I love coming to Lola's when visiting New Ulm. Recently my husband, niece and I had a delicious meal topped off with Schell's 1919 local root beer. I had the chicken torta sandwich which came with a side. I got the tomato basil soup and gave it to my niece. It was one of the best tomato soups we'd all ever tried - yum!! I couldn't resist the nachos since they came with pepperjack cheese. I enjoyed them a lot and it was easy to share. My husband debated between the chicken pot pie and Mac and cheese and ended up with the pasta. We all thought it was delicious but he felt it was a small portion size. The service is always friendly and helpful. We love the charming decor and ample seating. The menu is amazing and there's something for everyone. Long live Lola's! read more

Went to Lola's for lunch with the family. Three people tried the Pot Pie which was delicious one of the three had a lot of carrots in it which made the dish too sweet. My cousin ordered the Pork Bahn Mi with a side of wild rice soup. The soup was really good but the sandwich lacked flavor. My husband and I shared the Four Cheese Steak Grinder with a side of rosemary garlic fries. The sandwich was okay it lacked flavor. My steak was barely lukewarm. However the fries were amazing and very flavorful! Inside the restaurant is super cute and has quite a few seating options. You walk up to the counter order and pay they'll give you a number and deliver your food where you're sitting. read more

Cute little bistro style lunch stop. I ordered the barbacoa sandwich with a side salad; the sandwich was decent but I more enjoyed the salad with a mango pear vinaigrette. Dark and almost chilly inside was the respite of Minnesota humidity and temperature. A moderate crowd especially for a Monday afternoon when most places are closed. They have a large wall menu and all the coffee brews you want. The take out case could have used more ready to go sandwiches. There was one ham sandwich stuffed in a corner that looked like it didn't want to be bothered. The variety of pastries and snacks is splendid including even a rice crispy bar covered in about a quarter inch of milk chocolate. The prices are very not twin cities which will amaze you. read more

No problems, but nothing special. The staff was kind of dry neutral. The inside of Lola is a darker restored old brick building. It was hot and sunny outside so this was nice. I liked it. This is a gem! What a unique space for little New Ulm--I'm so glad we stumbled across this place! We just wanted a place to have a glass of wine before dinner, and initially chose Lola for the patio. It started to rain so we went inside--glad we did! This place is so unique and cute--very trendy and well designed. The front half is dinner seating and a little more formal vibes. In the middle is a piano, couches, a fireplace, and a game hutch. In the back is a cafe setup with a cute counter where you can see cakes and cupcakes on display (one had mini pancakes on top!). So versatile! We sat on the couches in the middle and ordered a bottle of wine for us four. We picked a game from the numerous options (they even had a table of Mr Potato Heads for kids!) and played while we sipped. We ended up ordering two apps: rosemary fries and stuffed mushrooms. The fries were crisp and fresh with a good dipping sauce. The mushrooms weren't amazing--could have been a bit bigger with more flavor than just cheese--but overall, good snackin' with wine. The waiter was fun and helpful, giving us a warm welcome to New Ulm. This place is so cool, great vibes for breakfast, coffee, lunch, cocktails, or dinner! read more

This appeared to be the main coffee shop on the strip in downtown New Ulm so my friend and I bopped in while shopping this morning. I loved the flavor of the latte and the ambience at this place is super cozy! The chairs and fireplace and large space were great for distancing. Nice place, good latte - but..... Waiting 20+ minutes for a breakfast biscuit sandwich? It was ok, but the herbed biscuit had salt in the top, a lot of salt. The ham in scrambled eggs was good and provided plenty of salt without the biscuit having salt too. The pepper jelly and smoked Gouda cheese were tasteless and didn't add anything to the mix. Had to remove the top of the biscuit due to too much salt. It's supposed to come with fresh fruit - 2 small strawberries and a slice of orange.... Lola's a charming bistro with simple and tasty eats. The restaurant is cozy and inviting inside: lots of exposed brick, a warm fireplace, fun artwork, and twilight lighting. The ambiance was lovely for a relaxing and casual dinner out. Lola doesn't have table service. Rather, you order at a counter, then bring a number to your table, and a server will bring you your food. This combo of classy and comfy ambiance + casual ordering made for a chill and enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, our food took a bit longer than it probably should've, and they brought out the appetizer with the main dishes, rather than as a first course. Fortunately, the food was tasty enough for us to forgive. We started with the "Hot Mess": french fries covered with gravy, gouda, and roast beef (aka Minnesotan poutine). It perhaps wasn't a healthy way to kick off the meal, but it sure was a delicious one. Many of their dishes are quite heavy and carb-filled (e.g., pastas and sandwiches). But after that Hot Mess, I knew I'd want a lighter and fresher main course, so I got the salmon salad - and it was wonderful: warm seared salmon + lots of veggies + a tangy vinegarette dressing to top it all off. For desert, we had the caramelita: a brownie with caramel and chocolate chunks. It was heavenly and oh so indulgent. So if you generally like bistros and cafes (think Panera) but want a more fun, upscale experience, check out Lola! I'm sure you'll have a good time. read more

I was extremely impressed to find such a sophisticated restaurant in a small town. (Don't get me wrong--we had good food in other eateries, but Lola was downright urbane.) The menu featured so many tantalizing options that it took me ten minutes to decide. I finally opted for the pork banh mi and really liked it. The flavors were good, but I wish that there were a little more vegetables to balance out the generous portion of meat. I tried my wife's salmon salad and found it as tasty as the banh mi. We also tried the cinnamon pull-aparts and a berry smoothie. The latter was the one down note of our meal: we were hoping for fruit and yogurt, but what we got tasted like ice and syrup. Was in town for the weekend, and my local friend desperately wanted to treat me to Lola's for breakfast. It's a definitely a hot spot in New Ulm! First, the space is gorgeous. It's like you're walking into an enchanted forest because of the mood lighting, twigs, and trees decor, brick walls, and glass painted windows. As you're walking through the forest you reach the counter, and you see a big menu. They serve a lot of coffee drinks that every typical coffee house does, plus they serve breakfast and sandwiches and salads for lunch/dinner. I ordered the Daily Scramble, which they make different every day. I was lucky mine had cheese, sausage, and bacon! It felt like to get our food...there was four of us and an order ahead of us...we weren't in a rush so not a big deal. My scramble was decent, was still hungry after finishing it. Everyone else's meals looked better...wish I would have ordered their french toast. My friend told me about a couple of iconic regulars to Lola and was lucky enough to see both of them! First was the Newspaper lady. She is there every day before they open and gets their newspaper and reads it. When's she's all done she checks the couch cushions for loose change lol. The second regular is the Grumpy Cop. He's a local officer who never looks happy. He's the New Ulm version of Bill Belichick (New England Patriots football coach). Stopped in here yesterday for lunch just before 1p. No line and plenty of places to sit. Cool and clean which is important during the summer! We ordered the roast beef po' boy and the tuna melt, both with the rosemary fries, and an appetizer of fried cheese curds. Everything came out at the same time, but it took forever to get our food, 23 mins to be exact as our receipt had the time we ordered on it. Way too long. Fries are UH-MAZING!!! Definitely recommend them! They aren't over salted and greasy, just PERFECT! My sandwich wasn't anything great, the tuna melt was really good. I'd pass on the fried cheese curds, as they were bland, and for $9.99, a very tiny portion. Friendly staff, and a place I'd go back to just to order the fries! read more

This place is a hidden gem. We were camping at a local state park, ventured into New Ulm looking for lunch and a laundromat, both of which were found blocks from each other. The outside of Lola is cute as a bug and the inside is surprisingly HUGE. We were ravenous, and everything on the menu looked amazing. We decided on the Roast Beef Po' Boy which is described as slow cooked beef with grilled onions, roasted tomato & horseradish cream on baguette and the Chicken Torta which is adobo roast chicken, guacamole, roast tomato, pickled jalapeños, black bean corn salsa & chili-lime crema on ciabatta. The boyfriend got chips with the po' boy and I upgraded to rosemary fries. The roast beef po' boy looked sorta wimpy on delivery, but was pack full of flavor. He shared two or three bites of it with me and I was THISCLOSE to ordering another one after finishing my chicken torta. It was banging. My chicken torta was also amazing and I loved every bite of it. Rosemary fries were crispy and delicious and came with a yummy lemon aioli. It always amazes me that Yelpers will give a glowing review and only 4 stars. What did you knock the star for? That said.....Lola's was a home run for us. The bruschetta was served on homemade toast, which was perfect contrast of crisp and tender. As any bread baker will tell you it can be hard to achieve this feat and Lola has done so. I shared a cup of roasted red pepper soup with hubby...or rather we battled for it. Add lobster and you would have a bisque. Very good! I then waded into the amazing chicken pot pie. Creamy sauce and wonderful chunks of chicken and veggies. Hubby spoke favorably of roast beef melt with provolone cheese. We perused the breakfast menu and would love to have breakfast here someday and try the huevos rancheros and maybe oatmeal brûlé. Lola's is located downtown in really cool old building. A nice little discovery in a nice little town. On the hunt for coffee while traveling through Minneapolis, Yelp reviews brought me here. The route we took, there weren't many choices, so glad that the choice offered was a good one. Great spot, huge footprint for a coffee shop. That said, they are more than that with a tasty looking menu. I only tried the coffee, Americano on day one, drip on day two. Both were very good. Great little lunch menu with sandwiches, salads, pasta and flatbreads. Had I been there for lunch the chicken torta and pork bahn mi both looked like they were worth trying. In the same stroll through downtown mentioned in my other New Ulm review, we stopped at Larkspur. The market had hte highest Yelp review for the type of restaurant we were looking for. The front section is a restaurant. The bare brick walls are exposed, there are nice tables, decorations, and lighting. While I didn't eat in this part I assume it is where you would go for a sit down meal with wait staff. If you continue through Larkspur the middle section is a counter with a large meal selection with pasta, soup, and salads. Also, there are coffee, tea and baked goods available. We ordered lunch, I got the Cuban, and continued on to the back area which is set up like a fancy coffee shop. In the back there are some rough hew tables and chairs. The walls are white and covered with art from floor to ceiling. We were given a number, sat and chatted until the food was delivered in a few minutes. This section of the restaurant has more of a coffee house vibe and you are expected to buss your own dishes. Overall the food was good and the atmosphere pleasant. read more

I would have loved to give this cafe a higher rating just based on its cozy ambience, but my husband and I were very disappointed in the food we were served there. My husband had a special of the day, a type of Philly cheese on flat bread and I ordered the chicken pot pie hoping for comfort food. The flat bread was a very skimpy preparation and the chicken pot pie set in front of me was a plain bowl of a few chunks of chicken and carrots in mostly white sauce. The pie crust was represented by a square of puff pastry. I sent it back. I am enclosing a photo. I don't understand the praise for this 'pot pie'. read more
