As I made my way to the restaurant, I was a little "nervous" that I wasn't going to the right place. Then I saw it. As soon as I entered, I knew I was on for a treat. I ordered chilaquiles along with some fajita on top. Jackpot. The food was great and came out quicker than I could ever expect. The wait staff were very attentive and polite. I ordered in mix English-Spanish before my waitress replied to me in English. While I was there, there was a Tejano music duo going table to table playing songs. I recognized some of the jams. A coworker who is a connoisseur of authentic Mexican food recommended this place. And since it's not a crazy distance from our office, we order from here every now & then. It's by far nothing fancy of an establishment, but the food is cooked as if from a sweet abuela's kitchen. To be honest, I would rather call-in an order for pickup than dine-in. Unless you reside in the neighborhood, you might get weird glances. But, the food (and price) are definitely worth the stop in. They don't skimp out, that's for sure... You get your dollar's worth every time! Some assembly required. I like to call it a build-a-meal... This place heaps generous portions of their menu selections onto your plate (or to-go boxes), you have to pile it high before shoving it into your eager mouth! Today, for example, on this colder than usual Houston day, I ordered a Sopa de Rez (Caldo). I got a deconstructed soup, with each item carefully packed in its own little container: the piping broth with vegetables (chayote, red potato, carrots, and cob corn), buttery tender beef shank pieces, rice, and (half a dozen!) perfectly chewy flour tortillas. I threw a little bit of everything into a bowl and even though I barely put a dent in it - wow did I enjoy it!!! Plenty for leftovers later... Heck yeah. Visiting from California in Houston; I was craving for carne asada and decided to look for a no too fancy place and found Los Charros. Previous reviews put this place with 4.5 so I wanted to see by myself, or taste by myself. I ordered the carne asada taco and al pastor. Not too fancy presented but as soon I bite it the flavor of this carne asada went all over indicating that was exactly what I was craving for. Full of flavor, tender and a very good portion of meat form$2.50, excellent price. Service was attentive and prompt. Ambiance, I will definitely work on that. I will recommend this carne asada tacos with a few add ons. Side order of guacamole Limes Chopped onions and cilantro With your respective beer. Food was great and the price was even better! We were in the area and got hungry, so we stopped here for lunch. We got here at 1pm on a Saturday and still found tables even though the parking lot was full. My husband got 3 tacos: barbacoa, pierna (pork leg) and lengua on corn tortillas. His favorite was the pierna (pork leg). I got a small caldo de res and taco de lengua. The caldo was delicious and beefy and there was so much beef in my soup I went into beef coma. The salsa was nice and spicy just like the one I grew up on. The one thing I was not a fan of was the vegetables in my caldo did not have the skin peeled off--the red potato is fine with the skin on and I can live with the carrot skin too and while I love chayote I do not like the skin on it when cooked so I was turned off by that. That's probably my only complaint. Otherwise, I enjoyed the generous portion of veggies and beef in my caldo! Definitely will be coming here for the soups when it gets cold again. The agua de Jamaica was the flavorful and very sweet. I definitely liked the corn tortillas more than the flour. We will be coming back soon. read more

Only been here a couple of times, but can say I like it. Good enough space, music not blaring & staff generally nice. Prices are right too. My recent visit was for breakfast. Huevos rancheros were very good. The sauce well seasoned without being salty. Tortillas were just thick enough. Beans & pappas tasty too. This go round it took me a sec to get my waitresses attention when asking for water or coffee refill. Literally walked past me 3 or 4 times; another waitress ended up bringing it to me. And no it wasn't a busy Saturday & I wasn't in a hurry. There was an unpleasant smell overtaking the joint. Not sure if pipe burst or what but it was pretty bad. I stuck it out for the food lol. I love dives, family run, hole in the wall, food truck stand type places. So its not coming from a snobby POV. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, but will be back. Decent sized restaurant on a side street, near my favorite mexican restaurant. They provide free queso with your chips and salsa. No lunch menu per se, just a list of specialty items on the 1st 2 pages of the 4 page menu. They offer 1 lunch special every weekday. I ordered the carne guisada (Monday's special) for $7.95. My colleague and I chose both the homemade flour and the homemade corn tortillas. The meal comes with tortillas, pico and guacamole. I enjoyed it, even if the guisada was a little on the salty side. They offer a few aguas frescas on the menu, so I ordered the melon which was pretty good, just had a lot of foam in it. Service was friendly and attentive. It's the typical Mexican restaurant of Houston. Very big menu selection and the food kicks ass. Very good food, huge shrimp cocktails. I don't ever look at how much things cost here, I just ball out, the tacos are that good here. Occasional mariachi or tejano/ norteño live music while you eat, if you like pot bellied old men playing the guitar or trumpet in your face, while you dip your chips in the salsa. Should have walked out when nacho cheese from a can that you get at WalMart was placed in front of me. Michelada was not spicy or even had a kick. Tasted mostly the beer. Flautas has shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese.... From a bag. My bf ordered two fajita tacos with avocado, grilled onions, and cilantro and a fajita Gordita. That definitely wasn't beef fajita. It was some kind of steak. Taco was plain. Had to ask for it to be corrected just to get it on the side and regular chopped onion. This is fast becoming my favorite Mexican Reatraunt. The fried tripas are excellent. Very Hardy serving of tripas, rice, beans and guacamole/salsa. The tortillas are just likes mom. The staff excellent and always with a smile. They are there to serve you, yet when busy they can get overwhelmed and come for table only once, but overall they are all great. The tables comes with chili cheese and warm salsa and chips. Can't say but it is a great place to eat for lunch or dinner..come on go try these fried tripas, you won't regret. I attempted to eat it and didn't like it. My boyfriend then mentioned it and she brought a menu pointing to the "special burritos" which isn't what I ordered from. She said "it's okay" yet continued to charge us for it. My boyfriend then said something to the cashier who was nice enough to remove it but seemed a bit annoyed at the same time.
