My husband and I stopped by Los Zarapes for dinner last night because I really wanted him to try their homemade corn tortillas, which I absolutely love. I've been here a few times prior and the food is consistently good. We were greeted and seated right away. Their chips came out hot and fresh, and I have to mention the salsa because it is so good. It has a slight kick to it and tastes homemade, which makes it even better! We snacked on a few baskets of chips while waiting for our food. I ordered the carne asada and it was honestly 10/10. The meat was fresh, tender, and full of flavor. The cilantro rice was also really tasty. My husband got the taco salad with carnitas and said it was great. The portion sizes are very generous! This spot is right across from my cousin's barber shop, so it's kind of become the go-to after a haircut since we can just walk over. I've been here once before and wasn't really impressed, but figured I'd give it another shot and see if it hit different this time. Honestly... it didn't. I had the chicken tacos and my cousin went with the menudo with hominy. Nothing was bad, it just didn't really stand out either. Kind of one of those meals where you eat it and forget about it on the drive home. You can tell they're trying, and I respect that, it just didn't come together for me. Dine in Well, the back story to me, my wife, & stepdaughter eating dinner tonight at Los Zarapes, occurred when I sparked up a conversation with the owner, Mauro, while we were standing in line together at El Mercado Loco Grocery store. I initiated a conversation with Mauro, letting him know how much I enjoyed a good salsa, and he listened intently and then took out a business card that said, Los Zarapes on it. I asked if he was the owner & he nodded in the affirmative. So, with the card in hand, me, my wife, and stepdaughter, drove to eat dinner at his restaurant, and the food did not disappoint. We were greeted by a young lady with a smile who sat us in a booth that was clean, and before I could generate a thought, the general manager, Jesus, brought us out chips & a variety of salsas with different flavors & heat, all very flavorful. Jesus was kind, genial, and knowledgeable about ALL ITEMS on the menu, and provided us with a detailed explanation of each dish we inquired about. I was surprised they served Albondigas, because I rarely see Mexican restaurants serve this. It came in a large bowl and was super flavorful, a very enjoyable dinner. My wife ordered the Combination Fajitas that came out SEARING with shrimp, chicken & steak, with a side of rice & beans, & a separate plate with sour cream, Guacamole & Pico, oh, and more than enough homemade flour tortillas to go around. My stepdaughter had a Mexican dish I've NEVER seen on a menu at a Mexican restaurant, the Pollo A La Crema, that was super tasty, and she was happy she ordered! Our overall experience was excellent, a very Family Feel with their unique Mexican recipes and attention to details, where everything we ate was flavorful and with the appropriate amount of spice & heat... First time trying this place. They got the steak right for the fajitas! Deliciously marinated. Guacamole is intentionally prepared as well with just the right hint of salt and lime. Granite Bay meets Mexicali at Los Zarapes Mexican Restaurant, located in Granite Bay, CA. Why travel to Mexico when you can enjoy delicious, authentic northern Mexican cuisine, locally in Placer County? A plus... you'll be treated like family by some of the friendliest people you'll ever have the pleasure to meet. As you enter the restaurant, you'll be greeted by a staff member, and seated at one of the booths in the dining room. "Soup of the Day," along with "Today's Special" are posted on the counter. There are many signed photos from regular diners pasted to the counter. The dining room is long and narrow, very clean, comfortable and attractively decorated. The decor reminds me of a mid-level restaurant in Tijuana or Mexicali, complete with the vivid, earthy colors that you'll find in Mexico. Immediately after I was seated, I was presented with a complimentary basket of fresh corn tortilla chips, along with a bowl of salsa. The chips were crispy, fresh and warm from the kitchen, and the bowl of salsa was delicious, as I could tell it was made from scratch, by the talented chef Anna Sr. That's a great way to get the meal started! Like everything else I enjoyed today, the corn tortilla chips were fresh from the kitchen, warm, crisp and flavorful. These tortilla chips weren't left over from yesterday, as they were freshly made and I could taste the difference. The salsa was freshly made from scratch, thick and very flavorful, with just a little "kick" to make things worthwhile, but nothing at all extreme. It was made from scratch and you could tell, as the flavor was simply delicious, and it tasted just like the kind of salsa you'd find at Tia Maria's house in a northern Mexican town. Simply delicious! From the "Mexican Favorites" page of the menu, I went with "Borrego," along with pinto beans and Mexican rice. My choice of tortillas was corn, and I was in for a treat, as I enjoyed some of Anna Sr.'s made-from-scratch tortillas, hot from the kitchen. Muy sabroso! The menu describes "Borrego" as, "Marinated, seasoned lamb shank, braised slowly until tender. Served with marinade sauce, pico de gallo, sliced avocado and corn or flour tortillas." Such a difficult choice between Anna Sr.'s corn or flour tortillas! The seasoned lamb shank was marinated in a robust, red marinade, which held in the juicy flavor, and made it fall-off-the-bone tender and simply delicious. I notice the very red color, and the thick texture of the marinade, most likely due to lots of tomato and a chili pepper or two, along with slices on onion. The thick marinated coated the lamb shank, which added flavor along with juiciness, and enhanced the delicious, tender lamb, but didn't overpower the robust taste. If you're a lover of lamb, and you've never enjoyed Mexican Borrego before, you're in for a treat. The meat was so tender that a knife wasn't needed, as the meat fell off the bone when poked with the fork. The shank was of a generous size. As an added bonus, there was a small dish of the marinated on my plate, with was meant to dip the lamb into. The marinade was the same as used for the lamb shank, except it was much thinner, as it was meant for dipping rather than sticking to the food. It was simply delicious, and made for a great enhancement to the delicious bites of lamb. The Mexican rice was simply amazing! The rice had a delicious, Mexican flavor, not at all spicy, but simply bursting with flavor. I suspect the talented chef must have used chicken broth rather than water, as this rice wasn't simply "blah" like the rice you're served at many restaurants... this rice was a cut above and "top shelf" any way you looked at it. Like everything else on my plate, the portion size was generous. I opted for pinto beans, but after placing my order, I asked for an order of refried beans on the side. The pinto beans came attractively presented in a small dish, complete with lots of thick bean juice. The beans were tender, flavorful and simply as good as plain pinto beans can get. The pico de gallo was fresh, and especially with the sliced avocado, made for a refreshing side to my lunch. Diced tomato, white onion, cilantro and... surprise... sliced cabbage made up the pico de gallo, but it was wonderful, and the cool veggies contrasted with the warm lamb, beans and rice, and made a wonderful side dish. The corn tortillas were simply OUT OF THIS WORLD delicious, and I could have made a meal of them alone! I'm running out of space... this restaurant is AMAZING and just might be my new favorite Mexican restaurant in Roseville. FIVE STARS!! read more

Los Zarapes Mexican restaurant recently changed ownership. It's a family run business with multiple generations working there. They treat their customers like family, exuding a welcoming family vibe. They serve up traditional Mexican comfort food done right. The unassuming restaurant is tucked inside a strip mall in Granite Bay. I ordered borrego which is a marinated lamb shank. I never had borrego before. I've had lamb shank, just not borrego. So I was excited to try it. The plate also came with refried beans, rice, tortillas, and a bowl of the sauce that the lamb was braised in. $19.99. The sauce had a strong, deep flavor replicating the flavors of the shank. The shank had a strong gamey flavor as expected. I enjoyed it. The meat was tender and fork shreddable. Mmm. An added bonus was that on the weekends, they serve housemade tortillas. Fresh off the press. They make both corn and flour. I was able to ask for a half and half order. They had a classic, home made taste and look. They provide complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was darn tasty. Hubs ordered the crispy shredded beef taco plate. Of course, I took a bite of the taco. Not bad at all. Hubs and I popped in for lunch on a recent weekend. The place was popping. So much so, folks had to wait for a table. We lucked out and just beat the crowd. The two waitresses were busy. Our waitress was fantastic. She had a bright smile and personality. But with a full house, she was a constant whirl of energy and stretched a bit thin. We decided to try this place after seeing Good-days review. this used to be our go to when it was "Bernardo's " We were pleasantly surprised as the interior has been updated so the booths are new and you sit upright rather than sink in. I always begin by judging the food once the salsa hits the table. The salsa was tasty but not much kick. Unfortunately we were spoiled by Bernardo's salsa, no one makes a better salsa to date. I did ask for "picante salsa". they had Habanero and a green salsa. I chose Habanero, however they were out of that so I tried the green salsa. It did have heat, flavor was good and when I mixed it with the red salsa it was perfect. I ordered a chicken taco and a cheese enchilada. my friend ordered a taco bowl with chile verde. My sister in law ordered chimichanga and an enchilada. Food arrived quickly , however the only thing that was actually hot was the chimichanga, food was lukewarm. I did enjoy my chicken taco, chicken was fresh and the taco was crispy. I tried the cilantro rice which was quite good. Refried beans, just average. The cheese enchilada had nice flavor but I took it home because the cheese wasn't hot and can't eat a lukewarm cheese enchilada. Could have used more sauce on the cheese enchilada .The taco bowl not overly generous with the chili verde but it was fresh and tasty. Chimichanga was good and the beef enchilada also decent. Perhaps because we arrived at 4:00 it was after lunch rush and right before dinner so with that being said we will return during lunch and try it out again. Customer service was good. read more

This place isn't fancy, but the food is outstanding. I had fajitas and my dining partner had the shrimp & mushroom plate. We both enjoyed the flavor and the generous amount of food per plate. Service was slow, but I don't think they have many people working. I think only one guy was serving tables, one lady was answering the phone & taking phone orders and several guys in the back cooking, etc. .We were there for lunch, so maybe a reduced crew for the lunch. The food was flavorless or flavors that shouldn't be there. My shrimp appetizer tasted like vinegar sauce. It was so strong I couldn't eat it. I wiped the shrimp off with my napkin. The Menudo tasted like canned and we were not served the usual condiments, cilantro, onion, etc. The service was terrible. We had to ask for things several times. Although they were very nice, it wasn't attentive. Our toddlers meal was forgotten. We had to remind them. And then when it came out, the plate was so hot it couldn't be near him. The weight staff came up and asked us for a different times if we would like more chips and salsa, but it never came even after we said yes. There was a table whom already was served their food and one person waiting for a burrito to go. It took 30 minutes for me to receive my 3 street tacos. As a former chef, I'd be embarrassed if it took me 30 Minutes to serve up street tacos. They need to hire additional line cooks or learn to communicate with guests better. read more

So much food we had plenty of leftovers that tasted just as good the next day. This is not a "fine dining experience", the food is prepared well and tastes good, the place is clean, comfortable (ac was working fine) and the staff are friendly and helpful.
