I've been curious about goat tacos ever since I did the write up about Birria after eating at Kike's. I planned my trip to Los Temos thinking I was about to try something unique in Salem, OR out of all places. What I didn't realize as I pulled into Los Temos' crowded parking lot is that I was about to walk into foodie paradise. Los Temos Taqueria is a family-operated Mexican restaurant specializing in Michoacan-style Birria tacos and burritos. Los Temos is located on the far end of Portland Road, on the opposite side of I-5 facing Keizer Station. Los Temos is the only establishment I've been to in Salem that serves braised goat tacos. Los Temos also ticks all the boxes that would qualify it as any Yelper's "best kept secret" restaurant. The restaurant itself is a converted diner, with remnants of its old incarnation still visible from the décor and the commercial size coffee brewers in the back. Most of the patrons of the restaurant hail from the area where the food is "originally from"; I was the only person in the restaurant that didn't speak Spanish. Further, it's also out in the middle of debatably nowhere, not quite in Salem, not quite in Keizer or Chemawa. In other words, you don't just "accidentally" end up here, you have to plan some part of your day around eating here. The food here is also distinctively "authentic." By authentic, I mean that it's not over-seasoned like food from establishments that cater to the "local" population. Every element of every dish served here looks and tastes irrefutably "homemade." It's basically comfort food, but in its purest uncompromised, unadulterated form. Some of the best Mexican food I've had in my life required assembly. If you've ever been to an (unlicensed) taco stand out in East or South Central LA, you know what I'm referring to. The reason why tourists tend to complain(?) that real Mexican food from Mexico tastes "bland" or "different" is because the local cuisine in any country is usually prepared with the preconceived notion that the local populace will be eating the dishes frequently, or even daily. Your taste buds and your olfactory receptors are less strained from eating food that is lightly seasoned compared to something that's just dripping in sauce. This is why people can eat ungodly amounts of mashed potatoes and peas during Thanksgiving, but limited amounts of turkey, stuffing, etc. Anyway, back to food that require assembly. The Tacos at Los Temos remind me of LA street tacos, but with birria braised meat. The taco shells are fresh, warm, and soft. Just like how abuelita used to make. Or so I would imagine. I tried two Birria Tacos de Chivo, and a Birria Taco de Rez. As beef is king, de Rez is what I recommend anyone going to this this establishment for the first time should try, but I was surprised at how tender and equally flavorful the de Chivo was. The de Chivo does carry a more distinctive spice-laden flavor (cumin, cloves, cinnamon) and a very slight gamey flavor toward the end as expected. Long story short, the goat isn't something I would necessarily want to eat every day, but it's worth trying if you're looking for something different. TL;DR for Salemites that are familiar with the Mexican food scene in the area: in terms of Birria Tacos, Kike's is to Aiberto's what Los Temos is to La Fondita #2. The parking lot is tiny, so try to carpool if possible.

Wow. Just wow. This place is now our new favorite place to get tacos. The food is really really fresh, and soooo good. It definitely is homemade cooking. We got our tacos to go and they put them on paper plates with foil and provide you with a bag of salsas and onions with cilantro. If you're ever in the mood for good tacos and in the area, this is your place!

Los Temos takes "home cooking" to the next level. The restaurant is situated on the side of the road in a house like building with tables throughout a series of rooms. On weekends it's packed with families, a line out the door, vendors in front, and even live musicians! Food options consist of various grilled/marinated mexican meats - birria (goat stew) is what they're known for and available on weekends. It's a rich, spicy, salty broth with tender shredded goat meat. Not for the faint of heart but oh man is it tasty. Food comes with a the essentials - a plate of limes, onions, and cilantro and every kind of hot sauce you could want. My favorite (and they have giant tubs of this) was a spicy chili paste like sauce served in small sauce dishes like the ones at asian restaurants. Whether you want something sweet or alcoholic, Los Temos has you covered beverage-wise. It may be difficult to get a special drink like a michelada during busy times but they have all kinds of Mexican sodas and beers ready to go. If you're craving an horchata or my personal favorite a Jamaica agua fresca, it's a great light, not too sweet way to wash down your tacos or bowl of birria. The vibe is exactly how you'd expect a house packed full of people eating spicy foods amidst Spanish and accordion melodies to be. Not for everyone, but SO much fun if that appeals to you. The banda circles around table to table with a long list of songs they can play and giant groups of people cycle in and out because yes the food is that good. I'd recommend sitting in the front of the restaurant for the fun/music and the back if you have a large group. If you're looking for a spicy way to spend your weekend or just some delicious authentic Mexican food and music, Los Temos is the place for you.

Before the meal is even started, this arrives... Classy!

They close at 530... Keep that in mind. Excellent food, good prices, no frills environment, everything home made. Great family owned authentic restaurant.

Two-Star Review for La Hacienda Real (A poetic saga of…read morechips, dips, and unmet dreams) I walked into La Hacienda Real, hungry and bold, But those chips were stale not warm, not gold. The bean dip tasted canned, the salsa was bland, Not a spark, not a kick, not a mariachi band. Chips and salsa should sing, make your taste buds feel alive But this batch barely whispered, "Hey... we tried." I ordered chicken enchiladas, beans joining the ride, Asked for salsa or hot sauce, hoping flavor would collide. They brought a tiny sampler cup, small but supreme That little shot of fire? Man, that stuff was the dream. Serve that as your house salsa big bowls, not petite Quit hiding the only thing that actually brings heat. Then came the bill cheap enough to shock, Like bargain-bin prices straight outta the clearance stock. So if you're a senior citizen, avoiding spicy thrills, Or you're rolling on a budget and just want full plates and refills, La Hacienda Real hits "cheap," but it misses the taste You'll get fed, sure, but man... it feels like a waste. I wanted to love it truly, with all my heart But those chips didn't crunch, and the salsa had no spark. I've had legendary dips, heroic salsas, chips steaming hot and great This was none of that... just a budget-friendly plate. So is it crappy, or just cheap? I'm honestly torn But next time I'll chase flavor somewhere better reborn.

(#1) For years when this taco cart operated along Portland Road (#2) it was low on the radar but known in the community. Fast forward a few years, it's not quite a brick & mortar, but a space for patrons to sit inside to enjoy their food while everything is cooked outside on a cart. The format isn't for everyone (#3), but it's right up my alley. Beyond the colorful murals along the interior and spacious seating, this is still very much a dive. The place is open typically at night and the cloud of grease that permeates the room from all the fatty meats being grilled up. The ventilation is questionable and the seating (fold up chairs and plastic tables) is hardly glamorous. I don't know if I'd have it any other way. For some folks, seeing certain taco meats sitting in a pool of lard / fat / questionable liquid might be an eyesore but once the grilling begins it's a new ballgame. I enjoy almost all the meats, whether it's their famous al pastor sitting on a tromp with a pineapple on top, or their variety of cecina, carnitas, cabeza (cheek, mainly), barbacoa, and asada. There's no guarantee of what they'll have on any given night, so I'm usually good with whatever they have available. The charred grill is also the same place for their tortillas, which are also fried in said lard, and give off this smokiness that might not be everyone's cup of tea. I think their barbacoa, which is chivo (#4) style, is really the best thing they have. The meat is incredibly tender, juicy, and full of flavor. It completely encapsulates their namesake in "ricos tacos" as one of their signature items. As always, it is cash only and speaking Spanish is a must. I'm not saying it's the best taqueria in the city, but for late night eats, it's certainly one of ones to beat. __________ (#1) Aka "The Godfather" (#2) Twas another time: https://www.yelp.com/biz/taqueria-el-padrino-salem (#3) Real talk: Most folks in Salem will likely never go to a place like this. My first impression was positive. The establishment was clean, brightly colored, and filled with natural light. The dining area is relatively small, with a modest number of tables and chairs, but it felt comfortable rather than cramped. The atmosphere was casual and welcoming. The employees were friendly, and the service was notably fast without feeling rushed. I ordered the chicken burrito for $8.99, genuinely unsure what that price point would translate to in size or quality. The answer was immediate. This was a substantial burrito, roughly 10 inches long, and packed from end to end with filling. Not one of those burritos that gives the illusion of size but turns out to be mostly tortilla. Once opened, the cross-section told the story clearly: generous meat, a good mix of fresh ingredients, and a burrito that looked thoughtfully assembled rather than carelessly thrown together. The flavor matched the appearance. It was hearty, satisfying, and exactly what one hopes for in a burrito. The chicken was flavorful, the ingredients worked well together, and nothing about it felt skimpy. The tortilla had a light browning to it, which added both texture and visual appeal. Just as important, it was wrapped exceptionally well. For a burrito this full, that matters. It held together while eating, keeping the filling where it belonged rather than turning into a mess halfway through. Another detail worth mentioning was the sauce selection. Having multiple options from mild to hot allowed for some customization, and they were worth sampling. They added another layer to the meal rather than feeling like an afterthought. What stood out most was the overall value. Quality, quantity, speed, and price do not always align this well, but here they did. For $8.99, the portion was generous, the food was flavorful, and the service was efficient. Add in the fact that Alberto's is open 24 hours a day, and it becomes even more appealing. In the end, what impressed me most was not simply the size of the burrito, but the fact that the entire experience felt solid across the board: clean setting, friendly staff, fast service, fair pricing, and food that delivered. After driving past this place for years, I can say it was worth finally stopping in. I would return.
