Looks like a hole in the wall but when you walk in, you're hit with a good vibe and Mexican decor. I live in Phoenix and was visiting family. We have pretty decent Mexican in AZ but I was more impressed with the food here. Presentation was good, drinks were good and food tasted wonderful. Service was spot-on. Prior to my visit last week, I was reluctant to try Los Portales because of some of the reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, the salsa is a little bit plain, but the chips were quite good and the combo hit the spot. The burrito, rice and beans were really tasty. The place inside is bigger than it looks from the outside and has fun decor and furnishings. There's a small area with a nicely stocked bar. Service was attentive and polite. My server fixed up a terrific Coronarita, and took extra effort to put fruit on the sides and an umbrella. The taste was really topnotch. If you've never had one, you should. Just make sure you have a designated driver (it's a beer turned upside down in a margarita). Prices were cheaper than I'm used to in the Indianapolis area, so that was a nice surprise. It has always been hit and miss at best. Today, the so called salsa came to the table and we walked out. I t was thick like tomato paste, tasted like tomato paste. It will be a long time before I visit again. It's sad, they could have a booming business if would just have better food. I would never write anything like this if it was not 100% true I have had lunch or dinner there on several occasions and had always enjoyed the food and the service I have been there so many times the employees know my face when I arrive. Back on May 15th I went in there with my wife and I had the beef fajita lunch and she had something else later that night I could not go very far from the restroom and that lasted for 2 days honestly the food at the resturaunt was the last thing I thought was causing it to happen because my wife was just fine Yesterday my wife and myself went into the resturaunt for lunch and I once again ordered the beef fajita lunch and she ordered something completly different Then around 5pm last night we was both spending alot of time in the restroom and it has continued into today I honestly love Tex-Mex food and enjoyed it at Los Portales however after the last 2 situations I am going to find me another resturaunt in the area it sure ainnt worth what we have gonne thru in the last 12 hours read more

Very Americanized, so don't worry Tipton! It's not *that* international. Disappointingly so. I'm still on the quest to find Tijuana fish tacos in Indiana. Excellent food, just less authentic than I was hoping for, but 5 stars for bravely springing up in this little farm town. This is why I'll visit themagain, next time I'm in Tipton. Salsa is puréed Into baby food almost. Chicken AND beef not seasoned at all. Beans obviously came out of a can. Thoroughly disappointing Food tastes terrible everything seems like it came out of a can or they cooked it fastest possible nothing was good about it other then my date will never ever be visiting this place again and to top it all off my stomach now hurts. Do not go here. Do not waste your money. You have better luck going to taco bell. read more

3.5 stars. There is no half here - so bene of the doubt. Seems to be typical strip center Mexi joint catering to homogenized gringo taste buds. Kinda like been to one, been to them all. (decor - best characterized as Tex-Mex Trytohard, but this is Tipton afterall) SOP - chips, salsa, drink orders. We selected 2 from the lunch menu. Chicken Quesadilla platter and Chick Chimi. Portions were good size. Served piping hot and pretty quick. They were good. Nothing overly noteworthy and overall good value for the buck. Not sure if I would pay the prices on the dinner menu as I assume same food - but will probably give a try again. In hindsight - shoulda got the carnitas. $18 all in. read more

I try never to leave a bad review for places but this was awful. I had been told good things about this place so we gave it a shot. We got there and they were pretty busy (Friday evening). We were seated quickly in the very last booth. The booth next to us had tv's/mounts or something stacked up in it, like a storage closet. We were never greeted by anyone but the host who seated us. Finally, 20 minutes later, the guy sitting in the booth next to us had to wave someone down just to give us chips and salsa. Still no drink order or anything. The bus boy came over and took drink order. Another 5 minutes later the waitress finally comes over and simply says "ready to order?". No "hello" or "my name is..." or anything. 15 minutes later food comes out. Mediocre, at best (shrimp was super tough, guac really salty, enchiladas almost seemed like they were microwaved). Did not end up seeing waitress again until well after we were done eating and a manager (or whoever) happened to walk by and ask if we were doing ok. Told him we were waiting on the check. Waitress finally comes over with the check and we were able to leave, thankfully. First and last time we'll visit there. read more

My sister and I meet here as it is a half way point between our homes. The food is pretty good, the problem is the service or lack there of! We went this past Fri. BEFORE the supper rush, we got our food, no check back, the waitress rushed over to put our check on the table. This has happened on our last three visits, never the same wait person.....they just don't have quality or even good service. Stopped in the other night. I have to say I was very disappointed. It was slow for a place like this, they screwed up the orders somewhat, and the food was just...blah. It was packed in there, and I really can't see why other than that there are no other options in Tipton. What you would expect for an Local Mexican restaurant. Everything was tasty, generous portions. I got the bean dip and it was a HUGE bowl! My friends and I met for lunch in Tipton and decided on this place. Despite the bad reviews, we were really pleased. Pretty, colorful tables and chairs. Baby/child friendly. Good service. This was the worst food And overall dining experience I have ever had. I'm not kidding. The chips and salsa were decent, although the man that brought them to our table was running (literally) to our table, sweating profusely, and splashed salsa and a few chips all over the table. No apology, no clean up. They took our drink order within minutes of the chip delivery, which seemed promising. We also ordered bean dip at that time. Our waiter brought out our drinks and dip and then took our dinner order. That would be the last time we would see our waiter for the next 90 minutes. We ran out of our first basket of chips but still had bean dip. No refills. We emptied our glasses. No refills. 5 different waiters walked by our table over the next 30 minutes (never our original waiter), looked at our empty glasses and chip basket and kept walking. Finally we waved a different waiter down and requested refills. Then we noticed multiple waiters pointing and talking about our table, shrugging their shoulders as though no one knew who was supposed to be waiting on our table. After an hour, they finally brought out the entrees. Unfortunately, they were the wrong entrees. We informed the man who brought the food (still not our original waiter) that this was not our order and he took it away. 5-10 minutes later, they finally brought our order... And let me just tell you: it was absolute atrocity! I ordered a chile relleno, an enchilada, and a bean taco. The whole plate, including the hard shell taco, was covered in white cheese sauce that had been setting long enough to form a kind of skin on the top. Atop the cheese skin were pools of yellow grease. The taco was mushy from being covered in the "cheese." I'm pretty sure the beans in the taco had been sitting in the pot for 4 days before they reached the table. Despite the appearance, I held on to hope that maybe it would taste better than it appeared. ....Nope! It was inedible. My husband's food was no better. Honestly, at that point I could not even be mad. I was actually laughing because I was in awe of how bad everything was. After we sat there for a while, not eating, our original waiter reappeared long enough to bring us a bill and offer us a box. We declined both. What a joke! read more
