Very hard too find good Chinese on long island. I been to so many and this is the place I keep returning too. Whats nice is they are the last place to make their own noodles. Everyone else has them pre packaged. No 5 stars though...I found a washer in my lo mein. Why are there so many BAD Chinese food restaurants on Long Island? Finally - Long River - I have finally found you. Long River definitely prepares above average Chinese food...although they also have sushi (which is new item on their menu - used to be purely Chinese) and other "fusion" items. The sesame chicken is HUGE and delicious- it is not drowning in sauce and has just the right amount of sweetness. The soups: yummmm. The classics: Wonton is very good / you get a lot of wontons not just broth in your pint. Egg drop is ehhhhh/average and a little bit too watery. The inside looks beautiful as well - I haven't eaten in yet but based on the food - will be soon. Overall, above average Chinese food in the area. read more

This used to be the locals go to spot. For years now, they seem to slide further & further into obscurity. They pile empty cardboard boxes to load take outs in, right out in the open. It looks unkept & messy. The food is average at best. There's nothing that stands out to me about this place. Not the food, not the service, not the people. I got some takeout from here last week and ate it in my car somewhere else. I got pan-fried wontons in garlic sauce and curry chicken. I found the wontons to be only fair, they were so large they almost wouldn't fit in my mouth and tasted just okay. I sometimes get the same dish at Food Luck (closer to me) and they make it better. As for the curry chicken, it had a pleasant taste with just the right amount of curry, but it was too watery and, due to that, was difficult to eat without creating a mess. This restaurant is up the block from my job. I usually don't venture from my usual spots (although, the one's by me are nothing to rave abt). Anyway, I usually only get the china town wonton soup from this place, which is always good ( as recommended by a fellow yelper). But today I ordered a dinner special. Don't ask me why.... felt adventurous and "dangerous." First off it took them over an hour to deliver my food and I'm literally up the block from them by the hospital. I did call to cancel my order due to how long it was taking (apparently they couldn't find my job, note that I have ordered my usual soup from them on multiple occasions for delivery with no problemo). IDK, maybe they got a new driver, whatever. after I cancelled the food order the driver showed up abt and 1hr and 20min after I first ordered, huh? I was starving and the kitchen at my job was now closed. So I argued with the driver about length of delivery time and if food is not hot That I'm not taking it. Food was warm so I took it. Big mistake, I should have known after all the bad omens that happened I should have refused the food. The rice was like mush, I have never tasted rice like that in all my years. completely inedible, The egg foo young (main dish) was decent. They also forgot my egg roll with my meal, But as I figure I'm saving money by letting the egg roll go and not to order any more food from them to get the egg roll back. I do have to say throughout the multiple calls back and forth abt all the issues I s/w a young lady and young man, I believe Marcus was his name. I was not very nice abt the issues but both of them never waivered and they were both pleasant and nice even with my stanky attitude. I just got Chicken & Broccoli and Boneless Spare Ribs. The Chicken & Broccoli had very little chicken and the sauce wasn't the typical sauce that other Chinese food places serve. It had very little flavor. The Boneless Spare Ribs were dry and the sauce had no taste. And there was a puddle of oil on the bottom of the container. I've had this at many other Chinese takeout places and this was by far the worst I ever had. I've been going to Long River off and on for over 25 years and for the past 10 years they always seem to disappoint. The sit down restaurant part is better than the takeout here. We were weekly customers until we found a strand of metal in our food. I actually thought I bit into something weird and possibly think I may have swallowed a very small piece. My wife the next day noticed a larger strand in her meal. She called the owner to let them know and they acknowledged it came from the brush used to clean the wok, seems to be a common occurrence since they knew exactly what it was. Been eating here since I was little. By far best Chinese in west islip if not all the surrounding area. Moved to dix hills still go there when i order Chinese. Never has any mistakes and can be picky on what you want in your food. No place compares. Now with their sushi and other items on the menu it's a great place for everyone to be happy. Haven't dinned in the restaurant although I've seen it and its very nice clean and modern. Would recommend to anyone read more

I order every Saturday for dinner. My bill is never below $25.00 I have been a loyal customer for yrs. Last weekend I ordered steamed dumplings and here was a small piece of metal on the top of one of the dumplings. I called to inform them, and I spoke to Cindy ( I believe she is related to the owner). She apologized and told me, she know exactly what it was. She informed me that it was a bristle from the brush they use to clean the wok. Apparently, this has been a problem before. She told me she would credit my entire bill and next time I order- just ell them I have a credit. I ordered my usual Saturday dinner- I had someone else pick it up for me. When they had to pay the bill, they were told my credit was only for the dumplings. He didn't know any better so he paid the bill and brought the food to me. When he told me the story- I immediately called Long River. I explained my story to them. They asked me to please hold on for a minute. They returned to the phone to tell me that they called Cindy on the other line & she told them, that she told me last week- she would give a credit just for the dumplings. (which was not the truth). She told me she would refund the entire bill. I have been a long standing customer but apparently that doesn't mater to them. I will not be ordering from them again., I will not patronize this establishment, again. . So, please check your food- for any small metal objects- because to seems not to be a big deal for them. Never again, i have been to this place twice. The first time was average at best, but since people I know said to give it another chance, I did. I ordered via their on line service and put on the order to pick it up when i got off my train. I got there they had no idea about it, then a girl found it and was totally flustered. She said it would be about 10-15 minutes, obviously they lost or forgot about it, ok, fine, it happens. After 5 minutes they say it's done. how does it get done in 5 minutes? THEY DON'T COOK IT! I have been eating at Long River since I was a child , as I grew up in West Islip. It was always the best until recent years. My most recent experience was awful. It took over an hour for my food to be delivered, when it came it was cold, the fried and another app I had ordered not only looked and tasted old but the other app tasted down right rancid. i will not be ordering from this restaurant ever again and that saddens me because they were always one of my favorites.. I should have known when I walked in the place and there was one other patron in the whole restaurant. I made a mistake. The special rolls had more sauce slopped on top than sushi and they even messed up my order and the waiter told me I was wrong. I didn't ask for my dish the way they served it. I didn't touch my food. The salad came out and they gave us a little cup of dressing to split. We had to explain that we wanted dressing for each of our salads not split a serving. My fiancé who is very easy going ate his and threw up 3 times on the way home, guess he should have listened to me when we couldn't figure out what was in the roll with all the 3 different sauces covering them. after he got annoyed with me for not wanting to eat my sushi that wasn't what I ordered. I've never seen so much sauce slopped on a sushi roll in my life. They make it like the prices are cheaper but there not. They put more seaweed wrap than sushi in my roll. Rude service. I wanted to try a new place and learned my lesson the heard way. They don't even listen to what you order they just served me a dish and told me I'm wrong. I go for sushi 4 times a week. Masa or kotobuki or fancy lee is much better same price better quality. They cut every corner including having to ask for sauce for two people because they think a dipping bowl of salad dressing can be split between two people. You have to ask for chop sticks. You have to ask for everything. Even when ordering an ice tea they make it a point to hint that you're going to be charged for refill. Anyway no matter the price. The service is horrible penny pinchers and pretend to not hear you when you order to make the most profit. Special rolls are gross and sushi is horrible. Go to an all you can eat before this place. Same quality and you actually can get what you Want and I'm not a buffet person. I can deal with rude service but horrible food and bad service is a major turn off. Save you're time eat in or fast food at least you might not puke it up. Glad I didn't eat it. I took one bite and left all the leftovers there and didn't look back. What a waste of time. Gross food. I went here for father's day weekend with the family . Great place. We dined in this party room away from the rest of the diners. We ordered a combination of sushi and Chinese food. My family doesn't eat raw sushi so we ordered the new Earthquake roll and West Islip roll...delicious! Chinese food was great too. The staff was very friendly and attentive.
