    a beer on the bar

Super laid back dive bar in the middle of downtown Palo Alto. Drinks are cheap and they have basic cocktails but it's a great spot! They also have a food menu or chips! You're greeted upon arrivals and drinks come by quickly. Unlike other dive bars I've been too the floors and seats are clean :) Would visit again!

Very quiet Tuesday happy hour. Nice patio in the back with a TV! It gets cold so bring an extra layer. The bartender is awesome! Friendly and attentive. I wanted more ambience and people but perhaps weekend maybe are better? Bartender said stay next time for dinner since they have great food. Ok will do!!!

There was just a rat by our table!!! Disgusting, and they didn't even do anything about it. I don't know if I have anything else to say really, the bartenders are fast I guess? Didn't try any food. It's also pretty stuffy in here, after a hot day there was like no ventilation needing us to keep taking air breaks to survive hah. Probably wouldn't go here again.

Came here for a Taste of Science event, where scientists talk about their research. 5 stars for supporting science and community events! 3 stars for food. I had the chicken and waffles, which were actually chicken wings. Nice flavorful batter on the chicken but waffles were chewy and not crunchy.

Ribeye cheese streak. Pretty damn good but pricey

Seems like a very nice dive bar. They serve food albeit its a lil pricey but the taste isnt bad. They have some cocktails on the list, but I dont think any were especially great/creative. They have a decent selection of beer but nowhere near as craft as I would like it. Food: Sliders- You get three of em. Mmm theyre decent in size and you get a side of fries. 12 bux is a lil pricey but not over the top. Wasnt particularly tender/juicy but it was definitely adequate. Ribeye Cheesesteak- So not sure what happened here...My vegeterian friend ordered a grilled cheese and i guess they misheard us and we got this. This was actually pretty bomb. I wouldnt say $14 bomb but probably $10 bomb lol. But if you have to eat here...id probably get this again. Overall, i dont think anything really wowed me. Its a decent bar but not a place id come all the way to palo alto for.

as a frequent visitor to downtown PA, i had walked by this bar many a time and seen their happy hour menu adorning the front window. unfortunately, each time i walked by, it was either way before or after happy hour. so when i was asked to select a venue for happy hour with my two girlfriends, i did not hesitate to suggest scotty's. here's the skinny on their HH, which runs daily from 4.30-6.30 pm: **$3 well drinks **$3 bottled beer **$5 wine glasses **half off all appetizers **rotating drink specials we arrived a tad before 4.30 since we were eager, and as expected, it was pretty quiet inside, as we were the first customers. personally, i'm a fan of quietness as it allows for better conversation, without me straining my ears or getting a headache from the excessive noise! we ordered the following appetizers: 1. taco trio: 1 beef + 1 shrimp + 1 chicken with a side of salsa, guacamole and iceberg lettuce. didn't try the beef, but shrimp and chicken were good, fresh. salsa and guacamole were ok. since my husband and i frequent authentic mexican restaurants, we can usually distinguish between salsa and guacamole that is excellent vs those that are just average. 2. shrimp ceviche with side of chips: the shrimp aspect was very good, definitely mixed in well with the remaining ingredients. the tortilla chips were standard. again, i've had crispy with just-the-right-amount-of-oil tortilla chips elsewhere, so these were just ok. 3. chicken quesadilla: generous portion of chicken with ooey gooey cheese, garnished with fresh peppers and onions, sandwiched in a flour tortilla. total food bill? $14.50 to split between the 3 of us. can't complain about the prices! especially in downtown PA! i ordered a glass of white wine to swish down the apps, but for the life of me i can't remember which wine i chose! it was very good though as i still remember the crisp, cool notes of apple in my mouth. my two friends each ordered cocktails, and having taken a sip of each of theirs, i can definitely say that their mixed drinks are STRONG! one sip sent me to the moon! good thing i ordered the wine, else i'd have had trouble driving home after! overall, drinks were good, definitely on the strong side, but the food was very average, nothing special, i'm afraid. it did get really loud around 6pm, and quite full inside, which made for difficult conversation, so that is when my girls and i wrapped it up, asked for the check and headed out. for the happy hour prices alone, i would definitely return. and if i'm not the designated driver, i will definitely order one of the stiff cocktails next time!

But I didnt see any flights. While the service was fine, I did sort catch them lounging around in on the couches on their phones while on shift. I get its slow but its just not a good look. The location is right at the end of a street so there are constantly cars making u turns and coming in and out of parking. So sitting outside isnt terribly ambient. We were seated in the bar area at some tables. The bar is impressive. It's filled to the ceiling with different bottles. We felt like we had to try a cocktail to start. Our bartender was great and even went off menu for some of our drinks. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Once we were seated we got some appetizers to get us started. We ordered chickpea panisse, French onion soup, goat cheese mousse, and the apple salad. Everything was delicious. My favorite was the chickpea panisse. It looked like fried tofu, but it was so delicately soft in the center. The aioli that came with it was great too. My second favorite was the goat cheese mousse. It was beautifully presented and a good balance of flavors. For main dishes, we got a variety of things. We got salmon, hanger steak, flat iron steak, and poulet roti. Everything was delicious. I think the flat iron steak was preferred over the hanger, but both were good. I thought the chicken was delicious. It seemed braised with a lot of flavor. It was a generous portion with a large salad. It was very well done. We also got a couple of sides of macaroni and cheese. Those didn't disappoint. They came in hot iron skillets and were hearty and delicious. For dessert we got the mousse au chocolat. The mousse with ice cream was a great combination. The dessert was well balanced. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening. The staff was great, the food was delicious, and the vibe was fun.

Parker house rolls were fresh and tasty, although not spectacular. The wildflower butter tasted about the same as regular butter. 2. French onion soup was very pleasant, highly recommended. It had a strong taste of (1) something resembling wine must and (2) a meat stock, although I wasn't entirely sure. 3. Roasted chicken was good, maybe not as good as at Sekoya in terms of juiciness, but not dry either, especially with the jug of juice. The chicory salad served alongside it was delightful, however, and one of my favourite parts of the meal. 4. The duck was somewhat small and drier than the usual Chinese style. I did like the demi glace sauce and the rutabaga garnish. 5. The 12oz dry aged rib eye was tasty, with a beautiful crust, but the interior again was a little drier than I would hope for medium rare. Again, the bordelaise sauce was very good. We all loved the aioli that was served alongside the French fries. 6. The side of cooked beans was the main disappointment. The beans themselves didn't taste of much, and the dish as a whole was only rescued by the generous serving of marcona almonds. 7. The grits were decently good. Overall, the meal was an enjoyable dining experience and I would recommend Zola, especially as this style of cooking is becoming less common and squeezed out by restaurants serving more aggressively-flavoured dishes.
