We did the wild cave tour and it took about 3 hours. Matthew was our tour guide and he was excellent. It was definitely super adventurous and fun! We got really dirty and enjoyed checking everything out. If you are claustrophobic in any way do the walking tour and not the wild cave tour - and wear the long sleeved shirt and pants they say too, because you will be super muddy by the end of the tour! I would definitely recommend this to my more adventurous friends. read more

When you are married to a Texan, there are times when your Texan will need to reconnect with nature. Longhorn Cavern State Park is a good place to begin. The particulars are that this park belongs to the State of Texas but it is run by a private company. This allows them to have private special events here (concerts, weddings, private events, even a cave rave a few years ago). We actually went out there to do some hiking. We were not able to go off any of the trails because I made the mistake of leaving my hiking shoes on the kitchen table, and my flip-flops would only do so much. However, I will tell you that the main trails are so easy to do (I did them in flip-flops) that you can easily bring children here. You can bring your dog, on a leash, but not to the cave tour. Also, we did not see a single other person on the hiking trails because apparently most people come only to do the cave tours. But we did see other evidence of people (the occasional cigarette butt, or dog poo), who I'm sure were not Yelpers because Yelpers would never be so disrespectful as to destroy the beauty of a place for those that come behind them. The trails are well marked and quite shady from the trees. Unfortunately, you will see the damage that last year's drought caused. There are many dead trees in some areas. There are several trail choices, but the longest is about 1.5 miles, so it is an easy hike. After your hike, you can bring a picnic lunch and enjoy it with the family at one of their many, well-shaded picnic tables. If you forgot your lunch, it's okay. They have a cafeteria with hamburgers and such, and drinks, and ice cream. So grab something and head on out to the picnic tables. Because we were out there, we decided to do the cave tour. It is about 1.5 miles, round-trip, and takes about 90 minutes to complete. It costs $12.99 per adult. And, the tours are not as crowded as those at Natural Bridge Caverns. Unlike, Natural Bridge Caverns, these caves were formed through erosion caused by an underground river, so you will not see the stalagmites and stalactites that you would see there. But you will see different rock formations that are not present in other caves. The cave tour is pretty easy to do in flip-flops, as long as it has not rained recently. If it has, then you will get mud between your toes. You will need to duck in several spots and walk crouched for several parts, but that's part of the fun. Plus this tour has fewer people than other places, so you may enjoy it more. Also, the temperature in this cave is 68, so even with the humidity, the cave temperature is about mid 70s. I was very comfortable. No sweating involved. They also offer a special tour for the more adventurous. It requires you to wear a hard hat with a light because this part of the cave is not developed, nor is it lit. It also requires you to wear knee pad, elbow pads and wear long pants. You can bring your own equipment or rent theirs. This tours costs significantly more ($45). We were not able to do it because they only do one per day. So if you want to do this tour, call and make reservations. They only offer this tour on Saturdays, unless you book a private tour (for you and your 5 closest friends), in which case you get to pick any day you want. All in all, I much preferred Longhorn Cavern to Natural Bridge Cavern. It has pluses and minuses, but it was a good day. read more

My family really enjoyed our visit here. Our tour guide was a retired teacher. He did really well telling us the history of the cave and about the types of rocks and minerals in the caves. My 7 year old daughters were the only kids on the tour so he pointed things out specifically to them so it kept their attention. We all had a good time, everyone was very considerate and nice. I was visiting Austin and had time to kill on a Friday afternoon, so my friend told me to check this place out. I'm glad I did. State park road 4 that leads to the park was absolutely breathtaking, with rolling hills and April wildflowers. The road leads you to the administration office where you can buy tickets to the cave tours, and there is ample parking in front and in an adjacent lot. You can also buy tickets online. I took the daily tour (offered at 11, 1, and 3 from Labor Day to Memorial Day and hourly during the summer) on a Friday afternoon. There were about 20 people in my group, mostly couples and families with kids, but a few solo adventurers like myself. The daily tour was $16 (for adults) and lasted about 1.5 hours. The whole trip is about a mile and a half (.75 into the cavern and you turn around and come back). I had a great experience. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and could easily and happily answer questions from both curious kids and their engineer parents. We stopped several points in the journey to learn all about the structures of the cavern and the science behind its creation, as well as some Texas history. I thought the ticket was well worth the price, but I really enjoy science and history. And caves. And bats. There aren't many bats... They are tiny anyway! They also offer tours where you can crawl around in tiny holes and get muddy, but I can't and probably will never be able to speak to that. They also offer paranormal activity tours and other special tours. You can also have a wedding reception or party in the cavern! I would recommend and definitely come back. The only thing I would warn against is bringing very small children with you. The walk is easy enough, but someone brought a toddler with them and they had a very hard time. The kid was scared, cried the whole time (not ideal acoustics for that), and had a hard time when they were out down to walk. Older kids seemed to have a great time, especially the boys in our group. read more

The caverns themselves should get more than three stars. It's definitely worth experiencing. The drive is beautiful. It will be a fun day. That being said.... Our guide ruined the experience for me and my husband. I'm not a claustrophobic person, but after two hours trapped in the cave with her, my fight or flight (actually just flight) instinct kicked in several times. I find it a problem that I know more about her personal life than I do about the caverns. She mentioned three times that she works for tips, yet not one person tipped her. I hope that will translate into some kind of realization for her. If you have kids and they have a propensity for screaming and crying, please just wait a couple of years to bring them here - the rest of the tour will thank you for it. There was a little boy on our tour who was afraid of the dark (I can't think of a better place to bring a child like that...exposure therapy at it's best) and he expressed his distress through high-pitched shrieking and wailing (off and on, for two hours). read more

The caverns are actually very cool, me and my family went there honestly expecting something small-ish and free but they only allow people to go down there in a tour only. Which is fine but it's $16 per adult, $15 for teenagers 13-19 and for kids it's $12. So a family of 5 turned out to be $70-odd. It was more than we expected to spend but everyone enjoyed the tour and walking through the caves. What I found most awful was the food. On the website they call it a grill so we expected maybe a nice restaurant only to find a very mediocre cafe type. Eating at a bowling alley would have been better food. I've worked in the food industry for close to 10 years and I can tell when a cafe needs a clean not only by looking but also by how the food comes out. My pizza was ok but smelled kind of funny, we also got a hot dog and fries that grossed me out he most. I could tell the fryer oil hadn't been changed in a long time. The fries were brown and the hotdog had little black bits all over it. My boyfriend couldn't eat it. On top of that the food took a long time to prepare and there was someone behind the counter eating food over the work station. It disgusted another customer who made a decision not to get any food just from seeing that alone. I noticed the guy who cooked our food constantly run his hands through his hair too. I mean don't these tx people get food handlers cards? I saw that they were either teenagers or young adults who worked there looking pretty greasy and no hair nets. The place could do with a much better food area for tourists, I'm pretty sure it would bring in more business. So I rate the caverns to be pretty good and worth the trip but do not eat there whatever you do! If I could rate the "grill" it would be -1. read more

Unfortunately, a kid of one of the employees (I assume the boss) came on our Cavern Walking Tour without a parent and really made it unpleasant. Caden (not sure of spelling, a boy of 9 or 10), interrupted our tour guide, climbed all over the rocks we were told not to touch, and removed his mask for most of the tour. The tour guide spent more time policing the kid than they were able to spend telling us about the cave. Caden said that he'd been on this tour many times and the Wild Cave Tour 17 times, so you should hope he's not on yours. read more

Very cool caverns, very interesting history. The tour is about 2 hours long and they leave every hour on the hour. Our group unfortunately had a 4-year-old who desperately needed a nap, so I didn't get to hear everything our guide told us, due to the kid's inconsolable screaming, but I did hear some cool stuff. (Note to parents: Don't bring your cranky children into a cave for 2 hours. That's just cruel. Plus, you'll get the stink-eye. From me.) These caves feature all kinds of rock formations: a pre-historic "dog", Abe Lincoln's profile, a "marble" hall, and Sam Bass's "footprint". I'm claustrophobic, but I had no problem in these caves. I was sorry to see the human toll that these caverns have suffered over the years, but there are still many beautiful features to see and a whole litany of historical anecdotes to learn. Well-worth visiting! Be sure to wear comfortable non-skid shoes. Oh, and after a rain, this place can get really humid, so dress in light layers. read more

Longhorn Caverns was a wonderful experience, well worth the admission fee! Plus, you get to take a really nice drive out though the Hill Country of Texas to get there. Its located about an hour outside of North Austin. So a perfect day trip. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the cavern, the guys who helped excavate it (the Civilian Conservation Corps) and the "speak easy" history of the place. I can only imagine what that must have been like!! The caverns were carved out by glacial water flowing underground. The water and debris cut the pathways. The tour is about a mile and a half in and out. And apparently there are about 2 more miles of cave only accessible to scientists and researchers. So this is quite a unique cave compared to others out there. There are a few stalactites and stalagmites here and there. But mostly you get to see water carved limestone formations. It was really amazing, all the nooks and crannies everywhere. The cave is quite cool and damp. There are many "low bridge" passageways. Folks under 5 foot tall should have no trouble at all. So be prepared to duck your head and even your upper body down several times throughout the tour. The ground seems to be pretty well maintained, with a few uneven surfaces and man-made staircases. Definitely wear good walking shoes and bring a jacket. If you are claustrophobic, you may have a few issues. There are some cramped walk ways, but they often open up to spacious rooms. I did feel a little weird a couple times, but the view of the walls and ceiling are a good distraction. Bring your camera, because there are a ton of photo opportunities. I will definitely go back again! read more

Looking for things to do on a rainy day in Marble Falls, we stumbled across Longhorn Cavern State Park. While not impressed with the entrance fee ($45 for a family of four with a military discount), the tour guide, Leona, was amazing! She was kind, informative, and entertaining. She was brilliant with our two children (ages 5 & 8) and the other children in the large group. The cavern is impressive, but the tour made our day. Make sure to ask for Leona as your tour guide. If you can handle crawling around in the caves, skip the regular your and take the Wild Cave Tour. You get to go in all the areas the normal your doesn't and it a lot of fun. We have gone twice, and our guide Leona is a real hoot. She really knows her stuff, and knows this cavern very well. Definitely way more fun than the standard tour! I wanted to go somewhere that we've never visited before so I picked the Longhorn caverns after reading reviews on Yelp. You have to take a one-lane road that has some pretty steep hills that seem like a roller coaster for a few heart-pounding seconds. The gift shop seems to take up most of the facility, but there is a good selection of souvenirs that would please just about anyone. We got there just an hour after opening so we were able to get the next tour. The cave is quite extensive and well lit, sometimes enough to get some decent pictures. They have a problem with algae by the lights so the tour leader would turn them off after the group passed through each section. It was a big group and some of the stragglers got caught in the dark for a few seconds. Overall, it seemed to be a very-family friendly place, but has enough to interest grown-ups as well. Next time, I would like to try the explorer trip to see other parts of the cave. read more

wasn't quite sure if we should do this one or not: a cave's a cave, right? our guide (cliff, a grandfatherly gentleman), was exceptional. he engaged the kids, kept the adults in line, and had a plethora of knowledge about the cave's history. he was also quite the wit-ster. we did the walking tour (there's a more involved crawling tour) with a group of about thirty that took an hour and a half. fairly easy stuff, although tall people will have to duck a number of times. cave temperature was in the mid-60s, so you'd do well to carry a lightweight jacket if you're cold nature. read more

Our family recently took this incredible tour. First off, it was very beautiful. The 90-100 minute tour was well worth the money. Do note that if your kid is older than 1 - you will pay for them to go on the tour. Our tour guide had just the right personality to make it interesting and keep us moving! There were a lot of areas to take pictures. Also, there is one area that might be difficult for people with claustrophobia. I have issues and it was at my limit. I made it through, but I had to really relax through it. It also helped that I am really short. If you are tall and claustrophobic, you may have issues. All in all, a beautiful place to visit in Texas. read more

This is probably the best cave in the Austin area! I have now been to this cave 3 time in the past year despite the hour long drive to get here. I recently brought 6 of my friends and they loved it. I will say that most of the experience depends on the tour guide you get. The first time I visited was AMAZING and the guide had a lot of enthusiasm. This last time seemed to drag on for almost too long. We even had to sit down at one point. Either way, go and see for yourself! This cave is pretty unique with it's different formation and ultra smooth chambers near the back of the cave that resemble Antelope Canyon! I also reccommend going up their tower! Ask where it is and go all the way up the two spiral staircases because they give you great views of the Hill Country and a pretty large CASSSTTLLLEEE! Yes, there is a nice sized castle off in the distance that's pretty hard to miss. It is the Falkenstein Castle! Also, if you exit the park to the left and follow the blue picnic are signs, not too far down (about 3-5 extra minutes) there is an AWESOME picnic area with an AMAAAZZINNGG view of the Hill Country! Do it!!!! Since they are owned by the state but privately operated, the offer Wild Cave Tours where you're able to go beyond the paths and crawl through tiny spaces. They also offer a Paranormal Tour that takes you through the cave's rich history with Native Americans and early American settlers! read more

Well, I have been to Natural Bridge Caverns, by comparison, I enjoyed NBC better. However, Longhorn isn't so bad. I did the standard tour, the tour guide is pretty funny and we had a good time. I think I want to try the Wild tour, Ghost tour or the concert, they sound pretty interesting. read more

Took a trip to marble falls for the day and my first stop was longhorn cavern. The front desk ladies were very friendly and informative. The tour I went on only had 4 other people and it was very enjoyable especially with misty our tour guide who made the tour very personable.She was very nice and always asked if we had any questions and let us know how great working at the caverns has been and you could tell by her presentation.Misty let us know she does the wild cavern tours that take you into the caverns and I will be definitely coming back soon! Cavern tour $20 per person (tax included) was a nice cool walk underground. Jordan was informative and humorous during the tour which made it a bit more fun. Walk was moderate difficulty in the cave due to uneven floor and moisture but we were not rushed so no problem. Cave was very nice and unique compared to other caves in the area. Park hikes around the cave entrance were short but well-shaded and interesting to take in. Cedar is very thick so if you have allergies bring your Claritin to ensure you can deal with it well. Great day out for the two of us and then we stopped by Marble Falls for dinner before heading back to San Antonio! read more

DO NOT GO IF YOU ARE CONCERNED AT ALL ABOUT COVID. This is a great destination and our tour guide was very well informed. It's great to get out and enjoy the beautiful Texas outdoors. However, although masks are required, a number of people on our tour took theirs off or wore them below their chins once they were out of sight of the visitors center. This was true of several of the other groups we passed. Social distancing is frequently mentioned but is virtually impossible with twenty people in an enclosed space which has no air flow and with a tour timeline that means people need to stick together. read more

Unique cavern. I don't think I've ever done anything at LCSP other than the cavern. The cave is pretty in that it's so plane it's unexpected. I've been in many caves including Outerspace cavern and Carlsbad cavern both of which has much more natural occurring formations. The staff are always nice and it's not too long of a tour to bore little kids. read more

My friend and I went here for the normal tour on the Fourth of July. There were about 26 people on our tour, which I think is about the perfect number. The price of $16 is very reasonable, I think. Our guide, Mark S, was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the cave and was open to any questions we had. He was also very patient with children who kept interrupting him. That being said, please don't bring your child if they're not old enough to be relatively quiet and not touch the cave walls. The acoustics are very good in the cave, and it's annoying to hear children's loud comments throughout the whole tour. And touching the cave walls damages the cave. Other than the annoying children, the tour was very interesting, and I would definitely go back for some of the other tours. read more
