Our last visit before today was 20 yrs ago and arriving in Kingston and realizing the Lone Star was still in business was one of my highlight today! Our server (Daisy I think?) gave us a warm welcoming. Food was excellent exactly how I remembered it waz. We got the Chicken sizzling fajitas for two and we had more than enough!! For drinks we had a Coronas bucket. The usual complimentary tortillas chips and salsa is always a nice to have while waiting for the main course. I recommend going at night and sitting on the nice cozy patio. For first timer, know that you can't come to Kingston without trying the Lonestar! read more

unfortunately, the food and service during our visit last night--Dec 29 receipt number 1462933 order 938321-- was far from good. The server seemed like she was a pleasant person, however, I am certain that she noted the problems with both meals and ignored them. When one of the problems was mentioned to her she again ignored it. She did not, at any point, ask how our meals were even while asking everyone else around us. 1. one meal was steak and the request was for med well, the steak was burned, very tough and extremely well done. 2. one meal had jalepenos on it when the waitress had been told that I was allergic....the server also said that she would advise the cooks to not put the spicy sauce inside the wrap and it still there. I had made it clear that this was not a preference, it was an allergy. This was by far the worst meal that either of us have had in a long time. ALSO--can someone please explain why staff tell guests that there is a ten to fifteen minute wait because they are busy when there are less than 25 people in the entire restaurant--most of the tables were empty! When we chuckled and said quietly to her that they didn't seem too busy she replied 'well, we have reservations to deal with...' So, we waited the 10 minutes and were seated. We had a view of the front door and no large parities arrived while we were there. Is it a lack of staffing? If so, you'd be better off to change your policy from telling obvious untruths to being up front, and assume that people will understand why there is a wait. I've been here a few times. I used to get take out burgers since I lived down the street. Seems like they give you more fries if you eat in though. The interior decor and atmosphere is good. It's funny how the staff dress up in a western cowboy theme also. Guess it's appropriate considering the name of the place. Service was good and prompt. I got the BBQ Bacon Burger. It came with big slabs of bacon and tons of BBQ sauce, which made for a messy meal. No worries though, the waitress gave us plenty of napkins. The patty was big and thick, which was filling. I ordered the salad because you're left with a greasy feeling in the pit of your stomach as you get older if you eat too much greasy and deep fried food... The salad serving portion was good. My fiancée got the wrap with fries and I took a bite of the wrap (and stole her fries). The wrap was good too. Fries were the usual. There's a certain consistency and expectation you have when you enter a chain establishment. Considering the name of the restaurant, it certainly meets the expectation that you'd get a meaty meal. I would rate it a 3.5, but I've rounded it up to a 4. Would go again if I'm craving a meaty meal. read more

Patio on Wednesday evening was great. Band was fantastic and great at engaging the crowd. Food is always good. Same as other Lone Star locations. Consistent would be the appropriate word. Not the greatest dinner. The service was pretty good . 4 of us for dinner we got service quickly and the food arrived at the same time. We had two issues we ordered fish tacos and received chicken. It was pretty good but not what we ordered. Bringing the issue to our waitress got mixed review.she stated it's easy to make that mistake. That's it . Shoulder shrug and walked away. Driving through town and we stopped for a quick early lunch. The food was surprisingly good for a chain restaurant. The salas are home made daily and we watched the tortillas being made after we placed our order. We eat Mexican food at home several times a week and this grill was just fine. I would have never predicted giving fast casual chain like the Lone Star Grill a four-star rating but they deserved it. Those were some tasty fajitas, served flaming hot with home-made tortillas and in large portions by accomodating and patient staff on a top-class patio. There is a reason a restaurant like this survives in downtown Kingston when there is so much competition from classier places - because it is reliable, relatable, and surprisingly good. read more

Tried to take my wife there for her birthday, told the server Peaches, it was her birthday, and she not only ignored this and did NOTHING for us but also had to be asked 2-3 times for everything from the takeout boxes to water to napkins. I don't know if this attitude was because we're an interracial couple, and not common in this town/city, but then my wife was told by Hombre she'd get some token of apology in the mail the next day. It's been a week. Not only have we gotten squat, but when I called the restaurant to follow up, the other male manager, Dawn, had no clue of any incident as Hombre (surprise!) had documented, and obviously done nothing to atone for this unacceptable service. The Lone Star used to be a really great restaurant many years ago. I can still remember eating Fajitas there as a kid and lovin it. More recently things have changed. The food is expensive, and the service is awful. Although I may have a somewhat jaded opinion as I worked there a few years back...and by worked there I mean I was employed for roughly a month before quitting (for an abundance of reasons). Personal issues aside, everytime Ive gone in there since has been negative. Whether I'm waiting 20 minutes for a drink upon arrival, or not receiving the utensils I need to eat my food, something seems to inevitably go wrong. This would be forgiveable except that the food sucks...worst Tex-Mex ever. The only real reason to go here is in the summer to sit on their patio. No doubt about it, one of the better patios in Kingston. Unfortunately the sluggish service manages to put a damper on your night no matter how many "Texas Size" Margaritas are consumed. The free chips are a definite plus, and the salsa is delicious. Vegetarians and meat eaters alike, watch out for the beans they serve. Upon asking you will be informed there are pork products in their beans...what do they mean by "pork products"? BACON FAT! I was told not to tell customers this qualifying piece of information during my training there. DISGUSTING. Bad management, Slow Service, Bad Food. The only thing they have going for them in my opinion are the Free Tortilla Chips/Salsa out on the patio(if you can get a server to bring them to you. Best place for fajitas and margaritas! The fajitas are made fresh daily, and chips are served warm with fresh salsa. Chips and salsa used to be complimentary, but they changed it (I think it's $1 a basket now). We usually do half chicken half steak fajitas, and they come out quickly and sizzling! Unlimited fixings (cheese, sour cream, lettuce, etc). Fajitas used to come with rice and beans, but now I think you have to choose only one. You can tell corporate did a few things to change this place to make more money, but I don't care too much as the food is still amazing. The margaritas here are one of the only places that don't make them too sweet. So many restaurants add so much sugar to their frozen alcoholic beverages, but these ones are just right. Can't wait to come to margaritaville (their outdoor patio) this summer. Kind of silly that they advertise it as a "waterfront" patio when it's so far away from the water. Ehhhh Apparently the patio is pretty sweet (I've yet to experience it) but this is one of those places that just isn't all it's talked up to be. I feel like people tend to just suggest going here out of habit a lot of the time. I mean it's not bad, but not as good as the popularity would suggest. They do have massive margaritas (which is a plus) and free chips and salsa (also a positive, especially on a budget). I'm a bit biased on the menu side of things since I'm a veggie myself but it has all the typical mexican fair. The veggie fajitas are pretty solid but once again, nothing to write home about. We stopped there on our way home from a long road trip and it happened to fall on my milestone birthday last night. My husband ensured Peaches, our lackluster and spacey server whom we repeatedly needed to make the same request for (napkins, takeout box, etc) twice or more in order to get her to recall it, knew it because he told her! She said they'd serenade or offer dessert or something. It doesn't matter as I got JACK. The place wasn't busy at all at 9:30 pm yet SHE WAS SO NOT a Peach simply brought us the bill with zero acknowledgment of the occasion. The food was fine but with this sort of service, I can promise I'll never again be returning. I used to be a server so my husband and I are usually very generous tippers. Oh, update - (one week later) the manager, Hombre, spoke to me the next day and apologized for them admittedly ruining my birthday, but since I live in Toronto and he couldn't make it up to me personally, he'd "send me something in the mail." I have not only received NOTHING but when my husband called tonight to follow up, Hombre was gone for the night but the other manager, a guy named Dawn, knew nada about this incident, nor was anything documented or written down. I live in Toronto and came to Kingston and went to the Lone Star because it was in my hotel. The food here is sooooo good. I have gone to Lone Star in Toronto and loved that one too. Presentation was great. We both had burrito platter (I forgot the official name). The portion was huge. We shared a pitcher of beer. Came with ice cold frosted glasses which actually made Canadian taste good. Staff was very friendly. Had to search for the waitress to get the check but appreciated that she saw me looking and came over. If you have not been to Lone Star, you need to go and try it. For both platters and a pitcher of beer, it only came to $60.00 which is a pretty good value. read more

There wasn't anyone waiting to be seated and there were filthy tables waiting to be cleaned. We moved on down the road where our money was appreciated. Having eaten here a bunch of times on my own when I owned a boat and often with work in a group, I would have to say that the food here, at best, is "nondescript" or as Merriam-Webster defines it, "lacking distinctive or interesting qualities". What it does have going for it is the very friendly staff and large Coronas. If you only want a place to have a few very cold beers and some finger foods; then look no further. It also seems to me to be a favourite spot for people with kids - I'm thinking the daiquiris help mom drown out the kid noises. read more

Salsa had good cilantro flavor. Both of us had fajitas, one chicken one steak. Very few peppers, mostly onions, flavor was good with unlimited house made tortillas. The accompaniments (cheese, lettuce, tomatoes) very small portion. Tennessee, our bartender was excellent, friendly and efficient. Limited draft selection. Nice "Texas" atmosphere. One thing I can't understand, and it happens in more places than just here, but above the bar there are four tvs mounted next to each other but only two programs, why not four tvs and four different programs? We were in Kingston while a family member was having a medical procedure and wanted a nice comfortable but upbeat restaurant to have lunch. We sat outside which was lovely. When we arrived there were 3 tables with folks and I'm not sure how many tables were occupied inside. I counted 6 servers, so we anticipated quick service. Our drinks arrived quickly which was nice. The server took our food order also rather quickly however it took 30 min for the food to arrive. Two of the three orders were correct (caesar salad, sweet potato fries, not hard to screw up) but the third was wrong. I ordered a chicken wrap and got a chicken sandwich. It took 15 min for them to come back with my chicken wrap and my parents were done with their (wilted romaine lettuce) caesar salad and fries before I even got started. No real apology but just super baffling considering how few diners were there in the restaurant. Made us wonder what happens when its full! Food was a 6/10, service 2/10. Also, I don't understand why you need to ask for salt and pepper and 'hot sauce' at a Tex/Mex restaurant. These things should be on every table regardless (not to mention it took 5 min for them to arrive after asking)... poor front of the house policies. This place could be good if the staff was trained more, put down their handheld devices and simply paid more attention to diners needs. Our server WAS friendly, smiled a lot but I think she really didn't know what to say every time we had to ask for something more. Again, higher standards are really not that hard to achieve with a bit more attentiveness and attention to detail. We probably would not return considering all the other dining options Kingston has to offer. read more
