Therefore, we were excited when one of our favorite couples to hang out with invited us to Smokey Ridge Ranch for wine tasting. Upon arriving, we were greeted by a friendly employee who urgently ran behind the bar to attend to us. Since we were pending the arrival of our friends, we decided to get the party started with two glasses of tempranillo (the employee kindly allowed for us to sample it before purchasing it). While we awaited the arrival of our friends, my wife and I found a picnic table in the shade. Once our friends arrived they ordered a wine tasting flight to share. As we put the finishing touches on our tempranillo, an employee came by to see if we were ready for another round. Since it was a 100 degree day, we figured that it would be wise to order something cold and refreshing. Although we have never been fans of rosé, it just felt like the appropriate thing to order. We enjoyed our time at Smokey Ridge Ranch, next time we will bring a charcuterie board to enjoy with their large pours of wine!

What a nice little find…read more This tiny museum is full of beautifully designed displays that document what life was like in the area's early days of gold mining and lumber. Hundreds of well-maintained items and nicely-written signs tell the story. Check out the parlor with an organ and sewing machine, the medical gear, and the amazing wooden model of the lumber mill. The docent who was there the day we visited, Sally Drone, is a very long-time resident and had plenty of information beyond what the displays showed. Articulate and helpful, she had a ton of knowledge and insight. She also knows pretty much everyone and everything in town! Adjacent to the museum is a working blacksmith shop with true-to-the-era tools and techniques. They make real tools and items (ask them what a courting candle is). Troy Simester, replete in leather apron will talk to you as long as you like about how it all works and demonstrate metalworking. You'll also see a prison cell, old fire truck, and a yard full of gold mining and logging equipment. It's all free (donations appreciated).

Well, their umbrellas were NOT secured, there was a strong gust of wind that lifted the heavy umbrella out from the table, knocked-over drinks, spilled drinks on my girlfriend and our food, the umbrella could have hit and injured her and their response was just "Are you okay?" AFTER I asked my girlfriend if she was alright. No "was anything damaged?" or "Can I get you a towell, or at least replace your drinks?" No, they just took the umbrellas away in a golf cart. Thanks for the mess, the ruined food, spilled drinks from your unsecured umbrellas, and not offering to compensate us at all.

Tickets for the lavender bloom are seasonal and opening dates can vary based on the timing of the bloom each year. They do a great job of posting their bloom updates and open hours. Buy entry tickets in advance and be ready to show them on your phone. On the day I visited, they had a local coffee vendor who was serving lavender infused products and some local makers on site. The farm is not far from the Sacramento and Folsom areas and you can spend the day visiting other local growers or businesses not too far away. What I really enjoyed about the farm were their strategically placed benches and lawns. You can sit in the shade and enjoy the fields from afar after taking time to walk directly through them. Photo ops abound! There's also a farm barn with their wonderful products such as lotions, soaps and culinary items made from their own lavender. If you missed their opening in 2024, be sure to check them out in next year's bloom. Such a pretty and peaceful place!

John Fountain & Benjamin Tallman's soda water factory!…read more Built in 1852 by John Fountain and Benjamin Tallman in 1852 this beautiful two-story masonry building is now the house of Placerville Historical Museum. Apparently, during the gold rush the river and creeks were polluted by mining activities and the water in them was unsafe for drinking. These two gentlemen saw an opportunity and started carbonating and bottling spring water and selling it to the miners. In 1981 the building was donated to El Dorado County Historical Society by Fay Rupley Cannon in 1983 opened as a museum. In the museum you will see and learn a lot about the history of the town and immediate area if you spend 30-45 minutes there and make sure to spend a few minutes speaking with the very nice people who are there and ready to tell you about the history of their beautiful town.

I had family coming into town, and wanted to give them a fun experience in Sacramento. My nieces…read more(13, 11, 8) were a great age for this...and as a bonus, the two oldest had just studied the gold rush in school. We scheduled a private tour (VERY reasonably priced, $100 for a group up to 5 and then $17 for each person after that). Our tour guide, Rich, was very passionate about gold mining, and was entertaining for the adults and the kids. In a little over 2 hours, we had his complete attention for historical information and ask any questions we wanted, and were able to tour two mines, get lots and lots of history behind it (there were so many little tidbits learned it was pretty awesome!) and then we got a lesson on how to "pan for gold" and keep what we found. The tour includes that everyone will get gold (flakes) and possibly gemstones (we found peridot, garnet, something that looked like emerald but I can't remember what he called it, if not emerald, and quartz). Everyone left with a 1/2 ounce vile of their findings--and the kids were beyond excited about that. My 2 year old didn't have to pay, but Rich even got a pan out for her and she was able to take away her own treasure from the tour. During the tour, Rich also let the kids get interactive and do some hammering, and also pushing of the cart - pretty awesome. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this tour! You can go tour the park without a private tour, but Rich made our experience so wonderful, everyone was raving about how much fun we had and how interesting it was in the car on the way home. My family is new to California, we have been here a year, and I felt so pleased to have found this park, and be able to share this experience with my family visiting from the midwest. I have another family member coming next month and am considering taking the tour again! Thanks for a fantastic morning, Rich!
