We got the general Tso's chicken and vegetable lo mein. The chicken was very nice, but the sauce was a bit runny for our taste and could have had a bit more of a kick to it. I don't get to Bloomington often, but when I do, I always fit Longfei into the schedule. The cabbage with crab roe is a must. Anything from the griddle is delicious. The menu is animal protein heavy, and they are flexible about making dishes vegetarian upon request. The authentic Chinese menu has interesting alternatives to your average Chinese meal. When I was a student, Longfei's location was formerly the Snow Lion, a Tibetan restaurant with familial connections to the Dalai Lama. Now it's a fairly authentic Chinese restaurant...I'll leave you to ponder that turn of events. Focusing on the present, we were pleasantly surprised that Longfei offered one of the more diverse Chinese menus in Bloomington. Our eyes lit up when we saw "Lamb with cumin" on the menu, our current favorite Chinese dish. The cumin lamb stir-fry had an excellent, complex savory flavor, with chunks of lamb, green pepper, onion, chiles, and a lot of cumin seed. The lamb pieces were more difficult to eat at Longfei, than the usual lamb shoulder we've seen in past cumin lamb recipes, since the bones were still attached. We also ordered standard steamed pork dumplings and a nicely flavored mapo tofu with pork. The menu also offered hot pot, spicy beef tendon, and various offal-based dishes, for those more adventurous eaters. For those with timid tastebuds, no worries...options like orange chicken and beef with broccoli were also present. The interior appeared updated from my college days, and our server was very friendly (and appeared to be the owner). We'd definitely keep Longfei in mind when visiting Bloomington again...especially for its stir-fried lamb with cumin. read more

Tried this place for dinner for the first time with a friend. Ordered the spicy fish filet pieces with tofu, winter melon stir fry with egg, beef pan fried buns, and green onion pancake. What's hot - Flavor. Awesome! Totally authentic. The fish filet with tofu dish had an awesome sauce. We ordered medium spicy, which was great. You feel the kick shortly afterwards and it's not overwhelming. There were chunks of garlic, which added to it. Their green onion pancake wasn't greasy. Just right. - Portions. They cater to a decent college crowd, who want good portions for their money. You get great size portions. Be prepared not to finish, unless you come with a large group. - Chinese menu. The mark of a good Chinese restaurant is when they have menu options written in Chinese. The owner was also helpful in talking us through some of these options, cuz they're new. - Service. The owner is from China and speaks some English. I bring this up so you know he can answer your questions if you don't speak Chinese. He was super friendly and helpful to me and my friend. He was nice and helpful to all customers. - Price. Some dishes cost more, but that's based on ingredients. For example, the seafood dishes may be around $15, but that's to be expected. The cost is not unreasonable. Portion size is also worth it. What's not - Location. It's tucked away on the side of the block. It's not noticeable right away, but it's you can still find it. Honestly the worst dining experience I've ever had. My first impression was an employee walking out of the kitchen while scratching his butt. My order was 45 minutes late from the expected time it would be done, and when I came to pick it up an employee laughed at me for complaining. When I picked it up I was told I was getting a 10% discount for my troubles, however I did not receive a discount. To further the disappointment, after getting my order, the order was wrong.
