First time visiting any KOA campground. Typically we do Lake Livingston State park, but this was a…read morenice switch up. This review is mostly about the KOA, but I will use the state park as a comparison. First I should say, the staff at the KOA are very pleasant, not that the State Park isn't, but everyone at the KOA was helpful, waving, driving around checking on you. They take very good care of the campground as well. The bathrooms and showers were the cleanest of any campground I have ever been too, especially compared to the state park. I also would see the maintenance team cleaning up sites and shoveling out fire pits. We stayed in a tent site, and one of my gripes would be, that the sites are pretty small. It would be difficult to get two decent size tents on once site, without being right next to the fire pit at least. Compared to a state park site where you have a ton of space, this was kind of a bummer. The way it sits now, there is a large open green space across from the campsites, which did allow for more room to run around and explore, but this area is marked as future development. Once this place builds the remaining sites, I think the loss of the bonus space will likely turn us away. The only other issue I had with the place was the locations of the bathrooms. Staying in the tent site, it is quite the walk to either of the bathrooms, especially with kids at night and such. The exercise is great and all, but when you have to walk a kid that far to the bathroom at 2 AM, it gets kind of old. The pool was very nice, clean, albeit cold due to the time of year, but I am sure it would be very nice in the summer. Its mostly shallow, 3 feet on both ends, 4 in the middle, and a large shallow area for little kids. The hot tub is also a nice addition. The beach area is about what I would expect from a lakeside beach, but don't expect is to be like an ocean beach. The water off the beach was nice and clean, sandy, few rocks, and no sea weed. Overall, we really enjoyed ourselves, and met some very nice people, and that really made the trip worth it for us. Like I said, if the green space wasn't there, it would have been a bit of a bummer, but it was a very nice as it is right now.

Burroughs Park is one of those places that makes you appreciate having great local parks nearby…read more It's huge and has a little bit of everything -- fishing ponds, multiple playgrounds for kids of different ages, long walking trails, and plenty of open space to just enjoy being outside. The playground areas are especially great for families because there are several scattered throughout the park, so it never feels overly crowded. The fishing ponds are also a nice touch if you want to slow things down and relax for a bit. It's a great spot for a weekend walk, letting the kids burn off some energy, or just getting some fresh air. The park is generally well maintained and there's plenty of room to spread out. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that it can get pretty busy on nice days and parking near the playgrounds fills up fast. But overall, it's definitely one of the better parks in the area and worth the visit.

Dog park win! This park is nestled away in the forest…read moretowards the back of the park. Love that it's a huge open fenced in park for the fur babies to roam. Lots of giant trees where squirrels like to play hide and seek with the dogs. Only down side is there's just one water fountain towards the front and then a couple faucets where folks bring dog bowls to put out for the dogs. The walking paths have recently been upgraded to asphalt rather than packed clay, and there are a couple of hiking trails through the forested areas to enjoy as well. Closes around dusk and the constables do pass through and nudge folks out before closing. Locking gates were also recently added. My dog enjoys our walks here especially when she sniffs out the occasional deer or rabbit that live along Cypress Creek. If you do the whole loops the walking path is about 2.5 miles.

They have a sand volleyball court. Lots of walking trails. Even behind the trees where a retention pond is. They have covered pavilions with picnic tables and bbq pits. Also love that the playground is covered and kids can play in the shade. That's a MUST for Texas parks!

The star of the show here is the cabins, although if we lived within an hour driving distance we…read moremight also periodically visit for the day to swim in the lake. The cabins are one large room with a queen bed and a bunk bed. Apparently there used to be a trundle under the bunk bed but they were removed at some point. The cabins have great working AC - much better than the cabins we have previously stayed in at Inks Lake State Park. There was a record breaking heat wave the weekend we stayed there and the cabin stayed cool. The cabins have a mini fridge (with a tiny freezer section in it), a microwave, and a coffee pot. You will need to supply your own coffee filters and all the bedding, including pillows. The cabins do have a broom and dustpan, as well as a door mat to keep some of the dirt out. There is a table with 4 chairs. The best part of the cabins are the two porches: one screened in and one open. They are LARGE porches, fully covered, and each one has 2 wooden chairs and a small table. Each porch has a ceiling fan, although neither fan spun fast enough to create much airflow. We tried pulling the chain to see if we could get the blades spinning faster without luck. If we were to return in the summer again, I would bring along our own fan. Even in the heat of an August heat wave, it was absolutely glorious to sit out on the porch in the morning with a cup of coffee. The cabins do not have their own bathrooms, but the bathroom nearby is exclusively for the 5 cabins and is cleaned every day. Between the limited use and the frequent cleaning, these were the nicest state park bathrooms we have ever used. Plenty of hot water, and a cold drinking fountain and water bottle filling station outside. The only complaint was that the toilets were INCREDIBLY difficult to flush, to the point where 4 of my 6 kids were physically unable to do it. I walked into the bathroom to find a poop sitting in the toilet multiple times and I have to assume it's because the guest before me was unable to push the button hard enough to get the toilet to flush. The park itself is tiny. There are two main trails; the one around the lake is roughly a mile and the one that leads to the primitive campsites is around 1.5 miles. The trails are pretty rough, with lots of holes, branches, and sandy areas, offering many opportunities for runners to sprain their ankle (which sadly, happened). I would plan on walking (not running) the trails, and even then only if you have strong ankles. The trails are shaded and pretty. I almost ran into a wild hog one morning on the trail out to the primitive campsites. The main attraction of the park is the lake, which is small, but fun for swimmers. There is a swim beach and a floating dock. The sand is soft and you do not need water shoes. The lake is apparently spring fed, but it's been hot enough for long enough with no rain here in Texas that the water was warmer than any spring I've ever felt. Still, on a 110 degree day it sure felt nice to float out there. The water is relatively clear, for a lake. You can fish on the lake and there are kayaks to rent, although they are ridiculously expensive (in my opinion) and have a complicated rental process. Forget the Kayaks... just bring your own inner tubes and float around. If you're looking to camp in the summer without sweating at night and you like to swim, Fort Boggy is a great spot. The cabins are $85 a night plus hotel tax. Calling this a hotel when you have to bring your own linens and there's no bathroom is kind of a stretch, but taxes are taxes I guess. Overall it's a fun weekend in a beautiful cabin by a nice lake. Great family time. I wish all the state parks had cabins this nice!

It's also where the workout machines are which is so cool! It's also covered. There are two rentable covered pavilions with a smoker/ grill and sink with water access. There are also smaller covered areas with picnic tables which are first come first served. It has a bathroom which was actually clean and nice inside. This is just one area of the park but there is a huge pond to fish, a large walking trail around the pond on the other side and I've only explored a portion of this park. My kids loved it. We will be back!

The pavilions are covered with ample seating, there's a nice playground nearby for the kids, and lots of open grass for games. The bathrooms are pretty clean and close by. There is also ample parking. We visited in mid October and while it was still pretty hot, the shade of the pavilion makes for a nice day out. We were able to play several games in the nearby grassy area - making sure to drink plenty of water! There are a few trees so it isn't totally open but large enough for group games. There's a ditch area further out that's pretty easy to retrieve balls and frisbees from if they go too far. All in all a solid picnic option!
