Food was great but the House Margarita wasn't. Why do Kansas City bartenders make these drinks sickly sweet? "House sour" tasted like a powdered mix. Not how a real marg should be. Two words: COCONUT MARGARITA! that alone gives this place the 5 star rating. The service was incredible and the dishes were really unique and flavorful. I see this as a fantastic spot to grab drinks and apps, but to bear in mind that the portions are maybe a bit smaller than your average casual mexican spot, but they really pack in the flavor. We tried the street corn dip, elote deviled eggs (so worth the hype) and some nachos. For two of us, we left feeling great especially since we had the complimentary chips and salsa. Service was amazing, but the food was just.. meh. Got the dips with queso and guac, and shrimp tacos. Guac has candied/honey jalepenos which just made it taste like they were trying to do something different and original, but I would have preferred a regular Guac. Loved their chips, though! Very thick. Shrimp tacos weren't that great. Not seasoned well, bland... it comes with a side of beans and rice. Rice was mixed with a chili oil, which just tasted different, but in a confusing way. Other than forgetting my wallet at home and having a minor panic attack on how I was going to pay my tab... my Crossroads Cantina experience was fantastic. Starting with a perfect margarita that was so wonderfully fruity I could have been fooled that it was a daiquiri. We added 2 dips to compliment the complimentary chips and salsa; Green Chili Queso - thick and creamy and Sikil Pak - a Mayan "hummus"made from ground roasted pumpkin seeds, tomatoes, peppers... earthy, rich and unique. The perfect trifecta for dipping the large chips. We then split an order of Portabella tacos. Large slices of the grilled mushrooms on corn tortillas with roasted veggies. I then added a bit of our two side dishes - Jicama Slaw and Street Corn and a dollop of queso to elevate the bar for ridiculously amazing taste sensations. Great service and wonderful upscale atmosphere. PS. I was able to call a good friend and have him pay the bill over the phone, since I hadn't updated my Google wallet with my new debit card. Whew! Came here for happy hour & got a couple of Margaritas. Very good! Not a wide variety of food options so I'm not sure if my review is totally fair. I'll update it when I go for a meal. Great open atmosphere. Servers and staff were all very nice. I just wasn't crazy about the food. I had a chicken enchilada which was kind of dry. Could have used more sauce. read more

We visited Crossroads Cantina for drinks. I wanted to stop by because the patio looks so tropical and inviting. We sat at the bar, which was full or reserved signs when we arrived, which apparently was to stop people from not stopping at the host stand first before sitting at the bar? Strange. The decor is nice, but the service the at the bar definitely left something to be desired. It seemed like the 2 bar tenders were arguing, which was uncomfortable. To top it off, my drinking partner asked for beer in a glass and instead of pouring it in the glass, one of the bartenders just sat the glass and the beer on the bar, twice, not bothering to pour the beer in the glass. My margarita was also too sweet. Apparently. Crossroads Cantina is owned by the same company as Cleo Club. I love Cleo Club so I was even more disappointed about my experience here. I will probably go back to try the food, but won't be sitting at the bar. read more

Crossroads Cantina is the spot to hit for Happy Hour. The $4 dips (basically half price!) are such a steal and make it easy to try something new. Highly recommend the Sikil Pak--something I probably wouldn't have ordered on my own, but our waitress Mia insisted, and she was absolutely right. It's this rich, smoky pumpkin seed "hummus" that's totally unique and seriously addictive. Pair it with a $10 margarita or sangria from the Happy Hour menu, and you've got the perfect combo. Between the great deals and the Cantina's outdoor seating area, it's an ideal place for a quick bite or to kickstart a fun night out. I can't wait for the weather to be warm enough for @crossroadscantinakc to open the roof and the doors of their indoor/outdoor patio! The space is gorgeous and when everything is open it is going to be hard to get a seat!!! The deviled eggs are delicious. I know what you are thinking deviled eggs at a Mexican grill, why?! Because there is mesa in the egg mix, it is egg elote . Also was really happy with the guacamole. It tasted like avocado, which should be hard but it is in land locked Missouri. Entrees I would get again would be the mole enchiladas and the burger. The mole had deep rich flavor and the meat was seasoned. The addition of the green chilies with white American cheese made the burger a little different. Also the patties were not completely smashed or fully pub style. I would not get the Redfish again. It was over cooked and really didn't have a lot of flavor. I was excited for fish from a wood fire grill, but this didn't live up to the menu description. There was also just too much rice and not enough salsa macha. The salsa macha was good but got diluted by the rice and fish. The chicken fajitas were ok. They didn't come out on super hot plate sizzling. Which is fine, but just what is expected. Also there was squash in the vegetable mix. The atmosphere in the outdoor dining area is an amazing oasis in the middle of the city! You might forget you're not in Missouri. Our waitress was so kind and attentive. There was an average wait for our food to come out but it was hot so we could tell it was fresh and hadn't been sitting. The beans, street corn dip, and redfish tacos were my favorites. Elevated Mexican cuisine! In search of a spot for a lighter meal this spot came through with some amazing food and fantastic service. The Pumpkin seed hummus was a nice surprise. The street corn is very flavorful and the salsa was average. The shrimp tacos were fabulous. Our hostess, Mia, did a wonderful job suggesting food and drink options. I tried the New Mexican place in the Crossroads and had a great experience. i love how they transformed the building from an old phone store to a cute urban Catina. With the patio closed and in the dark it was hard to find the entrance, but when I saw the brightly lit Catina sign above the door I knew this was going to be a place with a great vide. The host was full of smiles and so was the server. Everyone seemed happy! The green chili white queso was amazing and only $4 during happy hour. The house margarita was fantastic, and it packs a punch! (Designate a driver or take the street car) I had the verde enchiladas with rotisserie chicken, the chicken was tender and flavorful and they put in a lot. The 3 enchiladas were more than filling! I can't wait go back and try the other items on the menu. read more

I grabbed a dinner with my partner and a friend as we were STOKED to try out a Mexican spot by the Rockhill folks (think Wise Guy not too far away.) Let me say the main room was gorgeous. However they seated us on the empty patio side and the vibe was pretty sad - it filled up a little more with a couple more parties. Would much prefer if they ask where you'd like to sit, since we made reservations a while ago. Let's start with the good. Everyone loved their cocktails (margarita, carajillo and Desnudo y Famoso.) A little pricey for KC though. The free homemade chips and salsa (and which had a wonderful heat) slapped. They were very generous and it was wonderful. I'd say the service was mixed. Our server was very nice, but definitely felt like they were upselling drinks (they asked us 4x if we wanted more drinks.) The food was more mixed. My partner got the burger but said it was very salty (and they love salt) and the green chilies needed more heat/flavor. My friend got the nachos as a main and it was 6 individual nachos with all the toppings on each (like Chilis in the 90s.) I got the steak and shrimp fajitas. The bed of veggies was perfectly seasoned and this dish was overall good -- minus the supermarket style corn tortillas which I would have expected to be homemade at this price point ($32). I didn't realize that you had to ask for toppings for the fajitas (to be fair it said on the menu.) So I didn't get the guac, sour cream, pico, etc. On the flip side, my server didn't ask me if I wanted them to come with my fajitas either. I think that's a total service miss and that's an easy change. Overall, they need to work out the service and food kinks. Air on the side of over communicating and tone down the upselling of drinks. They should add some desserts if they can too. I'd come back after a few more months. read more

Had a nice solo lunch here on a Saturday. Since I was by myself, I sat at the bar. The bartender was very attentive and friendly. First impressions of the decor were really positive. I liked that it had more of a Mexico meets Miami vibe, than a stereotypical Mexican restaurant in town. Really pretty and minimalist. Anyway, I've seen people online raving about the coconut margarita with a seasonal option and it was delicious! Remind me very much of a piña colada without the piña. I'd also see people raving about the deviled eggs, which I'm a sucker for and since I was by myself, I decided to just add a half Caesar salad with it to not go overboard since I couldn't take leftovers with me, as I was heading to a show at the musical. I found the deviled eggs to be a bit salty, but I really liked the flavor of the pickled jalapeño and the corn. And the Caesar was a little bit different with some chili flavors in there. It was a little heavy on the anchovy for my taste, but if you're somebody who enjoys an anchovy based Caesar, you'll be very happy with it. I was able to get my check very quickly and all in all it was a really great experience. Great vibes. I think it would be a great place to go for dinner for a date night. read more

Crossroads Cantina is what you want it to be. That high-end, hint of Mexican cuisine but not really, aesthetic little joint. For $17, you can get a trio of verde enchiladas, sans side - so it feels a little pricey. But to their credit, the chips and salsa were free - and a generous portion. If you go during happy hour, you can order an additional dip like Guac or Queso for $4, and then you've really got it going on. Crossroads Cantina strangely reminded me of a restaurant called Domingo on the River Walk in San Antonio, TX - I swear the enchiladas and their presentation were identical, as were the vibes. The service was great - the waitress and the host staff were all smiles and seemingly enthusiastic to be opening this new restaurant. I didn't love that they packed us in like sardines at adjacent tables, despite a relatively empty restaurant, as it made conversations not feel very private - but I understand what they're trying to do. Overall - I'd go here again, IF I were looking to eat at a place like this, which isn't all that often. If I had guests in town, and we were looking for a classy Mexican spot, this would be on the list. read more

Absolutely fantastic experience. La Cantina is classy, warm, and perfect for a great date night or special occasion. The atmosphere is intimate and inviting without feeling stuffy. They surprised us with a birthday cake which was such a thoughtful touch and truly made the night special. The food was off the chain. We had the mole and rojo enchiladas and both were incredible. Deep flavor, perfectly balanced, and clearly made with care. The guacamole was fresh and vibrant, and the homemade chips were hands down some of the best I've ever had. I love a good Mexican restaurant, but I can't say that I consider this one good solely because of the food. The restaurant itself feels very cool, with great interior design, lighting and music. Everything is brand new and clean which makes it feel super inviting. It's pretty pricey considering there's so many other great Mexican restaurants at lower price points with better food. I ordered the Taco Salad which I figured would be a safe bet, but I was wrong about that. What I got was basically a regular salad with a mini taco on top. The shell was too crispy to really break it down easily into the lettuce. And the beef and beans were an interesting choice I can't get behind. I think chicken and steak are better suited for this dish, but aside from that, the ratio of everything was off with way too much salad, cheese, guac and beans and not enough meat or taco. There also wasn't enough spice in anything. I didn't taste the chipotle ranch at all. I don't think I've ever said this but I'm glad I filled up on chips and guac before the meal because sadly that was the best part of the food. It wasn't even worth it to eat the leftovers which is unheard of for me. One upside was the House Margarita which was mixed perfectly, but at $14 for a whiskey glass sized margarita I'll opt for the better alternatives where I get more for my money. read more

I am surprised the ratings for this place aren't higher, we had an awesome experience! First of all, the restaurant itself is beautiful. The glassed in room has incredible ambiance and I imagine it will be perfect for Spring dining, it all opens up. The service was fast and attentive, and holy cow the Birria Tacos the salsa tasted fresh, the queso was perfectly seasoned and tasty. I am excited to go back and try more menu items. Danielle, our waitress, was very knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations. Queso, guacamole, and birria taquitos were all sooo good. The star of the show was without a doubt the coconut margs -- did start a debate about if it could be the best marg you've ever had if it's a unique flavor (the consensus was yes it is maybe the best ever??). Had a rough start, dirty dishes and drinking water. BUT the food was actually good. Went for happy hour, destroyed about 2 bowls of chips and the dip trio(queso, guac, elote) Also had the shrimp tacos. Taco was delicious. The shrimps used were HUGE, and juicy. Taco fell apart so it needs two tortillas. Really enjoyed sitting in the patio area, watching everyone struggling to find the door was our entertainment lol. Servers were great. Embarrassed & Saddened Being downtown residents, we were extremely excited to come to a much needed new Mexican restaurant in the area. When we approached the host stand, a gentleman greeted us & we said we are here for happy hour we saw on your website. He stated that it is not available on weekends but told us he would "honor it" for us if we showed him the menu on the website. Upon confirming it was in fact still on listed as "Daily Happy Hour" a woman approached & informed us by saying "Sorry our website has not been updated but I still cannot honor this". She was not polite about it. We then chose to walk out. we are saddened that this could've been a new nice place to come and enjoy happy hours and dinners out but based on this interaction, we will definitely not return. Being an "upscale" mexican restaurant, you would think you would get a customer service response that would honor it. We went opening night and while the service was ok, the food was just not it. The margaritas tasted like sprite with margarita mix added. We tried the seasonal marg as well which was coconut- solid 7/10 and the more expensive margarita (forgot the name) for $18. Small drink sizes for price. Street corn dip tasted too much of sour cream, guacamole was flavorless. Thankfully they brought their house sauce which helped give it some flavor but still lacking. Boyfriend had the shrimp fajitas and said they lacked flavor and the shrimp were rubbery. I had the shrimp tacos which also lacked flavor. The grilled corn side dish was probably the best item we got, Mexican rice was bland. I understand it's a new restaurant but the lack of flavor in every dish was just a huge disappointment for us.
