Even though I could never afford anything from Lounge Lizard, I always like to stop in when we're doing the Hawthorne vintage/antique crawl, because they have such an interesting assortment of furniture, lamps, and housewares, all in great condition. The store is fairly large and usually has several living-room arrangements of couches, coffee tables, and chairs, as well as smaller pieces stashed all over. There's plenty of art on the walls with a heavy emphasis on black velvet. I especially like the decorative lamps, which come in all colors and look festive hanging in clusters from the ceiling. If you're into mid-century modern and/or tiki stuff, you'll find tons to love here, especially if you're outfitting a home bar. They seem to know that most people are mainly there to window-shop -- I don't think I've ever been greeted or asked if I need help, but that's fine, since I'm just there to be a looky-loo anyway. A really fun store if you're looking for just the right vintage piece, and the prices ensure that you get nice pieces in good shape. read more

The prices here are much cheaper than most other vintage Portland shops. With the expansion, there is a very large selection of quality furniture (and lights.) The thing that earned this place the five stars, though, is the service. I had three items in mind that I wanted to buy, but I told the salesman I could only afford two. He asked me which three they were, and that he could make it a "package deal" that I could afford. I ended up saving a lot of money, so I went down to the original smaller location to see if there was anything else I wanted to get. While I was there the salesman that made me the deal at the other location came down just to tell the salesman there that I had just spent a bunch of money at the other location, so give me a discount on whatever I'm interested in! It was a type of service that I'm really unaccustomed to here in Portland. Other businesses should take note as I'm certain to return here should I need anything else, or if any friends ask where they should go. read more

Just popped in for the first time on a slow Friday to take a look around. Some guy from across the store greeted us but was too quiet to hear. We responded with a generic "Hello there!" and then started to look around. The guy said something else quiet and I figured he must've been asking if we were looking for something in particular, so I told him we were just browsing. The guy snapped, finally speaking loud enough for us to hear him "I was just asking how you are!!!" Not sure why he was mad at us because we couldn't hear him and tried to answer him, but we were so uncomfortable after that we just had to go. Don't yell at your customers, dudes. read more

If you're shopping for anything other than custom lampshades, go and have fun. This is a unique store and if you like what you see you're golden. I unfortunately ordered a custom lampshade to replace a two barrel vintage. Gave the owner Christopher the original lampshade and left it with them. The two barrels weren't measured and placed according to the original, so when you look at the Lounge Lizard product there is a gap between the two and you're staring straight at a glaring light bulb. They also used cheap unfinished, rough looking gray industrial metal for the the spokes that attach the shade to the fitter. So standing down at the table lamp it's one of the first things you see. In a show stopping living room lamp. 36" of brass or nickel finish lamp shade wire costs a little over a buck online, it can't be that hard or expensive to include in a custom lamp business. I called Christopher and politely asked what could be done. Got zero response. I should have ordered from Moonshineshades.com first. Lesson learned. read more

Usually I am more of a strict antique store purist. This felt more like a antique store than a thrift store. It is well curated, easy to shop and clean. The staff is super friendly and helpful. There is a mixture of lighting, furniture and home decor. Most recently M and I picked up a really beautiful vintage wood office chair, a globe and a vintage desk lamp. The prices are reasonable but more expensive than big box thrift stores. You never know what you can find here, which is part of the fun. read more

I think what is striking about this shop are the lights hanging from the ceiling. Decorative and beautiful. Price wise.....I would say it is comparable to many antique stores. But if we are comparing it to a thrift store thrift store.....well, I'm gonna go ahead and say that it is a little pricy. Vintage shopping in California (where I come from) will cost you an arm, leg, and probably some kidneys. Vintage shopping in Portland is pain free and actually really enjoyable. We needed a couch for our new apartment and knew with our budget the best bet was a vintage couch. I had no idea what an amazing deal we would get. For under $300 we got a couch, a chest of drawers (with 9 drawers), and delivery. That's less than what we expected to pay for just the couch. The owner was super nice and let us wander around the store several times before we made a definite decision. And he even had everything delivered to us the next day. They also keep their Facebook page up to date so you always know what new items they get in. The only problem with following them is that I want to buy just about everything I see. At least since they have such great prices I won't feel so guilty picking up awesome vintage pieces from time to time. read more

You know when you're reading Yelp reviews and all of a sudden a certain business pops out? Call it Yelptuition. You just know it's The One. You know that whatever you're looking for at the moment -- good eats, good drinks or a good furniture -- you're going to find it there. Well, I had this divine experience with Lounge Lizard. After planning to go for a couple days, I finally made it to the store. I knew my Yelptuition was right immediately. The bright green vinyl chair is what I think tipped me off. Or maybe it was the plastic Eames-esque chairs. I don't know. Either way, I was incredibly optimistic when I walked into the small warehouse space. I walked around the store. Oh no, maybe my future furniture isn't here?! Of course I saw one couch that was perfect, but it was already sold. Just before I gave up I asked a guy who was standing on a ladder, hanging a lamp, if there were any sofa beds. He looked around a moment and pointed to a cream colored sofa. It was perfect. Comfortable to sit on, a comfortable mattress when the bed was pulled out: altogether a well made, good looking couch. After another look around I found a really cool 50s chair as well. After a little wheeling and dealing, I got my lovely couch and chair (plus a gorgeous vase) for a great price. While I was thinking it over, the man on the ladder, Chris, sat down and we talked for five minutes about color accents. This added bit of attention (and welcomed free advice) was great. By the end of our conversation, I knew the furniture would be mine. Finally, after weeks of looking at other stores (both vintage and new), I had found my sofa. What really made this experience great was, for an extremely reasonable price, Chris and another man delivered the furniture to my place just hours after I purchased it. They were really professional and negotiated the weird angles in my stairwell magnificently. Every other place I had gone to quoted me about the same price for delivery, but told me I would have to get it up my flight of stairs on my own. I'm kind of glad now as I would have settled for a couch I didn't like as much as the one I'm sitting on now. So go. They get new stuff all the time. I know I'll be back again for some accent pieces. read more

Recently we were in the market for a new sofa, and while "retro" isn't exactly the theme we were looking for, this past weekend we still decided to give Lounge Lizard a looksee, just to see if anything tickled our fancy. They had quite a few sofas and love seats, running the gamut from shabby and in need of a steam clean (a note on one of them even said that explicity) to nearly immaculate - and many of them were uber cool! Ultimately we found nothing we liked more than that bad ass (and mega functional) Ikea sectional we ended up getting, but if you're looking for something with a little higher "hip quotient", I'd definitely suggest checking Lounge Lizard out. So while we weren't in love with any of the sofas, they did have a ton of awesome lamps, tables, and other funky home furnishings - some of which was priced remarkably low. We almost walked out with an awesome coffee table (which I won't describe in case we change our minds and decide to go back and get it next weekend); it was in great condition, with no obvious damage, but was priced so low I thought it had to have been a mistake. This is definitely the type of place I would have LOVED when I was decorating my dorm room or first apartment, but now a lot of this stuff just wouldn't fit in with our place...unless we do a full on redecoration...hmmm, anyone want to donate some $$$ to help me "stimulate the economy" with a whole new living room? read more

I got beef with this place. (Vegetarian-fake-meat beef, obviously. This is Portland, after all.) Yes, I agree with lots of the reviewers that this space has some great finds and their inventory is displayed in a big airy space, so you don't feel like you're in a claustrophobic vintage cave of brown plaids and burnt orange velveteen. They've got good pickin's when it comes to vintage furniture, at okay-decent prices. But here's my garden-patty-beef: the repurposed furniture is fug. You know, it's mostly the big bulky dresser drawers at the back of the shop. They are like the free-pile clunkers that folks leave on their sidewalks, and this shop picks them up and slaps some bold-colored paint on it (usually in TWO colors, for extra boldness) and voila: instant profit for those with equally poor taste. C'mon, friends, it isn't cute! It looks like a sad HGTV project! If you're gonna do vintage- DO VINTAGE. /end rant. read more

We browsed this location and upon complimenting the owner(?) on how nice their merchandise is and well priced, (but we unfortunately didn't find the piece that would work for us) he told us of their larger, newer store just down the street. (We DID find the piece we were looking for there) Overall, if you like quirky mid-century modern, lots of lighting options (most around $60-150ish), lots of painted furniture (average $200ish though there are smaller pieces I saw for around $30), lots of case goods and upholstered items at prices I could actually afford. read more

I recently purchased two colored hanging light fixtures at Lounge Lizard on Hawthorne Blvd. The store describes itself as an "eclectic emporium showcasing an ever-changing variety of mid-century furnishings, decor & lamps". I purchased a longer hanging light for $179 and a round one for $99. I had a $100 store credit so I put the balance of $178 on my credit card. These were to be the focal points in a guest bathroom in my new home. The fixtures were very dirty.  The metal top of the taller fixture was caked with dust, which I cleaned off with a soft bristle toothbrush. To wash the glass, I held it under cool water, and the color immediately started to slide off.  I did not use anything to wash it other than the running tap water:  no cloth, sponge, or brush.  The color appeared to have been spray-painted onto the glass.  I set it on some paper towels to air dry. The color on the smaller globe did not wash off. Three days later, I brought the fixtures back to Lounge Lizard and spoke with the owner, Chris.  I explained what happened and requested a refund.  I said it looked like the color was sprayed onto clear glass and sold as pink glass.  He tried to convince me this is how it is made:  dipped into a resin to add color.  When I again asked for my money back, he said I destroyed a vintage piece and that he would not take it back. I am very familiar with vintage glass and I know it is not dipped in resin to give it color.  Even if it were dipped, the color should not wash off in plain water.  I believe the item was misrepresented as vintage colored glass.  Depression-era glass has the color infused into the making of the glass .  Carnival glass had both infused color and a coating to give it an iridescence .  Both of these types of glass can be washed without the color coming off. The Lounge Lizard owner makes a lot of reproduction pieces, including lamps, shades, and wall clocks and does his own repair of fixtures.  I don't know what was done, nor by whom, to this clear glass piece to give it color. It was misrepresented as a vintage color light fixture, and I would like my money back for both fixtures at this point.  I do not want a store credit as I will probably never shop there again.  A reputable store owner should stand behind his products and provide a full refund if the customer is not satisfied with the quality of the item. read more

In the sea of vintage furniture stores in Portland, Hawthorne Vintage is the warm & welcoming Gulf of Mexico (mid-priced); Look Modern and the Good Mod are the Mariana Trench (my pockets aren't nearly deep enough); and Lounge Lizard is a polluted beach with "Danger - harmful runoff" signs posted on its shore. That is not to say that Lounge Lizard doesn't have its place. Want to furnish your first apartment with colorful retro-kitsch on the cheap? By all means, shop here. They occasionally have a quality item, but most of their offerings are garage-sale wares dressed up with high-gloss paint in Crayola shades or slightly nicer mid-century pieces with noticeable flaws. read more

After reading these stellar Yelp reviews of Lounge Lizard, we made our way there today in search of dining chairs. Not only did we find some beautiful cherry wood chairs, but we also got a crazy wooden dragon and a beautiful old record from our home state of Hawaii. Unlike other consignment/secondhand stores, Lounge Lizard is clean and nothing smells funny. But the real gem of this store is the owner. She suggested that we ask for a lower price on anything we wanted (we didn't -- the deals were awesome already), and when I mentioned that we found them through the awesome Yelp reviews, she was totally thrilled. The store does layaway (30% down and the rest paid within 30 days -- she called it "creative financing") and delivers for a nominal fee. The owner also mentioned that the stuff turns over pretty quickly -- usually within 10 days -- so we'll probably go back every month or so to get more things for our house. Then, one of the kind worker guys helped us load everything into the car! So check out Lounge Lizard for a really nice selection of vintage lighting and furniture, but also to support super kindhearted individuals who understand what it's like to want a real home with real furniture, even if you're not raking in the dough. read more

The answer I normally give myself is, "No Julia!!! You are not made of money and don't need more stuff!" I love this store and could easily spend a couple hours planning, dreaming up and creating fantasy living, dinning and bedrooms one would see in some fancy design magazine or maybe HGTV!! I could without a doubt drop hundreds, probably a couple Gs on some of the sweetest, retro furniture, the fantastic light fixtures and must have art that rule the showroom. If you have a creative gene in your body or have a love for artsy décor then you need to go check it out! Be prepared for some hefty hefty hefty prices though. This store is fun to hit as part of the Hawthorne vintage crawl. We usually start out here. The prices can be way too high for some stuff, but the awesome couches they get in are mostly priced well. You just know somebodies grandma had them covered with those plastic covers. We bought a couch, lamps and some tables and Chris the owner, cut us a deal for buying several things. He is a nice guy. I love this place: if you want a hanging swag lamp from the 60s - 70s, this is the motherlode, as they have every color imaginable. Also: cleverly chosen, or brightly painted used furniture, mostly with a mid-century or Hollywood Regency flave. Pretty good prices, and they will work with you on them. Always friendly staff. I've always had a good experience. It's dangerous, though, to drive west on Hawthorne, past this place, because the bright and fabulous furniture sitting outside will distract you mightily. I love walking into a store and seeing appliances my mom had when I was a kid. It's like being home again. I don't usually give 5 stars on a first visit, but Lounge Lizard is AWESOME. It's in a great space, and it's not cramped and dusty like most vintage stores in Portland... I could actually walk through the aisles without banging my shins. I found a great retro dining set for a reasonable price. Lots of furniture to choose from, lots of kitsch. But the main reason for the 5th star is the staff. Both gentlemen I talked to were very nice and friendly (but not at all in a salesy kind of way), and they were so incredibly helpful - they figured out a way to get the dining set into my tiny car so that I didn't have to pay for delivery or make two trips. It sounds like they will barter a bit too, but I didn't try because the deal was so great already. I'm definitely going back. I think I need that mustard blender to go in my new 70s kitchen... so don't buy it, OK? read more

I wanted to buy up so many things at Lounge Lizard! The store is well organized and offers vintage (and vintage-inspired) housewares, including clothes, in good condition at reasonable prices. Friendly staff is another plus! Great selection of mid century dressers and credenzas--all reasonably priced. My partner and I have been on the hunt for a budget-friendly mid century dresser for a while, and would have gotten one at Lounge Lizard if we lived in Portland....unfortunately, they don't ship, and that could have been out of our budget anyway. They also have a number of stunning, vibrant fiberglass lamp shades and pendant lights. They shades look like they are newly made, but have that quintessential mid century vibe, and look even cooler paired with their genuine mid century lamp bases. So cool! My partner and I were lucky enough to snag a set of 6 Mode Danish steak knives with teal and silver starbursts (in original box) for $29. I just saw the same set on ebay listed for $95.99! read more

Rarely do you find a vintage store in Portland focusing specifically on furniture and lighting. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of other vintage stores out there that have furniture and lighting. However, it's mostly one-offs. Someone will have a few couches, a few chairs, a few dining sets, a few lamps, etc. But I can't think many places in Portland with the amount of floor space dedicated to furnishing your home with affordable, quality, quirky, weird, cool furniture. Staff at Lounge Lizard is absolutely amazing, too. Travis, Christopher, Joel and the rest of the gang are super friendly and helpful. They go out of their way to help you find what you're looking for. Lots of inventory turn, too. Nothing stays in the store for all that long so it is always exiting and worthwhile to stop on back. read more

This store is located on trendy Hawthorne street. There are actually two stores one block apart. One of them has a parking lot which is a very good thing as parking in this area can be difficult. Customer service is wonderful and all the staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. This is one of few places I know of that custom makes vintage looking fiberglass lamp shades. They have a variety of colors and shapes. See their website to design your own, then take your lamp with you to the store and see what you like best. As for prices, a silk lamp shade is $95+ and a large fiberglass is $95 and likely to laST A LIFE TIME. read more
