The Driveway off of 7th Street is easy to miss, as the sign is small. I've been fishing the Ocean and Freshwater for many years. I started fly fishing about two years ago, but only gone two trips. Well, I thought I was fly fishing just fine and catching fish during my yearly backpacking trips in the Eastern Sierras. A co-worker had taken beginner's casting lessons and had recommended for me to take the classes to improve on my casting. I had visited the facility on the night during a club competition. I saw the fun and camaraderie the fly casters were having. I located the beginners casting class in Long Beach Casting Club's website. The club is the home to many local Master Fly Casting and FFF Certified Fly Casting Instructors. On premises are a casting pond and the club house. Stadium style lights are usually on Tuesday and Thursdays evenings. Class starts with lecture and videos inside the club house, then they are divided into four groups and each group has several instructors to help students with their casting for the evening at the casting pond. The classes run about five weeks, and each week they teach a different cast. Classes start 7pm sharp, so if you are late, you will miss the 15 minutes of lecture and videos. Each week, you will have the same group of instructors who will help you with your casting and any questions you may have. The first night they go over with suggestions on proper equipments, Fly Rod, Fly Reel, Fly Line, Fly Line Backing and Tapered Leader. Class suggest that you have your own equipment, 9ft 5/6wt balance outfit as I brought my lightweight 7.5ft 3wt outfit that I use for my backpacking trips. If you need assistance in assembling the rod, reel, and/or fly line, the instructors will help you, just bring them in at least 30-40 minutes before the class starts. They teach the proper rod grip, Pick up and Lay Down, False Cast, Roll Cast, Shooting Line, Off Shoulder Casts and Line Mending. I thought I knew how to cast a fly line, but I was amazed how much I improved after each class. Anyone can attend these classes, men and women, if you have a desire to learn. I am happy that I had taken the classes at Long Beach Casting Club. I now have more confidence to tackle the Eastern Sierras, Lakes, streams and maybe Bone fish on a fly during my next vacation. The Long Beach Casting club also has rod building, fly tying, on-the-water outings and intermediate fly casting classes. If you are a seasoned caster, but need any help, stop by as previously mentioned, they have instructor or advanced students that can help.

We did do the jackpot, but to be honest it makes no sense cause there's professional people there that know how to catch fish so don't be in the jackpot unless you really know what to do. The fish are plentiful and hungry. - They had plenty of chairs, buckets, nets, etc. - The rented rods were pre-hooked and weighted (though some were missing hooks, so check before you grab one). Cons: - We arrived about 10 minutes after they were supposed to open but the gates were still closed and there was already a short line of people waiting. Thankfully we only had to wait another 5 minutes before they opened. - The fish are SO easy to catch that we had 4 in about 10-15 minutes (though one broke the line and got away). At $12 per pound, the cost was over $125 including our entrance, 2 rod rentals, bait, and the 3 fish we took home. That was about what we expected in terms of price - but it was a long 1 hour drive for 10-15 minutes of action. - The biggest disappointment was that the website said we could have our fish cleaned and fileted there - but once we arrived they said it wasn't available this weekend (a sign indicated it also wasn't available last weekend). I had tried calling the day prior to verify everything, but all they have is a recorded message. We have neither the tools nor knowledge to clean the fish ourselves - so now we are figuring that out. That had been one of the biggest reasons we chose this "easy" experience. All in all, I'm still glad that we went and that my son caught his first fish - but just be aware what you might be in for and plan accordingly.

Located at the mouth of the LA River, it's surprising to see such a large natural area right in the heart of downtown Long Beach. Although the Los Cerrritos wetlands in east Long Beach are much bigger, those wetlands are restricted access, so Golden Shores is really the largest salt marsh accessible to the public. The wetlands include several different salt marsh grasses (like California cord grass and salt grass), as well as pickelweed. Mudflats and open tidal channels provide a diversity of habitats that provide foraging grounds for many different birds. This is a great place to watch egrets, herons, ducks, terns and a variety of shorebirds. You can watch these birds through the fence that keeps you out of the marsh. This fence is kind of ugly, and it clearly tempts the uncivilized elements of our city to dump their trash into the marsh. I've called the city of Long Beach to report about this illegal dumping. There are plans to remove the fencing and improve the upland areas, as part of the LA River Greenway. There are some interpretive signs that inform you about wetland ecology and wildlife. The upland areas are landscaped with a mix of native and non-native plants. The LA River Bikepath goes right around the perimeter of the park, and the Passport Bus stops nearby at Catalina landing, so it's easily accessible without a car. There's a nearby parking lot too, if you must drive. Also: This is a great place to get a view of the Queen Mary. Most people never view her from this angle.
