On another weekend food fun adventure, Fat Man Reviews found its way to Loma's at the Opera House in Winchester, KY. Loma's serves refined, yet familiar southern comfort food. I tried a Honey Bee cocktail, made with Buffalo Trace Bourbon, fresh lemon juice, honey simple syrup and bitters. The lemon is very forward, but the drink is sweet and finishes with the bourbon. We started with the Loma tots. Made with potato, pork belly, roasted corn, smoked poblano peppers and Gouda cheese and chili lime ranch sauce. The tots were fried golden brown, and they are pretty large. The potato was soft with a bit of a crunch, the corn added some sweetness and the peppers texture. The tots are very dense, they needed some seasoning, needs more cheese and the pork belly did not come through. The chili lime had a good heat to it, but it needed more lime. My fiancé tried the Fish and Chips, this was served with Cole slaw, and she chose Bacon Bourbon Marmalade Brussels Sprouts. The fish was flaky, seasoned and fried well in a light beer batter, but the bottom was slightly soggy when it arrived. The homemade tartar sauce was fantastic. The Cole slaw was very dry and had no flavor. The Brussels were cooked well, but the marmalade was very sweet, and the oranges were overpowering. I ordered the Smoked Gouda Hot Brown, and added the Pork Belly Braised Greens. This is made with oven roasted turkey and ham, Gouda Mornay sauce, candied bacon, sliced tomato, cheddar cheese and scallions served on sourdough bread. The turkey and ham were cooked perfectly, the Gouda sauce was excellent and very creamy. The candied bacon was crispy and delicious. There was plenty of cheddar, the tomatoes were fresh, and the bread was soft. The greens were amazing, soft but a little crunchy with slightly salty taste and a great vinegar kick. Loma's has a good-sized menu offering several appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrées. They have a full bar with handcrafted cocktails. The servers were very nice. The Fat Man says that Loma's at the Opera House is Fat Man Approved with 1 chin. read more

I had the salmon. It was cooked perfectly. However, there wasn't much "flavor" to it, if that makes sense. The mashed potatoes taste like they're out of a box. Nothing against that but need to be "doctored up" for better flavor. The greens were fire. Service was barely meets expectations. Very sweet but not very attentive once I had my food. Atmosphere is exceptional. Food looked amazing. Service was very good and on point with not being over the top interrupting type; allowing you to enjoy company and food. Wife had the stir fry and side of Gouda Mac cheese and said all was great. I had regular burger and Loma tots. I thought the burger was over the top amazing and I am ultra picky on burgers! I did get it prepared medium on the doneness; and it had an amazing toasted bun. I was disappointed in tots. I will agree with another post; they needed something a bit more for seasoning, great texture contrast but missing the flavor contrast that one would expect with the ingredient mix. My family and I just moved to the area so we are trying around to find "our spots". I am so happy to say we found this early on and it's now going to be our date night spot! The entire staff seemed great and ensured the kids were enjoying the visit as well. If you're near by, do yourself a favor and have the Filet - it's fantastic! Charred edges with a perfectly medium-well (as requested) center for my wife and I both! To boast further, the fresh greens in the house salad beforehand made the contrasts bolden the flavor! Been here a couple times and there is only one thing that is a negative and because that is the bathroom (has been dirty both times), Im sticking to the dinner table for the 5 star review. This place is delicious. Review of everything we've had follows: 1. Street tacos: one shrimp and one pork belly with the broccolini side. Shrimp was good but pork belly was phenomenal. Broccolini is roasted, had a good crunch, garlicky flavor...very good as well. 2. Beer cheese burger as a lettuce wrap with side salad and beer cheese vinaigrette dressing. Get this dressing! You have to try. It is very liquidity but great flavor. And the beer cheese burger: yes yes yes. I had 3. Shrimp and grits the last time I visited and they were good but I'll never get anything but the beer cheese burger. However, I will opt for the bread next time. The lettuce did not hold it together and it was very messy. 4. Ribeye with grilled asparagus and pork belly collard greens. It's the go too. Last time, it was cooked to perfection. This time, it was slightly over my requested medium rare but the seasoning was still awesome. Asparagus was crunchy with great flavor and the greens are one of my favorites. We love small up-and-coming local venues, and found Loma's in Winchester to be a pleasant surprise. The building was fantastic--a classic interior brick walled, historic opera house, oozing with ambience. We started with pork rinds and chicken wings, more because of my Keto diet than because of the lack of choices. While the beer cheese vinaigrette was great in concept (especially in the beer cheese Capitol of Winchester), it was a total miss; the consistency of watered down cheese whiz with a glaze of oil on top, had it been emulsified before serving, it would have been much more palatable. My husband ordered shrimp and grits and was complimentary of the use of grilled cherry tomatoes and corn as garnish, but complained that the shrimp was a bit "rubbery." Shrimp is easily over cooked, and adding it atop hot grits likely just put it over the edge of done by the time it made it to the table. I special ordered to stay Keto, combining scallops with a (very) lightly dressed arugula mixed salad and grilled asparagus. The scallops were really well seared, but lacked seasoning. I'll own that since I changed the menu description, but I couldn't bring myself to ruin perfectly good scallops with "pumpkin curry purée." Cinnamon and seafood is a no-go for me. Loma's was a solid 3 stars, but honestly a bit pricey for a hometown dinner spot. The waitress was great, however, and the setting was neat with a cool historical backstory. Lomas is nice dining close to my home. I love the atmosphere, the people you see and talk to and the food never disappoints. However, I thought I would give it a try and support a local business during the Covid Crisis. For tonight Lomas offered a special 3 Tacos with rice. I also got a side dish of macaroni and cheese. The Tacos were good as was the rice and macaroni and cheese. My wife got her standby favorite seared salmon salad (say that 3 times in a row without messing up). The salmon smelled delicious. After eating my dinner in record fashion I tried to look as pitiful as possible and get a taste. Not sure if it worked but luckily my wife is a light eater. The pan seared salmon and salad was delicious. I may have to order that entree for myself some time. Well to make a long story a little shorter during the Covid Crisis stay safe and call in an order to Lomas. I was glad I did and I am sure you will be glad as well. read more

This would have been a 5 star had we not seen the restrooms. There were 3 of us in our party and two of us got the shrimp and grits with a side salad. The side salad was a special on this night, it doesn't usually come with it. When we go back, we will get the exact same thing. The main dish had all kinds of flavor with the beer cheese grits and tomato-corn-scallion-candied bacon medley. The bacon was only crunchy but I'm not sure it had a sweet taste to be classified as candied. Nonetheless, it was delicious. Our salads were a large portion with a beer cheese vinaigrette dressing that I can only hope we figure out how to make at home. The portion size of the grits was just about right: 6 "meaty" shrimp on top of the grits, next to the medley. Our third person had the 12 ounce ribeye with asparagus and pork belly braised greens. It was a large cut of (actual 12 ounce) meat, cooked perfectly to preference. The meat was done with a very flavorful seasoning-and the perfect amount. The steak had a bit of fat on it which in our opinion, adds to the great flavor of the meat. But if you like leaner meat, stay away from the ribeye. Asparagus was seasoned and cooked well but only 6 slivers; could have used more! Greens: 2 thumbs up. They had a bacon flavor and obviously cooked in vinegar as well. Greens were opposite of the asparagus; big portion size for a side. They have a bar and a good cocktail menu. They have desserts but we can't speak to those as we didn't indulge but based on the meal, they are probably something you don't want to pass up. Service was sufficient; our waiter was attending to 6 tables and did a fine job. The atmosphere gives a high class feel but many people were casually dressed so don't shy away because it looks fancy. It's 4 different sections, outdoor brick walls and very modern restaurant. Unfortunately, we needed to go to the bathroom before departing and that was the only bad part of our visit. This restaurant has great potential. I visited there with 2 other colleagues who had eaten there the night before and highly recommended it. It's located in downtown Winchester only 2 miles from our hotel. I didn't see a parking lot, but we were able to park up to 2 hrs on the street. Its situated in a classic old building known as the Opera House. Very brightly lit inside, we were seated immediately. Lindsay was our server and the service was fair at best. We started out by ordering drinks. My colleagues ordered Kentucky Mules at $9.00 ea while I ordered a non alcoholic beer. Unfortunately they didn't have non alcoholic beers so I went with an Ale 8 ginger beer. It seemed to take a while for the drinks to get to us. For dinner, I ordered the scallops on the menu which was supposed to come with a pumpkin spice puree. My colleague ordered the same at $31 ea. My other colleague ordered the shrimp & grits at $16 ea. We all ordered either a side soup or side salad at $3.00 ea. Lindsay came back to inform us that the scallop dinner was changed to blackened scallops instead. My colleague changed to the steak dinner. My scallops were served with a side order of pasta with gouda cheese. They were both excellent. My colleagues also enjoyed their dinners, but were getting anxious when it was taking 15 minutes to get their drinks. For the bill, I was still charge for 2 scallop dinners even though one of them was steak. Not sure if I got the better deal or not. read more

And the beer cheese dressing is unique and delicious. The tomato soup is unlike any tomato soup I've had before! Fish & Chips and the roasted brussel sprouts are my favorite thing so far, but there's lots to love here! I so wanted to like this place. My husband called to see about making a reservation for the two of us for dinner, the person he spoke with said a reservation wouldn't be necessary and we could be easily accommodated seeing as there's only two of us. When we arrived at the restaurant, the host told us it would be about a 15 minute wait. We were seated in 20 minutes, so fairly close to 15 minutes. We should have just made the reservations regardless of the person my husband spoke with on the phone. We were seated at a small table where the light fixture was too close to our heads, and Im a short person of 5'3". I thought I was going to have to put my sunglasses on it was seriously so bright. The drink menus were different. My drink menu had a list of their specialty drinks, but no description? My husband's, however, did show descriptions of the drinks. They do have a nice selection of beer on tap and wines. My husband had a Country Boy Shotgun Wedding and I decided on a glass of Pinot Noir. Both good! We ordered the "tater tots" for a starter. I'm not sure I've ever seen "tater tots" like these. They were good. They were cold, but they were good. They looked more like potato pancakes than tots. We asked our waitress for salt and pepper for our table, as all the others had them and ours did not. She told us that they ran out of them? She finally found some. My husband ordered the IPA Fish and Chips for his entree. Was to come with two pieces of fish, and he received three. Awesome! The fries were delicious. My husband isn't a huge ketchup fan, so he didn't mind that they brought a small dipping ramekin less than 1/4 of the way full. The "citrus slaw" was, however, not so delicious. For my entree, I ordered the Beer Cheese Burger. The burger was cooked fine. According to the menu, was supposed to be topped with candied bacon. The bacon was not candied, as I have had candied bacon and personally made candied bacon before. The homemade pickles on the burger tasted like straight vinegar, which was upsetting because I LOVE pickles. The side of Smoked Gouda Mac & Cheese was delicious! Even though they didn't technically use "macaroni" as the pasta, it appeared to be gigli pasta. Either way, delicious. Maybe it's just a matter of personal preference but, I wish my food had been served on a larger vessel so that I could actually have room to cut my burger in half. I had to remove my ramekin of "mac" and cheese to have room to cut the burger in half. I mean, really? Come one people. It appeared to be clean and the atmosphere was nice as well as modern. This was our first time dinning at Loma's. We were celebrating our 26th anniversary. I was super happy that we were seated right away. Especially since we arrived 30 minutes early. I think on the menu was Salt! We started off with the salted chicken wings, I would call it. I would like to add that my husband and I has never not finish an order of chicken wings. But these wings were too salty. My Blackberry Lemonade cocktail was ok. My husband ordered the steak salty. My salmon was extremely salty and so were my asparagus and broccolini. For dessert we ordered carrot cake, thank goodness it wasn't salty. It was ok. Overall this meal I would give it a 1 star. It was just horrible. My husband and I always go out to eat for our anniversary's and like to try new places. Oh I forgot about our server. He was so busy running around that he couldn't be as tentative. Visited with my parents the other night, since they really like the place. The ambiance Wes nice and it is a neat old building. I ordered fresh pork rinds and the chicken and waffles. I asked if they rinds were freshly made and the waitress said yes, but when they came out they weren't even warm. May have been freshly made today, but they weren't popping and crackling like they just got cooked up. The dipping sauce with them was on the watery side which just made the rind soggy. My chicken and waffles was four chicken tenders on a savory cornbread type waffle. The predominant flavor was maple syrup. The chicken wasn't seasoned super well and was dry. The waffle was very dense and lacked any real flavor. I had expected something a little lighter, and four small chicken tenders for a plate of chicken and waffles is a joke. The fish and chips my mom got looked like twice as much food and I was jealous I hadn't gotten that instead. Cocktails were nice though. read more

If you love eating at small independent non-chain restaurants, you'll definitely want to give Loma's a visit! The staff is friendly and the food is delicious! We visited here with family visiting from Michigan right before Christmas and we were so proud to have such an amazing restaurant like this right here in Winchester! The prices are lower than expected for the atmosphere and type of food, and the service is always warm and welcoming. We've been several times, and I almost always get the black bean burger. I want to order some of the other delicious food, but the black bean burger with the smoked gouda mac and cheese is just too good to pass up. read more
