The salad was big, with juice grilled chicken breast and a light and tangy vinaigrette. The French Toasts were one of the best he's ever had (his words). The place is big, really clean and spacious. Got the gravy and dug in. Steak was WAY over cooked. It was so dry. The breading was tough and crunchy, burned on the bottom. We tried flagging down someone to tell them, plus all our drinks had been empty for quite a while. After 20 minutes I gave up and attempted to eat around the yuck! Ate about half, but couldn't handle any more. When we were done, we showed and explained why I hadn't eaten much. She said "sorry about that", and cleared our plates. When she dropped off the bill, we expected a small discount for my subpar meal. NOPE! Paid full price! We won't be back. Drinks never got refilled. No one came at any time to see how things were. My chicken fried steak was leather with over cooked breading. Using the excuse that they were understaffed is not the customers fault. As busy as they were, reservations would have simplified things for the host, the servers, the bartenders and the kitchen staff!

We had the House Malbec, from Mendoza, Argentina, and it had a delicious flavor and aroma. It was a full bodied and smooth, dark red offering. For an appetizer, we had the Shishati grilled peppers with pesto/cilantro sauce, and they were just fantastic. They are mild, nicely grilled, and beautifully presented. It is served as an appetizer, but please be warned, one out of every nine peppers is exceedingly hot. We had about 12 peppers, and all of them were mild, so we beat the odds! I've had hamburgers all over the world, and I can honestly say I have not had a better cheeseburger than I got right here from the menu at Blackstock. It's in a traditional bun, lightly toasted, with tempura, onion, cracked pepper, mayo, Tabasco, candied and smoked bacon, and it is served with Hand-cut fries. You can add guacamole for a dollar, or blue cheese or Gruyere cheese for another dollar. But I did not add a thing; it was perfect as it came out of the kitchen for me! You will be asked how you want your hamburger cooked, and I chose medium. It could not have been better! It's on the menu at a very fair $21 including your hand-cut fries. My lovely dinner-date had the petite filet mignon, a 5-ounce offering of spectacular steak, served with goat cheese, potato croquettes, asparagus, stewed shallots, served with a Cabernet Demi glaze at $45. It was a large serving, I believe bigger than 5 ounces, because we are taking half of it home in a to-go box! Again, the food was spectacular... really good. We will finish with the flourless chocolate torte, serve with whipped cream and Amarina dark cherries at $11. If I was a betting man, I'd say you're gonna love this place! Take a few pictures, do what I did, and leave a review, because more people need to know the quality of food coming out of this little storefront on a busy street in Gunnison! They use a mix of red and white oak to control the heat along with a series of movable grill plates. We started with a delicious Strawberry Salad that also had watermelon radish and delicate greens lightly tossed in a vinaigrette. Coming from Arizona, I had to try the Pozole and thrilled I did. The rich red broth gave light to the chili heart of this very complex liquid. The pozole had great texture and the shredded pork was tender and outstanding. An excellent example of this favorite dish. The most amazing entree was the main course. It was a shareable Half Elk Rack. While I like medium rare, when it was brought to the table, I thought it might be too rare. As soon as I tasted it, I realized it was perfection. It was so tender and the chew was great, especially on the end pieces that had an incredible bark on the outside. Elk is an extremely lean dish so to add some unctuous notes, they take Fois Gras, and as the fat renders, add huckleberries before putting it in a blender to create a heavenly base.
