I've been stopping by here for years now. First time was memorable because of the surprisingly good espresso and the giant blue mohawk the barista serving me had. Last time, I rode there from Frederick with a friend on bicycles and their spro was still amazing. We also had two really good lemonade/tea drinks that came with umbrellas. Service was decent. We ordered two of the banana gorilla coffees. The server asked if I was sure we could handle it, which was a bit off-putting, because he didn't do it in a joking manner. It has 4 shits of espresso (not scary) and he said it's huge (20 oz. is not huge for serious coffee drinkers). I got to the bottom of mine in no time flat, and my 12 year-old daughter left just the backwash. We were not "wired" as he warned, because 30 minutes later she was taking a nap. We were in town visiting Shepherd University and went looking for some pick-me-up coffee. We quickly settled upon Lost Dog Coffee as we strolled down East German St (seemed like the main pow-wow street). I picked up an iced coffee, which was fine/good - not too bitter, not too watered down, just about right. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the best in town, and for that I cannot complain. However, service was a bit slow and it took about 10 minutes to roll through the 5 people in front of me for me to finally get my order in. Understanding it's a small operation, it still seemed like things could have been a bit more efficient. Anyways, it wasn't an issue for us as we were just leisurely strolling through, but if you're in a hurry and you see a line, you may want to reconsider. Lastly, no lids? I know I can't be the only one to wonder about it. I suppose it's to save some money and save some environment (extra green). That's cool, just be aware that if you need a lid, don't come looking for it here, or prepare to spill your coffee as you walk along the streets or driving in your car. After stopping by a few times (most recently, right before New Year's), I have to agree with fellow reviewers that the owner's strength might NOT be his customer service skills. However, he knows how to make a *great* cup of coffee; recently tried the cinnamon latte and asked for him to go light on the syrup since I don't like things too sweet. I definitely didn't mean to offend him by butchering one of his signature beverages and I know I can be a bit to picky at times. That said, I got a little attitude but the end result was just what I wanted so I was a happy customer. And yes - I left a tip. The quality, passion and creativity that Lost Dog offers will keep me coming back. There needs to be more places like this because chain coffee shops tend to repulse me in every way. So, just because you don't get treated like a princess/prince doesn't mean that mom & pop shops suck. :) Be patient, understand people aren't perfect and enjoy that cup of coffee! read more

The atmosphere in this place is amazing! Walked in and was immediately helped by two employees. I wasn't sure what I wanted at all, and asked what was good. They said everything is good, and it really all depends on my taste. They asked what my favorite type of desert is, and I answered "lime" (meant key lime pie, I don't eat limes for desert) and they gave me a cranberry lime thing. At first I was worried it would be gross, because it contained lime syrup, cranberry syrup, soda water, 2 shots of espresso, and some other stuff. I tried it and it was AMAZING!!! Strong espresso shop. They have many different flavors and combinations and the owner is very proud of his craft. If you don't know anything about coffee, you still will enjoy the sweet combos that are on the menu. If you like coffee chains, you should consider running far away from those and come here because it's infinitely better (for the same price.) Be polite though, these baristas actually have feelings and if you rub them off the wrong way, they will tell you. What the actual eff is wrong with the owner. As I was ordering he just turned around and walked away and then proceeded to get my order entirely wrong. When I tried to correct him he acted like I punched his first born child - and then proceeded to tell me my drink is the wrong drink because I wanted it iced. He gave me a literal diabetes drink of what I didn't order that I ended up throwing right in the trash. My everyday coffee order is an iced quad with a splash of oat milk. I ordered a drink that came close to that because I wanted to try one of their "custom" drinks, except the owner changed my drink in its entirety after I said I wanted my coffee iced. What a horribly rude owner, if he didn't walk away mid order then maybe he would have heard me correctly. Amazing place that I go to almost every day!(garth if you see this I am the kid who always gets the strawberry banana smoothie)! They have amazing smoothies and apple fritters.I really like the strawberry banana smoothie that they have as it is the only drink that I get there except for 1 time when I got a hot chocolate.If I could rate higher then 5 stars I would but sadly I can not rate higher than 5 stars.The owner, Garth is really cool and funny! I did not enjoy my experience in this coffee shop. I was able to place my order quickly and while I was waiting, I decided to have a conversation with the man making the coffee. I asked if he knew why the town was so busy that day and he stated there was a f&$cking marathon happening. I was taken back, as I had my daughter with me and it was completely unprofessional. The coffee shop decor was not appealing to me; naked mannequin with pubic hair, stripper pole with bras, baby doll body parts hanging from the ceiling and a painting that states police can't read. I thought Lost Dog was going to be my new favorite spot that I'd regret not having more chances to visit. It started off that way, with a colorful, cozy, cluttery atmosphere, plates of tea leaves to smell along the wall, and what seemed like were going to be friendly workers. But when I asked for a lid for my iced coffee, which I would be taking with me in the car, the man behind the counter said, "we don't give lids on cold takeout cups to cut back on waste." Okay, I'm fine with that, and had he left it at that, I might have given Lost Dog a couple extra stars. But he didn't leave it at that. Instead, I ended up with a personal attack from the barista about benevolent decisions THEY have had to make because I cannot be trusted to, about how my children will have to work in the landfills, (to which the other barista chimed in, "Not like YOU care, YOU won't still be alive, right?") and on and on. I suppose they meant for me to feel ashamed that I had not brought my own reusable cup. But there are other ways to make your point, especially to a paying customer. I am giving Lost Dog 2 stars: 1 for atmosphere and the other for a decent iced coffee. Lost Dog Coffee loses the other stars based on this incident. Minus one for poor customer service; Minus another for being sanctimonious; And minus the third for being hypocritical enough to serve said iced coffee in a plastic cup with a plastic straw instead of something biodegradable like paper. read more

I feel morally obligated to share my experience with people so they may avoid the same experience. This owner has zero respect for his customers. I wanted to leave as soon as I started ordering my coffee. He was extremely confrontational, had some sort of underlying anger and managed to insult me, calling me a "sucker" because I asked for a straw for my drink...? I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but after speaking with some locals, turns out he has had multiple interactions with others of the same nature and I am surprised this business is still around. Quite simply, this is my favorite coffee shop on the planet, bar none. With an eclectic interior jammed with oddities and marginalia, the Lost Dog is like an island of personality, a bastion of bona fidity, amidst a homogenized world of reliably caffeinated sameness. The walls feature the work of local artists: some good, some struggling to achieve goodness. You may encounter soundtracks that veer from classical to jazz to alternative to god-knows-what. All this is secondary to the coffee. This is coffee from people who really care about, and possibly worship, coffee. The lattes are the best you'll find for miles and miles. The Wet Dog is a strange and wonderful concoction, sort of a vanilla cream soda slammed with a double expresso. The Avocado Smoothie... well, when was the last time you tasted something wonderful that was a total surprise, not just a minor variation of the usual? It sounds weird, but it's heavenly. If you're a serious coffee aficionado, the owner can expound on the subtleties of the various coffees they sell, much of it organic and fairly traded. I consider this place to be the very nerve center of Shepherdstown, and a must-visit for those who are only in town for the day. Don't be put off by the kids and their dogs lounging around in front; this is one of the least pretentious and most genuinely cool places you will encounter. Excellent coffee and skilled baristas. My favorite speciality is the vanilla wet dog - a cold concoction with espresso, vanilla powder, soda water and a twist of orange. Sounds strange, but it really is refreshing and delicious. They lose points for the atmosphere and service. It's all a little too much - almost agressively quirky. As other reviewers have stated, the servers are unfriendly. It's not a comfortable place to wait in line. Skateboarders and smokers congregating on the sidewalk do not encourage lingering. read more

I love this place. I've been getting coffee here for years, traveling to the area from my native Pittsburgh to visit my in-laws in nearby Maryland. My ritual is to wake up, go for a run along the C&O Canal tow path, then go to the Lost Dog for some of the great strong coffee there. You can tell by looking around the place that the guy who owns it loves coffee and tea. I like that, next to each brewed carafe of coffee, he has a handwritten description--filled with poetry and the hyperbolic enthusiasm of the true fanatic--of each of the blends on offer. A friend of mine lived in Sheperdstown for a short time and while visiting her she took me here. I live in Portland, OR now which seems to have more "alternative" coffee shops than anywhere else, but all the ones I've tried haven't even compared to this one. Its been a few years and I don't remember the name of what I had (it had caramel and was AWESOME), but I remember it was SO GOOD and woke me up with a KA-POW (which is what I needed)! I even made my mom go out of the way on a trip from Florida to New York a few years back just to have coffee here again. Yeah, we're talking a good 80 miles out of the way for a coffee drink. Lost Dog Coffee...WOW! I grew up in Shepherdstown. I am what you would call a "townie". I was spoiled with the best coffee at a young age. So- leaving for college and traveling made me have pretty high standards. To this day- best coffee.Eccentric and Interesting atmosphere. Delicious Coffee, local art, and good peoples. No place in town can make a cup of coffee or whatever it is you want (coffee drink related). like the lost dog crew. Of course the owner-Garth is the best barista. The atmosphere is funky, fun and always a good time. I have always considered the lost dog coffee- Home. I have seen the place grow over the years. It gets better and better. New faces behind the counter from time to time but Garth runs a tight ship. Great Customer Service. My only request -I would love to see some live music in there (like back in the day) perhaps on the weekend and during the summer. Iced mocha with homemade whipped cream and pure cocoa? Addictive. Vanilla wet dog? The oddest thing you ever could try in a drink, but once you have had one.... and, I would like to make a comment about the Alice in Carribean: most refreshing summertime drink. Fresh fruit, blue soda, with... NUTMEG on top! It is fantastic! As far as the atmosphere... Shepherdstown is a highly unique, opinionated place. Lost Dog reflects that. Sometimes it may be hard to stomach such temperaments. However, you won't get a better cup of coffee or a truer sence of conviction anywhere else. I might not ever get thanked for all the positive things I say about it, but it doesn't matter. That is reality. There is no true menu. I got to Lost Dog every couple weeks to get good loose teas, so I can't vouch for the drinks or food that are served there. The selection of tea is VERY impressive, and seems to be kept well rotated. The service, though, is simply terrible. Rarely even a hello or a thank you. You don't need to treat me like the Queen of England, but acknowledgment of my sentience would be nice. Like, if I say 'Thanks,' maybe say, I dunno, anything at all in return, instead of just walking away? One time a friend of an employee was doing her homework on the customer side the cash register and I had to reach over her to pay. She acted like I was getting in her way. Employee said nothing, even after I said thanks. That's pretty normal. Today I went and the two girls working there were complaining about how they didn't want to be there and how their job sucked, right in front a bunch of tourists that were paying them. After the tourists left, I stood at the counter and watched them eat an orange while waiting for one of them to take my card so I could pay for my tea. One of them left to talk to her boyfriend outside. The other looked around for a second, couldn't tell if it was to find a napkin for her orange hands or to find someone else to ring me up. She eventually took my card without saying a word, returned it to me covered in orange, and when I said thank you she walked away without saying anything. That's also pretty normal. Terrible! The owner is opinionated and a bit abrasive but that's not my problem at all. He's just passionate, and at least he talks to you!
