Our server was informative on all the specials which was helpful in making our decisions. We decided to sit outside which had the most stunning view of the sunset. It was bad luck for us that there was an event across the street at the Kauffman that night, because the restaurant was very busy to start. It was chill when the event crowd cleared. For such a big party, the service was good. We had one server the whole time and she did great taking the orders and getting food and drinks to the table. I don't think there were any wrong orders or mixups at all. That says a lot for a big group. The food was decent. The combinations were the best deal on the menu. My friend had her birthday party here on a weekday after work and it was surprisingly not too packed. We were able to snatch 5 seats with no problem. A friend of mine recommended Los Tules some time ago. After two recent visits I wish I'd partaken earlier. I generally avoid discussions about "authenticity," finding them fruitless and often ill-informed. Los Tules has a real feel - a KC Mexican feel. The vibe is bustling but welcoming. Not so loud, and not as windy since they have a canopy/tent back there. Our server was great; busy for sure and she managed her customers well. Food was outstanding: I had 2 à la carte chicken enchiladas -- since I was going back to the Kauffman, I didn't want leftovers, but still probably should have order just one! S much delicious food. I've always been curious about this place. I've driven by it ever since I moved here 16 years ago. I finally gave it a try, and I'm so glad I did! I used to feel intimidated about where to park. Street parking on Broadway is usually available after 6 PM or between 9 AM and 4 PM, but it's a bit limited. There is also a parking lot in the back, which seems to be for restaurant use only, just be sure to check the signs. The back patio is absolutely charming! There's this beautiful, lit-up tree that adds so much ambiance. If the weather is nice, I highly recommend dining outside alfresco. I ordered the carnitas, and wow they were incredibly tender, juicy, and full of flavor. I went with double rice instead of beans because I was heading next door to watch a movie at Stray Cat Film Center and didn't want to risk any bean-related regrets (iykyk!). Overall, it's a super great spot. Very busy and lively on a Friday night, which just added to the fun atmosphere. I really enjoyed it and will definitely be back! read more

I finally got the chance to try Los Tules on Broadway, and it did not disappoint! The food was yummy! I had a chimichanga, and my friend had enchiladas. We also shared an incredible dip with beans, cheese, red sauce, and chorizo. I can't remember the name, but it was very good! The drinks were just as impressive. She said nope, and moved on to my friend. What saved my experience here was that the chicken enchiladas were pretty flavorful and the portion size left me with lunch the following day, so a good meal for the value. Don't pass up on Los Tules! This spot is great for late night eats and hangouts if you're in the area. This place gets a bad for a whole slew of reasons. Some say it's not authentic enough or good enough or the service is slow--look, Los Tules is not a fancy place, you seat yourself, and it gets busy at times, but there will be a table available at 9:30pm and they'll serve you some hot, juicy, crispy carnitas in a matter of minutes. You'll even get a beautiful view of the Kaufmann Center on your way in. The service can be slow at times if the place is absolutely packed, but it usually isn't. Here are the gotchas: - The food is somewhere between more authentic than K-Macho's and less authentic than most of the places on Southwest Blvd - The entrees can get spendy between the price and the 12% sales tax rate. I don't know why it's 12% either, but that's what we're working with. The price and varying quality of the entrees is the primary reason why I went for 3 stars rather than 4. - I would recommend sticking to the a-la-carte menu and avoiding the rice and beans, which aren't as high quality as one would hope. Overall, Los Tules isn't my first pick for Mexican food, but it's a solid pick for late night bites with a few friends. read more

Happy hour House Margs until 8pm was a nice surprise when we walked in for dinner. Plenty of space for large parties so we didn't have to wait for a table. The house Marg was a little sweet for my taste and the salsa flavors felt more Italian than Mexican to me, but that's just one girl's opinion. As it was my first visit to Kansas City, I was surprised to see so many Mexican restaurants and was also excited to see so many Mexican restaurants. I was there for a conference, so we stopped here on our lunch break. It was your typical, hole in the wall Mexican place with brightly colored tables and classic Mexican fair. I had the Sangria (which was delightfully strong) and the cheese enchiladas. My only complaint is that their red sauce had been stewed with meat, which as a vegetarian, I was not expecting. To be fair, it wasn't listed as a vegetarian item, but this was the first time I've ever had meat in my enchilada sauce. Other than that, the food was good but not spicy, and the tortilla chips plentiful. If you're at the convention center for an event, this is a solid lunch spot. read more

Man. This place is so mid. I'm completely shocked at how crowded it is and how many people like this place. The food was sort of ok. The drinks were absolutely horrendous. First I had the sangrita- on the rocks margarita mixed with sangria- it legitimately tasted like cough medicine, and it had hardly any ice in it. I've never sent a drink back in my life but this was too bad to drink. I figured it was the margarita mix that tasted bad so I got a frozen margarita in its place, since some places use different mixes for the frozen and the rocks margaritas. The frozen margarita was also bad. I couldn't even drink half of it. My friend had the skinny margarita. It was also not good, but it at least didn't taste like medicine- it tasted like watered down tequila and lime with no sugar at all. We won't be back. Ever. read more

Visited los Tules last night. I had something similar to a chimichanga. Lots of flavors. Tasted really good. My fiancé had chile stuffed with shrimps. He really liked it. They serve big portions. We could probably share one next time. However, my meal gave me terrible heartburn. The establishment is old. Needs some updates but is in a good location with parking in the back. Stopped in before a KC Symphony concert on a Friday night since it's right across the street. This place got pretty hoppin around 6 pm, with people waiting outside for around ~20 mins for a table. Seems like a good place to bring family and friends for some tasty Mexican food! Food was pretty tasty, nothing super special. I got carne asada tacos that came with rice and beans and a nice tomatillo salsa with some spice. Everything was reasonably priced. The house margarita is a radioactive color green, but both the margaritas and the sangria are both tasty and strong. (Drink deals during happy hour on weeknights!) This is definitely a place to catch a buzz before walking across the street to the Kauffman Center. The parking situation isn't ideal. Your best bet is to find street parking around the restaurant or across Broadway. read more

My husband decided we needed their queso dip so he was planning on ordering a carryout meal. We arrived and the place was busy, but they were enforcing social distancing, supplies sanitizer and required masks. He got a table last minute instead. The chips and salsa were mediocre but we did really enjoy the espinaca dip. I also appreciated the large portion size of the dip. Can't go wrong with more melted cheese! I had a chimi chava (los Tules' chimichanga) and we satisfied. The portion size was HUGE but great for next day leftovers. Our party tried a variety of different entres and everyone was pleased overall. To summarize, if I was in the mood for tacos or a chimichanga and I happened to be in the area, I would eat at Los Tules again. However, I don't think I'd seek it out otherwise. read more

Pretty average mexican place especially compared to some of KC's other gems. It was packed on a Wednesday night which was a good sign and we luckily snatched a table. Happy hour was going on so we did the $6 house margaritas and they were not good at all. Just tasted like straight margarita mix. I did the Chile Verde as my entree and it was very good and spicy. The meat was perfectly tender and the corn tortilla were the best. The rice was good but the beans had no flavor whatsoever.
