My husband and I were in great need of an exam & glasses. Hadn't been seen by anyone in well over 10 years (I know I know. Big yikes ) Sam was amazing, super friendly & warm. Dr Raley was very informative with an equally warm bedside manner. I am highly incapable of making decisions so the Dr even helped me pick out several frames after asking me questions about my likes & dislikes (I swore before going in I wouldn't get tortoise shells. I don't like them & I'm not into "trends". Guess what ones were my fave? Yup. Tortoise shells) My husband picked out a really nice pair. I liked them. He wasn't sure. Sam went above and beyond- she found another pair online he may like, texted him, ordered them & he'll be going in to confirm which he really prefers. Because, you know, being confident with what's sitting on your face is kind of important. Lastly, they were very patient & accommodating with our two daughters (who were not checked but will be here). Our 6yo was fine but our 3yo was tired, hungry, bored & wanted to touch all the exciting shiny new things, sit in chairs to be examined.... the office was wonderful but I will not be subjecting their staff to the eye-twitch inducing company of my littles again if they aren't being seen. When I saw that this place had over 100 five-star reviews, I cancelled my eye exam with Target Optical and I'm so glad I did! Most thorough exam I've ever had. Dr. Chelsea was super friendly and explained everything she did as she went. She even discussed my eye issues caused by my daily allergies and gave me a few recommendations on how to treat them. After the exam, Cody did an awesome job helping me find a pair of frames. She asked me several questions as I browsed that helped narrow down the perfect pair that looked good with my face shape and were practical for my lifestyle. This place was right next door to work and I've been meaning to check out this place for the longest time and I'm glad I did. I was greeted with super friendly staff and made me feel welcome. I was able to make an appointment the next day. I would have came in that same day but I had to work. When it came to the optometrist, Dr. Packer introduced himself as "Casey," and I like that. He made me feel welcome and it didn't really feel like an appointment, it felt more like hanging out with a buddy. And also, he's a handsome guy and he's a sight for sore eyes! He's super friendly, and did I mention he's cute? As far as products goes, I was glad to see that they carry Tom Ford, Prada, and Ray Bans. I was hoping to get Ray Bans since it was within my budget, but when I was informed that I had excellent vision insurance, I opted for Tom Ford. They also had an extra 20% off which sweetened the deal. The staff was very knowledgeable and was able to answer any questions I had. I also like the fact that should anything happen to my glasses such as scratching the lenses or the frames shattering to a million pieces, that they would replace them as long as I bring it in. I would recommend this place to anyone! Also they got back to me in a very timely manner (sometimes within minutes after I had just called.) Love it! Decided to get my first ever eye exam to celebrate some newly discovered adulthood, and I could not have been more pleased with my experience at Lone Star Eye (and no, it wasn't just because I still don't need glasses). The entire staff and Dr. Packer were extermely helpful and informative. They always made sure I knew exactly what they were doing and why.( I will have to apologize to my anatomy professor sometime, because I knew a whole lot less about my eyes than I thought I did). It really was an enjoyable and a bit of an exciting experience. It's not every day I get to look at some really neat pictures of what is going on inside my eyes. The only sad part of the experience was that I don't need to come back for another two years, but at the same time it was good to hear that they did not want me to come back when it wasn't necessary. I was referred here by a friend (who gets some special credit on his account because I mentioned him), and his reccomendation definitely held up. Oh, and last thing. I cannot describe how thrilled I was that their online appointment system was actually all online. I began my search for a new eye doctor by checking my vision plan's providers and then working backwards to look at websites and determine who had the most up to date technology. It was important that I try to find an office that didn't need to resort to dilating my son's eyes. (Let's just say he's not a fan.) I quickly decided on Lone Star Eye and let me just say, I wish all of my blind (sorry for the pun) medical related choices worked out this well. What a great office, staff and Dr. Packer is about as nice a guy as you could hope to have serving you and your family's needs. Three out of four of us have already seen him with the 4th headed in this week. Frame selection has been good and I was able to make use of both my insurance discount AND the Yelp coupon. I can't believe I haven't left a review for here yet! I've been going to see Dr. Packer for nearly 7 years. I've had vision issues and glasses since the 3rd grade and have been religious about my annual exams since I'm a healthcare practitioner and understand how important regular check-ups are. Despite going to eye doctors for almost my entire life, I learned so much about my eyes from Dr. Packer, including lots of helpful information about having light blue eyes! He is very thorough, knowledgeable, and a really awesome guy. His staff is always super sweet and very helpful. I'm able to adjust appointments by text, which is fantastic since I cannot make personal calls at work. Their office has the OptiMap machine for an extra $39 fee, which is worth not having your eyes dilated (especially for my poor blue eyes that take longer than usual to recover). The entire exam is more expensive than other places, because of the added Contact Lens Evaluation, but if you are not going in for contacts, then let them know ahead of time. I realized that I had been charged for this after the fact even though my appointment was only for glasses and they refunded it back to me. The office is really lovely with a Keurig machine and what I assume are photos that Dr. Packer took himself on the walls. There's even an N64 machine with bean bags for kiddos. Even though I moved literally to the other side of Austin in 2012, I continue to make the trek down here every year because I think Dr. Packer and his office are worth the drive and cost. read more

Dr. Packer is very knowledgeable and passionate about providing his patients with the best level of care possible. A little about me and my experience with Lone Star Eye: I was diagnosed with keratoconus in 2011 and fitted with rigid gas permeable contacts that made my life miserable. My eyes were irritated and inflamed most of the time and I could only stand to wear the contacts for about eight hours maximum. Any debris or dust that entered my eye was extremely painful so it made doing things outdoors difficult, huge bummer. In 2013 I started researching other lens technology and decided to try Kerasoft. At the time, Dr Packer was one of the few doctors (possibly the only doctor) in Austin who fit these lenses and he specialized in the treatment of keratoconus so it seemed like a natural fit. Kerasoft are somewhat difficult to fit (especially with moderate to severe keratoconus like mine), but Dr Packer got it right! Under his care and guidance, my eye health and general quality of life have improved greatly. read more

Lone Star Eye is outstanding in every category. First off...they are on time and run the shop like a Singer sewing machine. You show up for your appointment and the courteous and friendly staff at the front is on their game. If you have to wait (2-3 minutes), the lobby is really well appointed with comfy couches, video games for the little ones (okay so I might have played a little Mario golf while waiting for my wife to finish up), cold bottles of water...you get the idea. The equipment and technology is state of the art....the newest and greatest stuff in the world of eye doctor equipment I am guessing. The staff is knowledgeable and super friendly and makes you feel very comfortable. Dr. Casey Packer is awesome. He knows what he's doing, he is friendly and conversational and you never feel hurried or like he's pacing to get to the next patient. He takes his time and really explains what you are looking at on your X-rays (He has this big awesome piece of equipment...Optimatron or some damn thing that is $38 and takes a picture/map of your eyes.) if you choose to get them. Then he explains your particular issue (assuming you have one) in context and what to expect going forward, etc..In other words, you feel like you know what in the sam hill is happening with your eyes. Call me crazy...I like to be informed about matters of SIGHT! We recently took our three boys (ages 9, 10, 14) to see Dr. Casey and the experience was just as awesome for them as for my wife and I. The staff is great with kids and really puts them at ease during the exams, etc...I cannot overstate how important this was for us since kids venturing into the unknown (especially in Dr's offices) can be a bit scary. Finally, Justin in the glasses department is knowledgeable, helpful and efficient. I recently wanted tighten my glasses up a bit (seemed loose on my face) and stopped in and he handled it no problem. Oh yeah, and if you dont happen to have your wife with you and therefore are unable to make executive decisions about which glasses look best on you., etc....the girls up front are more than happy to give you an honest answer. Yes I actually went up front a few times and asked which ones looked better. What can I say....I gave my brain and my opinion to my wife a long time ago and she wasnt around that day. I had a great experience at Lone Star Eye. Just the drive there was pretty enough to make my day. The check-in was simple. I love that I didn't have to fill out a 5 page patient history questionnaire. The wait was no more than 5 minutes which was ok but I was kinda bummed out because I had my eye on the video games in the reception area. His staff is great and made me feel very comfortable. Explained each step and the reason behind it. Dr. Packer was nice and went through the exam results with me. I went in for contacts and I was ready to defend my choice and stand my ground on no glasses, but it wasn't necessary. He understood my logic and didn't push any other products or exams. Who knew that a visit to the eye doctor could be ENJOYABLE? Well, I certainly wasn't expecting it, but I had a fantastic experience. First of all, I was 30 minutes early to my 5pm appointment. I was shocked and very pleased that they took me back to begin within 2-3 minutes of arriving. How refreshing not to sit and wait!! If you're like 98.9% of the human race and HATE getting dilated, this is the place to go - they use new technology that can take a scan of your eye without any dilation. It was ACTUALLY painless! No puff of air, no horrible drops. You just look into a little light and it takes a scan in .5 seconds. The entire office is up to date with modern technology - even the color test was on an iPad. Marissa, who did all my initial tests before Dr. Packer came in, was extremely nice, patient, efficient, and very personable. She didn't leave me to sit in the room for 15 minutes alone, either. When she said "I'll be right back!" she ACTUALLY was right back - I never waited longer than about a minute and a half. After the initial tests, Dr. Packer came in. I knew from reviews that he was young and, well, let's face it - attractive. But, what a fantastic personality too! We joked around a bit, and he made me feel at ease. What he did that I was very impressed and pleased by was EDUCATE me. He showed me the photos and scans they took of my eyes, pointed out what they were looking for in each, and explained what he saw in my photos specifically. He even showed me examples of other "example" scans so I could see a comparison of my eye to someone with a more severe issue. After discussing my eye health, we did the prescription and he explained to me that if two of the options in the whole "which looks better? one... or two..." game look very similar, that he actually wants to know that, rather than me choosing one or the other. I never knew! I always thought it was a test. Finally, we discussed my contacts. He suggested changing up the specific "model" of contact I used (but sticking with the same brand). He got me samples and I put them in, and happened to mention that I often experience some irritation when I first put the contacts in (thinking this was normal and unavoidable). He asked how long it lasts, and I told him 10-20 minutes. He suggested that I try a different brand of contact altogether, since the material of my original brand may be irritating. We tried a new brand and voila! It was like water on my eye. I had been using my previous brand for EIGHT YEARS. What a huge relief to find something that actually works for me! All in all, this was the best experience at an eye doctor that I've ever had. Absolutely can't say enough good things about the customer service and quality of service this office provides. My expectations were not the highest as I found Dr Packer thru Groupon, however I have been really impressed. The examination was complete and utilized the latest equipment. Seeing a 3D image of my eyeball helped me understand what the Dr. was looking for and gave me real insight ( no pun intended). The script I got really helped me see better. I purchased a deal on Groupon and I was a little nervous that they would try to get me to add on tests or other extras, but that was not the case at all. I got exactly what I needed. I was a first time patient today and I had the best eye exam experience ever! I've had glasses since I was 7 years old and contacts since I was 12, I am now 25 and I have always gone to a big box store to get an eye exam. This experience was so much better and much more personal. They are thorough and take the time needed to understand any issues you may be having with your eyes. I've always dreaded the 'puff of air' but with the new technology and amazing staff that Dr. Packer has, there was no puff of air for me today! As soon as I walked through the door, I was greeted with a smile and a cold bottle of water. The environment was very welcoming and super modern. And there's even a Nintendo 64 for the kiddos!! I have astigmatism in both of my eyes and it's difficult to find a contact that can settle quickly without giving me blurred vision for the first 5 minutes of putting them in. I explained this to Dr. Packer and without hesitation he knew exactly what type of contact I needed and gave me a trial pair. I am currently wearing them and I have to say that everything is so much better. I can truly feel a difference. After my exam, I tried on almost every pair of glasses in the building. I am 68 years old and have visited many optometrists over the years. This was the best office, technology and professional exam by far. Dr. Packer is a young, well-trained professional. He takes the time to talk with you and show the scan results of your exams. It does take awhile, about 75 minutes to complete the exam, but you will be very pleased knowing you had a COMPLETE eye exam. It was a true 5 star experience. read more

Had to go eye doctor shopping because mine moved out of Austin. Great! First I gotta see who takes my insurance, then start checking reviews for anyone decent that I can go to. The first few places were either bad, semi-bad, or wildly differing reviews. Started thinking I'll be settling for the lesser of evils...then I came upon Lone Star Eye with Excellent 5 star reviews. Sounded great and it's close. I called and got an appointment the next day. I coincidentally had to schedule a 5:30pm appointment (the last of the day?) so I wasn't sure what kind of reception and service I would be getting. I know I'm tired at the end of my work day... Everyone I talked to and came in contact with was extremally professional, helpful, and courteous. To throw in a little more of a test I brought my restless 8 year old without anything to entertain her and she was restricted from using the office video games or iPad they have for kids (she got in trouble at school). Everyone, including Dr Packer was awesome and friendly, and answered all of our questions The Dr was very professional, knowledgeable, and still had a great sense of humor at the end of his long day. Looking for a great optometrist experience? This is it! My son and I found Lone Star Eye through yelp and after looking at the website and reviews decided to give them a try. We are sure glad we did! We were warmly greeted at the front counter, no extensive forms, just a few simple questions and we were seen right away! Marissa and Faryn (sp?) began our visit with the testing using state of the art equipment, OPTOMAP DAYTONA -RETINAL IMAGING SYSTEM and CORNEAL TOPOGRAPHY-MAPS THE SURFACE OF THE CORNEA. From there, we were brought in to the patient room where they proceeded with some standard vision, depth, color tests plus the I care tonometry which eliminates the need for the puff test. Marissa was very thorough in explaining the different computer images, various test and preparing our meeting with the doctor. Dr. Packer entered and introduced himself as Casey, he is very friendly and upbeat. He has a very precise level of detail and care which is evident in not only the staff, the technology that he chooses to work for him, but his level of personal skill in relaying the necessary information so the patient has everything they need to make an informed decision for their vision needs. He made us feel very comfortable, trusting in his recommendations completely. Justin is the frames specialist over at Lone Star Eye. He was super helpful in helping us try different frames, even going above and beyond the call of duty to order additional pairs for me to try. I took advantage of a Living Social deal since my company did not offer Vision at the time. I saw the great reviews and that sold me. I will admit... it is quite a drive out there, but it is located in a beautiful area of West Austin. After the trek out there, I was greeted right away and felt comfortable as soon as I stepped through the door. I quickly saw Dr. Packer and he was great, probably the nicest Dr. that I've worked with. He was helpful in explaining what and why he was doing things. He gave me all options and his recommendations. It was quick and painless. After the exam I started to shop for some of the glasses there. I will admit, the prices are up there and of course the glasses that fit perfectly were some of the most expensive ones on the floor. I know it is a commitment to quality for something I will use everyday though. I'm still on the fence about getting the glasses but I really enjoyed the experience I had there. Justin, the person helping me with the glasses was also very friendly and we chatted up about a mutual love for comic books. I definitely would recommend this team and I plan to be a return customer.
