I love this place! It's my second visit at Herbal Spa Sauna, and I love that Aeko is the lady who helped me. I got the herbal spa special for $140 before tax. It's a Korean scrub with acupressure massage and facial treatment. It's a lovely combination and truly refreshing! You'll first enter the Himalayan sauna room. Make sure to bring the water the provide you so that you don't get dehydrated. Drink in between until you're ready to come. I know spend a good 15 -25 minutes. You know your body well so stay a long enough but not too long. The next step is for you to enter the steam room. You can probably stay between 5 - 10 minutes. Make sure to drink water before going and keep your eyes close. Once you come out, take the cold bath. It's super cold. It's almost as if you're in an ice bath. I honestly couldn't stay longer than 3 minutes. And, that's ok! Come out and just go back in lol. I love ice bath because it helps with body aches and sore joints. Once you're satisfied then jump in to the hot bath. This is a must before getting the Korean scrub. It helps open pores and releases toxins. The pressure of the scrub is sooooo good but know that Aeko's got a strong hand! It's truly amazing how much pressure she's got on you. I felt like a few knots has been fixed. Once the scrub is completed, you'll be covered in a toasted coconut oil all over you to get the full body massage. Believe me when I say that more knots felt untied or fixed! Then you'll have your fresh, chilled cucumber facial mask. This feels amazingly refreshing! Aeko also washed my hair. The shampoo/conditioner smells nice. You'll be finished with a cup of milk face wash. I feel like some of my stress has been drained. This is definitely something I'd like to do at least once every six months or once a quarter. Called this morning to see if I could make a reservation for 12:30. The owner said yes. I said ok, are you sure you can do 12:30? She vehemently answered yes. My husband and I drive there and when we got to the front desk, she goes "so the situation is you have to come back at 4:00." She just stares at us. We politely turned that down and went home. The nice thing to do would have been to ask us if we were available to come back at 4 instead of commanding us to come back at 4. The nicer thing would have been to thank us for taking time out of our day to drive there to support her business and to apologize for the inconvenience. The nicer thing would have been to let me know that she isn't sure yet if she can accommodate 12:30, to take down my number, and to call me back when she got an answer. The nicer thing would have been to call us to let us know that it didn't work out so we should just stay home or choose a different business... it's one thing to lead on a customer but the way she handled it was poor judgement after poor judgment... if she apologized or was at least friendly toward us I honestly wouldn't have minded. Maybe she was having bad day... Thankfully I only live 15 mins away. I would be weary of driving all the way here if you don't live in town. They speak limited English, but they are happy, delightful and it feels like visiting Aunties. The scrub is followed by a coconut bath and cucumber peel facial. You feel like a million bucks after. My Husband booked us a day at the spa for my birthday. He requested the $140 package originally but when we arrived she tried to put us in the $170/ each package right away (access to all of the spa rooms). I told her over and over I am pregnant and can not use the hot tub, steam room or sauna, I only want the body scrub and massage. She insisted the temperature would be brought down to 100 degrees and It would be fine. After going back and forth we finally said Okay, I assumed it must be necessary to soak before the scrub?. We were taken into the pink salt room that was absolutely too hot. I came out after about 3 minutes and told her that I can not do that, like I had said. She took us over to the co-ed baths where both tubs were cold. One Icey (as it should be) and the hot tub was less than room temperature. It was cold. She ran out of the room before we had figured out the temperature. we were naked and patiently waited for someone to come back and check on us but they didn't come, for over an hour. I was wet and naked and did not want to have to pass the fried chicken stand located in the middle of the spa. (which also smelt like burnt oil) This tub room we were in smelt like cigarettes was cold and dingy and quiet. no music, no aroma, just cold bath water. The staff peaked her head in and quickly warned us some other guests would be joining us. My husband had small shorts on but I was naked. Without knowing if it was two men who would also be clothed, I decided to get out and sit on the side with my robe on until she would come back and then tell her we were done. (I don't mind a nude bath house, but if all of the men are dressed and one Pregnant woman is naked it would be very uncomfortable.) no other guests ever came. She came back about 40 minutes later.. There are no clocks in this room and our phones are in the other building with our clothes so this is my guess considering how many hours we spent at the spa. FINALLY two different ladies came in to start our scrub. the scrubbing was great, massage was even better. I enjoyed that part. The soap and sponges they used smelt like dollar store hand soap and mildew. The woman performing the service smelt like cigarettes. It threw me off and in no way was it relaxing but she definitely scrubbed all f my skin off. At one point I was laying on my back with the face towel on my eyes, shielding my face. She removed the towel so I could shift to my side and she used MY FACE TOWEL to wipe her own sweat off of her forhead than placed it back on my face! I tried not to squeal but what the hell, that is so gross. After it was over I was relieved to leave. I did not feel relaxed at all but definitely soft. On the way out my husband was asked to tip he hesitated because he didn't want to leave on a bad note or start a commotion in front of the food stand. He offered $20 tip and the woman at the desk hackled him for more and raised her voice at him. We spent almost $400 and wasted my entire birthday in a cold stinky bath tub. I rarely right a bad review, but if they want to charge this much they really need to make changes to their atmosphere and be transparent about what can and cannot be done. We should not have been pushed to purchase a package that included all of the hot rooms and tub I could not enjoy and instead was forced to sit in cold waters for hours. read more

The only good thing about our experience was that we learned there is an inexpensive steam room: $30 for 2 hours. Everything else about our experience was, frankly, terrible. The hostesses spoke barely any English which was, I think, the cause of several problems. When we arrived, I stated very clearly, several times: I wanted a massage followed by the steam room, and my wife just wants the steam room. I don't think the hostess understood, because she kept misquoting me. She pointed to the "Herbal Spa Special" and said she would charge me for that and my wife for only the steam room. I said, okay. After changing, she directed us both to a hot rock sauna. When I tried to clarify, she just kept telling us to go in without listening to me. So, I just did. At this point, we thought this was "the steam room"; which, isn't really a steam room. So, my wife decided she would just do the "Herbal Spa Special" with me instead. We went out and asked for the change. We ended up both getting a terrible massage. I was told I could go to the bath room - which didn't have an operable steam room - and then that would be it for me. I said I didn't want the bath room, and then the lady said that was it for me. The massage literally included none of the things listed: no body scrub, no banana milk yogurt, and no cucumber facial or hair wash. My wife ended up going to the bath room and discovered that there was an operable steam room in the female section. So, she ended up using that. Wow! Best experience ever! This was my first time to a bath house and I gotta say this was so impressive. They did the works. First of all, the quality of the water was Hawaiian Sea Salt which was in the steam sauna, the hot tub, the cold plunge, and the showers. Super impressive! I've never seen another spa that does that. It's usually smelling like chlorine or moldy smells. This spa was very clean and they use the best quality of water and ingredients that touch your skin. I think that's why it's call "Herbal Spa" because they actually care about the quality of rejuvenation you are getting. The Salt Room Sauna was absolutely amazing and relaxing, just thinking of it makes me want to go back again. I got the scrub and massage and everything was great. I called at 7:30 and asked if I can come for sauna only so I can take a shower. Our tub at home got reglazed we can't use it for 3 days. She said come in now and I said I'll be there about 10 mins. I got there 11 mins later. The lady sees me park and mad dogs me as I'm walking in. I said I called a little while ago. She asked what services I want I said just shower and hot jacuzzi only. She said she closes at 9:00 so I have to be done by 8:30. She had this look as if she didn't want me there so I asked if I should come back tomorrow or some other time and just back and forth as she repeats herself about closing at 9:00 and I said ok what time do you want me to be finished and she said 8:30. I am now in the changing room taking off my clothes and she comes in and says next time you need to be here by 7:00. I was like but I called you at 7:30 and told me I can come! So I rush through my shower and packing up and putting my clothes on at 8:30 and I said thank you and she just ignores me lol. So childish. If you wanna go home earlier then change your business hours. I will be happy to patronize makaloa spa for my future bath house needs. My husband was in the shower and the woman from the front came in and asked him to leave so they could close early even though he'd only been there for an hour. She stared at him nude inappropriately. The water in the hot tub is very yellow and looks dirty. You can tell the water has not been changed or cleaned. The salt room for the men's side was burned down by an angry customer and I can see how someone could be so upset with them. I don't condone arson however I can relate to the frustration the guy must have felt when he did it. The floors are also extremely dirty and the entire place smells like thick chlorine. Korean spa in a back ally. Female only staff. I went with two male friends and we all did the body scrub and massage. The men's spa area is in a separate building from the business lobby and salt sauna, so you go to the locker room to change, walk outside without a shirt back to the sauna, then walk outside again back to the spa/locker room. The cold pool had things floating in it and looked like it hadn't been drained or treated in a long time. Hot tub could have been warmer as it wasn't hot. And the steam room was nice while the steam stayed on (it's on a timer). The body scrub was good, but if you're a man you keep your shorts on since it's female only staff. Other Korean spas I've been to they have male staff for the men's side of the spa and you're told not to wear any clothes in the gender specific area and for treatment. With the body scrub however they definitely used Irish Spring soap, which was also the only soap available by the shower area (bar soap, not body wash). The body scrub was thorough but they kept going back over areas they already did and I wish they had gone harder as I didn't leave feeling exfoliated. The massage was decent but again, I'm used to this experience being done by someone of the same gender and I found it odd that a woman was doing this. Especially since the body scrub and massage are done in the men's spa area, so female staff are walking in to the men's locker room. For the cost being similar to a larger and more luxurious spa in LA I've been to, I expected more. read more

I do love surprises.. I went in for the dry acupressure massage but was quickly told....Body Scrub and Massage was the only option. After paying...I was handed a pair of "one size humiliates all" shorts to wear and whisked to the men's side of the spa. I was told I had 40 minutes to avail myself of the amenities...which include, Hot Tub, cold soaking tub, showers, dry sauna and steam sauna. I quite literally had the place to myself and enjoyed the quiet relaxation. The spa features are a bit worn but in good working order so don't let that distract you. After my 40 minutes were up..a small angry Korean woman entered the spa and ordered me to the massage area. I knew this was going to great! Using salt and scouring pad (?) the work began. The salt scrub lasted for days! (Ok not really...but it sure seemed like it) She removed dead skin I must have been carrying around since the third grade. After completing the scrub...the massage began. Remember how I said I wanted the dry Acupressure massage? She proceeded to pour enough oil on me to light several Tiki torches in Waikiki. I worried I might actually be combustible lest I stand near an open flame. I loved her lack of concern for the levels of pain she inflicted...digging deep into the recesses of pent up stress and anxiety lodged in my back muscles. That woman has sharp elbows. Ordering me into contorted positions, she found the knots and points I wanted her to and she obliterated them. At this point...I was slipperier than a sow at greased pig contest. So...She lathered me up with soap from head to toe, shampooed my hair and put me all back together again. Ok. In all honesty...I'm still oily in areas...like behind my ears...and my lips...and between my toes. But I'm as relaxed as kitten sleeping in sunlight. I had read a few reviews, but - like anything - each person's experience is different. My opportunity to go arrived when I met a stranger through Facebook. Samantha Cheng is here from Maryland, collecting information from cemeteries on Oahu for her project on the Chinese American WWII Veterans. She's so friendly and invited me to dinner and a Korean Spa session. How could I resist? Samantha found Herbal Spa Sauna and Salon online. She looked at photos, read reviews, and concluded that this was a legit business. I trusted her because she has been to many Korean Spas during all of her travels. I'm glad I tagged along... Our appointment was booked by phone for 7:30pm. They wanted us to come earlier, but she explained that we would be coming after dinner. The ladies were very nice to take us at a late time. There are a few free parking spaces in front of the shop. We paid up front by credit card. I paid the tip after our session with cash. We were each given a basket with face towel, body towel, light cotton robe, and a locker key. We also were given a bottle of cold water! We placed our clothes, purses, and jewelry in the lockers and proceeded to the showers and jacuzzi. My friends soaked in the hot tub first, then plunged into the cold water tub a couple of times. I only could tolerate the temperature change once... Yes, I am a wimp. They offered us the Steam Room, but we decided to skip it, so we could advance to the main event... We walked over to the next room where there were several massage tables covered with clear vinyl. Each table was rinsed off with water before we laid down and got scrubbed. It was a VERY THOROUGH experience. Each area was cleaned several times with sloughing mitts. I thought that I'd see red skin afterwards, but everything was intact. They must have rubbed off several layers of skin - it felt like they used a pumice stone or at least a brillo pad. No joke. It was painful at times and I could see the clumps of dead skin around me. Yikes. I was flipped over a few times and positioned on my sides for complete surface area exfoliation. We were rinsed off with buckets of warm water, then doused with a Banana Milk Yogurt lotion which was massaged over the body and face. The cold freshly grated cucumber mask was applied, then washed off right before our hair was shampooed and our scalps were massaged. The lady in charge noticed that my friend was limping. She called in a male masseuse, had my friend put on some shorts and t-shirt, then led her to a private room for her customized massage session. Wow... Personalized Service! Overall, it was an intense experience... It's not for the weak. I had to get over being in my birthday suit with a bunch of strangers and new friends. However, in the aftermath, I felt very relaxed, clean, and invigorated at the same time. The environment is rather plain, quiet, and simple - not modern nor trendy. The ladies work hard and I appreciate their energy and determination. They stayed open until about 10pm for us! I'm from Hilo and my masseuse recommended Herbal Spa and Sauna. I've been to Seoul, Korea several times and had been to Siloam Spa near Seoul Station twice. Siloam Spa is huge, 4 stories high, with different floors having sauna, salt room, sleeping rooms, massages, lash, nail places and restaurant. Herbal Spa is small. $18 Uber from the airport. I had an 11:30am appt. I was given a plastic bin with towels, locker key and cotton gown and told to shower, then sit in the cold and hot jacuzzi pools, then hot sauna. I did. There were just 2 other women there. Like Korea, you need to be in your birthday suit. If you're modest and can't handle being nude, stay home. lol I paid $146 up front for the bodyscrub, massage, facial and shampoo. I thought it was pretty stiff considering Siloam was $85 about 3 years ago. Let me tell you, my body was scrubbed at least 10 times each area, so thoroughly. I'm amazed the nice lady didn't draw blood! Then she gave me a good massage, with her elbow, total body massage. She slathered me up so much, amazing I didn't roll off the table when she told me to turn over. She put cool cucumber all over my face, then washed my hair. Did I feel pampered? Yes and more like manhandled. But it was all good! I told the lady that she did a better job on me than the ladies at Siloam, Siloam had around 8 ladies getting scrubbed at the same time. Dirty!! When I first started going there years ago it was clean. Now, it is not! Moreover, for my scrub, I was given a someone in training and in the middle of my service I just wanted to get up and leave!! I was not informed she was in training! As I began to sit up, other's scrubbers came to our table to lay me down and insisted my scrubbers was going to do what I wanted. I was so frustrated as I was not trying to make a scene . I just wanted her to stop so I could leave. It's taken me a while to get around to writing this as I don't like to make trouble. Finally found the only Korean spa on the island that offers cold plunge and full spa for men! They also offer full spa, including sauna, steam room, cold plunge, jacuzzi and showers. It is on the ground floor and accessible to the public. I would say it almost as good as the Honolulu club, except the cold plunge is not iced and the jacuzzi is not well-maintained at its optimal temperature. But the Honolulu club is no more and I only came here for a body salt scrub and massage. Aiko has small hands but they are still strong and she a very firm grip for her age. The women have a separate bath house on the other side of the parking lot. I basically had the whole spa to myself and the masseuse was very professional and comfortable with me! I recommend this place if you want to rejuvenate your body and relax your muscles! For a single person, it is good deal at just $125 for a full experience. Because it was so empty, I noticed the cleanliness was not on par (I saw slimy corners, used tissues not placed in wastebaskets, and it's just hard to tell from the brownish tones of the tiling how clean it is) so I decided to grab my flip flops to use for the rest of the time. As I started to relax in the hot tub (naked), about a dozen female buddhist monks started to file into the space, talking loudly to each other. I started to feel uncomfortable due to the fact that they all stayed dressed in robes. Two of the monks -without showering first- got into the tub I was in with their robes on. I assume like me, they got no instructions about anything, like spa etiquette of showering before using shared pools and minimal talking (I only know this from going to other spas). For the next 15 minutes they were all busy talking excessively and going to the salt room, which I didn't know about. When they started to return, I decided to go check out the salt room too (in my robe) and went looking down a hall but was stopped by a stern-looking male monk. Someone who seemed to be a "head monk" for the females was making her way toward the hallway, so I asked where the salt room was. She said all the male monks were in there so I couldn't go in. So I went back into the sauna area, and eventually the hot tub (naked), and the spa employee who checked me in approached me and asked me to cover myself up and follow her to the salt room, and could I please stay there for 20 minutes because the female monks are "shy" and could I just come with her? I hesitated, I felt shamed for what would normally be appropriate behavior to be sitting naked in a spa hot tub, but I said um..ok, then the "head monk" of the females came in and said don't worry, there was some change of plan. So I tried to settle back into the hot tub, when again, the same employee approached me 15 minutes later, explaining that an older male monk was not able to walk well enough to use the men's restroom so needed to use our female restroom. She asked if I could I wait in another room while he used our restroom. Being as I was naked I said, I'll go into the wet sauna room and she hurriedly said I'll go turn on the steam for you. She warned me not to come outside until she said it was clear. So I go in and it's already plenty hot, but she turns on the steam jets full blast and it was getting SO hot. I could hear her talking to someone right outside the door, but it was getting so intense that the steam jets were burning my toes. I had to lift my feet up onto the bench, and it was getting unbearable. I was in there maybe 7-8 minutes total, but it felt like I could pass out and I knocked on the door since I knew she was right outside. And she responded I could not come out yet, I had to wait. And I said, it's really too hot in here I need to get out soon. She said I need to go directly into the dry sauna. She opens the door, and I go into the dry sauna with a female monk waiting in there. It was another long 5 minutes before we were "released" by the employee and I could finally get myself some water. At that point I was done and beyond ready to leave. I showered and the spa employee approached me asking for forgiveness, and started to pat me on my back, which I did not appreciate the touching. As I was in the locker room drying my hair, the employee again approached me asking if I was ok and "felt good," I said no it was not good. And she asked me why, and I explained how I was inconvenienced not only by how she made several requests of me to accommodate other guests, but also by the lack of mindfulness of the monks (no pun intended) in preventing other guests' enjoyment due to their constant conversations. I suggested a large party such as theirs should have been kept private and closed off to the public. Instead of taking accountability, the employee made excuses about staffing and blamed another employee for "breaking rules" and claimed the party showed up same-day. She kept asking if I forgave her, which is skipping the part of actually doing anything to make the situation right. There was no offer of a refund. We did end the conversation by laughing about the awkwardness, which is my coping mechanism when I have to push through a bad situation. But thinking of it a few hours after the fact and experiencing a headache the rest of the day from the stressful events makes me realize how messed up it was.
