I am absolutely furious with this facility. I went out of my way to rescue a stray dog and bring it to safety. Instead of thanking me, the staff treated me like a criminal. They aggressively questioned me. Making it seem as if the dog was mine and that I was just trying to dump it. It is disgusting to face hostility and power trips when trying to save an animal. This is an ongoing pattern of garbage behavior. I recently sent a friend here to turn in another homeless dog she found on the street. The staff treated her exactly the same way. They confiscated her ID, refused to even take or help the dog, and forced her to walk away and re-home the animal herself. Your toxic staff is a disgrace and they actively discourage people from helping animals in need. Management needs to fix this immediately. I am never coming back. A Heartwarming Visit to Long Beach Animal Care Services My husband and I recently revisited the Long Beach Animal Care Services shelter, and I noticed something pretty encouraging this time that there seemed to be fewer stray animals, especially puppies. It made me wonder if it's a sign that fewer are being abandoned, or better yet, more are finding their forever homes. Either way, it felt like a positive change. Right now, the animals available for adoption include a few rabbits, some cats, and quite a few dogs. The staff and volunteers are truly dedicated. They keep everything clean, take great care of the animals, and clearly want each one to be adopted into a loving home as soon as possible. A public service agency for the residents of Long Beach. The good. Long Beach is a no kill shelter and priority is given to animal care. The bad customer service is an adversarial nightmare. Forms go missing , very demanding as to the forms you must complete. I was there about cats but had to answer questions that pertained to a dog. Then an extra cat only section. After turning in my paperwork I received a message that I needed to do more paperwork. Given that I handed in the paperwork in person and was there for a good deal of time it surprised me that the needed items were not brought to my attention earlier. I am told that cat follow up is two months out. Dogs two years. Expect hostility dressed as process. Unprofessional conversation about other clients & callers. I recommend going to adopt or utilize the store. If you need service prepare for a long wait , red tape , misrepresentation and regret. read more

As a cyclist on the LA RIver trail, we encountered a dog down in the river channel who was tied to an overturned chair. He appeared emaciated with his ribs showing and I guessed he was a labrador/pitbull mix. The bank of the channel was very steep but 2 young men climbed down to see if they could free the dog. He barked loudly and they moved away. I called 911 and was transferred to Long Beach Animal Control and Rescue and I described the situation. There were about a 1/2 dozen concerned onlookers on the river bank who remained. The Animal Control service freed this helpless animal from its dire situation. They are the dog's and our heroes! read more

My family's experience with Long Beach Animal Care Services was absolutely disgraceful. My father-in-law, still grieving the recent loss of his wife and their beloved dog of 15 years (which they had adopted from this very facility), came here in hopes of finding a new companion. What he encountered was not kindness or support, but outright judgment and hostility from the staff. He found a puppy that he immediately loved, but the staff treated him like an outcast, as though he wasn't good enough to adopt one of their dogs. They absurdly claimed that the dog didn't like him, basing their decision on nothing more than the puppy not immediately running up to him. This wasn't just a one-time issue--he had to return to the facility four separate times to visit the puppy before the staff finally relented. The way he was treated--routinely dismissed, judged, and even belittled--was dehumanizing and completely unnecessary. It's clear this facility is more focused on feeding the egos of its staff, many of whom seemed to relish their power in the adoption process, than actually helping animals find good homes. The staff, with their dyed hair and holier-than-thou attitudes, seemed more interested in playing gatekeepers than recognizing my father-in-law as the kind, responsible pet owner he's proven to be for over 15 years. Their excuse that the puppy "didn't like him" is as ridiculous as it is insulting. Building trust with a rescue animal takes time--a concept they apparently don't understand or don't care about. The entire experience left us disgusted. This facility made my father-in-law feel unwelcome and unworthy during one of the most vulnerable times in his life. The only reason he ultimately adopted the puppy was because he refused to give up after being treated so poorly. Long Beach Animal Care Services is failing both its animals and the people who come there to give them loving homes. If you're considering adopting, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere--this place is nothing more than a toxic environment where good people are judged and demeaned by staff who seem more invested in their personal grievances than the welfare of the animals they're supposed to serve. read more

Truly amazed at this location. Was expecting a depressing dark place but it was a clean, friendly animal sanctuary. When we drove uo to the entrance, we were directed where to park. I was delighted to find out that there are actually two organizations that rescue dogs and cats right next to each other. It can get confusing as to which on you're at, but the workers are very helpful. The rescued animals look very well cared for at both facilities. We originally came here to donate blankets and towels with the open mind to see our options. Highly recommend this place if you are ready to commit to caring for a rescue. read more

This shelter failed us. My husband and I were so excited to get our first dog and let the shelter know about it being our first time. We took home Bruce, an excited 3 y/o pitbull. We were so excited but 6 months later we are still struggling. With issues everyday, and 2 situations that were safety issues, we made the hard decision to surrender. They would not take him back because it's been over a month. We've been trying to find rescues that will help and they all recommended the place we got him. We went back to LBACS and they recommended us to a kill shelter. I have been looking for dog for about a month that would be a good match for me and my household. I encountered a gorgeous tri-colored "long-haired chihuahua" on the ACS website and put in an application. ACS called her "Chewy" and certainly she loved to chew and gnaw on anything soft. Although she was 8 months old, she still had a lot of the puppy rambunctiousness in her. ADOPTION APPLICATION PROCESS. After putting in an application and receiving confirmation of receipt, it was reviewed after several days and I eventually received a phone call within the course of a week. Usually I don't pick up for numbers I do not recognize, but I knew it was from a City of Long Beach Department. It showed up as (562)570-5000, which is the default number when someone calls from a City of Long Beach landline. We set up a meet-and-greet appointment, the same week. MEET & GREET. I was provided a phone number to text upon arrival. ACS had a white tent set up with pamphlets and a log of lost/found animals. I texted and was taken to the kennels to meet my sweet dog. While escorted to the back, I was told the dog was shy and timid. I get it--its an animal shelter; kennels and cold walls. She was shy and it took a minute for the shelter staff to get her to come out of her kennel and out into the grassy area. We walked into the sunlight and Chewy immediately jumped into my arms. She chose ME. :D WINDING UP PROCESS. After the meet and greet, I was explained that she received all her shots and was recently spayed. ACS provided me with a folder of her licensing documents, certification of spay/neuter, flea prevention info, information on her chip and how to change owner information, and a voucher for her first vet appointment. I signed the documents online and paid for the adoption fee of $91. In total, it was about $124 for the processing fee, licensing, etc. I am now a happy owner of a tri-colored long-haired chihuahua although I think she's probably a mix of part chihuahua and something else. Although its nice to name dogs after an attribute or some personality trait, I am sure that she will grow out of this puppy-like chewing stage. I decided to re-name her to something more appropriate--Chloe. Good luck to anyone in search of a pet. ACS is an excellent choice for adoption. Adoption fees are affordable, which allows most households to afford a fur baby. I was very pleased that my Chloe come home spayed and ready to go. The adoption fees were far less than I would have paid had I needed to get the procedure done on my own, bought my own flea meds, microchip, etc.. You would be surprised to see the animals that come through here. Even if muts or pound puppies are not your type, I have seen owner-surrendered purebreds and designer-type dogs as strays come through ACS. Keep your eyes open, and check back often. read more

There is a stray cat in my neighborhood. Well, I've noticed him gradually losing weight/ diarrhea/ sneezing with really thick green mucus. He likes my yard bc there is a lot of grass and plants so I see him deteriorating. I can't afford to care for him, I've already rescued 3 cats in the last 2 yrs. I called animal control 2 weeks ago and they told me if I catch him and take him in, they'll treat and rerelease OR put him down if in his best interest. I was finally able to take him in and the lady at the desk was very rude/ condescending and cold. She didn't open the carrier. She glanced and very rudely said "he looks fine to me. Do you have any video/ picture proof?" No one told me when I called that I needed documentation showing him being sick. I'm suppose to just allow a very sick cat around my pets and other animals in the neighborhood? I work in healthcare in an emergency department and I get they're overworked and burnt out.. but I'd NEVER treat someone the way I was treated. Terrible. You are suppose to be an origination that helps people and animals.. shame on you for hiring people that are not empathetic at all. Do better. read more

To begin with I had found two kittens in the alley and I told them that I did not want to leave them there because they look hungry and in distress I brought them in and said that I should have left them there and it is not their responsibility to receive animals that are injured or in need. I explain but that is very inhumane lady in the front desk had a very nasty attitude. I just saw four women in the front admissions desk gossiping about I don't know what but customer service really needs to improve and I believe this should be a boycotted place because it is for a lost and found building. Recently, my dog passed away and they were so helpful answering my questions via phone and so kind and gentle when we brought my dog's body in for safe disposal/cremation. They offer a practically priced cremation option ($25). They also have big bins out front to collect pet item donations to support their shelter activities. I would give this organization 0 stars if I could. We found a stray dog near a freeway and scanned her microchip with a vet, who said her name is "Hooker" and that the phone number that was registered isn't the owner. We tried to do the right thing by taking her to LBACS because she had clearly been abused and bred. She was absolutely filthy and covered with rashes and fleas. We called ahead and the person on the phone told us to bring her in. When we arrived we were told were full and couldn't take her. We spent 4 hours in the parking lot trying to figure out what to do since we couldn't take her home and we wanted her to be safe. During this time, one of the employees came out and recognized her name (come on, who names their dog that if they love them). He ran a search and said she had been through their system as the owner is a homeless person who was cited for breeding her under a highway bridge. This was approx 1 year ago and it was apparent that she had recently had a litter. She's only two years old... After hours of waiting and calling every resource we could, ACS dispatched a unit to come and take her. 5 days later we have learned that LBACS RETURNED HER TO HER OWNER!!!!!! Yes, the same owner that they cited for breeding her under a bridge. Yes, the same owner that they are aware is homeless. They did not even spay her before returning her. WHO COULD LET THIS HAPPEN?! This is a huge oversight and they clearly do not give two shits about the safety or wellbeing of animals. They knowingly returned this sweet animal to a dangerous situation that they had RECORD of! My husband and I stopped by the Long Beach shelter last Sunday. We had recently started our search for a new family member. I had browsed the online listings and made note of a few dogs I wanted to check out. The setup at the Long Beach shelter is a little confusing since the facility is shared by both the SPCA and Long Beach Animal Care Services. When we first walked through the lefthand part (I think that's the SPCA area), we didn't find the dogs I had seen online. So we asked a volunteer and she was really helpful in checking the list of names in that area and then redirecting us to the righthand part (I think that's the Long Beach Animal Care Services area) to find more. She handed us over to another volunteer (Ryan?) from Long Beach Animal Care. Both facilities are relatively clean and well-lit, with nice atriums in the "cottages". The dogs' kennels seemed to be well-maintained - especially for a city shelter - and they had a variety of toys and blankets. Ryan walked us through the buildings and in a kennel there we found our adorable little girl, now named "Mocha". Ryan was very patient with us as we met her in the off-leash Meet 'n' Greet area (a nice big pen, maybe 20' x 40') and then he walked her on leash around the facility so we could see how she behaved. When it was clear we were getting serious about adopting, we asked if we could see her walk by a cat since we have a cat at home. The cat volunteer was also very nice and patient and graciously accommodated our request, taking Mocha to see a cat in the main adoption entrance and allowing us to watch her reaction. We then asked to see her reaction to a dog, since Mocha hadn't yet joined the play group, and both volunteers were again helpful and patient. We decided to go for it and adopt her and she has been so wonderful and loving! Mocha is in great condition despite being at the shelter for 13 days. Her records note that she was spayed, dewormed, and vaccinated; we were given the detailed medical record for her spay surgery. It's clear that the people here care about animals and their potential adopters. We had a great experience, and found our new best friend! read more

What are we paying our taxes for! I filed a complaint because my neighbor's dog continuously barks for hours at a time and my neighbor won't answer the door so that we can have a conversation. He's behind a 10ft metal fence so I can't see him. I filled out all the paperwork from online and submitted it to file a noise complaint. They sent me other papers were had to document each time the dog barked what time he barked how long he barked and provide recordings. Even after doing all this which amounted to a virtual civil suit I was told that I had to find a neighbor to document all of the same information before they could do something regarding this barking do!! THIS IS UTTERLY RIDICULOUS!! Just got the run around so they don't have to do their job!! It's been over a year and I'm still having this same problem. It's not fair that I have to wear earplugs to take a nap in the daytime or enjoy my own backyard. It's time to find out when Staycee Dains, Director of Animal Services at City of Long Beach is up for re-election!! Another time I was held captive in my car by a loose dog on my street. I called animal control for help but was forwarded to a message that told me to call the fire department because they were closed. No one answered the number at the fire department so I was forced to sit in my car for two hours until the dog finally left and I could go into my own house. read more

Animal "CARE" is a joke! I called them to remove a sick animal from my yard, that *I* can't help. Please note that I'm handicapped, but *I* still managed to catch the animal in the carrier in the first place. When the "worker" got here, he banged on the carrier that the ALREADY DISTRESSED animal was in and the FAT A** wouldn't even bend over to help me humanely move the animal from one carrier to another. The animal was in distress but not fighting or thrashing. Resisting, but it was actually a very sweet, very scared animal. The fat man who wouldn't bend over to help an old, handicapped woman transfer the distressed, sick animal, tried to reach in with a pair of grabbers and traumatized the frightened and sick animal further. He was SO INEPT, the animal escaped. Now he's out in the neighborhood with a highly contagious disease...most likely infecting neighbors pets and the other homeless animals that people in the neighborhood care for. I called in a complaint to the head of department and he actually made excuses for the "worker." He also went on to say "we've changed. Now we have a medical team who assesses the sick animal and provides treatment if it will benefit the animal. We don't just put them down anymore." Tell THAT to all the people in the neighborhood who are going to have sick pets with a very expensive, extensive and excruciating treatment plan as well as costly yard decontamination. THIS animal REALLY NEEDED VETERINARIAN HELP and it was denied due to a lazy "worker." This agency should NOT have "CARE" in it's name and should hire people who ACTUALLY CARE; their reputation will NEVER improve as long as they operate with this level of incompetence; lazy staff and excuses for said staff. read more

My grandson and I were in a search for a new pet/friend as my previous small dog had recently passed. I did a lot of searching and browsing on the internet for a large dog. On my way to a shelter to Newport Beach on the freeway, I saw the sign for the Pet Adoption Animal Village (SPCALA). We had our boy scout den meeting at the shelter today. It was honestly a very pleasant surprise. We never realized how big the facility is, and how much care they provide the animals of the surrounding communities. We worked with Megan Ignacio to setup the tour, and had a fantastic time. The boys got a first hand look at some services that the shelter provides, and had a great time meeting some of the animals and read to them. It was both educational and entertaining. It's a great experience for the scouts and parents alike. It was also heart warming to see all the staff working so hard to provide the animals with the best care, and to provide community members with the best service possible! read more

Absolutely horrible service and lack of ability to help in any way. Today is the second time I my dog has been attacked. He's 12 lbs. He's always leashed when we walk. Twice he has been attacked by the SAME Pit Bull. This dog is aggressive and at least 100lbs. Nothing was done the first time. Nothing happened today. Not one employee asked what the people looked like, what the dog looked like, name. Oh yes. I have the dog's name. It's apparent that this is an issue I need to take as high as I can. We adopted our female husky from this facility and were really impressed with how they care for their animals and how clean it was. The adoption coordinator Julie was quick to respond and very nice and accommodating over the phone as well. You could tell in the short amount of time our pup was there, that they spent a lot of time to get to know her personality and even starting teaching her some commands. We got to spend a lot of time playing with her and getting to know her to decide if it was a good fit. All of the workers here are great and you can tell they love what they do. I came here several years ago on a weekend to help my sister pick out a cat and it was amazing. Tons of visitors looking to adopt, cats in the front to interact with, escorted tours of the cat cottages in the back with knowledgeable staff. Clean, organized, and left with a great feeling and a new pet for my sister. Sadly this does not seem to be the case anymore. I went there this past weekend to adopt a second cat for myself and it was really sad. The front area had more staff than cats. Seemed like a ghost town in comparison to my last visit. But the cat cottage in the back was far worse. First, they tell you to just wander around unescorted so people could wander into areas they really should not especially since it was unclear which rooms had supplies and such and which rooms had adoptable cats. It smelled awful (and I've been to other shelters and this shelter and know there is no way it would smell that bad if cleaned regularly). Many were sick with URIs. It wasn't busy, and they did not seem short staffed. Not even including the staff in the front building, I saw 2 staff at tables outside the cat cottage and 3 others randomly in the cat cottage. So why were sick kittens sitting with their own dried throw up and poop? The few cats in the front area and the dogs seemed much better taken care of, but seeing the cat cottage was heartbreaking. Also at one point I asked a staff member about cats their website said were available for adoption, and they told me they were being fostered and fostered animals weren't available for adoption unless the foster decided to bring them back. Pretty sure that's not how fostering is supposed to work when they could just adopt? But all around, I am really just writing this review with the hope that conditions will improve. This review is about my experience with picking up my lost pet and not the actual facility, the facility seemed clean and very well-kept up. I am extremely upset and I must write something regarding it . I have been involved with animal rescue since I was 8 years old , I fostered, transported many animals throughout my years, I've donated my time , money, held charity events. etc and have personally saved many cats, dogs , and rabbits in the last decade . I am huge supporter of serval different dog rescues, including the ASPCA. Last week my dog Coco who is 13 years old today got out of our yard and walked right past us while loading our car. She wondered 3 doors down to an elderly Neighbors house who didn't know who she belonged to and Was then taken to this facility. Instead of paying my fines ( which I'm okay with , ) and getting my dog back and walking out, I was told I would Be getting a "notice to comply due to her condition? " Her condition " what condition ?? The vet tech ( who isn't even a medical professional) who " couldn't give a diagnosis" she said - then handed me a A paper filled with " concerns" regarding ? Lumps , her ears and skin irritation on tail ) ? Is this a joke ? Are you actually implying to me that I am neglecting my dog and forcing me to take her to the vet even though I have $7000 of medical bills right here and paperwork for half of these issues ? You didn't even take a moment to look at ? Oh wait "Her conditions ". I mean. As a pet owner I know that it is my responsibility to make sure that my pet is taken care of and sees a vet regularly. And as a pet owner it is also my choice at 13 years old whether Or not I'd like to move forward with surgeries ( for non life threating issues ) regarding the lumps that are on her body did you consider her age , might you have considered that she is half Beagle, and they tend to have smellier ears then dogs with open ear canals . So when I bring you back the BS paperwork you ask for then you have the Audacity to tell this isn't enough there isn't a "treatment plan ?( THERE IS NO TREATMENT PLAN) my dog doesn't have any ISSUES !!!! You have stepped outside the regular duty of care and concern for animals that are truly being neglected and YOU are on some rampage to get whatever other money you can from me. This isn't about helping animals anymore or my dogs wellbeing it's about getting the city more money any which way you can . You wonder why pets are left in pounds when they are lost, ( not everyone who loses a pet is irresponsible, sometimes accidents happen to good people truly ) it's not right you make people jump through hoops , keep forking out money and don't take the time to looks at documentation and medical history that is provided too you. Instead you walk out from behind a closed door, ( a vet tech ) have zero answers for any questions I ask , and had a me a Piece of paper like you actually know something about the well being of my pet . If you're going to do your job do it, aren't you there to help animals? Then help them don't give the people that are actually decent people that love their pet such a run around .
