This might sound like a dumb review, but something about my bartender at Scotty's impressed me. I went in on a recent Thursday at happy hour. There was one other guy at the bar. I asked for a shot and beer special, with a beyond burger, which was excellent. I added some cooked jalapenos to the burger. The bartender's name was Johnny, I believe. At some point, I dribbled ketchup on my shirt without noticing. Now, with only two low maintenance guests, most guys would probably be looking at their phone while waiting for us to ask for something. Johnny never did. He was right there with a cloth and a glass of seltzer to help me with my shirt stain. In other words, he was friendly and paying attention. That's valuable and welcome. Scotty's is a friendly space overall, and I like stopping in before a show at the Stanford Theater, for instance. read more

We stopped in last night for drinks and I enjoyed our experience! I've walked past Scotty's many times but this was the first time they've been open when I've been by since they seem to have limited hours. The bartender was quick to help us and super friendly. We both had regular margaritas and they were good! We had just come from dinner so we didn't order any food, but I'd like to try it in the future since it seems like good pricing, especially for the area. Came here on a whim. Was in Palo Alto with a friend and we were looking for a post dinner cocktail. Scotty's was nearby, so we decided to try it out. It's a small place, and I don't remember seeing it here before - so might be new, or I never paid attention. It was a Sunday evening and there weren't too May folks in here at 9pm. Might be the rain was downing things a bit. They definitely know their whiskey and have a range from budget to rare - spotted some hard to find Pappy's on the top shelf. The regular drams are priced normal for the peninsula, with multiple options below $20. Did not get a chance to try the cocktails - so will probably be back for that. Super laid back dive bar in the middle of downtown Palo Alto. Drinks are cheap and they have basic cocktails but it's a great spot! They also have a food menu or chips! You're greeted upon arrivals and drinks come by quickly. Unlike other dive bars I've been too the floors and seats are clean :) Would visit again! read more

A nice little dive bar downtown my friend and I came right when it opened and the cook wasn't there yet (they arrived soon after us) so there was a tiny delay with food but it wasn't a bother, I enjoyed my drink and conversation as I waited. The food and drinks was relatively good and very affordable, I loved how moist yet crispy the buffalo wings were-happy hour is clutch. I Didn't catch the bartender's name (he mentioned he was new) but he was cheerful and attentive (first thing he did was give us a cold glass of water without me asking/as we cooled down) he also allowed my friend to park her bike indoors since there was nowhere to lock it outside which I appreciated. It's really the little things that makes all the difference to me. Before we left if started to get more busy, I imagine plenty of people come here. Big drop off in quality and a corresponding increase in price. Their cocktails taste a bit watery, and feel rushed... which I can't justify given their $11 and up price points. Seems like a very nice dive bar. They serve food albeit its a lil pricey but the taste isnt bad. They have some cocktails on the list, but I dont think any were especially great/creative. They have a decent selection of beer but nowhere near as craft as I would like it. Food: Sliders- You get three of em. Mmm theyre decent in size and you get a side of fries. 12 bux is a lil pricey but not over the top. Wasnt particularly tender/juicy but it was definitely adequate. Ribeye Cheesesteak- So not sure what happened here...My vegeterian friend ordered a grilled cheese and i guess they misheard us and we got this. This was actually pretty bomb. I wouldnt say $14 bomb but probably $10 bomb lol. But if you have to eat here...id probably get this again. Overall, i dont think anything really wowed me. as a frequent visitor to downtown PA, i had walked by this bar many a time and seen their happy hour menu adorning the front window. unfortunately, each time i walked by, it was either way before or after happy hour. so when i was asked to select a venue for happy hour with my two girlfriends, i did not hesitate to suggest scotty's. here's the skinny on their HH, which runs daily from 4.30-6.30 pm: **$3 well drinks **$3 bottled beer **$5 wine glasses **half off all appetizers **rotating drink specials we arrived a tad before 4.30 since we were eager, and as expected, it was pretty quiet inside, as we were the first customers. personally, i'm a fan of quietness as it allows for better conversation, without me straining my ears or getting a headache from the excessive noise! we ordered the following appetizers: 1. taco trio: 1 beef + 1 shrimp + 1 chicken with a side of salsa, guacamole and iceberg lettuce. didn't try the beef, but shrimp and chicken were good, fresh. salsa and guacamole were ok. since my husband and i frequent authentic mexican restaurants, we can usually distinguish between salsa and guacamole that is excellent vs those that are just average. 2. shrimp ceviche with side of chips: the shrimp aspect was very good, definitely mixed in well with the remaining ingredients. the tortilla chips were standard. again, i've had crispy with just-the-right-amount-of-oil tortilla chips elsewhere, so these were just ok. 3. chicken quesadilla: generous portion of chicken with ooey gooey cheese, garnished with fresh peppers and onions, sandwiched in a flour tortilla. total food bill? $14.50 to split between the 3 of us. can't complain about the prices! especially in downtown PA! i ordered a glass of white wine to swish down the apps, but for the life of me i can't remember which wine i chose! it was very good though as i still remember the crisp, cool notes of apple in my mouth. my two friends each ordered cocktails, and having taken a sip of each of theirs, i can definitely say that their mixed drinks are STRONG! one sip sent me to the moon! good thing i ordered the wine, else i'd have had trouble driving home after! overall, drinks were good, definitely on the strong side, but the food was very average, nothing special, i'm afraid. it did get really loud around 6pm, and quite full inside, which made for difficult conversation, so that is when my girls and i wrapped it up, asked for the check and headed out. for the happy hour prices alone, i would definitely return. and if i'm not the designated driver, i will definitely order one of the stiff cocktails next time! read more

Scotty's is cool, it has a very laid back vibe to it. Good drinks and solid food. A great option to hang out with buddies and chat about the world and life! Tried a Scotch called Lagavulin 16 which is new my favorite based on the recommendation of Scott (owner/bar tender). Alright, this is one of those reviews where I need to kind of dissect everything to figure out the rating. Drinks - stiff cocktails and they're down to make you some sort of weird concoctions with your favorite liquor. Scotty himself made me a super yummy spiked coffee drink once topped with lots of whip. It would be nice to get some beers on tap here, too. Food - Lacking in this department for sure. Everything needs a little more spices and seasoning, the flavors are just pretty bland. The buffalo wings come as deep fried (not stated on the menu) chicken wings with hot sauce on the side and a little speck of blue cheese dressing. I prefer my buffalo wings to arrive drenched in sauce and with a lot of blue cheese dressing. Salads could use some more ingredients. The French onion soup is pretty good, but could use less sugar. Ambience - the atmosphere in here is fun, there are a lot of regulars sitting right at the bar. Tables are available if you're in a bigger group and don't enjoy eating at the bar. A couple of TVs display the most important sports games and at night on the weekends they have a DJ spin some chill tracks for a few hours. Great for a mellow night of drinking with friends. Overall a solid 3.5 stars, but rounding it down instead of up because the food needs some improvements. read more

Nice to not have a total gut buster alongside a nice glass of prosecco, which I also thoroughly enjoyed! This is a review for their happy hour. I went here last night with a couple gfs and had a great time. The place isn't too big, but it does get crowded here and there. Service: I'd give 5 stars for their service because the bartender was so friendly and attentive. Even though we had sat on the table away from the bar, he'd walk over to check on us every now and then to make sure we didn't need any more drinks or food. Food: Appetizers were 50% off during happy hour. I tried the nachos, garlic cheese bread and buffalo chicken wings. I loved the wings. It was well cooked and served with blue cheese and buffalo sauce on the side. Atmosphere: It was not too quiet, but just perfect for us girls to sit around for 4 hours just to catch up and talk. The owner Scotty is a thoughtful person that cares about creating an experience where customers are safe, and are able to enjoy their time. The Bartender staff is also warm and creates a hospitable customer service experience. The real reason I frequent this place is for the wings. Unmatched. This is a great bar in Palo Alto that doesn't require attitude (no wannabees putting on false airs), patience (there is no line to get in) or a lot of cash (no cover!) The owner Scotty, is the bartender, and he goes solo, so the service can be a bit deliberate on a busy night, with also only one waitress. They do play some sounds and Scotty can make up virtually anything you want to down. The decor looks pretty new, so perhaps the bar is too. Simple but elegant. Great alternative to the overblown, over-rated, and over crowded college-aged yahoo's favorites next door or in the vicinity. read more

Awesome neighborhood bar. 1. Bar - bartenders are awesome. Scotty mans the bar most of the time, and he is attentive, friendly, helpful, talkative (if you want to talk). The other bartenders are also great too. Minor caveat is that there's usually only one person at the bar, who is also de facto waiter/waitress and bus person, meaning service can sometimes be slow (but only when the place is packed). Drinks are poured well. Usually mixed drinks are heavier on the alcohol (but not unpleasant). Good selection of beers and wines too. 2. Food - I've had the pizza, bruschetta, and buffalo wings. We have made multiple trips for buffalo wings. Food is muy delicioso. 3. Ambiance - lots of seats at the bar. Multiple large screen tvs to watch the game. Smaller two- and four-tops, as well as tall booth tables. Easy to mix and match larger groups. On weeknights and weekend afternoons, this is a good neighborhood bar with old/new/retired/yuppie regulars. Even on the weekends, when places like Nola's and even Rose and Crown get slammed with douchebags, this place remains an oasis of normalcy and non-douchbaggery. Very laid back atmosphere. There's nothing wrong with this place, but there's nothing great about it either. I came here with my friends after work to watch the Warriors game, since there was a 1.5 hour wait for a table at Dan Gordon's. You order food with the bartender, who is nice. It comes out in a timely fashion. It doesn't have much taste, though- we ordered the french fries (which was a generous serving size), a vegetarian pizza (solid) and a quesadilla (it was a tortilla with cheese melted inside, which is suppose is the minimum requirement for calling something a quesadilla- but there was no other filling, topping, or dipping sauce. Saddilla!) They have a full bar, but no menu for mixed drinks- you just make sh*t up. A smallish place, as far as sports bars go, with TVs on only one side of the restaurant. So if you have a party of 4 and are all seated at a table, 2 of you will be able to see comfortably and 2 of you will need to turn around. I did, however, notice that they do 10% cashback here on your Yelp-connected cards, which is great and can't wait to get that back. :) read more

One of my favorite spots in Palo Alto. It's ideal for a small gathering of friends (or just one other) because it's small enough that you can have a conversation, but there's also plenty going on to keep it from getting boring. There seems to be a resident DJ on weekends who does a pretty good job considering the cramped space (literally at the bar) he's relegated to. This place is fine during the week, also -- just to grab a few drinks and catch up. Bartenders are friendly and pricing is reasonable. The specialty drinks are decent, but I recommend a good ol' fashioned vodka tonic -- they make 'em strong here. read more

Stopped in here for a pre-dinner drink a few weeks ago. Coincidentally, it was listed in the weekly Yelp newsletter a week later. It is NOT near the train station as it said! THEE most legit bar in the downtown. If you want to grab a real drink, Scotty's is the place Food: Delicious. I had one of the pizzas. Very good. They must use some good cheese or something, but what do I know about culinary stuff. Drinks: They defininetly dont water down their mixed drinks like The Patio and Old Pro. Again, this is the most legit bar in the downtown. I dont remember the name of the beer, but they have some great beers on tap. Real beer with real flavor. I went for the first time a couple of weeks ago thanks to the Euro expats meetup group I belong to. This is a way to discover new places (for me) in the area and interact with other people with similar interests and background. I found Scotty's to be the perfect gathering place and I enjoyed my couple of hours there sharing drinks and conversations. My local watering hole. I have been here since the first day they opened. I think the staff is great and the happy hour is very reasonable. $3 for bottled beer or well drinks from 4:30 to 6:30.
