She paid at the front after her service and they harassed her to leave a bigger tip! She gave all the cash she had and tipping is not obligatory! She is also an Black American and noted that her local presenting friends were NOT treated the same way. So sissy and I are into taking our parents for new experiences as their gifts. My mother, being a Korean Drama addict, had mentioned the Korean spas in the shows, and surprisingly, my sister found one right here in Kalihi! Made our reservation for 3 for Mother's Day, and went in! First walking in, they'll give you your locker assignment, rubber slippers, towels, and your wrap thing. I don't know what the purpose of the wrap is since you're naked the whole time in the bath area (where all the services take place). And yes, it is full nudity, but it's women only. I personally don't have a problem with that, but it took my mom some convincing. Being new to this, I didn't know what to expect, but there was a lady in there (customer) who told us what the steps were. First thing, shower. Once you're good and clean, go ahead and enjoy the hot/cold pools, the sauna, and the steam room. I noticed some of the women kept going from the hot to the cold pools. Tried, gave a big nope, and settled for the steam room, which smells nice since they put some type of leaves in there for aromatics. They'll call you for the scrub... which is interesting. I don't know how to explain it, but I can tell you my skin felt so smooth after, so no regrets at all. They go directly into the massage after. It can be a bit sore, and they use this hard plastic tool, which hurt, but afterwards, my body felt so weak and relaxed that it was worth it. All in all, the ladies were very nice. They don't speak a lot of English, so if you're chatty, be prepared to be silent. I would definitely come again to have that baby soft skin. read more

This is my 2nd time doing a body scrub, and I love it! I came to Loess to compare it to Aloha. I had great experiences at both, but I think Loess will be my go to spot from now on. Location: Don't judge a book by it's cover or location. Loess has ample parking and the inside is very clean. It's a lot bigger than Aloha, but the hot tub, sauna and scrub room is about the same size. Customer service:. They are very friendly! I was greeted immediately when I walked in. When I got to the locker room, someone came to show me where was locker was, gave me rubber slip on slippers and instructed me to shower, but no shampoo. Scrub and Aroma oil massage - $120: My scrubber/masseuse was Choi. She is amazing, sweet and friendly! I felt like I got a better scrub here. She scrubbed every inch of me, toes and face! After the scrub, she got on the table, straddled me (did not sit on me) and worked on my back. It was painful, but towards the end, my body felt good. My cucumber facial was similar to Aloha - fresh cucumber mush. My treatment ended with shampoo and warm oil poured over me. She gave a quick rub down, asked me to sit up so she could rinse me off. She guided me to the wet sauna and recommended I lay down in resting room after. I'm very glad I came here, can't wait for my next appointment! read more

I will MOST DEFINITELY be returning and make this my go to spa! I highly recommend this spa. I was Very nervous at first but it didn't take long to get comfortable considering it wasn't very busy when I got there. Chong did an amazing job and made this a wonderful experience for me. I decided to get the $140 scrub, oil massage and herbal package which altogether took about 3 hours. I got there at 10 a.m. and was out of there by 1 p.m. As I checked into my appointment, the lady at the front desk gave me my towel, cloth, a key for my locker and a cover up (like a robe). The lady assumed that I knew what to do because she said go ahead and get started.. so I let her know that it was my first time there. Another lady quickly showed me the way to the locker area where I'd undress from head-to-toe and put away my personal belongings. She then showed me the way to the spa room where there 2 saunas (dry & steam), a hot pool and a cold water pool, along with 4 showers along with the massage tables on one sides of the large room. I began by taking a shower (as told) then I could choose to relax in either the pools or the sauna BUT if I went into the sauna, I HAD TO take a shower prior to entering any of the pools again. **I'd like to mention that this place is VERY VERY clean! the lady's do such an awesome job with the upkeep and sanitation of their spa** I must've taken about 15 showers in the 3 hours I was there :) (Nothing wrong with that) About 30 minutes into my relaxation, Chong came to grab me to begin my scrub, massage, and herbal treatment. BEST THING EVER!!!! I never would've imagined how much dead skin came off of my body during and after that scrub down! My skin was the softest it's ever been. The facial left my skin completely moisturized and shrunk my pores leaving my skin looking better than I've seen it in years! I highly recommend this spa and everything it has to offer. read more

Loess spa saved my birthday!! I went to another Korean spa before this one the same day. They messed up my appointment, but Loess Spa took me in last minute. I was hesitant at first coming here, but I loved it!! It was very clean, have a nice little sitting area outside, and good Korean coffee drinks. The lady at the front was friendly . I got the ultimate package which was a deal. The spa area was very clean. The Korean aunty really scrubbed me and the massage was amazing!! She is one strong Korean aunty. I've been curious about going to a Korean spa so I finally got the courage to go. I called first to see if I needed an appointment but the lady who answered said that they weren't busy so I could just walk in. The parking lot was pretty empty and when I entered I was immediately greeted by the friendly receptionist. I told her it was my first time so she showed me the menu of services and I decided to get the scrub and grape seed oil massage package. She then gave me two towels, one bath and one hand towel. Then she walked me to the locker room, handed me a key on a tie for the locker, and told me to take off my slippers and clothing and put them on the shelves in the locker. After that, she walked me into the spa area where there were two ladies getting massages or scrubs. She then showed me the hot and cold pools and the steam room and dry sauna. She instructed me to shower before using them. I wasn't sure of what order to use them in so I just sat in the hot pool for a bit and then went into the steam room and dry sauna followed by the cold pool. After relaxing for about 20 minutes, the receptionist came back and told me to go into the hot pool to make my skin soft for the scrub. She told me that the scrub lady would call me in a bit. The scrub was very thorough. The scrubber, Lee, was very nice but spoke very little English. That's fine with me. I could understand her turn, over, and side instructions. I'm grossed out to say that there was so much dead skin that came off but after that horror, my skin felt super fresh, clean and felt so smooth. I also enjoyed the eclectic mix of music that played during the entire experience. While I had my services I listened to Like A Virgin, Under the Sea (from Little Mermaid), Let Me Be There (Olivia Newton John), and Circus by Britney Spears, just to name a few songs. It helped take my mind off the fact that I was completely naked and being scrubbed ALL OVER. After it was done, she showed me to the shower and gave me a silicone scrubby thing with cleanser and showed me how to wash my face with it. Then it was time for the massage which was the best I've ever had in my life! I've had Swedish, Lomi Lomi, sports, hot stone, shiatsu, and most recently, Thai deep tissue. Her massage techniques were fabulous and got out the soreness in my shoulder that I had and tried to work out with the Thai deep tissue. Totally worth every penny! She put a cold mask on my face and after that, washed and conditioned my hair. After the massage, Lee told me to shower again but to not take off too much of the oil because she said it's good for the skin. As I hate the slippery feeling, I did shower again when I got home. I walked back to the locker room in a haze of relaxation and got my stuff and went to pay. The receptionist asked if I was relaxed. Was I ever! I say it was the best $120 that I ever spent! Completely worth the money. I enthusiastically recommend friendly Loess Spa and Lee. I felt pretty comfortable with the whole experience and when I walked to my car I realized that I had been there for 2.5 hours! I was so relaxed that I had to really concentrate driving home. You ever need a minute to rest, rejuvenate and come back feeling like a new woman in your new skin and as if everything from the past is securely behind you now? This is it. I was incredibly impressed with the customer service here, the woman at the front desk made a point of remembering my name. She was also culturally aware that I wouldn't be interested in a shampoo (curly girl hair problems). I was spoiling myself for Valentine's Day and bought a spa package. I spent some time in each of the rooms. Also braved the cold bath after the hot tub. The entire place is very sanitary. The woman assigned to scrub me was thorough while also being gentle. She made me feel pampered and like a queen. She was efficient (while making me feel like there was no rush) and laughed along with me anytime I was nervous. I mean, the woman now knows me in ways only my mother has and now I feel bonded. There's something to be said about being scrubbed down, washed and oiled like a big baby. It's healing to say the least. I left feeling properly spoiled and am now trying to reorganize my life to create a whole budget surrounding this. So my experience at a jjimjilbang was actually very liberating granted I saw all shapes and sizes, hair/no hair, and age. It wasn't as bad as I thought! Soaked in a hot pool for 20/30 min then dry sauna for 5 before I got out cuz I felt like dying lol The scrub down and oil massage was the package I got and it came with a facial and fresh cucumber mask...they also washed my hair. Ahjuma was no joke tho! She was blessed with her hands! Down/right side fetal position/left side fetal position/up just remember this positions. I honestly felt like a little girl being scrubbed as a child lol. The scrubbing tho...she got into everything seriously just imagine...if your not comfortable with being scrubbed in all areas....Then I don't recommend it lol! She scrubbed into almost every crack and crease. I for one know I will be coming back! Every month if possible! And price wise it's worth it and some for the price you are paying. And expect to be there for about 2-3 hours. English is very limited but their all so sweet! I highly recommend this place if you want to come out feeling rejuvenated and with the softest skin ever! I recently went to Loess and it was one of the coolest, most unexpected cultural experiences I've had in a LONG time! How did I end up here? I've been hearing rave reviews about Korean bath houses ever since I lived in LA. There, the Korean women who run the bath houses are known for the hardcore scrubbing they give. Who doesn't love extreme exfoliation? Sign me up! I checked out Loess' website and when I saw the photos of how they bend you in to pretzels for the massage, I knew I had to give it a try. I showed up at Loess on Saturday at 8 am and the spa was buzzing with activity. I was, in all honesty, the ONLY non-Korean here. I don't speak a word of Korean, which was lovely because the ladies here didn't really speak much English. ;o) People always find a way to communicate though - I loved it! Upon entering the spa, you select the services you want done (eventually I just said I wanted it all because again, the language barrier...) then you're given a key to a locker and two towels and a little robe to change into. Just before you enter the hub of all the activity, and especially if you're not Korean, be sure to check your modesty at the door. Seriously. For a girl who grew up going to strict Catholic schools, I was at first a bit unsettled by the stark naked women scrubbing and washing every bit of themselves in plain view. Never in my life have I had so many eyes on me as I showered! I had every woman in the place intent on ensuring I was properly clean before I got into the hot or cold water pools. I didn't mind, but it really was just a totally new experience for me. In fact, it was really sweet - the ladies all wanted to weigh in and tell me what they thought was the proper order to enjoy the amenities. I loved the steam room and the sauna - heaven! When it was time for my full body scrub, facial and massage, I was shown to a table (in plain view of all the bathers) where I was lubed up, scrubbed down, massaged, oiled, stretched, and battered for a full hour...or maybe longer. I was pleasantly surprised when a fresh cucumber was grated and slathered all over my face - pretty cool! I've been getting massages for years and the therapists are always so careful to "drape" you properly so that your modesty may be preserved. Consider yourself warned that nothing even close to that happens here. ;o) My experience at Loess was surprising, but so wonderful. I highly recommend it! I felt soooo good afterward, and totally rejuvenated. Everyone was very friendly and kind, plus it's an incredible value - your money really goes a long way here! Amazing. Addicting. I can't wait to go back. I've experienced several different bathhouse/spa day excursions, but the Koreans' twist always jumps ahead of the pack. And this day at Loess was the icing on the cake. I got the whole shebang (scrub, mud wrap aka herbal pack, massage, shampoo) gladly handing over every penny and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. My moms has never been to a Korean spa and I decided to treat her to the experience during my most recent visit. Plus, I wanted to see the Korean-Hawaiians' spin on it. My mom is a massage junkie, so I had no doubt she'd love it, but I was still nervous since I have only had experience with the Korean spas in LA and yelp recommendations were all I had to go on for the Loess decision. Plus, some people are uncomfortable with the "room full of naked ladies thing" and even though I'm cool with it and I was counting on my mom being cool with it, the experience can still vary widely from place to place. I'm happy to report, I couldn't have been more satisfied at Loess. The place isn't too huge, but I found myself short on time during the hours that I was there since I was trying to spend enough time in each of their sauna rooms. They've got a total of four saunas but I couldn't tell you which was which since all the signs were in Korean. My favorite by far was the Yellow Mud sauna (I think that's what it's called and it had the aroma of Mugwort... love it!!!) I could have stayed in there all day. When I made the reservations, we were told to show up 30 min before our appointment time, but do as I say... get there at least 1 hour before. It'd be a shame to not have enough time to explore the spa before a scrub. After showering, hitting all four saunas rooms, and doing a few dips in the cold & hot tubs, we headed over for our scrub down. The full scrub service was won-der-ful. Everything was similar to what I am used to back home, but at Loess after they finish the scrub and before the massage, they put a mud masque all over your body, cover you in plastic, and leave you to lie there for 15 min while it works it's magic. I'm guessing it was the Loess "yellow mud" but I didn't think to ask. I was incredibly relaxed, feeling smooth, and smelling fresh after the spa. I'm worried that I may have given my mom a very expensive addiction since she is only a short drive away from this place, but she deserved it and I'm thankful Loess provided such a great experience for us. Loess spa is much closer to me than Aloha and Herbal so I finally came to give it a try. First off, hours were awesome! Open until 1am with last call for appointments at 10pm. Also they have huge lot to park in! Prices were comparable to Aloha and Herbal. They had their special combo package for also around $100. Space wise they are more like Herbal, on the smaller side. 1 wet sauna, 1 dry sauna, hot tub, cold tub. (Aloha has 3 saunas and much bigger hot/cold tubs). Came because they have 'mud' wrap which came with a facial as well! The $140 package was good since they worked on me for SOO LONG. The ahjuma was also so pleasant and nice. The staff worked to be very accommodating and did their best to communicate to my friend and I. Seems like they might be quieter on the weekends, so drop by if the other two are too busy for your liking. read more

I only go because my therapist ajuma is awesome. She scrubs and rubs me down very well. It's not a relaxing massage. It's like a massage that gets rid offcellulite. She rubs you hard and fast, circulating all the fat on your body. You feel like a tenderized meat after. It's really refreshing. Not for everyone. The cost: $100 if you pay cash. I think if you use a credit card, they add tax. I give the ajuma $20-25 tip. She puts cold cucumber (grinded) on your face. Washes your hair. Rinses your body in yogurt in the end. If you want to be taken back to your childhood bathtime plus a massage, this is your place. The women are friendly but English is limited and most signs are in Korean. I'm sure if I did something wrong someone would have told me. You will be naked, spread eagle, boobs out and hooha out but nobody cares. I explained to the woman at that front desk that I've never done this before so I'm not really sure what the proper etiquette is here and she said go do whatever. Ok. By the time my turn came I was a prune but I did enjoy the spa. I bought the package with the scrub, aromatherapy, facial, massage and added foot reflexology. $160 and gave a $30 tip. The service should have been 2 hrs and 30 mins. It was 1 hr and 45 mins. What I got was great though. The scrub felt awesome and the massage was very relaxing. They don't skimp on the hot oil. I gave 4 stars bc my time was cut short. If I go back, I'll just get the scrub and oil massage for $100. Loved the scrub! There's one thing thats bugging me. The scrub mitts they use...are they new? They sell them at the front desk which I didn't notice until I left. I love this place! If I could, I'd go every week. The women are who work here are lovely and helpful. This is not a luxurious looking place, but it leaves you feeling luxurious for the very affordable prices that are charged. Kong is my favorite, but whoever you get, you won't be disappointed. This review will be long, but if you're a first-timer, it'll be very helpful. :) **If you have sensitive skin or cannot handle a being scrubbed by exfoliating mitt all over your body, then this might not be for you.** Here's what I do: I usually like to call ahead and make an appointment (since I always request for Kong), if not, I know they take walk-ins, however, if you want a particular person, chances are, you'll have to wait awhile, or won't be able to receive services from them. Upon arrival, you are required to pay in order to enter. They'll give you a key to a locker, two towels (hand and body) and a velcro body wrap. I like to bring my own towel for afterwards and you'll know why. After so, you'll walk past the receiving desk and go down the hall passing a common area where you can lay down and rest before or after whatever service you've requested. The lockers are at the end. There, you will undress completely and put your belongings in the locker. Remember this spa is strictly women only. Sometimes there are women already there naked/half-naked. My first time, I was very self-conscious to strip down and that will probably be the hardest part. It gets easier every time you go. After getting undressed, you'll take your towels with you through the white swinging door that leads to the spa area. You'll see that the women working are wearing a bra and underwear as their uniform. Before getting into the pools or saunas, you'll need to shower and scrub down a little. If you do not bring your own bar of soap, they have some their right in the shower area. This is a bathhouse, so other people have used the soap as well. They also provide shampoo and conditioner if you decide that you want to wash you hair as well. I usually don't because the scrub includes a hair wash, which is AMAZEBALLS! Seriously! After showering, you can choose where to start. The hot pool and saunas are great for relaxation and softening of your skin if you are getting a scrub. I usually like to start in the dry sauna and then move to the steam sauna. I'll take either my hand towel or regular towel given at the beginning to sit on in the saunas. You're naked and for me, I would prefer not to sit down bare butt, but you can. If you sit bare butt in the steam sauna, be sure to scoop up some water from the little well looking tub between the saunas with one of those pink buckets and just throw water over the spot you were sitting. Be sure to fully close the doors of the saunas upon entering or exiting, as to not let the heat escape. :) After enjoying the saunas (be sure to drink plenty water before going to the spa and know your limits of how long you can sit in the heat), you need to wash down before entering any of the pools. The easiest is to just take a quick rinse at the showers. If you want to do what those who frequent the place do, you could scoop water from the tub between the saunas (cold water) or the long tub (warm water) with a pink bucket and pour it all over. Be sure to stand clear from the tubs, so that the water coming off your body doesn't contaminate the clean water that everybody uses to wash off. The hot water pool is good for relaxing tense muscles and another way to soften your skin. The longer you can sit in their, the easier it will be to scrub off the dead skin. Some will soak a little in the hot pool and then jump into the cold pool and just alternate until they are called up for their scrub. With all of this, if you set an appointment, it's ideal come 30 minutes before your scrub to check in, sit in the saunas, and soak. The scrub area is separated by 5 foot walls from the soaking area, but it is still visible. When called, they'll have you lie face down on plastic covered tables and will instruct you step by step what to do. English is their second language, but they communicate clear enough for you to understand if they want you to lie on your side, or back. Be warned, you will be scrubbed and they will graze your private area, but they WILL NOT scrub you in an inappropriate way. This is a service that the Korean people do on a daily and is a healthy way to keep the skin clean and smooth. The women will take great care of you. Not only will you feel the dead skin come off your body, the scrub will leave your skin feeling soft and luxurious. If you have some money, I would suggest trying the different massages and other body treatments they offer. After the scrub, you'll go and rinse off once more and then you're done! I have been back to Loess Spa everytime I come to Oahu..its been now 5 times. Chong is my girl and she is amazing. I cannot tell you how amazing this experience is with Korean skin care and massage. Once you come here, you will never go back to the over high priced spa's...this is truely a cleansing of the body and mind. I recommend everyone who enjoys taking care of yourself to come and be part of this asian culture. These women know the body and they work very hard to keep your skin healthy and body relaxed. A true 2 hours of bliss, buy the max package $160.00 plus a nice tip for the girls. Its worth all the money and time you have to treat oneself to this divine experience. read more

This is a review after I did the pre-review from the phone call a couple days ago. I also DM'd the spa about the complaint and they responded very nicely and ensured I would get a good service when I get there. The day came when I went to the spa today and I was greeted in an unfriendly way by (maybe?) the same woman on the phone that was making me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. I wanted to give a benefit of the doubt that it may be a difference in cultures, but she was definitely not nice. (I am Japanese as well so I am not unfamiliar with how eastern asians act). But the saunas and the hot tub/cold pool were pretty nice. I definitely felt relaxed. However the same lady would sometimes come out to check and she would have a very unfriendly look towards me but a nicer one to another customer. Also as I was putting on my underwear the same lady came up behind me to help put on the straps, which I thought was so nice of her, but then she had to say "you need a bigger size" which immediately turned me off (I just got this bra yesterday and got sized by the way!). She was so close to redeeming herself That is why I am giving the review three stars. But I was observing the other workers and most of them were way nicer, so I'm sad that I didn't get that same service. But please take this review based off of one worker. I'm sure with the other workers it's a much more pleasant experience. read more

Amazing!!!! This was my first experience getting a Body Scrub. The owner was extremely kind, she showed me around and explained the treatments. I went with the 2 hr 10 minute package. It was absolutely fantastic!! I can't wait to tell all my friends what a great spa this is!! read more
