We came in for a cup of coffee to start our morning and ended up having a really unique experience! We came into the store and were shocked by the flamboyant and eye-catching interior. When we asked to see a menu, the barista with the long hair said he could make us anything we wanted, tea or coffee. We got honey cinnamon lattes and they were amazing! Fifty years ago I had my first espresso, a cafe-con-leche (cortado) at a pension in Spain where I was residing. I eventually was allowed to run the machine. Since then, I have enjoyed nosing around for good coffee shops and fantasized about opening my own. Garth Janssen's Lost Dog Coffee in Shepherdstown, WV, lacks the classical music and chess boards of my pipe-dream shop, but it has the imagined vibe. I spent three days there last month. We absolutely loved the Lost Dog. The owner is a genius and was a pleasure to talk to. The guy should write a book on service because they get it right. Lost Dog was always busy the two days I was in town! Absolutely fabulous little spot with an outside window to order. There's a huge menu so be prepared, you're gonna have a lot to choose from. If you're here - I say go for it. Go all out on a coffee or drink you wouldn't normally order because the selection here really is fun and outrageous. I saw a double stuffed Oreo Reese's iced latte on the menu! I went with the matcha and it was too die for. Fresh whipped cream and a drizzle of honey with a sprig of mint on top, ugh! Perfection. It tasted delicious and was just what I wanted for breakfast. There's a small outdoor area with two tables but it's definitely a grab and go kind of place. The older gentleman who works there is pretty off putting. He significantly delays making your order to make it seem like he's making a work of art, however it takes so long it makes for bad service. I recently visited Lost Dog Coffee and was deeply disturbed by the racist behavior of the owner, Garth Janssen. While ordering my cofffee, I listened to the owner, Garth Janssen make a series of blatantly racist remarks about my Black skin color. His comments were not only offensive but completely inappropriate and also indicative of a deeply prejudiced mindset (which I found not reflective of Shephardstown as a whole). When corrected, the owner, Garth Janssen, argued his commentary on black people and their skin color is not racist because he "has black friends." It is unacceptable for a business owner to treat customers with such disrespect in 2024. It is disheartening to see the racism of Garth Janssen displayed in such a public place. Lost Dog definitely wins the category of most creative coffee drink options in the area. They have a handful of espresso-seltzer drinks including the wet dog, something I think was called a lemon turbo, other espresso/coffee drinks, and smoothies. The wet dog can be thought of as a cream soda espresso and more or less consists of seltzer, cream, syrup, and espresso. The lemon turbo is something along the lines of espresso, seltzer, lemon juice, and syrup. It packs a sour and sweet punch and was my preference of the two drinks. For you coffee aficionados: neither drink allows you to really taste the espresso/coffee notes but are enjoyable nonetheless. Cute little walk up window shop. After walking German street and checking out all the stores it was time for a drink stop. We were there on a Tuesday around noon and only had one person ahead of us. I got an iced dirty chai (had to let the ice melt a little, it was a tiny bit strong) and the kids went with a flavored whip cream cup with novelty drink umbrella; pineapple and chocolate. The barista would not serve us. We waited in line while the barista was having a social conversation and was ignored. We waited so long, we decided to walk in the establishment to look around, went back out, and again waited.The customers in front of us had their drinks in their hands and the the three of them were just talking away and ignoring us. My wife said we waited for 8 minutes. Our patience ran out, so we went to a coffee shop up the street. Apparently, it's more important to him to have a social conversation, than to serve customers. Great example of how NOT to run a business. Maybe, he just doesn't care about serving customers. I don't really know. We won't be going back to give him another opportunity. This is a quaint, yet eccentric coffee shop in the heart of downtown Shepherdstown, WV. Due to COVID, I was only able to order via the window and couldn't go inside. Lost Dog Coffee has a huge menu of just about every caffeinated and decaffeinated drink you can think of. I chose an oolong tea, which I enjoyed. Note: the shop does not provide sleeves for your hot drinks, so keep that in mind - you may want to wear a glove or bring your own reusable sleeve - but the barista was kind enough to provide some folded paper towels to help shield our hands from the heat. All in all, this is a nice coffee shop that I wouldn't mind visiting again in the future. read more

There's never a question of whether I've had a good cup of it from them, as it's always spot on! For plant milks, they have had numerous options every time I've been there. From almond, to soy, to coconut, and even walnut milk, they have a far stronger selection than many cafes do. Last time I was there, the employees even let me try a shot of some new milks I hadn't tried before. They offer baked goods, but none I have seen were vegan in the past (if that's what you're looking for). Stopped in at Lost Dog this afternoon for some caffeine. What a strange little and eclectic coffee shop! Upon entering - the first thing that hit me was a musty odor of sorts - it immediately elicited memories of the smell of my Grandmother's old house in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Very powerful. The place had a number of small cafe tables and chairs with burlap bags draped over the chair backs - gave the place a bit of a rustic feel. Jazz music was loudly playing, the place was decorated with a mish-mash of traditional, antique-ish looking items, plus funky modern lighting such as a plasma lamp. To say the vibe of this coffee shop is eclectic would be an understatement. The place oozes weird, but the confident type of weird. The Lost Dog Coffee shop dares to be different, and wins every time. Donned with rocking chairs and knick knacks galore, this shop is not your average coffee joint. I'm go to Shepherdstown a few times a year because my family lives nearby. Whenever I do, I stop by Lost Dog, because honestly, they have the best coffee in town. I always go for their coffee, but they also sell tea and baked goods. This past weekend, I stopped by and ordered three drinks - a shot of espresso, the green iced tea (sweetened), and the black masala chai tea. The shot of espresso was crisp and delicious. The other two drinks were just as flavorful. The reason this review is not five stars though is that the wait in line is ridiculously long. There should be a better system of taking orders and preparing drinks, especially given that this is such a popular spot. The owner/barista just pounces on every person that doesn't agree with him, spews his rage and tells them to never come back because he doesn't need their business. Great business model.
