I came here because Newport really doesn't have a ton of options for happy hour. Well, I imagine most just hang out downtown or head off on a nice stroll to Hoboken. Anyhow, Los Cuernos is one of the few located conveniently on Washington Blvd. It's a Mexican Restaurant true-and-true, with a relatively tight bar area. The bar itself maybe seats about 10 and there are a few tables behind it. It's a bit dimly lit, but if the doors are open you can get a nice little breeze and even some sunlight. Anyhow, their happy hour specials ($5 for the beers on tap) is pretty good. You also get chips and salsa included so you can't ask too much more. Also, this is a rare Los Angeles bar (specially East LA) in NYC and definitely the only one in Jersey City (and probably NJ). That's quite rare. Service is horrible , specially because you go in for a drink and they expect you to have a full meal , it is also a bar so people can go in just for drinks . After a while they stopped coming to our table , I wanted to drink but apparently if you're not eating they don't need to pay attention to you . After being there for an hour and half my friend's Daugther arrived and they told us she couldn't stay because it was a bar ( even tho we were NOT seated at the bar . So we got up and went to the other aside where there's the regular restaurant tables . We came here for an early lunch. I'm not one for a sweet drink but this watermelon Margarita was a great refresher. I decided to go with the grilled chicken quesadilla. I've had the pleasure of dining at Los Cuernos twice now, once for a Wednesday evening dinner and the other for a small party held on the second floor. Lots of space for dining across two floors and upstairs has a small bar and restrooms. Staff was friendly, attentive, and had extreme patience (when bartending for the party). Both times our Food and drinks arrived quickly. The tacos (lots of options) and guacamole are great, as are the margaritas. The tamarind one is my favorite ever! On a Friday evening they had a live band where we danced until almost closing. Great crowd - everyone (of all ages) was there to dance and enjoy themselves. We stopped into Los Cuernos for a drink on a recent Saturday evening and were able to grab seats at the bar. The wobbly, broken-in stools were not the most comfortable, and, while the staff was nice, we received no beverage menus. I just opted for one of my favorite cocktails - a skinny, spicy margarita. I forgot to ask for no salt on the rim, but the bartender had not checked on my preference either. So, I received a hefty mouthful of salt. In addition, the drink was so strong that it was impossible to finish. My companion's standard spicy margarita was similarly too much, though he managed to get it down. I, instead, turned my attention to the delicious salsa and crispy tortilla chips. I enjoyed my meal it was nice to finally find an authentic Mexican place in the area. I feel as if many places do Mexican cuisine sub par giving you unauthentic chips and food. To be honest, it wasn't the best experience. I came on a Monday evening. The place was pretty empty. The food came out very quickly. The service was okay. The quality of the food was not the best though. I got a churasco type steak, which was extremely fatty and was covered up with onions. The guac was tasty but they chips were all broken up. My friend also got there a little early and they wouldn't seat him. They all got the regular margaritas and I got the watermelon margarita. BIg mistake. It literally taste like straight tequila, no watermelon at all. It was so bad that the guy had to switch with me. And he had a hard time drinking it too. By the end, he was tipsy. The regular margaritas are way better and palatable. I think they also got food it was just chips and guac and a quesadilla. If you want a decent meal for a great price (especially in JC), definitely try this place out. The food wasn't anything spectacular but I enjoyed everything. This restaurant is really big and has a lot of seating, it's clean and the decor is nice. The music is very loud and you'll have to shout, I barely heard the waiter half the time. Speaking of which, service was excellent, everything came out quickly and there were no errors. We tried the margaritas (pineapple and watermelon). Both were good, I preferred the pineapple, it tasted more fresh (the waiter said they actually purée fresh pineapple and add it to the drink). The watermelon one tasted like a jolly rancher, which to some might be appealing. The potato flautas were really good, nice and crispy, I've had very similar flautas elsewhere (maybe it's hard to mess them up?). The beans were delicious, better than other places I've tried. And the rice was just rice, nothing special. The steak tacos were pretty good, the steak was over cooked and on the saltier side but it was still good. The sauce it came with is extremely spicy! Be careful when trying it (I dipped too much and regretted it immediately not knowing it was spicy). The quesadilla was so delicious, I ordered it with chorizo and it had a very subtle spearmint flavor, which I love and use a lot in my cooking. At this point I was quite full but we really wanted to try the skirt steak. And this dish was about $15 which is amazing because I've had gross steak that was over $50 before. And you get a tortilla, guacamole, beans, rice, an enchilada, and salsa. This is a great value for the flavor and the quality of the steak (tasted great the next day too). Highly recommend trying this because each element was delicious. For dessert, the waiter recommended the tres leches, this was such a great way to end the meal, it wasn't overly sweet like a lot of tres leches and the peaches really complimented the cake. Los Cuernos is beautiful. It is right on the waterfront and the sunset was gorgeous! The staff and management were wonderful. I was not impressed with their happy hour drinks. We ordered margaritas but their mix was really off. I expected better margaritas at a Mexican restaurant even if they weren't using a top-shelf tequila. I was quite disappointed. I ordered the enchiladas which were only okay, so I don't know about the other menu items. Our server Fabi was wonderful as were the other staff members. I'm happy to be exploring Mexican food in Jersey City, and Los Cuernos is another delicious option! The staff was kind and welcoming! They were also helpful when it came to questions about the menu. If you're vegetarian or vegan, be careful as many of the salsas have chicken broth in them or other items have something related to animals. The free chips actually come with salsa that has chicken broth, which we did not know until we were asking questions about the menu. However, the menu does indicate which items are vegetarian, so you should be good with those! I found everything I ordered to be flavorful! I would have preferred the horchata to be less sweet, but it balanced well with the salty chips. The steak in the cecina was tasty, but a bit too chewy for me to enjoy to the fullest. The chips with the green salsa were delicious , but I wish I ate them faster because the bottom ones became soggy. I really enjoyed all of the salsas and I regret not ordering guacamole as I'm sure that would have been great too. Overall, Los Cuernos is a tasty place for Mexican food, though the menu can be confusing. If you have any dietary restrictions, be sure to ask first before eating/ordering.
