TL;DR The quality of the materials and installation is very good, but after being told that our account was settled, they keep calling asking for more money and never send an invoice or any other documentation. We contracted Long Fence to do an install of a new fence and a repair of an old one. The installation and repair went smoothly and we are happy with the results. Dealing with the company after words, however, has been a huge pain. Upon completion of the job, the installers didn't provide us with an invoice, but instead gave us four envelopes with hand written amounts on them and nothing else. They didn't speak English very well, so we weren't able to get an explanation on what we were supposed to do with these so we called the Long Fence office to settle up the remainder of what was owed after our deposit. They gave us an amount to pay and we payed over the phone. This amount plus the deposit didn't add up to the quote that they gave us, but they said that our bill was all settled up, so rock on. About two weeks later I started receiving calls saying that we owed more money. I stated that we were told that our account was settled, but the person on the phone said that we still owed more. I asked for an invoice showing how much we owed (I'm not in the habit of paying large sums of money to someone over the phone just because they said so). They said that they'd get an invoice to us and ended the call. To this date, I've never received an invoice. For the last six weeks, the same person calls asking for payment, and every time I ask for an invoice detailing the original amount, the amount we've already payed, and the balance remaining. I even ask them if they have my correct email address, and they say that they do and end the call. We've called the Long Fence office multiple times trying to resolve this, and are constantly told that someone will look into it. The only return contact we receive is the same person asking for payment every week. read more

They set up a time for the estimate and showed up on time, but never gave me the quote. No email, no response, and when I called in to ask about it they did not have any information. The rude lady said to call someone named "Z" (that's what he goes by) and hung up on me. If that's how you treat potential customers, I don't care to be one. read more

The manager comes out and threatens to call the police becuase I was walking in their parking lot. What kind of person does that? Find a company with a more generous spirit. I had an estimate from this company last year. They were advertising a 20% off for the area. They were 3 thousand higher than the other two companies that I had a estimate for. The other two companies were a few hundred dollars off from each other. The 20% then brought it down closer to the other companies that weren't offering a discount. I feel like they are running a scam and offering a discount that doesn't offer a true discount because they raise the price. I went with one of the other companies. read more

There is a reason why this company has one and a half stars of overall satisfaction. If I could give negative stars I would to this company. The worst experience we have ever had. The salesperson, Bill Gunnulfsen, came and gave us an estimate and we specifically spoke about removing the old fence. When the day of the fence installment came, the workers said they were not told to remove the old fence. When I called the salesperson's supervisor, Michael Smith, he said that there was no mention on the contract of removing the fence, but that he would tell the workers to remove it; not before proceeding to tell me how a great deal we had received on the one-side fence that was over $4,200.00. Then they accused us of receiving communication that we wrote the wrong amount on the checks but failed to send us the checks until we said we would not pay the remaining balance until we received the original checks we paid. When they did send the checks, we proceeded to send them the remaining balance on the invoice, not before they sent the outstanding balance to their "legal" department without giving us the 30 period to pay for the outstanding balance. Further, they did not allow the 30-day period required when sending an invoice. Literally, the most unprofessional and inept company I have ever dealt with. I had a really bad experience with this company and do not recommend them for fence installation. On the day of fence installation, they decided to cancel because of the weather. We could all see it was going to rain the day before but they couldn't call the day before to tell us they were going to cancel. Then when it came to reschedule and, they wanted to reschedule on another forecasted rainy day. When I told the supervisor that, they should reschedule on a sunny day, he was awfully rude. After multiple phone calls, I managed to get my deposit back, because I don't want to deal with rude employees at a company when I may need service in the future. There are many better fence companies out there. These guys are over scheduled, rude, difficult to get in touch with as well. Our salesman pretty much disappeared after we paid a deposit. read more

I have mixed reviews of Long Fence. The workmen did a tremendous job and I am very happy with the end product. I am however not happy with the administrative part of the engagement. We had an estimate done, prior to a border survey. The salesperson gave us a quote and indicated they would issue an amendment after the survey was done to ensure the measurements. The amendment was drafted after the survey was done, I added a gate and decided not to install part of the fence because of tree roots. With that said, the difference amounted to a net negative change of $700 to the original order and an installation date was set. Prior to the installation date, we called to ensure the amendment and everything was in order, no one called back. Three separate messages were left, as the installation date approached, and no one returned our call. Finally, I called and got a hold of the area Vice President who ensured me that the amendment was processed and all was good. On the installation date, the crew showed up and, low and behold, they had no record of the amendment and needed to make arrangements to adjust the work order. I thought I was done with Long Fence until their billing department started calling asking for the original amount (pre-amendment). After sending them yet another copy of the amendment, I hope this situation is resolved. This is a real shame as their workmen did a great job. It's silly how the inability of their staff to file a 1 page amendment has led to this situation. I just thank God I kept a copy. read more

I hired Long fencing to install a backyard fence. Everything went well with the contract and pricing but the install and follow up has been a nightmare and still going on. This was back in September 2020 and I have had a couple of people come out then and check the issues but never fix them. They sent 2 installers and somehow they didn't align the back fence correctly. One of the gates opens incorrectly. I also had issues with their crew. I went out there to check on the back fence post and found empty beer cans and called the company to complain. I was told that a new crew would be sent out to complete the job. Low and behold they sent the same crew. I firmly told the crew there would be no drinking on my property especially while using power tools. The crew member looked at me and said WHY? I would not recommend this company for any work. I have called and called for months to get my issues resolved and nothing. read more

I had long fence come out to install a new patio and from day one I had to fight with them over every single thing they did starting from the price they quoted and what they said would be done, but then when they started the job they tried to change it and ask for more money. I didn't know when they were starting the job, who would be supervising the job, and when they would finish. I tried working through Frank and Bob and got so frustrated by them jerking me around I finally went to the head boss, who is Mike and he eventually stepped in after threatening them with small claims court. Fast for ward 2 years later and the patio is falling apart. Yes, I was given a 1 year warranty, but I didn't know anything until recently. I had a "sales" guy come out to give me an estimate on what it would take to repair the patio which should NOT be falling apart at this point, but he quoted $3900 to repair the patio. This is ridiculous when I already paid close to $10,000 for them to install the patio. When asked about who quoted the repair work, the sales guy said management. Figures - just another way in which they are trying to take advantage of me when they should do the right thing and fix the patio that should not be falling apart not even 2 years later. I'm willing to pay for some of it, but $3900 is taking advantage of the situation. I would not use them! read more

I would definitely shop around before using this company for a new fence. It took about 9 weeks to get our fence installed due to the wrong size gates being sent. Also they installed half of our post caps in a different color. Their installers are very poorly trained and seem incapable of installing two simple gates correctly. read more

I went with Long Fence because it is a name I am familiar with and I see their signs in my neighborhood. Big Mistake!!! It has been less than a year and the gate to the driveway is non-functional. One gate door is severely sagging and the other has come off the post. To add insult to injury, it will be almost a month and a half before someone will come to fix. Our deck needed to be repaired. We contacted 3 local companies. Long Fence (Ijamsville, Md) was the only company willing to come to the house, examine the deck and discuss solutions with us. Their Sales Associate was knowledgeable, professional and really listened to us. He helped us with determining a repair solution, financing, reminded us of the discount coupon available to us and we signed with Long Fence. The installation crew did all the work in one day! They took a real pride in their craft, did excellent work, and went above what we expected. When they examined the deck joists, they replaced all of them. We were so surprised and pleased that they cared enough about their work to do that. We now have a wonderful repaired deck that we look forward to enjoying for many years. I scheduled an appointment for estimates on several jobs. Since the estimator was to call me before arriving at my house (between 10:00 a.m.-12:00p.m.), I gave the scheduler both my home phone and cell phone numbers, and recommended that the estimator use the cell number to call me since there was a good chance I would not be in my house. He did not call on either phone, but just dropped his business card at my door, probably while I was working in my back yard. I guess Long Fence really didn't want my business, so I'll go elsewhere. read more

They gave us a quote that was cheaper than competitors and the sales representative told us the fence would be installed before July 1. We have been waiting now for three weeks to find out when our fence will be installed, and still no word from Long Fence. Found Long's quote to be expensive, but I felt they could do a nice job for me - when I said I wanted to go with a nice yet small fence, I did feel confidence in this company (based on the conversations with the estimator). A day or two after I received the estimate, I was walking in my yard and realized our design did not provide me a place to easily get my lawnmower thru. They had to send another estimator to my house, and redraw the plan to include an additional gate (and an upward $$ revision). Within a couple of days I needed to call them again, so I went to their website to get the phone number. On the front page was big banner that said '$400 off any fencing job over 'x' dollars', which mine was. I called and asked for the discount, and wanted to know why they did not tell me this discount when they came to my house. They said the discount was only for people who found the ad on the site; I told them that I found the ad, and since the work had not even been scheduled yet, that I felt I should get the discount. They said 'no', I went to a supervisor, and then they said 'yes' to the discount. The installers did a fine job, it looks nice, However, one closing latch isn't lined-up quite right, and on one of the gates they seem to have forgotten a pull-handle, or else it's installed on the wrong side. These are not huge issues, but 1) there should not be issues, 2) they gave me no after-care instructions like 'you should stain it' or 'you should apply ..... to the fence annually, and 3) at no point whatsoever did anyone ever call and ask 'Is everything OK?'. I paid a large amount of money for such a small-ish fence job (which does look nice; they can do nice work) and I expected far, far better customer service - and no shenanigans regarding discounts posted on their website. I needed a new fence built for a townhouse backyard. I didn't have time to comparison shop so I went with Long Fence because it's a name I know and I thought I could count on a decent job. They were quick to respond to give an estimate and I signed the contract and put down a deposit that day. After that it took multiple emails and phone calls to actually have them install the fence (it finally happened nearly 3 months later). When I came home the night of installation, I saw all the boards were covered with black marks (see photo). I was surprised Long Fence would install boards that looked like this but I thought it was just dirt. Also, one board was warped and not nailed in probably so it sat away from the fence. Again, it took multiple emails to get them out to replace the warped board. Now, after 3 months of heavy rain and trying to wash off the "dirt" I have come to the conclusion that the black marks on all the boards may actually be mold. The fact that Long Fence thought installing boards that look like this is acceptable, is unbelievable. I will not be using them for my future projects and will not recommend them. read more

Would give 0 stars if possible. Quote and design process went fine but actual construction and customer service afterwards has been TERRIBLE! Go elsewhere even if it means spending a few extra $$. Workers show little care when working on property, and leave loose or discarded nails all over the place. Not good for dogs. After approx 8 months, the two long sides (we live in townhouse) of the fence have been leaning significantly. We have now been trying for the last 5 months to get them to fix it. After a strenuous follow up process the first time, Janie (customer service rep) said that workers had been out to fix our issue. It was only until after i sent pictures showing the leaning fence, did they send someone out again. I specifically asked to be notified both times when someone would be coming to fix because of their terrible work processing system and incompetent staff. Now the first time someone finally came, they replaced several of the top boards...? This i can tell because the wood is fresh. That was not the issue?! Here we go with round three and into month 6 of bringing our fence back up to spec. Avoid at all costs! This company does not stand behind their product/service one bit!! read more

I called back at the end of March for an appointment to have someone come out and give me an estimate for a front railing replacement. The appointment was scheduled for Saturday, June 13th. Saturday came and went and no one ever should up. Apparently, the company had my wife's cell phone number (I am sure I gave them mine). She said they had tried to call her and an individual by the name of Noah sent her a text message about discussing moving forward with a previous estimate that we had for a fence for the back yard. There was no mention of the front railing replacement scheduled appointment. When I called back to the "866" number the following Monday, I was told that the representative would contact the estimator and would call me back. When he called back, he left a message that the representative tried to contact (my wife) and had left the message about the back yard fence. Nothing about the scheduled appointment. I was told I would have to reschedule. When I called back to reschedule, I was told the next available appointment was over a month away. I told the individual not to bother. I will "never" use Long Fence for any work and will not recommend them to neighbors. Terrible response on appointments. read more

My sales rep, Jason, was excellent and pleasant to deal with. Once things were handed over to the manufacturing/installation team, it didn't go so well. The installers came to install the gate, but only two men were sent to lift extremely heavy gate leaves off of a truck overhead rack. If I hadn't been there to observe, I wouldn't have seen them drop the leaf from 8 ft high, and may not have noticed that they simply were spray painting the deep scores in the powder coat that my gravel driveway left on the leaves. Fortunately, I was there when it happened, so I called Don (PM), who agreed it needed to be recoated. The installers weren't pleased and told me that "they weren't going to be able to put it back on the truck," to which I responded, "you should have had more help." After the gate came back from the coaters the 2nd time, it still had marks and scores from the previous fall, but at least it was powder coated. Additionally, the sales rep had promised that a mounting plate would come installed on the gate leaf from the manufacturer, since I am mounting operator arms myself, the same make/model that Long Fence would've installed, so all specs were known. Don called me about a week out from the 2nd installation, and told me that they couldn't do this. I showed him my contract, so he agreed to have the fabricators do it, but then still called back a few days later, saying that I should just use the install kit mounting bracket and do it myself. This is not what I had agreed to in the contract, but at this point, I was tired of dealing with Long Fence, so I agreed to have the gate simply installed as-is. ABSOLUTELY NIGHTMARE! UNPROFESSIONAL AND INCOMPETENT CREW! Long Fence installed our fence in 2012. Shortly thereafter 3 posts buckled, leading to a full section of fencing that leaned. Being the procrastinators we are, we didn't call for a repair until we needed the gate turned to meet code for a pool we recently installed. The initial estimate was $900 and we were told someone would call to schedule repairs within 2 weeks. 3 weeks later I receive a rude email (no phone calls) from the scheduling coordinator stating that I was unreachable on the # on file and my VM box was full (none of that was true - no missed calls and no VM) and that they attempted to send a crew to my home unannounced but the gate was locked. Yes, the gate was locked because they showed up unannounced in the middle of the work day. After several calls I was told someone would get back to me to get me scheduled. Once again, with no call, someone shows up unannounced, calls me and tells me he's at my house and no one is there...once again, because they showed up unannounced in the middle of the day. At this point, they were able to make the necessary repairs, or so we thought. Instead, they left a gate that was "repaired" but you had to force closed and wouldn't lock. They came back out to fix the gate properly, but the leaning section of fencing is still leaning. In summary, 2 months, 4 repair attempts, numerous calls to the regional manager, $900...and we still have a fence that leans. I would NEVER recommend this company to a friend. read more

When we moved into our historic home, only two sides of the yard were fenced. We were concerned with being able to match the new fence with the existing fence to enclose the space. Our sales rep, Matt Fridley, did a great job of researching our options and keeping us informed as progress was made. He went the extra mile to help ensure the final product would meet our expectations. Michael Smith, Robert Phillips and Mike (the Field Supervisor) were also instrumental in ensuring our experience was a positive one. The installation crew arrived promptly and worked efficiently during the installation. They made quick progress of setting the panels and were meticulous when it came to alignment. While I admit that I'm very particular, this crew exceeded my expectations. We had a couple of existing gates that didn't function properly, but were not part of the initial scope of this project; the crew fixed those gates for us as well. The (Piedmont) fence is absolutely beautiful and even while work was still underway, we were already receiving complements from the neighbors who passed by. I highly recommend Long Fence (Ijamsville, MD). The experience and the finished project are 5 star! read more

I contracted Long Fence and Decks to build a small deck, Long subcontracted another contractor to build the deck, I must say we've had the deck a little over a year it was beautiful and already the wood has begun to crack and split. looking very unsightly I contacted Long Fence, an inspector was sent out he was also the deck builder , told my husband and I the splitting /cracking of the wood was natural. We told Long and the builder, we didn't pay that much money for split /cracked wood. We would like to know what's going to happen within the next 10years read more

I contacted with Long Fence to build a 300 ft2 deck and a small fence for around my garbage and recycling cans near the end of March 2014. All was agreed to for one price and all was written out on one contract. The salesmen promised the world as most do. I was unaware that Long Fence generally uses subcontractors to perform most of their work. I was concerned about quality, timelines and communications off the bat but the salesman said their contractors are exclusive with Long Fence and that would not be an issue. The work was promised to be complete in 4 to 6 weeks depending on permit issues and weather. The salesman sent along deck plans for me to review and okay. We made several changes due to my wants building permit issues. This all went well. The first 1/3 of the agreed price was due immediately as a deposit. The second 1/3 due when the material arrived at my house and the final 1/3 when work was satisfactorily completed. I made the initial deposit, payment. The subcontractor arrived near mid-April and began work. In speaking with the supervisor I learned that they were not exclusive with Long Fence (LF). He in fact ran his own business and only performed work for LF some of the time. So, either the sales man didn't know what he was talking about or lied to my face. I made the second payment as agreed to. When the contractor started building the deck I noticed it was not being completed as was shown on the final plans in which the salesman and I agreed. The contractor was working from the first set up prints we had changed a few times. The contractor said LF would have to resubmit plan which would cause a delay. I decided not to do so; however, the contractor agreed to adjust their work to fit what I thought I was getting. This meant some rework for them. It was obvious that LF and the sub had very poor communication. I consider myself lucky to have been around when the work was being completed. Had I not I would not have had the deck we agreed to. Not only from the plan issues but because the railing would have been substituted with something I did not want and the railing design would have been all wrong and the deck posts would have all been in the wrong spots. So, I had to act as the general contractor for my own work which I paid LF good money to do. I reviewed the final work with the sub and all looked good initially. However, after spending some time on the deck I noticed may of the balusters were cut way to short allow the plug which holds the balusters in place to show. One baluster actually fell out. I called LF several times to get this corrected. It took several times until I got a hold of the installation manager (IM). This office was notorious for not returning my calls. The IM agreed to stop out and have a look. When he did he agreed to have the balusters replaced. When done I was happy with the final product. This was near the end of June. Nearly, that same afternoon or the next the LF called to collect their final payment. But, they never installed the fence we agreed to. They said they would have to look into this as they were not aware of the fence. Mind you it's spelled out on the contract. I didn't hear back for a couple of weeks. When I did it was a called about collecting the final payment. I again said, what about my fence? I said I was not going to make the final payment until the fence was in place. Again, I was told they would have to look into it. A few days go by and the IM agrees to stop out and review the work. He did and marked out where the fence should go. A few days later another sub shows up to instal the fence. The sub never came to the door for me to review the work. He left without me knowing. Given it was a small fence I was not too worried about it. Until, that is, I had a look at it. This was a small 4' x 6', 3 sided fence up against my house. You couldn't find a square corner on this fence to save your life. It looked horrible! I called to have this repaired twice but never received a call back. Finally, I gave up and fixed it myself. Then I soon received a call about making the final payment. Thankful to have to have LF out of my life I made the final payment, provided my CC info by phone. This was August 2014. Then in mid-December 2014 I get two voice mails on the same day, one from an office admin and one from the IM seeking the final payment and sounding annoyed that I didn't make it. I checked my CC statement and saw that they never charged my CC as I authorized. I called the first person back a day later and left her a message to call me back, mentioned that we did this already but since LF didn't charge my card I was happy to make the payment, again. I never received a call back (see a pattern!?). Anyway, I felt the ball was in their court at this point. A week or two later I received a letter from an attorney they hired to collect the final payment. I would not hire this company to build me a sandcastle. Stay away! read more
