We were in Austin for a wedding and had some time on our hands . I thought this would appeal to my husband much more than the river walk area in San Antonio. It's about an hour and a half ride through flat, mostly undeveloped landscaping. The mandatory guided tours are on the hour, so you might want to try to time it right. They have a very small gift shop area and even smaller snack bar. If you have kids you might want to be sure to bring snacks. You'll be walking on the tour for 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your guide and how many questions your husband asks. There are NO restrooms in the cave, so plan ahead. Also it is cold in the caves............we went on a beautiful sunny January day, but I'm very glad I wore my heavy sweater. As mentioned winter is a slow season. So you may get lucky have only 6-10 people altogether. I do recommend this for people who have an interest in nature, geology, and history and such. read more

We drove out from Austin last Saturday and had a great time! I don't know if it was just dumb luck on our part with the timing we picked for our tour or if it was because of the weather- but we maybe had 6 other people in our group. As we were leaving the cave the groups were significantly larger. So definitely go on a drizzly/cloudy day or before 1. Anyways, back to the Cavern. It was beautiful!! Our tour guide Robert was fabulous he had a great sense of humor and you could tell he was very passionate about telling us about the cavern. At the park there is also a guest house of sorts you can walk through that's been there since the early 1900s I believe with pictures and history. That in itself was cool to walk around. There's also a nature trial that we opted out this time, but would love to walk in the spring. There's also, of course, the traditional little gift shop and little cafe. The drive out there itself was pretty and like I said we had a great time! We will definitely be back. read more

I came here about a month ago during my trip to Austin and I was blown away. We ubered out (about an hour and a half from downtown Austin) and we went on the cave tour. Very informative and very cool! Definitely a must see. What really blew me away though is the people that work here. When we tried to catch an uber back to Austin, our app was telling us we were out of range. The great people working there helped us find a cab company, and we called a few places but none would come out to get us (unless we wanted to wait 3 hours and pay $400). These incredible people called one of the rangers (Evan, an absolute angel) who drove us to the nearest town so we could catch an uber. People of Longhorn, you are INCREDIBLE. Our tour guide was Jim. He did a great job explaining the history of the caves, the different rock formations and minerals. Very knowledgeable and funny guy. This was my second time taking the tour and you alway learn and see something new. A wonderful experience. I love caves!!! Why did I wait so long to come back??? Last time I was here was 1991. I am going to add some pictures. It has a great story and great history. It also has a cute gift shop where you can but minerals etc. The cavern has bats and they were in abundance when I was there, some flying about. Please follow directions, and respect this park and the cave. The crystal area was amazing and I hope my pics do it justice. It is closed on most major holidays. It is about an hour to 1 1/2 hour tour. There is also another tour you can take and you have to bring your own helmet and it goes about 15-20 feet below the main tour, but we went on the general tour. This review is just for the cavern tour. I was camping nearby at Inks Lake and it was raining lost of the day so we thought a cave tour would be good since it would get us out of the rain. We had over 30 people in our group and at least 8 were children 18 months to 10 years old. I have two kids and love doing things outdoors but many times it was difficult to hear our tour guide because of screaming or simply others talking. Because of the size of our group we were pretty spread in the narrow parts which also makes it hard to hear. Our guide didn't seem excited or enthusiastic about what she was saying. She spoke in a monotone voice so maybe if she was just louder we would've heard her. The cavern was beautiful and a perfect 68 degrees. Maybe if we had a different tour guide and a smaller group it would've been better. Two other guides passed us on the tour and they had people in their group smiling and laughing. I had just an ok time but I'm sure it could've been a lot better. Oh, and with our state parks pass we were able to save 20%! read more

We greatly enjoyed the cavern. Guide was rather annoying and spoke to the group in a sing songy way and if we were a kindergarten class. She seemed to have little patience for the kids in the group. About half way through, I was ready to be done. I don't take to a 20 something speaking to adults in such a way. Everyone was quiet and following the rules so it was obnoxious. She brought up tipping several times but by the time we were done, that wasn't happening. I believe her name was Amanda or something close to that. read more

We came from kyle and it took us an hour and a half ride to get there. What a great day! Not only is the cave fantastic but the tour was very fun and informative! On our tour we saw several bats, mice and a scorpion (which is rare). The tour is 90 mins and if you are tall expect some ducking under low ceilings. They also have special tours for the adventurous and photo tours for the creative. We packed a lunch and ate at a picnic table. Loved it! read more

This is a unique park in a lot of ways. There's no camping on site, but given how close it is to Inks Lake, you could definitely camp in the area. I only stopped for half an hour or so to check out the park and use the bathroom on the way home from Inks, but I'm definitely looking forward to going back. The old park headquarters building at the entrance is really cool to see, and the one that is still operating is fairly nice and has food if you're in a pinch. The coolest thing, and the whole point in going, is of course the cave. We were only allowed to go to the cave entrance since you need a tour guide to enter, but that was still worth stopping for. You don't have to pay to walk around the grounds and the cave entrance is still down in a huge grotto that is pretty cool to behold. I wouldn't have driven out of my way to see the grotto, but since we were just passing by, it was a lot of fun to stop for. If you want to venture into the cave, you have to sign up for a guided tour. The tour lasts an hour and a half and takes you a little over a mile--info I got from one of the park rangers. I definitely want to make a stop here again when it's convenient to take a tour of the cave. Could be a fun stop on a day trip given how close it is to other fun areas. Definitely not a day long adventure, but you can send a few hours here if you brought a lunch as well. Plenty of places to picnic. I'm going back for sure. read more

I'm a fan of caves and this specific cave tour was very fun. The cave had the most adorable little bats (which our tour guide, Avery, called Cave Chicken Nuggets). The formations were beautiful and the walking itself was not too physically draining at all. A must-see if you're ever in the Lake Buchanan area. Our guide, "Mad Crash" was pretty awesome. He knew every inch of the caverns. He had great stories and made it entertaining and educational. You spend 90 minutes in the caverns and walk about 1 mile in total. The cave walls are beautiful with lots of history. read more

Really enjoyed the tour of the cave and the time we spent there. Our tour guide Mark was great. He was very informative and keep it interesting the entire time. The cave itself was an awesome place and all the history since it's discovery is very cool. The little bats that live in the cave were a highlight for us and we got to see several very close up without disturbing them, very cool!! This was a little day trip to spend some time with grandson on his birthday, which made it even more special and rememberable. Wow! I wasn't expecting to love this place. I recently went for the first time with out of town visitors. Access to the park grounds, including the hiking trails, picnic area, and historic CCC buildings is free. You can only visit the cavern with a tour guide. You can purchase tickets within the gift shop. The price for adults is $17.50. View their web page for tour hours. They typically occur at the top of every hour while they are open. The tour is worth it. The cavern was created by drip and shift activity. The majority of the cave was created by the dissolving and cutting action of water on the limestone bedrock. The cavern is uniquely beautiful. The hall of diamonds will take your breath away. After your cavern tour enjoy a hike on one of the trails surrounding the park. The trails provide a good glimpse for out of town guests of the natural beauty of the Texas hill country. Also, check out the CCC historic observation tower. Very interesting tour, our guide seemed well informed, didnt stumble of any questions, so if she didnt know what was going on, I couldn't tell. As far as my experience if you're expecting to get out of the heat, this isn't the best thing to do. It was cooler down there, but very humid, so it wasnt a great escape from heat, but obviously a good escape from the sun. Nice little gift shop, very friendly people. There is great wildlife to see. Overall I would recommend doing this at least once. read more
