We were celebrating my son's 16th birthday, and the team made the evening feel special from the moment we arrived. They seated us by the window, had a birthday card waiting for him, and every staff member we interacted with provided exceptional service. The food exceeded our expectations. Everything we ordered was prepared perfectly and was exactly what we expected for a restaurant at this price point and in this location. To top it all off, they surprised my son by adding a candle to his dessert, making the celebration even more memorable. Overall, it was an outstanding dining experience, and we will definitely be back.

Those two boxes were checked but the rest of the 2 and a half hour visit was abysmal to say the least. I made a reservation a week before, knowing this place offers the best views in Portland, & hoping to solidify a great spot with our meal - no. The hostess said our best bet would be to sit in the lounge, we accepted & did as such. It was a decent amount of time until we received water - our ordered beverages came significantly later. We didn't order our main dish until 10 minutes before closing. When we ordered an over $100 bottle of wine we were met with an eye roll and sigh of frustration because our waiter was overworked & didn't have time to care about what we, as paying customers, wanted. I want to be clear that I do not fault our waiter for his reaction because he was visibly overwhelmed throughout the entirety of our visit. I am significantly disappointed in the customer service - as horrendous and incredibly long even the smallest requests took. If I make a reservation for 7:30 and leave the restaurant at 10 - after having reminded the staff several times of what we wanted or needed that is indicative of the establishment and management not the individuals. The food prices are not reflective of the overall service and experience. To be frank, if you (as an establishment) do not have the bandwidth to cater to your customers needs, then the prices should coincide with the experience, or hire more staff to fill the gaps that exist. I am genuinely saddened that my mom and I, who both love a great restaurant experience, left dissatisfied and disappointed in her celebratory dinner. The food was great. But not great enough to overcompensate for the overall nature of the experience.

The area has developed quickly and having grown up nearby and moved away years ago, it's amazing to see what's happened along here. Prices - well, everyone has their hand out along here. We were in town somewhat last minute staying at Hotel Indigo. The hotel provides $10 drink coupons so we decided to drop in for an impromptu drink while planning our dinner strategy. It was already 7p so no view but live music and a nice buzzy ambiance. Wait staff were fast and friendly, and before we knew it two delicious cocktails were in front of us. At the same time, I overheard the waitress at the table beside us saying that food could be ordered from El Gaucho downstairs. So we asked for a menu and started perusing. If you don't know El Gaucho it's a classic steak restaurant with lots of cuts and sizes, a sprinkling of seafood, the usual salads, and tableside this and that. A notch above Ruth's Chris, Morton's or The Capital Grille but with Peter Luger Manhattan prices. Yes, that's right, Manhattan prices in Vancouver. WA. The Couv is all grown up. Or at least trying to be, Like Witness Tree, El Gaucho has a mandatory 20% gratuity regardless of party size. Theoretically this shouldn't be an issue if you know restaurant culture and tip appropriately but I think a mandatory fee rubs many wrong to assume service will always be at that level. And on top of very high prices. A $72 6oz filet is $86, so those 8 bites better be damn good. That said, we ordered oysters, a filet, seafood pasta, and wine. The wine list was decent but not as extensive for a premium steak restaurant. Wines had the typical markup which meant $20-35+ per glass. Both the pasta and steak were good but - and this may sound picky - at $72 for 6 ounces of steak (a bar of soap) I expect perfection which means medium rare throughout. The steak was medium in some parts. If I can achieve medium rare throughout at home it should be possible here. So here's the math (rounded) for those interested. Total bill: $295. $225 food and drinks, $45 service fee (mandatory 20%), and $24 tax (8.8%). Interestingly, the 20% service charge is taxed which means we actually paid $49 or 28.8%. Had I been given the choice of my own 20% tip it would be applied to food and drink and a slightly lower bill. Not a huge deal but these are the little details - call it "nickel and diming" patrons - that rub many wrong. One note - another server came to our table before our food arrived and placed a steak in front of me. Before he could place the other dish I told him it wasn't our order. He picked up the steak and delivered to another table. In most restaurants - and certainly in a premium setting - that dish should have been remade. Whether perception or simple hygiene you simply can't do that. All in all, the Witness Tree was a nice spot, with tasty cocktails and ambiance. Prices and service fee will be off putting for some, and not sure this would be my go-to as there are many rooftop / view options nearby.

This little bar is my favorite place at this McMenamins location (although that Cove Bar is running a close second!). The view of the Columbia River, the food service, the attention to detail of my doppio espresso (a freshly sliced lemon peel & two lumps of rock sugar!), and the very yummy rosemary nuts, keep me coming back here whenever I can. McMenamins locations are often adventures all on their own - Kalama Harbor Lodge is no exception - but this location has the added distinction of being right on the river where you can watch the river traffic go by as you relax with a beverage and a server who quickly takes care of whatever you're looking for. If you go, and I encourage you to go, make sure you spend some time relaxing with the view. It's worth it!

This place is special. McMenamin's properties are always full of character and attention to detail as they usually choose quirky, historic buildings to renovate. What's special about Harbor Lodge is that they managed to achieve that charm in a new build. I love wandering the property taking in the landscaping, architectural details, and views along the Columbia River. One of my biggest criticisms of McMenamin's is that their menu is tired, and has long needed some new dishes to spice things up. I love that McMenamin's Harbor Lodge Pub has dishes unique to this property. The prawns are one of my favorites, served in a creamy sauce with garlic bread on the side. Yum! McMenamin's Harbor Lodge and the neighboring market are wonderful additions to the Kalama community, and definitely worth a visit if you haven't been.

Pro tip: Do yourself a favor and specifically ask for Scott when you make your reservation. We ordered from the Prime Hour menu, which is an absolute bargain. You get to choose between soup or salad, two different entrees, and two different desserts. We both went with the seafood Tagliatelle, and wow. It was so rich, generously loaded with halibut, scallops, shrimp, and prosciutto in an incredible lemon pasta sauce. Note for future diners: They do automatically include a 20% service charge on the bill. However, Scott's service was so exceptional that we happily tipped extra on top of it. My steak was very good though the outside was a little crispier than I like it. I have eaten Argentinian steak before at another restaurant so i guess this is how it is cooked in Argentina. The mac and cheese was very good though the macaroni noodles seem way large. Service was impeccable and you do get what you pay. Noise level was moderate.
