I bit in, the breading was warm, but the dish itself was cold. So, I could tell it had been frozen. Our server came over a few minutes later. I let her know that my fish was ice cold. She took it back. 20 minutes later (an hour after I originally ordered), my fish came out again. This time the breading was burned and rock hard. I pulled the fish apart; the inside was burnt too. The haddock was brown. I let my server know. By this point, I now had had ice cold fish and then burned fish. I don't know what they're doing in the kitchen over there, but this is not the place to get haddock. On top of this, we heard good things about this place, drove an hour to get here and it definitely wasn't worth it. Save your money.

There is a heavy hand with salt, and while some may like that, it's not so healthy, and those that want it could easily add at table. To be fair, you put out a lot of food in a short time in what is likely a small kitchen. However, several folks in my regular party, as well as others I know feel similarly--the food quality is uneven. Since January 2025, it feels to me like there's been a noticeable shift in Beak & Skiff's priorities. Pride-related messaging and products that were previously visible around June have disappeared. The Pride flag was temporarily removed during the Warren Zeiders concert last summer, only to be put back up the following day. Is that an insult to Warren Zeiders fans by assuming they're all bigots who would be offended by a rainbow flag? Whatever the reason for taking it down, the inconsistency raises fair questions for me about whether certain expressions of inclusion are actual values of Beak & Skiff's or simply marketing strategies when culturally "cool". It feels to me like recent changes reflect a greater emphasis on their bottom line being the priority now. A local organization rep I know told me that her recent request for a cancer tournie fundraiser basket was declined. And the updated property and programming, to me, seems geared toward ticketed events (nice to see they added women musicians to their live music schedule, though!). It feels like activities that once helped make the orchard accessible to a broad range of families at varying income levels now come at a higher cost. And the "patriotic" NYS fair drink was an interesting choice given the current political climate, in my opinion. From my perspective, Beak & Skiff now seems to be catering to a narrower demographic than it once did. The emphasis on community, accessibility, diversity, and inclusion feels considerably less visible than it used to. For a company that has historically presented itself as family-run and community-minded, that change is unfortunate and worth acknowledging...in my opinion, that is.

Writers! I spent the…read morelast several day at La Tourelle Inn in Ithaca doing a self imposed writers retreat. I've done this before, but THIS place is everything I've never found before. The pic below is just one of at least 12 places where you can sit in total silence and write. There were gazebos, benches, nooks inside, a tent covered breakfast area outside and that's before you get to the fireside camps where other people were "glamping" but hotel people can go sit by one of 12 fire pits! I also went out there during the day and took a nap on a leather couch in an outside tent covered living room in TOTAL SILENCE. Well not total silence. There were birds, frogs, and crickets. There were people if you wanted people (and I met two dogs!) but what struck me was the absolutely silence and solitude I could find. I desperately needed it, and I've NEVER found it like this before. If you go and don't want a balcony, room 104 is the quietest. There's a double door (room and hallway) so any children screaming in delight or adults laughing in the common area is blocked twice. Oh! And there's a trail head to buttermilk falls on property and it's right across from a Buddhist temple which just adds to the ambience. Plus the most delicious food and cider and lake views are found in Ithaca. If you need this, GO.
