I got an excellent fade today from Longwood barbershop. The shop is very convenient for just about anyone in longwood medical area, doctors, nurses, PA's, NP's, admins - really anyone. My haircut took only about 30 minutes, just about enough time to get cut on my lunch break, as the shop is conveniently located across the street from Beth Israel hospital. It's very tidy inside. WOW So many mistakes in the actual haircut, it was rushed once someone was waiting, they were rude, I was argued with, borderline threatened and paid 30$ (25 plus 5 tip, still tipped) for a haircut I need to go elsewhere to fix (good thing its fixable). Wicked rude young man who made comments and started arguments even though he was irrelevant to the transaction and just wanted to feel important, here's your attention bud. The barber was sitting at the desk on his cellphone, clearly talking to a friend. 7-8 minutes passed with me sitting there twiddling my thumbs. I finally walked out. It'd been way too long since my last haircut, and I was beginning to lose my balance due to the Amazonian jungle of hair I had grown on my head. As such, I decided to give these guys a shot, and I'm glad I did. It's a barbershop. Not a salon. Not a hairdresser. These guys aren't clipper enthusiasts, they're barbers. They're very good at what they do; the fellow that cut my hair, I think he may have actually been clipping at light-speed. I was very impressed. It was quick and easy. Cash only and $18. I've been to this barbershop 4-5 times now...It is hit or miss, but honestly, I will NEVER go back based on principle alone. It is convenient as it is close to work (the Longwood hospitals) and there is hardly ever a wait....but this in itself should raise a red flag... 2 stars for a decent fade, 0 stars for deceptive practice and overall poor barbershop atmosphere. The younger barbers I have had have been decent, however, today I had the ultimate displeasure of being shafted by an older bald gentleman (not trying to discriminate, but describing so you can avoid if you must go here). Today I said twice (because of previous reviews) that I did NOT want my beard touched...I can trim it myself at home. Who in there right mind would willingly pay $15 for a 2 minute beard trim? I had to ask the gentleman numerous times to repeat himself because 1) he was soft-spoken and could absolutely NOT be heard over the trimmers, and 2) because he acted like he didn't understand me. How do I know he was acting? Because he was able to comprehend "please use a #3 on the sides and back, blending it into finger length on top. Thin it out as my hair grows in thick, but watch the ever retreating widows peak." But apparently, he didn't understand "do NOT trim my beard, I can do that at home." How do I know I got shafted? Because the gentleman never asked me what length I wanted my beard. He went straight at it and before I knew it, trimmed off half my face. Was I supposed to tell him to stop? And commute home with a half trimmed beard? Eff that...and I'm sure he knew that. Besides, at a previous visit, one of the younger barbers started on my beard, but when I flinched and objected, he said "don't worry, no charge" because no one else was waiting (I assumed). This was (in my opinion) a similar situation as there were 3 barbers, but no other customers. However, when I got up to pay today, the older gentleman told me $40. I had 2x $20s, expecting to be paid $10 back ($25 cut + $5 tip). Knowing I couldn't get cash back...I voiced my objections, in front of him and a younger barber (playing games on his cell), but knew I didn't stand a chance. I got a sly smirk and a finger point to the posted $15 beard trim....again, who willingly pays $15 for a 2 minute beard trim...? When I objected, there was no apology, or attempt on behalf of the younger, more fluent English speaking barber (he cut my hair before) to intervene and settle the "confusion." I'm not about to squabble over $10....I usually tip $5-10 depending on the cut/barber anyways, but again, this is based on principle alone. Other reasons I will NEVER go back: 1) I would rather wait longer in a friendlier atmosphere to get a more honest barber, even if I have to fix the fade at home 2) I've shown up ~2 hours prior to posting hours, and the shop is closed. A closed barber shop no longer carries a "convenience factor." 3) You can find more affordable barbers (I've found $15 barbers, but they are usually packed) 4) You can find friendlier barbers for ~price. The language barrier is definitely a contributing factor here. The younger barbers are definitely friendlier. 5) One visit, the barber stopped, for honestly over 10 minutes, to have a conversation with another (assumed) customer. I had to ask him to continue...so I could catch my bus. read more

Been there twice now and same as the previous reviews, I was highly satisfied with this barbershop. Incredibly easy to walk in and get a great, quick cut. Only had to wait not even five minutes the first time and walked right in on my lunch break the second. The guys are efficient and very skilled. Both the shop and the barbers are pretty quiet, which I honestly prefer, with of course the exception of the scissors quickly snipping away. The only knock I have on the place is that it is cash only and a bit pricey for a barbershop at $18, not including tip, but both worth it and understandable given the rent. read more

I regretfully decided to try this place out after seeing its positive reviews and since it is very close to my house on Mission Hill. The shop itself was nice and clean, however the haircut I received was the exact opposite. The young man who cut my hair was obviously very inexperienced. He seemed very unsure of his every move and was cutting random pieces of hair with no plan in mind. His skill with the trimmer was just as unimpressive as the lines around my head and ear were not straight or symmetrical. I would not recommend this place, but if you do find yourself here I suggest trying to get one of the older gentlemen as the barber next to me seemed a little better. read more

Quite honestly one of the worst haircuts I've ever gotten. I'll preface this by saying the gentlemen at the barbershop were incredibly nice and friendly. There's no complaints of them as people and they were certainly enjoyable to be around. As for the haircuts, yikes. That's really all I can say about it - I'm writing this a mere two hours after I got the haircut and I'm still in shock of it. To give credit, the sides look decent and looked somewhat of what I asked for. However, I asked for the top to be trimmed, but I guess the barber and I had different definitions of what trimming meant as the guy cut roughly about 2/3 of my hair length in a span of five minutes, all the while staying more focused on his conversations with the other gentlemen in the shop than what he was working on in front of him. There really didn't seem to be a plan for what he wanted to do after I asked him to cut it a certain way but more like cutting it down until he thought there was no more to cut. I'll definitely be sporting a hat permanently for the next couple of weeks until it grows back and hopefully it won't look like a jungle when grown out, though I wouldn't be surprised since I don't think he considered how the hair was going to grow out while he was going ballistic on it. All in all, I had moderately high expectations going into this barbershop based on the reviews here but I guess you can't really expect much out of a $20 haircut. Really wish their hospitality translated into cutting ability but I guess you can't have it all. read more

I have created an account just to write this review. I went there after reading the glowing reviews on Yelp and Google, turns out it is the worst hair cut I have ever had. I specifically requested the barber (older gentleman) to keep them relatively short on the sides and slightly trimmed at the top. The gentleman nodded in agreement, as if he had understood everything and then proceed with the mad chopping frenzy that lasted just 2 mins. Nope he was not done yet, as if messing up my hairs at the top and sides was not enough, he left the hairs at the right side (just behind years) uncut. They might have been great a few years ago, but as of now, their 25$ hair cut is simply horrible. Though on side note the barber was friendly and the shop is conveniently located for the people visiting Longwood medical area. read more

I just went for a haircut here this afternoon, so I'm sure they will remember this incident. The service was fast, there was no wait, they were very friendly. I thought we were on the same page about how my hair was to be cut. The barber offered no chit-chat during the haircut, which is a big plus to me. When we were finished I immediately noticed something was wrong with my hair. I occasionally part it on the side when it gets longer, but the barber cut my hair so that the part is -permanent- and the hair on one side of the part is a completely different length than the other. As one side is too short, my only options are to deal with a visibly uneven haircut, or to go somewhere else and have them buzz my entire head to match the section which Longwood Barbershop left too short. They comped the haircut (I still tipped - he still gave me his time), but I will not be going back. I showed him two pictures of my hair before we got started - NEITHER photo had a part. I specifically told him that I -DO NOT- part my hair when it is short. I felt that was enough. Unfortunately, I'm blind as a bat, so I had my glasses off while he was cutting my hair and didn't catch it in time. Here we are. I refused to let them fix it, at least let's leave some hair for someone else to try and salvage. My wedding reception is on Saturday, I pray that someone else can fix this. I will not be returning here, comped haircut or not. I'm giving them 2 stars for friendliness and the level of service, but the haircut is atrocious. I work at Beth Israel Deaconess and was excited to have the barber shop open so close to my office. First it is cash-only so be aware of that. There are several ATMs in the area and you could also make a purchase at CVS and get cash back for those of us with ATM fees at foreign banks. I gave them a try this morning and I was impressed with how it came out. It's small and decidedly old-school. The cut was done almost entirely with scissors and they only used a clipper to cut in the hair line. They also do shaves with a straight edge razor. The cut cost $18 plus tip. I can't say enough about Sam Ben Salem the owner of Longwood Barbershop! I walked in and asked him if he could come to my husband's hospital room at Beth Israel (my husband is on his 16th day there for a neurological syndrome) to do a cut and to shave him. He, without hesitation, agreed to come and then after working from 7AM to 7PM, came by and did a wonderful cut (my husband is very picky and was very happy with it) and shave. This young man is compassionate and personable and most definitely my hero! I have been going to this barbershop for a few years. I have always had a good experience. Mahmood is my go-to guy currently, but honestly I've always had a good cut with any of the guys. Mahmad is great. They all are very courteous. They are focused on quality, and on customer satisfaction. They still, however, are well staffed and keep the wait times down. For this reason, I know I can always get a quick cut, even if I have just a short break during the work day. read more

The barber was friendly but I did not get a fade... when I asked to change it to a high and tight because there was no difference in the length of my hair anywhere he seemed to be a little offended. Both Mahmood and his son did an excellent job with my hair and all I needed to do was show him a photo of the way I wanted my haircut. They are also professional, kind and compassionate. I came into the shop right before they were closing in urgent need of a cut after a long day at work and they generously let me come and stayed later to cut my hair. I have been to numerous barbershops in my life and I can say honestly this has been the absolute worst. I went in here due to the proximity and high ratings and I left here looking like a grown man with a 5th grader's haircut. I showed them pictures and it does not look anything close to resembling to what I wanted. If this place charged $9-10 then I would agree that I came in here for a cheap haircut then I should realistic expectations with mediocre barbers who don't have proper training but even at the $18 price point I would advise other people to look elsewhere. I wasn't even asking for complicated haircut, just something textured/choppy on the top and it came out all straight and shorter. If you're looking for people to butcher haircuts then come to this place because you can pay them to do that correctly. read more
