tasted like corn and it wasn't just using corn to hide some other flavor or try to make something else shined through. The fact that they have the larger pores of wine, a 10 ounce carafe., Makes it easy to drink by the class when you don't need a bottle. If it's a nice evening and you want fresh food, this is the place to go.

HOUSE TERIYAKI BOWL with shrimp
Adelina S.

We found this place while walking around looking for a spot with good food and drinks. After checking online, we decided to explore the restaurants in the area and came across this one. The restaurant looks really nice, and we sat in the bar area. Carlos was very friendly and welcoming. He recommended the Maracu-yeah! and the shrimp teriyaki bowl, and both were delicious. Everything was great, and the place has such a good vibe that makes you want to come back. I definitely recommend this place, and don't forget to say hi to Carlos!

I've been told it's very loud here. Is it too loud to have a business conversation?

It's super loud inside, but I imagine if you sat outside, you'd be fine.

Does this place have any affiliation with actual Unions? Is the staff unionized?

no and no

Does Local Union 271 still add a mandatory "Living Wage Surcharge" to their tabs? I saw no mention of it on their website or menu.

This is all over SF and common practice in the Bay Area.

As a speakeasy enthusiast myself I definitely agree to the fact that it is "hidden" but also it does kinda give corporate vibes a little bit - maybe we can say they "gentrified" the speakeasy experience which is honestly so funny for Palo Alto. But anyways I don't think a classification should stop you from visiting it. The food is actually surprisingly really good. We came with a pescatarian and honestly while the offerings for snacks were a bit slim, every option was really good. I feel like this was the first time where I understood the price even the the quantity is no where close to be desired. One shrimp is like $6 and I was like whoah. I'm fortunate to work nearby so I'll definitely visit this place a few times after work to blow off some steam... And the drinks! Yes they are good! They are also quite strong! Drinks are interesting and different, everything on the menu from the bites to drinks have a little Japanese fusion or influence going on. We pretty much tried every small plate on the menu. Most of it was delicious, a couple were just meh (katsu was not anything special, not was the duck meatball). Other than that, and over all, would highly recommend this spot in general. Btw the bar is from the same proprietor as the restaurant Protégé (across the street). Fun little bar for some music and drinks, they even have a disco ball.

I would say it feels like a tavern for wealthy noblemen in 1800s England. Allow me to say where it fell short for me, and then I'll sing my praises. The wine... tasted like wine. I don't have a particularly refined palate when it comes to that. The charcuterie board was a collection of expensive items that I am personally not into: miniature pickles (too sour), meat pâté (bland), and what I think were pickled red peppers. There was no cheese, which was highly disappointing; however, if that style of charcuterie suits you, go for it. The music did not match the ambiance at all. They really should play piano or smooth jazz, because the 2010s pop was honestly annoying. DESPITE ALL OF THIS, the crowd was the real pull. Everyone was either on a first date or was an interesting adult. This makes for fun people-watching and stimulating conversations. People were very willing to walk up and talk to strangers. I saw many people doing so, I felt welcome to do so, and people approached me to converse. So even though the food wasn't great, and the music was horrible, I will return funnily enough because the decor and the people were worth it.

We ordered chickpea panisse, French onion soup, goat cheese mousse, and the apple salad. Everything was delicious. My favorite was the chickpea panisse. It looked like fried tofu, but it was so delicately soft in the center. The aioli that came with it was great too. My second favorite was the goat cheese mousse. It was beautifully presented and a good balance of flavors. For main dishes, we got a variety of things. We got salmon, hanger steak, flat iron steak, and poulet roti. Everything was delicious. I think the flat iron steak was preferred over the hanger, but both were good. I thought the chicken was delicious. It seemed braised with a lot of flavor. It was a generous portion with a large salad. It was very well done. We also got a couple of sides of macaroni and cheese. Those didn't disappoint.
