Lombardi's is an utterly charming, old-fashioned Italian bakery located in downtown Torrington. It's family run, cash-only, and incredibly well priced. The pretty loaves of Italian bread are only $3 -- and they taste exactly like my mother's homemade Italian bread, which I would gobble straight out of the oven as a child. (My siblings and I would fight over the heel, excavate the innards, and fill it with butter!) Also on offer: -- Lattice pies / tarts, half lemon, half apple for.... drumroll........ $14! -- Eclairs -- Italian cream puffs -- Chocolate chip cookies -- 2 for $1! -- Lots and lots of colorful Italian cookies Not all of the baked goods were fresh out of the oven, but that's not surprising given that it was (1) Sunday and (2) there are so many items available that they cannot possibly keep everything in rotation day-of fresh. We have access to world class bakeries and are spoiled rotten. By our hyper-picky standards, the baked goods were just fair. But given the pleasant owners, bargain pricing, and lovely bread, I have no trouble seeing why this place is a local favorite. read more

They've been around for 40 years and I'm pretty sure you will be as charmed as we were when you walk in. Breads, cannolis, biscottis, cookies, pies, pastries of every description await you. If ya wanna eat cake, they have everything from sheet cakes to towering wedding cakes. We ended up with a box of assorted things -two cinnamon twists, two apple turnovers, a bunch of those colorful petit four squares, a few macaroons, and some biscottis. We had the cinnamon twists and apple turnovers yesterday and they were fantastic. As fresh as could be, and very delicious. The turnovers were light as a feather and packed with apple filling. They have a decent size parking lot mostly empty and when I parked there to go next-door for a few minutes to talk to a client they reamed my ass out. I explained myself and owner was just a total b. I am always on the hunt for new bakeries to try. I saw this one was not too far out of my way on my Saturday morning errands run and decided to stop in. It is a little place with, at least on the day I stopped in, a selection of Italian cookies and breads. I got a chocolate chip cookie (definitely of the drier variety - crumbly, not chewy or crispy), a little pizzete (delicious), and a loaf of the fresh Italian bread. The bread was good and exactly what you want out of a bakery fresh loaf: tender white bread with a good crumb and a not too hard crust. However, the real winner was the little pizzete and would definitely be what draws me back if I'm in the area. read more

One thing I miss living on the west coast is that there really aren't any real old school Italian bakeries, the kind that produce piles of buttery pastel green and pInk leaf shaped sandwich cookies. We passed Lombardi's on the way to the KidsPlay museum and by the unupdated 1950's no frills look of the building and sign, I had a hunch it would be good. We stopped by for a snack after and ended up coming out with three loaves of bread and two white boxes. The bread is light and fluffy and moist--my picky four-year old ate three pieces immediately. And they had sfogliatelle, which I have rarely seen outside Italy. The real star, however, is the almond macaroon. It is amazing. It wasn't until I was in the car that I realized that my box of six pastries cost $12, which works out to only $2 per pastry. It would have cost 3-4 times as much in San Francisco. And the bread loaves were only $2.50. I just wish I had bought more! read more

Save your money... went in there the other day and not only was the woman rude as ever! They dont take credit cards only cash. I haven't had a fantastic Italian desert since leaving Niagara Falls, and my boyfriend knows I'm Italian and he said I had to try Lombardi's I was so excited. So he brought me there and I have to say it reminded me a Lil bit of my home town Latinas and Dicamillo's which made me miss home a Lil bit. But he said I have to buy a canolli ( I know spelled wrong) and a Lil coconut cake, so I did and the only sad part is they only accept cash which I rarely keep on me. I understand that they are old school but if they open up to cards they will guarantee a good amount of more business because they really are the best. read more

A good Italian bakery fills a cannoli only after you ask for one. Lombardi's is a good Italian bakery. Thanks to Heather C. for recommending the ricotta puffs or balls or spheres or whatever, because they are indeed so amazing. They have the same lovely filling as the cannoli but are mini and portable, which means you should smuggle half a dozen into the movies instead of Raisinets. Rum balls: fantastic bursts of semi-alcoholic fudginess. Sfogliatelle: crunchy on the outside, creamy on the inside, bonus points for pronouncing instead of just pointing. And, of course, cannoli: the filling is not too sweet but perfectly dense and creamy. I didn't try the spinach bread, which actually looked like a gigantic calzone, or any of the regular bread. There's a case full of those technicolored cookies that always taste like sawdust, but your grandmother will probably enjoy them. The lady behind the counter was reasonably nice, but although there are two small tables, I don't think she really wants you to stay and chat. Prices are ridiculously cheap; for ten bucks you could eat yourself into a coma. read more

Rumor has it from my relatives they offer the best cannoli pastries in Torrington, CT. It had a super smooth texture, was simple rather than complex, not sour tasting, full of vanilla flavor and I suspect it "may" have Sheep's milk ricotta cheese given the texture and taste. It may have been less sophisticated (i.e. no nuts, liqueur, cherries etc.) than some I've had but it sure was tasty. read more

Awesome! Truly a hidden gem, great prices so you can get your fill. Tiramisu so delicate.... I went there the first time and wondered where the heck the cannoli were. First Visit via a recommendation from local restaurant. Old world atmosphere, nice assortment of cakes, cookies, pastries, pies, and breads. There is an appeal to Lombardi's that is supported by the owner who is sweet, caring, and a pure delight. She made the visit an "EXPERIENCE" to remember. Regarding the treats, the rum cake was light and flavorful, the coconut cake was delicious ( could have eaten a whole cake myself ), another delight was a pyramid cake..........fantastic.
