I have to credit my son, Mike B., for finding this bakery. He called me and asked me what I would like from the bakery. I ordered the Pecan Granny Bun. Yes, truthfully, partly because of the name, and partly because of the pecans and icing. This bakery used homemade recipes and it taste delicious. The ingredients list had flour, yeast, salt, cinnamon, pecans, milk, sugar, and eggs. All ingredients that you can identify and pronounce. There was a lot of pecans and just the right amount of icing. The portion size was very generous. I really enjoyed my rolls. I would love to go back and pick up some more freshly made baked goods. read more

Happened to be in Shepherdstown and a friend called. We mentioned we were there to her as she had gone to Shepherd as an undergrad. She recommended the English muffin bread so we bought a few loaves to take home. We found they were delicious, delicate toasted with sugar free apple butter. I wish I loved my visit to this bakery more. It was all a bit chaotic. Stopped in around 2 o'clock and I was looking for their German chocolate cupcakes but they were all out. I settled for a marble cupcake, peanut butter cupcake and a slice of vanilla raspberry cake. I also got a small container of syrup and jam. The workers were a bit flustered but I tried to assure them I could get something else if they couldn't figure out pricing. Took a bit longer than expected but it was fine. The baked goods could've been better. The peanut butter cupcake was the best out of all three. The marble was a bit stale and the vanilla cake was all frosting and way too overly sweet. I also tried their heath and harvest cookies. Both of those were excellent - I can definitely recommend their cookies. Nice place to sit outside and watch the world go by. We went on Sunday after the farmer's market. It was a perfect day for a coffee and pastry. We split a coffee which was good. The pastries were very good. I had a coffeecake muffin and my husband an apple filled doughnut. Service was quick and efficient. We will go again, next time we are up at the market. read more

Oh a whim, my husband and I came in this Sweet Shop to get a treat. I ended up, at the recommendation of an employee, having the special - a pastrami sandwich on rye. This sandwich was heavenly!!!! This was the only thing open for breakfast on the Wednesday morning we were in town. They have a lovely drink selection of teas, coffees, juice, & soda. The Peppermint Mocha was wonderful. There were all sorts of baked goods to choose from. Cakes, cookies, donuts, croissant (both sweet & savory). The young lady working there was welcoming, kind, energetic, & great at her job. There was seating outside but we chose to sit inside due to the weather. Inside is warm & inviting both physically & mentally. They have local honey & jams for sale, clean tables to sit at, & a community bulletin board greets you as you walk in. The bathrooms were on the smaller side but clean & nice. Given that it was used as a Civil War hospital at one point, the building has a lot of history & they have converted it to its current purpose nicely. I won't be back to this bakery. I ordered a carrot cake for my daughter's birthday and it was the saddest, most bland carrot cake we ever had. There was no flavor and no carrot that I could see. I wanted to get her a nice cake and not just a grocery store one, but I should've just stuck with the grocery store. Sad I spent all that money on something that wasn't even good. Also, my other daughter wanted a cupcake but they ran out of the one she wanted (cookies and cream). Well they offered me a frozen one. They create edible works of art using quality ingredients. We left with a big box of baked goods and the total came to about $14. Not bad at all! Employees are so friendly and helpful. This place is okay, but they could definitely do some things to improve. I think their prices are fair, and service is fine, but the cupcakes we got were overly sweet and a bit dry. My daughter who attends Shepherd University stops at this bakery almost daily through the week and orders tea and gets lunch. She has been doing this since school started in August and always says how nice the employees are and how much she likes the food. She was there today getting settled in when an older woman who I assume is the owner rudely told her she can't be using her wi fi if she isn't going to buy anything. My daughter is shy but she told her she would be getting something she just hasn't had the chance yet. She walked off and came back just minutes later and said I meant now. You need to buy something now. She humiliated my daughter in front of everyone. My daughter literally buys something every time she goes to the cafe. There are a lot of college students that go there to use their Wi-Fi. I hope they realize what kind of person owns this place and decide to go somewhere else. My daughter and I will never be back. It's a shame such a nasty person runs this place and can't treat college students any better than what she does. read more

Wow, I wish there was a bakery like this in every town. OK, at least in my town. There were all kinds of fun choices for a treat. I wanted one of everything. I planned a 75th Birthday party for my husband. It was held at the Bavarian Inn who recommended I order the cake from this bakery. At their recommendation I did. Three weeks in advance, custom cake with artwork on top from one of my husband's photographs of a steam engine from Western Maryland. Gave them my credit card, was assured all would be taken care of and delivered to the In in time for the party. Party time, guests arrived from near and far. Chicago, New Hampshire, Philadelphia. No cake. No one at the Inn could find it. Forced to get a cake at the Inn for $85. $20 more than my "custom cake". I complained to both the Inn and the bakery, who said it was some kind of mix up and I could come over two days later and pick up the cake. All my guests were gone. I no longer needed to worry about feeding 20 people cake. They also did not mention if I would still have to pay for it. So I passed. Who needs a three day old cake? So stay clear of this place. Can't trust them to do the job as promised. They pretty much ruined what I had hoped would be a surprise for my husband to see one of his cherished photos on a cake. Wish I could give them fewer than 1 star. read more

The Shepherdstown Sweet Shoppe apparently thinks so, but dare I say NO. The combo of meats and cheese, the refreshing crunch of a pickle, the joy of a tomato, the sparkle of dijon all presented on a vessel perfectly selected for its nuances... dear dear bread - the strong yet soft vessel that holds its companions tight and wraps them in love. Instead what I was presented with was an insult to the idea of eating. Too much cheese, meat that was fatty, yet lacking flavor, greens that are rubbery and lackluster and dear lord bread that was soggy and stuck. The bread was grocery store b grade and this place is a "bakery." I felt as if I was eating a sandwich that a cafeteria worker made at a school for troubled youth back in 1987. I had to pick it apart in order to find something to eat yet I still feel ashamed that I ate some of it because I just needed to eat something... I deserve better, we all do. I pray you all get a good sandwich, not one that makes you curse the ground you walk on. read more

I remember this palace use to be a lot better. My mom use to get my birthday caked there, but my last one was almost inedible it was so sugary. As of recent visits pastries were dry, too sweet, and artificial tasting.... the quality you would expect at a cheap Food Lion or Wal-Mart bakery. This place getting worse in service. Besides poor service staff is rude also. Every time I come here for coffee we have miscommunication because they are not good listeners. Coffee stand is always missing something, such as milk, oh if you ask for milk they charge you extra. By the way half and half container by the coffee is usually empty. read more

Would not get a cake from this woman (Theresa?) for anything. Attitude on the phone was horrible. Trying to find a local bakery to make a cake for my daughters birthday party the next day. Got a price from Chuck-E-Cheese for a quarter sheet. When I called Shepherdstown Sweet Shop I relayed the price and she said with a mast attitude she couldn't beat that on such short notice like I was bothering her for doing her job. Wife then informed me I had quoted the wrong size cake. Called back and the lady didn't even say her name this time (presumably seeing the same number on caller ID) and real nasty said "Are you just to price the cakes or what?" I always try to support local business and in this case will give a bakery slightly more money rather than dump more money into Chuck-E-Cheese. I'm surprised this place gets such low reviews. I've been coming here for nearly 20 years on and off (as I move into and out of the area again), and I have never once been disappointed by anything I've bought here. I pretty much always get a thoroughly unhealthy quantity of cookies plus something savory. The cookies are to die for: perfect texture and sweetness every time, no matter what the type of cookie. Today I had a Lemon Thyme Shortbread cookie that was very lightly sweet and a Snickerdoodle that was perfectly pillowy inside and sugar-cinnamon-grainy on top. I also had a Sausage Mozzarella Roll (brother of the famous West Virginia Pepperoni Roll) and was surprised to find they used a laminated (i.e., croissant) dough instead of a pizza dough. It was heaven. :-D In the past I've had their quiche and lots of their breads. Their English Muffin Bread is one of my favorite breads in the world (says someone who studied professional French baking and specialized in bread) and may objectively be the best bread in the world for grilled cheeses. I can't recommend this place enough to anyone. It is positively an institution in Shepherdstown. If you go there, you must come here! read more
