Felt a little out of our comfort zone being this far south in OC, so we wanted something that was a little more familiar. As far as I'm aware, there's no Din Tai Fung in the area, so we settled for Long's Noodles :p Note, I do compare everything with a similar menu to DTF, because I mean, it's DTF. The OG. The restaurant was pretty slow for lunch on a Saturday, but we came late around 1pm. Thus, we were sat right away and got immediate service when needed. Our meal is the basic Din Tai Fung starter pack: Appetizer: the cucumber salad. fresh cucumber chunks with plenty of garlic and just the right amount of pickle. Mains: beef roll, pork chili wontons, and shrimp & pork XLBs. I was a bit hesitant ordering the beef rolls, as some places skimp on basically everything, but Long's Noodles gives a generous portion of meat, veggies, and fried pancake. The XLBs are delicious, there was so much broth in each piece. Honestly, there was more broth in these than the ones I get at DTF. Do with that information what you will. The pork chili wontons were good, but nothing beats DTF's spicy wontons. This was more than enough food for two people, and we ended up taking 3 of the 4 pieces of beef roll home. Overall, we enjoyed our meal, and had no complaints with the food. The staff seemed like they were all family, and it operated kind of like it. Overall - an average experience and food, but could be great. The pictures look better than the flavors to me, if I'm honest. The braised beef noodle soup did have a lot of flavor but beware it is extremely spicy. They did clearly put that on the menu, so that's not on the restaurant; but just know it's VERY spicy. My son and I normally like spicy (vindaloo, jalepeno, sichuan spicy, etc) but we found the noodles way too hot for us. Maybe you'll like it? For the dumplings they look great, but then the shrimp dumplings and the pork Xiao long bao lacked flavor and tasted quite plain. If you are in the San Clemente area and craving a hole-in-the-wall vibe with exceptional eats, check out Long's Noodles! In two days, we visited this location three different times while on vacation to try out a total of 13 dishes split amongst a party of four visit one, and then a party of three visits two and three the following day. That is how impressed we were with the dishes we ordered - we had to come back for more before heading back home to the SGV. Wait...if we are living in the SGV, why would we choose to eat at Long's when some of the best Chinese cuisines from various regions is within spitting distance? Because Long's impressed us that much - keep up! Forget words, I've gone and provided you photo evidence and labeled each of the thirteen dishes. Let me break down the shining stars of what we have tried thus far: #1 - Pan-Fried Pork Buns (or if you fancy shrimp you could pick the Pan-Fried Shrimp & Pork Buns). There is something magical about just pork in these juicy buns; my favorites were from Kang Kang Food Court in Alhambra, until I had these and now I have a new favorite. #2 - Mince Pork with Noodle is the best of the noodle dishes I have tasted thus far from Long's. Fatty, tender cubes of succulent pork with noodles soaking in a sauce (not a soup noodle, so if you are wanting a soupy/brothy noodle this ain't it - try the Braised Beef (it has a slow heat, and even though I am sensitive with spicy foods, I was able to handle this one) or Crispy Roast Duck (if looking for non-spicy option) - really the noodles shine in any choices. Cooked just right with a nice bounce in the chew, and doesn't get mushy/soggy whether in soup or sauce. The Goldilocks choice for how noods should be cooked! #3 - Beef Roll would be ranked here for me. The crispy exterior wrap enclosing thinly sliced tender beef dressed in some slightly sweet and sticky sauce and hints of green onion and cilantro with shredded lettuce - it is like having a Chinese interpretation of a soft taco! #4 - Shrimp Shumai - nowhere in the SGV have I seen just plain shrimp for shumai. This is a shrimp lover's wet dream come true. The way they processed the shrimp and seasoned it to perfection then wrapped delicately into shumai wrapping and finish it off with a hit of color contrast with that green pea garnishing the top...pretty fly for a shumai...IYKYK. #5 - Crispy Chicken Cutlet - it is a grown-up version of the Popcorn Chicken and so craveable! Juicy chicken fried up with a batter that crunches like an explosion in your mouth that you'd want to repeat over and over until you're fighting your table for the last bite. This restaurant is in a nondescript strip mall that includes a Subway next door and Dollar Tree at the far end of the parking lot, and is within walking distance of Rainbow Sandals (if you're looking to get a pair of flip flops that are buttery soft and offers arch support before or after a delicious meal!) Parking is easy and plentiful. The restaurant itself is relatively small, but each time we have arrived and had no issues with waiting to be seated. I can report back when we bring a party of 12 on a Sunday once this happens... Restaurant was also clean, much cleaner than some of the SGV restaurants we frequent for food of this quality. The restroom was also clean and well stocked with the paper goods and soap to keep hands sanitary. Lastly, the open kitchen concept where you can watch the chefs at work on dishes ordered is a nice finishing touch to an elevated hole-in-the-wall experience. A meal at Long's noodles tastes very clean and fresh. The noodles are handmade and delicious. The broths for both the braised beef and mushroom soup were light but flavors lacking. The steamed dumplings were scrumptious per my daughter as she devoured them without sharing. Restaurant is really 3.5 stars. Food is good but not memorable and hospitality was lacking. Went with my very Chinese mom and she was impressed by the authentic cold appetizers (we got seaweed and spicy pig ears with lots of shizuan pepper "ma" flavor IYKYK. We got the pan fried pork bao, and pork + shrimp XLB which were both great, made in house fresh (my mom was watching). plus the beef roll, which were a different style than I've had before, these have some crisp shredded lettuce, which actually was kinda nice for lunch almost felt a bit taco like. Cozy size, service is quick and friendly. The spicy pork noodles were very good. Noodles al dente and broth full of flavor. Spice level is not over the top, maybe medium to slightly less if your spicy tolerance is good. The duck that comes with the duck noodles is the best I've had though. We were pleasantly surprised and quite shocked that we now have a nearby place to go to for hot soup and noodles, not to mention dumplings. We come at least twice a month and always order the mushroom soup, shrimp wanton soup and the xiao long bao (all are excellent). Our toddler always devours the noodles and the soup when we come here and she loves greeting and socializing with all the aunties in the kitchen, the servers and some customers lol. We have tried a couple of other things here also: crispy duck noodles soup, pork rib noodles and the beef rolls were the ones I love (but don't order it as much, only because we are trying to eat less meat). We tried other menu items like the non-soup wontons, fried rice, popcorn chicken, shredded chicken salad (too salty and too much mayo), beef noodle soup but did not like them as much as the ones above. A friend saw this restaurant on a drive by and suggested we go for lunch. Well we did, and I have been back 3 more times! This place is so good and the staff so nice. My favorite dish is the meat roll as I have never had something like that in another restaurant. From the first bite it exploded with flavor and with the different texture in the bite. We had the won ton soup on the first visit as well and it was very good. Upon the return trips I had or shared the fried rice, noodle dish, soup dumplings and not one was disappointing. We placed an online order and got there and the food was still not ready for an additional 15 minutes, which wouldn't be a big deal but half our meal was ice cold. San Clemente is so lucky to have this amazing dumpling house! This place is absolutely excellent -- the food, the flavors, the cleanliness -- everything was on point. We started with the spicy beef wontons, which were packed with flavor and almost like tender meatballs inside. So delicious! The ground beef was perfectly seasoned, and the texture was just right. Next, we had the bok choy and cucumber appetizers -- light, fresh, and delicately flavored. A perfect way to start the meal. For mains, we ordered the regular pork xiao long bao, which were absolutely delicious. Be sure to mix a little vinegar, chili oil, and soy sauce for dipping -- it really brings out the flavor of the dumplings. It's the next best thing to Din Tai Fung -- but right here in San Clemente, and at much more reasonable prices. As a bonus, the restaurant was spotless. I ordered the wonton soup with a side of noodles as well as pan fried chicken dumplings. Let me just say that the bowl of soup is absolutely ginormous. Definitely can share with one other person if not, two other people. They were kind enough to bring a side of noodles in some additional broth, which was very much appreciated. The pan fried dumplings were a little overcooked, but tasted delicious. I really enjoyed the pork scallion wontons in the soup. The broth had a good flavor, but I added some additional flavoring that were on the table, including chili oil and soy sauce. Very friendly staff. A nice casual atmosphere with plenty of tables and some counter seating. Looks like they do a tremendous takeout business as well because I kept seeing drivers coming to pick up food. I would come back for this especially before or after visiting the San Clemente outlets. They made a mistake on our 2nd soup order. I order beef wonton; instead they gave me chicken wonton. It was ok coz i didn't want them to throw it out. On my first slurp of the soup, it tasted fishy. Might be due to the seaweed wrapper used as a topping. Hmmm... not a fan. Perhaps, if I order this next time, I shall ask them to take out the seaweed altogether. Service as well was good. Jerry was attentive. He is the son of the owners. The owners look like they are also the cooks in the kitchen. Good sign of our food coming out delicious... family owned! We went there on their 3rd day. It was new.
