Having spent most of my childhood in Taiwan then 10 years in the 626 area in Southern California, let's just say I am very picky when it comes to Taiwanese food. This place definitely hits the spot and is able to satisfy my Taiwanese food cravings whenever I come in. The service is always quick and nice. They are also super kid-friendly. I have two young children who can be messy eaters, spilling water and dropping food, and the waiters have always been so patient with them. 100% recommend this place for anyone who is looking to experience authentic Taiwanese food! read more

Looking for Chai Taiwanese Kitchen is tucked in an unassuming corner from 99 Ranch. It came to my attention after a very convincing IG reel from Chaucakes, where it was duly bookmarked. Perfect timing to give it a try via a TGTG double pickup on 3/15/26. It was very rainy Sunday night arriving before closing. We were handed two well packed bags and headed home. What a terrific way to test out the bevs and goods beforehand. The generous TGTG haul including the following: two fruit teas, two milk teas, and two rice bowls. We divvied up the proteins and ended up with very satisfying late night meals. Both had steamed rice topped with succulent chicken wings, well spiced popcorn chicken, bamboo shoots, and flavorful braised cabbage. Definitely we look forward to checking out other menu items and dining onsite in the future. The restaurant shares a large parking lot and accessible via Community Transit. This is a go to place with great food, drink, fast service and long (ish) waits. There is always a buzz here. People getting Taiwanese greata, like Oyster Pancake, three cup chicken, stewed pork over rice, popcorn chicken, pork chop. Their drinks are very good too. I haven't gotten it, but they also have hotpots that look great. Would I say this is the best Taiwanese restaurant in the area? Yeah, I think so. We ordered the winter special lamb hotpot, which came with so many ingredients that I had to move some off the top to get to the lamb and other items at the bottom. One of the rare places that serves stinky tofu if you like it. This chain is amazing for Taiwanese food and they actually have pretty decent tea as well. There's plenty of parking as it shares its lot with the 99 ranch grocery store nearby and the service is really quick. I always stop into Looking for Chai when I'm in the area because there's not a ton of Taiwanese restaurants in the greater Seattle area. I love that they have a ton of drink options and all of the classics. I like their popcorn chicken, fried rice dishes, and the traditional taiwanese rice noodles, though it is not frequently available. I remember they used to have desserts like shaved ice too! I was shopping for groceries nearby and decided to stop by Looking For Chai Taiwanese Kitchen for lunch. For some reason the main sign outside says YiFang Fruit Tea and Looking for Chai is only displayed on the windows. Kind of strange. Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup ($15.95) - I hesitated to order this dish since other reviews state that the noodles are overcooked and too soft. I'm glad to report that this isn't the case, at least during my visit. The noodles are pretty much perfectly cooked with still a bit of a bite to them. They are topped with a generous portion of stewed beef. Most pieces are soft and tender, with great flavor, but a couple of pieces, especially the tendon, are still very tough and hard to chew. I'm not sure what vegetable they include in the noodles - it reminds me of (and possibly is) A-choy, giving a taste and texture very similar to lettuce, although a bit stemmier. Everything is in a broth that exhibits a fantastic beefy tomato and veggie flavor. While it's not the perfect Taiwanese beef noodle soup, it's pretty dang good. (4/5) Deep Fried Pork Chop Bento ($15.50) - Fantastic fried pork chop. It's moist, juicy and tender, crisp on the outside, with a generous dusting of five spice and white pepper, giving fantastic flavor in every bite. This bento also comes with a variety of other dishes. Firstly egg & tomato, this one thickened with a cornstarch slurry, with tangy tomatoes mixed in and sheets of egg on top. It's sweet, thick, and savory. There's perfectly tender rice with stewed minced pork belly on top, with the juices dripping down to flavor the rice. There's cabbage that's super flavorful with tons of garlic mixed in. Finally, there's a small portion of corn kernels that are pretty generic as if they came out from a can, but good. Overall I was very impressed with this biandang. (5/5) Oolong Milk Tea, 50% Sweet, 50% Ice w/ Boba ($5.70) - The tea is somewhat fragrant - you can tell it's an oolong, but it's a bit more heavy towards the creamer. Sweetness is fine at 50% maybe a bit too much for people who want "not too sweet" but not overpowering. They give a bit more boba than other places so you can enjoy the pearls until the very last sip. The boba is nice with a good chew. It's just a bit firmer than perfect and they are a bit inconsistent in size. Milk Tea Rating: 4/5 Boba Rating: 4/5 I went back the next week to get another drink Black Milk Tea, 50% Sweet, 50% Ice w/ Boba ($5.70) - The tea taste comes out way more in this drink vs. the oolong. It's very interesting, not very fragrant and without much nuance. The best term I can use to describe the tea is "hollow". It reminds me of Gold Peak, kind of that industrial tea taste, but better. I honestly don't mind it at all in this drink, since it pairs very well with the creamer and sweetness level. The boba this time around is pretty much on the dot, smooth round pearls almost perfectly chewy throughout. Looking For Chai Taiwanese Kitchen is a solid Taiwanese restaurant. Been a little home sick and craving oyster omelet so after searching yelp I came across this place. Threw the wife in the car and made the trip to Edmonds. It's a small restaurant but simple and inviting. It really hit the spot right down to the avocado smoothie and milk tea! We ordered the oyster omelet (of course), fried green beans and cucumber salad all were delicious and exactly what I expected! My wife ordered the braised pork feet over rice and I had the shredded chicken over rice wife didn't share but omg the shredded chicken was delicious I added the chili which warning is HOT! For a first timer to stinky tofu, Chai's version is really mild and not off-putting. Granted you have to have some tolerance for fermented and funky foods (e.g. fish sauce, shrimp paste, kimchi). Portion is also really hefty. I've never finished a hot pot yet. But if you're super hungry, it'll fill you up good. I've seen some families splitting a hot pot along with other dishes. The service is up to standard and they also have bubble tea (Yi Fang) if you're wanting to end your meal with something sweet. I'm a smidge confused by the signage at this restaurant, which I've always thought was Yi Fang Tea. However, I just learned learned that it's also a Taiwanese restaurant and that Yi Fang is no more. My family and I stopped by for dinner recently. It's always a little overwhelming to order from a new to us restaurant, as well as ordering from a menu that we're unfamiliar with. But we pulled it together like we do and ordered the honey chicken wings, dry noodle with pork sauce, two bento boxes: braised pork belly and popcorn chicken. My daughter likened the chicken wings to the salt & pepper chicken wings we enjoy at Fortune Garden in CID. The noodle dish was flavorful. I like that they have 3 rice options to choose from: Spiced pork rice (not spicy at all), chicken rice and steamed rice. Everything was good! Amongst Taiwanese groups, they say this is the more legit location. Also, they eliminated(?) YiFang Fruit Tea. They do sell drinks but not under the franchise. Outside, the YiFang sign still hangs, but no Looking For Chai sign, to confuse or attract would-be diners or tea drinkers. Anyway, we wander in at normal dinner time and sat shortly after. No wait except the time to set up the table. Service is a step above what I call efficient-swift. I asked several questions, and he slowed down to answer. The décor is basic or utilitarian. They are around the corner from the very large Ranch 99 complex, so parking is plentiful. This visit is from March this year. The Food: 刈包 Taiwanese Pork Burger (2 Pcs), $10.95 - 5 Stars This pair is very meaty and filling. For the lighter appetite, this is easily a meal. There is a good mixture of protein and pickled veggies, very classically done. 炸臭豆腐 Taiwanese Stinky Tofu, $12.95 - 3 Stars This is a love it or hate it for many. For the connoisseur, the stinkier, the better. Alas, not stinky enough. The stink comes from the fermentation, which takes time, most places couldn't be bothered and/or doesn't want to scare the adjacent dinners (legit reason). Anyway, this is fried tofu with a light fermentation, and an excellent dollop of pickled veggies, which was the saving grace of this plate. 椒麻脆皮雞 Crispy Chicken with Special Spicy Sauce, $14.50 - 5 Stars This isn't just popcorn chicken. My friend order one of the spicy Taiwanese beef mini hot pot and I got one of the Black pepper sauce Fried Chicken with noodle and a fried pork chop to share for our appetizer. The food came out pretty quickly. The appetizer was good. I got my food before my friend did. So, I started munching it down already. I would say that it tasted pretty plain the chicken and the noodle itself. Without the black pepper sauce, it would taste like it was done without any seasoning into it. If that is the case, they should have added more sauce to my dish. My friend got his mini hot pot. Portion was decent but a lot of vegetable. It was spicy at all. Tasted like pretty plain too. Popcorn Chicken-Crispy and with the same basil as the fried squid balls. I didn't get any spicy on it and it was already flavorful. The pieces can be of varying sizes but they were all cooked well with a good crunch. Brown Sugar Pearl Oolong Tea Latte-I didn't realize that you couldn't change the sweetness or ice level on this, or else I would have gotten a different drink. The drink was too sweet for my tastes, even after the ice melted. The boba was cooked perfectly. Wonderfully toothsome with a good texture inside and out. I should've double checked on Yelp, but Looking for Chai is located in the same place as Yifang, with Yifang's sign being the one you can see from the parking lot. The lot is shared with 99 Ranch and all the other restaurants in the plaza so there are plenty of parking spots but it is also extremely busy. The space inside feels small, but it wasn't too busy on a Saturday afternoon. I was very content with the beef noodle soup and black pepper sizzling pork. I'm reposting my comment from any review site. First of all, I can't comment on the service and atmosphere as I ordered via Uber Eats. However, the steamed chicken leg with scallion and steamed pork belly with garlic sauce came cold, like it just came out of the fridge cold, way colder than the outside temperature. Someone messed up and forgot to microwave before they put them in the bag. My third dish was vermicelli noodle, which came hot. Ordered via delivery service, I certainly lowered my expectations and was willing to accept that the food was not going to be as good as dining in, but having to heat up these two dishes separately took time, and it was hard to heat the chicken legs evenly in the microwave. More importantly, I certainly did not expect any reputable Chinese restaurant to precook dishes and keep them in the refrigerator. This ruined my family's experience. We were hoping for some good food based on the reviews. I am very disappointed and am unlikely to order from Looking for Chai again anytime soon. read more

After I wrote my previous review, I came here a few times as they started making stinky tofu, which is rare in this area. I have noticed that they have improved their service and their food in general during these years. Currently, they also sell bubble tea under Yi-Fang brand name. They sell more Taiwanese street food such as stinky tofu, pig blood cake, Taiwanese pop corn chicken etc. During the most recent visit, I noticed that they also had chicken rice. I asked if it was Chia-Yi chicken rice, and the waiter said yes. However, when it came, it wasn't. I was disappointed. The chicken rice was so sweet that I could barely eat. While the food has been improved in general, I need to take down one star for the chicken rice. However, I like other items that tasted as authentic Taiwanese cuisine, especially butterfly pork. Small-ish Taiwanese restaurant on the side of the 99 Ranch Market in Edmonds. It's co-located with a Yi Fang fruit tea shop, and it's much easier to spot the Yi Fang sign. Was doing okay business for Sunday lunch. We got the Taiwanese pork burger, the popcorn chicken, fried pork chop, and the satay beef hotpot. The popcorn chicken and pork chop are both fried, and both were decent in that they tasted as expected. The pork "burger" is a piece of seasoned pork belly with some peanuts wrapped by a piece of the white Chinese style rice bun. The peanut is actually a good compliment for the extra crunchy texture. The hotpot comes on its own small butane stove. It has a few pieces of beef, fish balls, mushroom and napa. Extra satay sauce is on the side. Tasted decent. We were pretty full after finishing everything. Bill was $54 including tax and tip, which is quite reasonable. read more

Best Taiwanese food in or close to Seattle. Every dish I've ordered here has been fantastic.

They have been opened for a month now after the remodel & revamping the menu. They now offer dine-in and I love the new decor. It's very clean looking and reminds me of the aesthetic of hip/trendy restaurants have in Taiwan. I miss some items from the old menu but I gotta say, there is definitely some ease with ordering on the new menu because these lunch boxes are awesome. I love that they include most of the entrees they used to have but portioned out for individual instead of family style. However, the portions are actually pretty fair! My husband gets full off of the bento boxes and he can put away quite a bit of food. I like that they offer street food style appetizers. In my opinion, the popcorn chicken should have a little more spice and crispness, or offer different levels of spicy. My favorite bento box is between the fried chicken steak and the crispy chicken in spicy sauce. I love that they separate the sauce so the chicken doesn't get soggy. Oh and I was very pleasantly surprised to see they merged with Yifang Fruit Tea and that they offer brown sugar oolong latte any time of the day. Oh no! What happened!? Did I miss anything? I haven't been here in a while and I have to say, I was very disappointed and am thinking of skipping some of what used to be very good such as this bento. I took a bite of my rice and it was very disappointing I couldn't do a second time. The rice tasted old and mushy. Usually, rice is the most promising and it is what make the side dish pop up and be unforgettable. A good bowl of rice carry out the rest of the meal and make the whole experience more satisfying. I was dumbfounded and deceived. The rest went downhill. What used to be memorable and enjoyable let me down. I should have settled for a bowl of soup. I should have ordered my once favorite beef noodle soup. I will not order the bento again unless they bring back some good quality and well cooked rice. Oh no, I'm not doing that.
