My first visit to Los P was definitely a mixed experience like some other reviewers have said. Right off the bat, when we asked to go ahead and get our drinks, the waitress bizarely got an attitude, though she immediaty pullled it back. Then we discovered that both sets of silverware had old food encrusted on them - not a promising start. I ordered a beer on tap which was not cold and neither was the mug. But... the food came out quickly, the portions were good and everything was nice and hot. At that point I might have been tempted to give them four stars in spite of the earlier problem. But literally throughout the entire meal we had to fight flies left and right. You could not take two bites without swinging at them. It really was an atrocious issue and severely distracted from what should have been a nice dinner. Decided to put off cooking dinner .Went to Los Portales Thursday night after a long day at work. As soon as we were seated, several flies started swarming us. There were 7-10 by the time we ordered. Bothering us and fixating on the top of the ( booth) seat. We had to keep swatting them with napkins and hands to keep them out of the salsa and white sauce. One actually fell off my shoulder onto the table- disgusting! We flagged staff to make our meal to go. Once home- the food was overcooked and flavorless. Not doing that again. Restaurants should do what they can to control pests. There were way too many flies ! Not sure if you can see them in my pic. read more

The menu has been updated, prices have increased. I don't feel as if the recipes are the same either, maybe it was different because it was a different cook but my food was not as good and cost more. And the cheese dip! Seems way smaller than the previous large and it's a whopping 11.99?! The plates have also been changed, they do not fit on the table comfortably. With the round dishes there was empty space on the tables, now with the large square plates the entire surface of the table was covered. I'm actually really disappointed, this was my favorite local place to eat. I don't believe we will be eating here again, it's not worth the price anymore. read more

We came here for a late lunch/early dinner to celebrate one of my coworkers, and our group of ten was seated together comfortably. The server was friendly and attentive, quickly bringing out our drinks along with chips and dip. The menu had plenty of options to choose from, and I decided on the Veracruz special, while my coworkers ordered dishes like the chimichanga, birria tacos, and burritos. My meal was flavorful, and the chorizo dip was definitely a highlight. We love Mexican food and we have had some very wonderful Mexican Restaurant experiences . This one not wonderful! The amount of food you get is actually good for the money. I placed a to-go order of shrimp nachos (chips packaged separately) and a side of rice. When I arrived home and opened the bag, I noticed that something had leaked. Upon removing the items, I could see that the shrimp were "swimming" in liquid which spilled out of the edge of the container. The shrimp dish had the consistency of soup with huge chunks of soggy tomatoes, green peppers, and onions; the shrimp had no seasoning on them, and there was no cheese. I had gotten this dish before and it was delicious and very flavorful (sautéed shrimp, fajita-style vegetables and queso blanco atop warm chips). I have eaten here many times and have always enjoyed my food but I was so disappointed in this meal. It was a waste of $24.00. read more

We ordered food here for take out a year ago and I was not impressed at the time. Yesterday, when my family wanted to have Mexican food, we decided to try again with this place. I'm so disappointed that we did that! Two of our four entrees were not prepared correctly. The Enchilada Blanca had absolutely nothing inside the shells. They were supposed to have one chicken, one beef and one cheese enchilada and all three were cheese. At least I am guessing they were all prepared with cheese because they were all flat! My Border Burrito which was supposed to have ribeye steak inside was inedible. I cut the burrito in half finding a big flat piece of meat that I had to remove, trim a bunch of fat off just to eat it. Well, that was half of the portion and in my opinion should have been chopped steak with no big hunks of fat inside. Inside of a burrito? Yuck! Whoever was the "chef" that day was being lazy. The manager better train their cooks how to cook properly and prepare the food according to the description on the menu. Speaking of a menu, we had trouble with actually finding a menu online. We had to look at some other review for blurry photographs in order to call in an order! That should have been the first indication that this was not going to go well. We will never return again. Honestly the first time we ate here we didn't like this place at all. But we gave it another try and let me tell you Da Bomb! Their salsa and white sauce are amazing. We have been craving Mexican food for weeks and have made a tradition during the pandemic to support local restaurants for our Friday dinners. I work near here so it was easy to pick up on my way home. I called in the order as I left work and they said it would be ready in 10 minutes. That's about how long it took to get there and it was waiting when I walked in! The only thing I had to wait for were our drinks (Sangrita and a daiquiri) so they were still cold. I did realize I had gotten shrimp and rice instead of chicken when I got to the car, and when I went back in they apologized and brought the chicken and rice out to my car in just a couple minutes. It all smelled amazing on the ride home. My fajitas Veracruz (chicken and shrimp) were delicious though I wish they'd had just a bit more spice (easily fixable with my taco sauce). The fresh guac was perfect as an addition to them. Also they have the white dip along with the salsa for chips! My sangrita was tasty but VERY strong - definitely got my money's worth there. Mom has the strawberry daiquiri which was fantastic, as was her Pollo Monterrey. Dad got the chicken and rice which he enjoyed. Definitely can't wait to come back. A couple desserts caught my eye but because they had ice cream it wouldn't survive my drive home. I'll try those when we are allowed to dine in again! read more

I like this Mexican restaurant more than the others in Gloucester/Mathews, but there are a few things that could be improved. After several visits I noticed that when they refill the salsa or chips they take the salsa bowl/chip basket from the table. That's a health code violation, but what bugs me more is that I don't want them to take the chips I'm currently eating. We ask for more before we run out because it takes a while for them to bring more. Most of our food was good, but my moms wasn't and all they did was offer to bring something else(we were ready to leave at that point). She should not have had to pay for her meal. She ordered the shrimp taco salad and it looked good at first, but after she ate a little of it...it was very watery...like soup. They have good specials and drinks. I do hope they stop taking salsa bowls that people have been eating out of to be refilled...gross. read more

Every time we had visited the chimmies I got were cooked differently. First time they had no shredded beef so I got the seafood one. It was way over cooked and the seafood used was not the freshest. The second time I ordered the chimmies the pulled beef was insanely spicy. I am not a spicy hot food person to begin with but this was overboard with hot seasoning. I traded it for the pulled pork, barely any taste at all and the pulled pork was greasy. My husband also has had a couple of different dishes but nothing to write home about. if you have a party over 4 there is not a lot of options for seating. they will do their best to stuff you into a booth, even when it is obvious there is only enough space between the seat and table for Olive Oyle. The staff spoke halting English and understood even less. Our drink orders were messed up from the start, and our food which came out 1hours after we arrived. people who were waiting to be seated after us, sat, ate and left before we received our food. The food when it arrived was played wrong with entre's arriving with the incorrect sides. We never received some items we asked for such as salsa, and other condiments. We have eaten here other times and it just depends on who is working out front and in the back as to what experience you have. read more

Amazing lunch. Probably my new favorite dish there. Great taste and generous portion. I often find myself setting the bar for Mexican food high as I am from Texas and great Mexican food meant everything from dinner at my neighbors house (who were Mexican and made the best fresh tortillas) to fine dining establishments. Let me tell you- I'm from Newport News and we will be driving out here for Mexican from now on. This place is that good. Do yourself a favor and get the cheesecake chimichangas for dessert. Don't let the outdoor appearance stop you from going in. It's nestled in a small shopping center and doesn't look like much from the outside but is nice and comfortable on the inside. It's also very clean. And the staff are all incredibly nice and attentive. The salsa is super fresh and delicious, the white sauce tastes great, the chips are warm and crunchy and even the queso is amazing. Food wise- my son got the seafood chimichangas (one fried, one soft) and it was soo good that he started clapping lol he has literally never done that My husband got the seafood fajitas and I got the chicken and steak and we split it. Both were very very good and seasoned well. Also, the shrimp were delicious and they were not the small little shrimp that you normally find at most Mexican restaurants- they were medium sized and really good. We will def be back! read more

Food was amazing the first time going months ago. Since its was Cinco de Mayo I desired authentic Mexican meal. Called around 7pm, informed 30 minute wait. Okay, I didn't mind since it must be super busy. However, I got there at 730pm and there were people standing around outside. ( Can't go inside business due to Cov 19 pandemic) I walked up and ask someone why they were standing outside. There's is a line about 15 people waiting. These people were ALL waiting to receive their food. I joined the line too. After 21 mins waiting I received my meal. All to go orders packaged and ready sitting there getting cold.
