Great rooftop vibe and a fun place to hang out for an afternoon. We ordered a beer flight, and as someone who's had quite a few brewery flights and is pretty open-minded when it comes to beer, this one unfortunately missed the mark for me. Out of the 10 beers, only about 3 were somewhat enjoyable and around 4 were honestly undrinkable. Thankfully, the food redeemed things a bit. We got the pizza with artichoke hearts, mozzarella, ricotta, garlic, and basil. It was super flavorful and the dough was delicious, especially the crust. We also tried the catfish po' boy. It was a little salty, but the fish itself was cooked really well and the sauce was tasty. The spring mix salad with cranberries, slivered almonds, and feta was good too, though I personally would've liked a better toppings-to-lettuce ratio. Overall, I'd come back for the rooftop and food, but probably know to expect mediocre brews.

We ordered a salad and it took about 45 minutes to come out. Their kale Caesar was way better than I thought it would be for a bar! Very fresh with a delicious dressing. Simple with pepitas, kale and raddicio. Cheese and dressing. Their beers are some of my favorite from a local brewery. Their Cloud Mentality is a good choice for IPAs. The line gets long for the bar and there's no way to close your tab if you leave it open unless you're willing to wait in the line again to pay. If you don't do that you will be automatically charged 20% gratuity which is a good deal to not have to line up just to close out.

The area has developed quickly and having grown up nearby and moved away years ago, it's amazing to see what's happened along here. Prices - well, everyone has their hand out along here. We were in town somewhat last minute staying at Hotel Indigo. The hotel provides $10 drink coupons so we decided to drop in for an impromptu drink while planning our dinner strategy. It was already 7p so no view but live music and a nice buzzy ambiance. Wait staff were fast and friendly, and before we knew it two delicious cocktails were in front of us. At the same time, I overheard the waitress at the table beside us saying that food could be ordered from El Gaucho downstairs. So we asked for a menu and started perusing. If you don't know El Gaucho it's a classic steak restaurant with lots of cuts and sizes, a sprinkling of seafood, the usual salads, and tableside this and that. A notch above Ruth's Chris, Morton's or The Capital Grille but with Peter Luger Manhattan prices. Yes, that's right, Manhattan prices in Vancouver. WA. The Couv is all grown up. Or at least trying to be, Like Witness Tree, El Gaucho has a mandatory 20% gratuity regardless of party size. Theoretically this shouldn't be an issue if you know restaurant culture and tip appropriately but I think a mandatory fee rubs many wrong to assume service will always be at that level. And on top of very high prices. A $72 6oz filet is $86, so those 8 bites better be damn good. That said, we ordered oysters, a filet, seafood pasta, and wine. The wine list was decent but not as extensive for a premium steak restaurant. Wines had the typical markup which meant $20-35+ per glass. Both the pasta and steak were good but - and this may sound picky - at $72 for 6 ounces of steak (a bar of soap) I expect perfection which means medium rare throughout. The steak was medium in some parts. If I can achieve medium rare throughout at home it should be possible here. So here's the math (rounded) for those interested. Total bill: $295. $225 food and drinks, $45 service fee (mandatory 20%), and $24 tax (8.8%). Interestingly, the 20% service charge is taxed which means we actually paid $49 or 28.8%. Had I been given the choice of my own 20% tip it would be applied to food and drink and a slightly lower bill. Not a huge deal but these are the little details - call it "nickel and diming" patrons - that rub many wrong. One note - another server came to our table before our food arrived and placed a steak in front of me. Before he could place the other dish I told him it wasn't our order. He picked up the steak and delivered to another table. In most restaurants - and certainly in a premium setting - that dish should have been remade. Whether perception or simple hygiene you simply can't do that. All in all, the Witness Tree was a nice spot, with tasty cocktails and ambiance. Prices and service fee will be off putting for some, and not sure this would be my go-to as there are many rooftop / view options nearby.

They actually had a couple choices, and I got the cauliflower tinga. I don't know if it's because I had more coffee and alcohol than food in me at the moment, but it was the best dish I've tasted in a long time. Very spicy, but flavorful. Every cocktail unfolded in layers of flavors. (I tried a sip of my friends' drinks, and I had the Jazzy Aperol Spritz.) Very unique and complex combinations. Seriously, vegans--don't sleep on the tinga. I tried to order another one for the road but there was a snafoo, maybe they saw it and dismissed it as a dupe. It got figured out but was a little awkward. Regardless, I will easily give five stars because otherwise the service was lovely, and I'm going to be dreaming about this dish until I can get a babysitter and go back for a date night.

It's just like ordering from McDonalds. The prices are high for very little. I paid $16 for a small drink called Home for the Holiday. Go to Sandy Hut instead, cheaper stronger and tastes better too. Jk, that's comparing apples to oranges....but if you want an espresso martini that's actually worth it...

There's a lot of great variety on the breakfast menu, like benedicts, cheddar-jalapeno grits, and French toast. At dinner we loved trying out the location-specific menu items - the King Kalama burger and the Hawaii Five-O Pressed Sandwich, as well as the Saigon Kick Chicken Tenders. All was substantial and all was tasty. As always, we loved the dark, whimsical decor of the whole place. It set such a cool vibe during our visit and made our dining experience/stay fun and memorable. I highly recommend even if you're just stopping in for a drink!

I like mine rare, she medium rare and they were both prepared perfectly, plus a side of sauteed mushrooms. We were both stuffed but eyed the tableside Banana's Foster. It was for two but our server offered to make half an order so we could each sample the goodness. The service was excellent; the tableside preparation was showmanship quality. Our check was $363 and we tipped him $100 for outstanding service. We don't normally dine like that but as our 34th, we lived it up with Blanton's, Rombauer, filet, sides and Banana's Foster. Most customers naturally assume a charge of that size is a gratuity for the staff who provided the service. Structuring it otherwise creates a misleading impression and lacks the transparency I expect from a high-end restaurant. I have no issue paying for excellent food, service, or even higher menu prices. What I object to is a pricing practice that appears designed to make customers believe they are rewarding the servers when they are not. Trust is a critical part of any fine dining experience, and this policy has completely eroded mine. Because of it, I will never return to El Gaucho.
