The Driveway off of 7th Street is easy to miss, as the sign is small. I've been fishing the Ocean and Freshwater for many years. I started fly fishing about two years ago, but only gone two trips. Well, I thought I was fly fishing just fine and catching fish during my yearly backpacking trips in the Eastern Sierras. A co-worker had taken beginner's casting lessons and had recommended for me to take the classes to improve on my casting. I had visited the facility on the night during a club competition. I saw the fun and camaraderie the fly casters were having. I located the beginners casting class in Long Beach Casting Club's website. The club is the home to many local Master Fly Casting and FFF Certified Fly Casting Instructors. On premises are a casting pond and the club house. Stadium style lights are usually on Tuesday and Thursdays evenings. Class starts with lecture and videos inside the club house, then they are divided into four groups and each group has several instructors to help students with their casting for the evening at the casting pond. The classes run about five weeks, and each week they teach a different cast. Classes start 7pm sharp, so if you are late, you will miss the 15 minutes of lecture and videos. Each week, you will have the same group of instructors who will help you with your casting and any questions you may have. The first night they go over with suggestions on proper equipments, Fly Rod, Fly Reel, Fly Line, Fly Line Backing and Tapered Leader. Class suggest that you have your own equipment, 9ft 5/6wt balance outfit as I brought my lightweight 7.5ft 3wt outfit that I use for my backpacking trips. If you need assistance in assembling the rod, reel, and/or fly line, the instructors will help you, just bring them in at least 30-40 minutes before the class starts. They teach the proper rod grip, Pick up and Lay Down, False Cast, Roll Cast, Shooting Line, Off Shoulder Casts and Line Mending. I thought I knew how to cast a fly line, but I was amazed how much I improved after each class. Anyone can attend these classes, men and women, if you have a desire to learn. I am happy that I had taken the classes at Long Beach Casting Club. I now have more confidence to tackle the Eastern Sierras, Lakes, streams and maybe Bone fish on a fly during my next vacation. The Long Beach Casting club also has rod building, fly tying, on-the-water outings and intermediate fly casting classes. If you are a seasoned caster, but need any help, stop by as previously mentioned, they have instructor or advanced students that can help.

The fish are plentiful and hungry. - They had plenty of chairs, buckets, nets, etc. - The rented rods were pre-hooked and weighted (though some were missing hooks, so check before you grab one). Cons: - We arrived about 10 minutes after they were supposed to open but the gates were still closed and there was already a short line of people waiting. Thankfully we only had to wait another 5 minutes before they opened. - The fish are SO easy to catch that we had 4 in about 10-15 minutes (though one broke the line and got away). At $12 per pound, the cost was over $125 including our entrance, 2 rod rentals, bait, and the 3 fish we took home. That was about what we expected in terms of price - but it was a long 1 hour drive for 10-15 minutes of action. - The biggest disappointment was that the website said we could have our fish cleaned and fileted there - but once we arrived they said it wasn't available this weekend (a sign indicated it also wasn't available last weekend). I had tried calling the day prior to verify everything, but all they have is a recorded message. We have neither the tools nor knowledge to clean the fish ourselves - so now we are figuring that out. That had been one of the biggest reasons we chose this "easy" experience. All in all, I'm still glad that we went and that my son caught his first fish - but just be aware what you might be in for and plan accordingly.

Checked in by paying the entrance and rentals fees and was given quick directions on how to start fishing. My son ended up caching 2 fish relatively quickly. There was a gentleman sitting next to the pond who helps release the hooks from the fish if you do not wish to do so yourself. He had to rehook our rod a few times and did so with friendliness. Whenever I had a question, they were always helpful. Even had the guys filet our fish for us for an extra charge. My son had fun and also enjoyed watching the RC car tracks that are immediately next door when we got done. Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a nice experience with your kids. Entrance fee was $7/person Rod rentals was $10 Fish per pound was $12 (no catch and release) And to have them filet them was $2/fish I would definitely come back for another visit!!!

Deckhands Eric and Bryan (Cook?) provided excellent service, quickly assisting everyone even before being asked, I noted them scouting the desk to see where they could help. We never made it to Catalina Island but had fun fishing the Oil Rigs catching yellowtail, skipjack, bonita and such. Last trip about a week ago bait was very scarce. I guess they found them but they were were huge sardines (smaller ones may have been more effective as we kept retrieving chewed up bait fish) that died fast, guessing no curing time. Obon and I both lost a couple of yellows after lengthy battles. Tip: any weaknesses in your game, will be exposed in monster yellowtail battles, make sure your knots are tight! All in all, it was a great day out on the water and I want to thank the El Patron crew for making it happen.

I have gone onto many, many, many fishing trips in my life however this time was the first time I took my grandsons. The (El Capitan) the boat including the captain and his crew were absolutely rude, not organized, not helpful. we departed at 5am to Catalina Island and came back at 5pm to the Long Beach Port. Nobody on the Boat but one person, caught any fish, the captain set anchor in one spot in the front part of the island and didn't move all day, this isn't what we paid for, they are supposed to accommodate and move around if fish aren't available - they have the proper technology to provide us the experience. Very disappointed, won't be using them again.

Parents had brought their children, making it an all ages event. The sight was captivating as the fireworms swarmed near the surface of the water for a few seconds before diving back in. It is said that these creatures rise from the seabed during specific moon phases to spawn at the surface, creating an unforgettable display.

There is a concrete path for strolling or jogging around the marina. View is amazing from the grass. Boats, and wake boarders performing tricks and such. Across the street where the boat can dock on the beach is full of people beaching it on the sand. There are restrooms there. No dogs allowed. Not really meant for swimming and playing in the waters but we still see people do it. Call LBC Park and Recs to make sure this patch of areas are not reserved for any events too. No overnight parking. Located near the Rowing Association.

The only thing (danger) you need to look out for is overhead and side aggressive rod n' reel "casters" and those who use multiple hooks where it feels like potential hazard and an accident waiting to happen. We use squid as bait and it's resilient to the water and waves. It's good for families and kids, but come early to get a spot and avoid the sun. It's good for maybe 1 hr for kids to inevitably get bored or frustrated, but for adults chillin' almost like playing a round of golf where conversation and relaxing is a big part of a social activity, you can stay for hours, just bring a chair. Also, bring a hat, sunscreen, cold water and snacks. Parking (for free) could be easy if you know where to look, read the signs and are willing to walk. The people there are generally friendly 'tho we did encounter a few territorial grumpy older men, par for the course and not spoilers of a good time for us.

The life guard huts have friendly staff and attentive to their post and jobs. This State Park has moved on to digital payment - you can now scan the QR code located at every lot and pay the $21 day use fee if parking inside. Note that all lots get pretty full by noon on Summer weekends.
