Ordered an 18" hollow core door for a small closet. Not a size that is normally stocked (anywhere) so it was a special order. I worked with Ryan. He took the order, and the door arrived about a week later. All good so far. However, the "good" stopped there. When we tried to install the door, we found that they had left no space between the door and the frame in the top left corner. If you look at any installed door, it should have a 1/8-1/4" gap between door and frame so that it can open. With this door, no gap. The door was cut just a bit too wide. We couldn't open it. We contacted Ryan and he acted offended that we had this issue. He immediately blamed it on us and asked really condescending questions (perhaps because I'm middle aged female, though I worked for years as a carpenter and my contractor is an excellent carpenter and experienced door installer). He actually asked me (several times) if we had removed the shipment screws that secure the door to the frame for shipment. Wow! That is a truly condescending question. He said we were installing it wrong. He was sure there was nothing wrong with the door and was very defensive. We sent him pictures of the door showing the issue. (See photo) The door was completely level and plumb, and there was no gap. One of his sales guys even came by, looked at the door and saw the same problem. Since we didn't want to rebuild the whole door, we asked him for a slightly larger header piece (just 1/8-1/4" longer) so we could disassemble the frame and reassemble with a slightly longer header, and he grudgingly agreed. My contractor drove through rush hour traffic to their location to get the new header. Guess what, it was exactly the same length as the previous one. Exactly. Not a millimeter longer. He provide us with a stock header. Why did he waste 2.5 hours of my contractors time to come pick up a standard header? It feels vindictive and unprofessional on Ryan's part. He said that he would provide us with the item that would resolve the issue, but he didn't. And he was rude about it even though it was his error. We finally created a small shim to move out the side frame piece a bit, and the door worked fine. (see picture). This place might be OK for standard, premade doors, but don't use them for a custom door, and don't expect Ryan to treat you like you have a brain in your head if there are any issues. read more

I'm a dog sitter. We watched an Australian shepherd mix that has extreme separation anxiety issues. I left her locked in our bedroom alone because I had to take my two dogs to the vet. She attacked our bedroom door so severely, it could not be repaired, with 1/4" gouges at the door's base. Because it was stained and not painted, the time-honored Bondo repair was not an option. Time for a new door. Lou's doors educated me about external vs internal doors and that the framing was different. Unfortunately this was an external door, so unless I wanted to reframe it, I had to purchase an external door. After picking out a new door, I left them the old one including hinges to provide a copy with the hinges transferred over. What a copy! The hinges weren't off by even 1 millimeter. It slid into the receiving hinges like it had been there for 20 years. It's a solid, good looking door made from naked wood, which I will now paint. I've used them before to get a new front door for a rental property. One of the hinges was off due to an understandable error - the guy measured my old door and for the bottom hinge even said out loud the measurement was 8 & 7/16", but then probably wrote 8 & 7/8". Not a perfect experience, but I was able to rehang that bottom hinge in 10 minutes. They have quality products and when they get it right, they nail it. read more

I worked with Pat, whom was very quick with providing an estimate with the door style I wanted. Once I signed and paid the deposit the door was done in 8 weeks, they delivered the door. The door was primed and prehung. I would definitely order from them again. I even dropped off my door handle since the measurements on the box didn't match the center holes. Their pricing can't be beat -- typically has come in at least 1/3 less than quotes from other suppliers (for the exact same vendors and models). Customer service can sometimes seem "gruff", but this could just be because I'm a property owner, not a contractor (and don't always know the precise, proper terminology). :-) read more

We used Lou's for for most of the doors in our remodel and were really blown away by how good they are. Their best work by far was on custom doors. We had one laundry closet with a 52" wide opening where we needed to put in louvered bifold doors, which typically are made for 48" openings. I called around to several stores that claimed to offer custom doors. Lou's ended up offering us a price that was 75% cheaper than the next cheapest bid, and with a lead time of only 3 weeks (versus 6+ weeks at the other store). We have the doors installed now: they are made out of solid wood, feel sturdy, and fit the opening perfectly! For non-custom doors, Lou's was comparable in quality and price to other major retailers like Contractor's Warehouse. We still bought these doors from Lou's because we like supporting a local business. The areas where I would not use Lou's are if you want a door out of material other than wood or pre-painted in a certain color. In our remodel, we got a few doors with windows in them, which Lou's does not offer. They also only offer doors in raw wood or primed white, so you'll need to paint it yourself if you want a different color. It is true that the people at Lou's can sound a little gruff when they answer the phone. But their workmanship is good and they're friendly enough, so I won't ding them for that. They are prompt with their service and delivery and my wife and I had an excellent experience with them (Thanks Pat!). Advice to greenhorns (like us): Please make sure you go over the purchase order thoroughly before proceeding with the order. We overlooked that we had decided to change the closet doors from sliding to swinging, but agreed to the order with the earlier quote. Even though it was a slip up, since Pat had verbally agreed (not written!) to make the change, he went ahead and changed those for us. Excellent service with great price, couldn't ask for more. As a homeowner and DIY weekend warrior, I have ordered 12 pre-hung doors and 1 window from this company over the past 14 years, so I have a history with them. The products I have ordered are mostly solid wood, simple design with no complicated woodwork...a few with half-lite or full-lite, so take that as a reference point. I can say that the quality of the doors we received is generally "very good", the cost was "reasonable" when compared to big box stores if you consider that you can specify custom details. The turnaround was also relatively quick, 1-2 weeks, except the one window, which took a few weeks. The only reason I do not like going to Lou's is because the employees can be grumpy and often seem like they just don't want to help customers. Better customer service (and tidy up a bit) would make this place a 5 star experience. It really would help. read more

Ryan was great. He's always busy and forgets to call you back, but as long as you are patient and call him, he will take care of you. He advised us on what options we would have for some pretty unique doors that we needed for our detached garage. Specifically we were looking for double doors to fit a 92" wide pre-existing opening on a detached garage. We found an 84" option at Lou's. No one else had anything like this and Home Depot and other places were ridiculous in their pricing, or not wanting to be creative. Ryan OTOH advised on what would be really expensive and what would work within our budget. We were advised that the doors would come in, within 10 days, they took 15 :-). But we weren't in a crazy hurry, so it was ok. They also delivered our doors to our location 40 miles away. There is a minor mistake with the doors, but we will live with it. He offered to make it right, but it really isn't a big deal. They look good. Since I found what we wanted, and they got it done and delivered it, I'd definitely recommend Lou's again. I ordered 9 pre-hung doors from Lou's. They were precisely measured because the openings for my 1940's house were smaller than average. When the doors were installed, all the pre-drilled holes were VERY low. After going over the measurements with my contractor, I figured out that they built each door about 2" too high. They all needed to be cut down from the bottom as they were pre-hung, and now every one of these door handles is too low. I called and spoke to Ryan, the owner, a few times, and emailed him a number of times with no response. They do not stand behind their products/service. I would would steer very clear of working with Lou's Doors. To date, I have sent multiple emails (as he had asked me to send him the chain of emails that I had with Kim) and it has been crickets.
