The food was great. But the low rating is because of the chef/guy running the place. Complete asshole, who chose to berate an employee for 10 minutes in front of the whole restaurant and rest of the staff. While waiting for the food (took a while to come out but, again, was very good), we had to hear this guy lay into an employee without any decency or regard for the rest of the restaurant. No attempt to go to an "Employees Only" or outside area. The whole time he was audibly pissed with everyone working there and made it well known. If we go again, we will get something to-go so we can limit our exposure to his toxic ego. Absolutely unprofessional and rather embarrassing. He needs to do better or get out of the business. read more

Happened to come across this deli on the way out of town. Cute restaurant with plenty of seating. I am so glad we stopped. I ordered the avocado toast and the beekeeper tea and my husband ordered the pastrami sandwich and lemonade. Everything was absolutely delicious and perfect. I think I could easily round this to a 4.5, but four seems more appropriate than five, so here we are. We ordered two kids grilled cheeses, the grinder, and the turkey sandwich, and all were tasty, but just missing that one thing that would take it over the top. The iced matcha, and the orange cream smoothies were both good but again nothing that made you say I absolutely have to return. The bread in the grilled cheese was phenomenal, but the cheese seemed just OK, and there was no pulling of the cheese so it never hit that masterful cheese excellence. The servers were extremely nice, and not only checked on us continuously, but also make sure that we were comfortable with our meals, and that one particular sandwich that we had requested to be heated was indeed heated. The restaurant gives off a cute country kitchen vibe, I think they were using fiesta Ware, so the theme is all aligned, again Just missing those little touches that would take the food over the top. Even the chips, and recognizing it's a large lift, it's important to note that a house made chip tastes so different from a chip that comes out of a bag, and the chip came out of the bag and still didn't taste extremely fresh, But all in all they were so kind. This little gem of a deli opened in August 2022, but I just discovered it today. They get some of their bread from the locally respected Bolivar Bakery and grinder/hoagie/sub rolls from a good Italian bakery in VA. All the produce and meat was fresh, high quality stuff. I had their turkey sandwich, which was outstanding. The coffee was okay, but not great. Nice wooden floors & brightly colored walls in a well-ventilated space makes for a great ambiance. Service was friendly, quick, & efficient. I will be back soon. read more

MJ's is a fantastic option for breakfast or lunch. My boyfriend and I stopped by early and we were hoping to get some lunch to go. The workers made it happen even though it was still a bit early. They were so friendly and accommodating, really great people. We got our food to go, but they have a great amount of tables inside for a cozy dining experience. I went for the brie and ham sandwich, and it was absolutely delicious. Great bread, quality, ham, melted cheese, and I believe it was a fig jam spread. Yummm. It was perfect and paired with chips, delectable. My boyfriend really enjoyed his pastrami sandwich too. It was piled high with meat. This is a great eatery, if I lived in town I could see myself coming here very often. There's a great food scene in this part of town! read more

Really excellent soup and sandwiches. We had the Grinder and the Pepper Pastrami sandwiches. They were both truly outstanding. Very simple ingredients, but absolutely perfect balance - especially the grinder. Also had the mushroom bisque. Really awesome. Everyone was very nice and service was very responsive. This place is DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!! They cross contaminated my tomato soup and potato chips. As I ordered my food to go, one of the workers licked mixed my soup and then licked the spoon. He then proceeded to put the contaminated spoon back into my soup. Another instance he scooped the chips onto my plate without wearing gloves. read more

Visiting the area for the first time and stopped by here for breakfast. By far THE best avocado toast I have ever had ! This was not your average avocado on toast. Wife and I decided to give this place a try for lunch. We ordered 2 sandwiches, neither of which included any cooked ingredients. The staff was extremely flustered due to it being unusually busy (according to them). Oddly it really wasn't that busy. My wife ordered the ham & Brie sandwich and I ordered the Grinder. No fries, just chips. As I write this, it's been 50 minutes and no sandwiches. We were just asked what we ordered. These sandwiches are no different than something you might get at Jersey Mike's. It's lunch meat! We like to support local businesses but it will probably be quite some time before we come back. By the way, my wife's sandwich had a thin slice of ham with Brie for $13! read more

I had lunch recently at MJ's and it was truly outstanding! A gem of a place in Shepherdstown, WV. I had the Smoked Salmon BLT and it was perfection. The menu is varied and everything sounds delicious. I can't wait to return. Melissa, who sat us at our table, was particularly kind. As we were new to the area, she told us a bit about Shepherdstown and was completely delightful. Jordan, the chef, was behind the counter and welcomed people as they entered as he continued to make sandwiches, cook, and do all those "chef" things. Fantastic breakfast spot in Shepherdstown. I've been saying for years what is missing in Shepherdstown is a cute local breakfast/bagel shop, and this is that and then some. My husband and I each got a smoothie, which both were fresh and delicious. Love that they have milk alternative options for smoothies AND cream cheese. I'm lactose sensitive, but find it rare to find a place that caters to that in more ways than just soy or no cheese. I had the lox bagel with the cashew cream cheese and it was so good! The capers were a nice touch and the presentation was beautiful! We'll definitely be back! read more

The Pom Berry smoothie was well balanced and not too tart. The mint cherry limeade was the right amount of tart to go with a good sandwich.
