Our server Leonard was very amiable and tried hard to please. We ordered cocktails, an espresso martini and a margarita both which were pretty good. After taking some time to look at the food choices, I ordered a cup of clam chowder and we both opted for the grilled chicken BLT. Our waiter then told us that there was no grilled chicken available, only blackened chicken for tacos. this rings an alarm bell and tells me that the chicken and probably most of the menu offerings are frozen and not freshly prepared. If a menu item is not available I would think it would be disclosed when the menus are first presented. I understand that sometimes a restaurant runs out of popular items, but like I said, the place was empty. I settled on the Smashburger with fries and my friend opted for the Bistro Bacon Smashburger with chips. The food came out fairly quickly. The clam chowder which was ordered very hot was served warm at best although it was flavorful. My Smashburger was way overcooked. My friend's bistro burger was served with fries instead of the chips ordered, however, the fries were good. I also just noticed that there is a 2 1/2% credit card surcharge. I guess that's common in restaurants. The restaurant supervisor did stop by the table just to greet us and ask if everything was OK. We did mention being disappointed that there was no chicken available for which she apologized. Will I be going back? Probably not. There are too many better choices for my money.

Somewhat limited non-caffeine options, but not none. The smoothies do not come with milk, they are just syrup and ice blended up. Most of the staff are quite nice. The cashier was unhelpful when I had an issue with my drink, but it was resolved by the manager swiftly and without complaint. Considering the possibility of rotating staff (and the cashiers young age) I'd say such an experience does not look poorly upon the establishment. Rather, the way management handled the issue looks favorably on them. We did not get ice cream so I cannot comment on it. It was expensive, and perhaps overpriced. However, this is wildwood in the summer, so everything is expensive. For those curious, I got the 4 Berry smoothie, which I was expecting to contain fruit and a dairy product. Instead it was ice and syrup. I tried to reach a resolution with the cashier by explaining the issue and asking for an alternative drink. The cashier declined and said I'd have to purchase a replacement. I stepped aside so I wouldn't hinder other customers and asked another staff member if a manager was present. They were, and when I explained my issue and we reached a resolution where part of my drink would be poured out and replaced by milk (I honestly didn't want to chance a different drink). By replacing 1/4 of the drink with milk, it improved the drink tremendously. The management also offered to make a new drink if I didn't like it, but I did so all is well. Overall: good experience, excellent food, great coffee, decent non-coffee options, possibly overpriced.

The Coffee House at the Grand: Coffee in the Theoretical Sense…read more There are places that serve coffee, places that understand coffee, and places that appear to have received a brief description of coffee from a passing stranger and decided they had enough information to proceed. The Coffee House at the Grand, unfortunately, landed somewhere in the third category during my visit. The coffee itself was subpar. Calling it weak would be generous. "Brown water" is perhaps less diplomatic, but considerably more accurate. It had the colour of coffee, occupied the appropriate sort of cup, and was apparently introduced to a coffee bean at some point in its journey, but flavour seemed to have missed the appointment entirely. A proper cup of coffee ought to have some character. It needn't leap onto the table and recite poetry, but one reasonably expects aroma, depth, richness, or at least some evidence that the beans had ambitions. This had none of those things. It was warm, brown, and liquid, which technically places it within shouting distance of coffee, but only in the same way that a puddle is within shouting distance of a swimming pool. The service did little to rescue matters. The atmosphere struck me as unfriendly, and the interaction lacked the professionalism one expects from a place trading on the appearance and vocabulary of a proper coffee house. There is no requirement that staff perform Broadway numbers while handing over a cappuccino, of course, but a little warmth, attentiveness, and basic hospitality are not extravagant demands. They are rather the point. That was perhaps the strangest part of the experience: the whole place felt less like a coffee house and more like an impersonation of one. The visual cues are there. The name is there. The equipment is presumably there. One half expects the next step to involve excellent coffee and pleasant service. Instead, the performance stops just before the important bits. It reminded me of building a pub, hanging a Guinness sign outside, installing a magnificent wooden bar, polishing every glass until it shines, and then serving everyone lukewarm tap water while looking mildly inconvenienced that they came in. There is enormous potential here because the concept itself works. A coffee house at a grand property should feel inviting. It should be the sort of place where one settles in for ten minutes and accidentally stays for forty. Coffee should smell like coffee before it reaches the table, taste like someone cared about making it, and be served by people who understand that hospitality is part of what the customer is purchasing. Instead, my experience was remarkably forgettable, except for the unfortunate fact that it was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Perhaps I caught them on an off day. Every business is entitled to one. But based on this visit, the Coffee House at the Grand needs rather less attention paid to looking like a coffee shop and considerably more attention paid to being one. At present, the coffee is brown water with excellent public relations.
