Fries that are part of the Platter.

We were excited to try Louie's Backyard during our visit to South Padre Island, but unfortunately, it was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've had. We started with the ceviche, and it was incredibly dry with very little sauce or flavor. My husband politely asked our waitress (Rosalba) if she could bring some Valentina hot sauce, and instead of simply saying yes or no, she rolled her eyes at him. That immediately set the tone for the rest of our meal. We initially ordered waters while we looked over the drink menu, expecting the waitress to come back and ask if we'd like cocktails. She never did. We were never given the opportunity to order drinks, which made us feel completely overlooked. My daughter chose the buffet because she specifically wanted the king crab. While the crab itself was decent, the drawn butter wasn't even properly hot for dipping. The macaroni and cheese was also disappointing--it had a curdled cheese sauce that was unappetizing. My husband had originally ordered the fried shrimp platter, but after the waitress's poor attitude, he canceled it. Looking at the plate that came out for another order, we were glad he did. For $27, the shrimp platter was a very small portion and looked like a poor value. The fries were average at best, and the overall presentation was underwhelming. Between the inattentive service, the rude attitude, and food that didn't come close to matching the prices, this restaurant fell well below expectations. Sadly, we won't be returning and cannot recommend Louie's Backyard based on our experience.

We went on a Friday in early April (no spring breakers). They had live music and the patio is perfect for drinks and lounging. The drinks are average.....don't expect to call any top shelf liquors. It was a Thursday and they have a special on ribs. The ribs were excellent and a pleasant surprise. There were several servers are solid and they were friendly.

Good service. All you can eat salad bar and mushrooms. The baked potato and mushrooms are huge. Looking forward to sals bar. Crab legs looked good.

    Rice "pilaf"

Only 1 star because I can't put 0 stars. Ordered the southwest chicken with salad bar, garlic potatoes (which was actually a twice baked potato) and veggies. Family ordered tasteless rice pilaf. Flies all over the salad buffet, chicken very dry with no salt (only strong spice rub), twice baked garlic potato was baked a lot more than 2 times because it was very dried out, rice pilaf was basic white rice with no flavor, definitely not rice pilaf. Never again. Edit: manager was sincerely apologetic about the entire experience.

We were really excited to check out this restaurant, but ended up having mixed feelings about the service and the food.. First for the service, while we didn't have a reservation, we were told we would be called in 15 minutes so we waited around near the bar, as they told us to wait there..they never came to get us so we checked in multiple times with the hostess and were finally seated after almost an hour of waiting.. As for the food, it was alright..a bit overpriced because you are more so paying for the atmosphere. The steak was a little dry and had minimal seasoning..the garlic potato was good though!

The food is awful and cold! The wait staff and buffet servers do not speak any English at all! They guard the food at the buffet and serve it to you bits at a time, like they're afraid you're going to get some! Then when you do get some, you certainly don't go back for more because it's inedible! Seriously we paid for nothing! $75 for 2 ppl. We hated every bit of it! Its that bad! The place is filthy dirty and old as can be. I have photos this place needs some serious help.

Bit of a wait, buffet if you are hungry. Crab legs, shrimp and prime rib...good experience for me. Service was good for my table.

Ask the Community - Louie's Backyard

    Are kids allowed?

Yes!. At least outside dining. I don't know about upstairs at the sports bar and for fine dining. Haven't seen any up there.

Is it 18+ for the nightclub or 21?

    It's a full service restaurant.

    Are dog Pets allowed?

Sorry to say, no they don't. Unless they're a service dog

    How much is the buffet?

If I remember right it was $25 per person, but normal dishes were $18-$30 a piece, so in my opinion it was totally worth it. Could have a variety at the one price.

Is the buffet available on weekends?

Yes, it is available every day.

Is this a great place to have a dinner after a wedding for 50 guests? Family friendly? Half of my guests are children under 12 😬

Yes! Absolutely. Just call ahead give them a heads up. Or reservations. Very kid friendly and on the bay so great view.

    Is there a cover charge?

no cover unless they have a special band coming

I was told they were adding a huge tv screen for all to watch your favorite sporting event. It was going to be a much more upscale way of having a cool sports bar for all to enjoy. The food was ok. I ordered a pepperoni pizza for my wife and I had the Mexican style shrimp cocktail. They had $3 Coors Light, so that was cool. We sat upstairs and caught the second half of the Dallas Cowboy game. The Second Visit: Wow! They finished the "new" sports bar side and did a great job! The television is HUGE! So big that if you sit at the bar to watch it, you neck starts to hurt from looking up so much! This visit we had some Jack and Cokes, and a pretty cool mango Chamoy margarita topped with Tajin. Wife really liked that! I also ordered a Michelada which was one of the best I had. The bartender Damon was a cool ol' Navy veteran who had some stories! Nice hit and was really on top of taking care of us and everyone else who came in the bar. They also had karaoke upstairs and it looked like everyone was having fun! I was told by Damon that they're in process of completing their VIP area and cigar lounge. I can't wait to see that and light up a stogie in that area! We'd chartered a fishing trip and had some fresh fillets, so we did their hook-and-cook deal. Hook & cook, $11.99/person -- they'll cook all your fish however you want it, and it comes with sides, sauces, and a drink. I asked for tortillas on the side so we could make fish tacos. Good value, and the food they cooked for us was solid all around. We had a mix of sides -- french fries, onion rings, rice, beans, and fried okra -- all pretty good. On the fish prep: the fried was probably the best, the grilled was fine, and the blackened was my least favorite. Service was really efficient and nice -- the lady working the front counter was super helpful and very nice. The place was clean, the restroom was clean, plenty of tables for large groups, and a large bar area. I also noticed they have happy hour specials. The one downside: the salsa/sauce selection was pretty much nonexistent -- just Tapatío, and the sauces that came with the hook-and-cook were a low-end cocktail and tartar sauce. Honestly that's the one thing about the whole island -- nobody seems to have any good salsa. In general, if you're doing a hook-and-cook, I'd suggest coming here. Would recommend for that, and I'd return if I were doing it again.

Browsed the menu & ended up just getting their "tossed salad". I asked what was on it which was; sliced tomato, shredded carrot, red onion & cucumber. Opted out of the cucumber & requested two blue cheese dressings. My husband ordered their cheeseburger dressed with pepper jack cheese. My salad arrived fairly quickly & it was on a flat plate with a weak portion for $7.75. The two dressings were in taco cups over flowing with a hefty amount of fresh blue cheese crumbles packed on top. Super disappointed with not only the presentation, the cost & never being asked if I wanted my salad prior or when my husband received his meal. I ended up pushing it to the side & was waiting for our waitress to return to not only ask if my husband would like another beer, but to also provide the option of not eating that ridiculous amount of rabbit food-getting a refund OR to bring out more lettuce & ask to please just bring out standard blue cheese dressing without the added amount of crumbled cheese. We don't see our server for sometime, so I went to the hostess asking if she were also the manager which she stated she wasn't & that they were at the bar. That's when our server came up behind me & asked if there was a problem. I explained the situation to her, then she tells me that this dressing is always served this way and that, that is what blue cheese dressing is! She seemed confused about the crumbles & was almost trying to mock me. I've worked in the food industry & know how these product come into the restaurants. Blue cheese dressing does have blue cheese "chucks" within the original recipe. If you are doing things differently then that, it should stand out more on their menu as "homemade" and again expressed by the server, but she made it as if I were just suppose to know their process. It's salad dressing, it shouldn't be this difficult! LOL After this fiasco, they brought more salad and a watered down milky dressing that had zero flavor and zero cheese along with sliced cucumber?! The consistency was like milk. It was running, bland, NO blended cheese in the base-it definitely wasn't blue cheese dressing! WT?! This ALL transpired while my husband was still waiting on his burger & fries . About another 15 minutes goes by, I finally had to just start in on the bland salad. My husband's beer still sat empty & was never told when his burger would be served the few times are server swung by regarding my order issues. 20 minutes later, she comes by again & he was asked if it was cheddar cheese & he said, "no it was pepper jack". A total of 30 minutes he waited for a very rare burger, cold fries & FINALLY another beer! Terrible service and food wasn't very good either.

Our waitress, Marlene, was fabulous. She was attentive and friendly. For our entrees, we ordered the Filet Mignon and the Smoked Duck Breast. The filet was incredibly tender and flavorful, which isn't always easy to achieve with such a lean cut of meat. The beef jus paired perfectly with it. The duck breast was tender, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The highlight of the night, however, was the Key Lime Soufflé. This was easily one of the best desserts I've ever had. The balance of flavors was perfect. Not too sweet, not too tart, just the right amount of key lime. The soufflé itself was also baked perfectly. Every course was excellent, the service was outstanding, and the entire meal felt incredible from beginning to end. Hustle is her middle name... thank you ma'am, you made the evening! The menu was a chef's selection 4 course menu, with options for each course. We opted for the wine pairings with each course. The restaurant was decked out with New Year's regalia... with balloons, hats, noise makers, at every table... really fun atmosphere! All the staff were decked out fancy, looked great! For our first course, we selected lobster bisque mushroom soup. The mushroom soup was divine, absolutely fabulous. The lobster bisque was sub-par... while plentiful, the lobster was not fresh, tasted very fishy. The second course of the seafood medley and venison bites was equally Jekyll and Hyde! Venison, superb, tender, cooked perfectly, tasted great. The seafood medley, all super fishy ... not fresh! Crab claws mushy too, obviously frozen prior. Oysters pitifully small and warm. Shrimp, while cold, were very fishy and mushy, as if previously frozen. No bueno! Our third course was the surf/turf and Akashi short rib ragout. The turf was awesome, best steak we've had in years! The lobster ... pitiful, small, overcooked, tough and fishy! Disgusting! The ragout was good, but we're not sure why chef's make beef dishes sweet ... good beef stands on its own, no need to over season! Not a well conceived dish... Our final course was the chocolate soufflé and lemon cake ... both were terrific! The soufflé with Chantilly cream and whipped cream was very good. The star dessert was the lemon cake with fresh fruit! Light and airy cake, the fruit was to die for. Delicious! The wind pairings were good, although some of the selections were "tired" favs, like "The Prisoner"... IMHO. Such a good wine list at F&B, the pairings were disappointing! The staff whisked away a 1/2 finished pre-dinner martini, which Marlene graciously replaced! When you spend $500+ on dinner for two, even a special evening, the restaurant should deliver. F&B did not meet the standard on New Year's Eve. We won't be back this trip..,
