Amanda and I were definitely on the same wavelength, and she interpreted my hair request perfectly -- I think we were both thrilled with the outcome!!! Wanted to write an update since Sunny has moved on. They recommended I see Rodney and then I wondered where Rodney had been all this time. (The answer is quietly hiding at the chair in the back giving amazing haircuts). He's meticulous and flexible at the same time, which you can see in the haircuts and in his artwork hanging around the room. Also, a head massage master. As for Orbit in general, the staff are friendly and unpretentious. I love the Kevin Murphy products - I had never given in to spending so much money on hair product until these. The house is cozy, though I think the interior decoration could use an update, it's been the same since I've been going there for almost 5 years now. I don't go to salons. I have long, straight hair and have for years, so I have always done it myself. But, I go to this salon because they understand and respect that. I started going to Erin a couple of years ago and she is the absolute best! She helps me to find just the right colors for my hair and does a wonderful job. She knows how to do everything well and is always going to classes to keep her skills fresh. When she washes or rinses my hair, she does this amazing scalp massage! WOW. Anyway, every time I walk out of Orbit Salon, I feel like a new woman with a new head of hair. They use great products that make your hair feel, look and smell awesome!! But getting your hair done is only half of the experience at Orbit. The other great thing is the staff! Jaylen does a great job scheduling appointments that work with my schedule and always with a smile. When you walk in the door, she greets you as if you are the best customer ever. She really represents Orbit well as the first person you see when you go in and the last person when you leave. Not only is the staff great, but the atmosphere is, too. It's not a stuffy, snooty salon, it's COOL! They have cool art on the walls, cool music in the air and cool people that don't make you feel inferior. Orbit makes you feel Superb-ier!! :) read more

One word....two syllables....great hairstylist....awesome artist...friendly... can you guess??? It's RODNEY!!! I have been going to Rodney for maybe a year or year and a half, I'm horrible at remembering that stuff, and every time I go get my hair cut and colored I am amazed. He listens well to what you want, but he's also really great at giving you an amazing haircut if you give him free reins to do anything. He's an artist (a damn good one at that) so who better than him to cut your hair. His eye for detail in the cut, and his eye for what color will look good on you is amazing. He even got me to put a little blond in with my normal pink and black one time. I had always wanted to try it, but having naturally dark hair and light skin I had always been scared to. He said that it wouldn't look bad as long as he found the right shade of blonde for me....and he DID! It was perfect! Every time I go to him he really takes his time and makes sure he gets it just right. I HIGHLY recommend going to see Rodney, for a cut or color. I love this place! I've been several times and have seen John and Amber. Always a great cut and a great grow-out. I have long, curly hair and I'm kind of picky about stylists. They've been great and really understand the curly girl! It's sooooo easy to get an appointment. I use the text option and they've always replied quickly, sometimes even when they're closed! So convenient. The salon is in an old house that's been renovated. It's clean, comfortable, and funky in that Austin way (without being pretentious or annoyingly hipster). On a good day I can pass for being slightly hip, but I have to admit that most salons make me feel hugely inadequate and hopelessly out of the trendster loop. Orbit is just cool - - they treat everyone like they belong there and you don't have to worry about what you look like or what bands you've seen lately. The staff is friendly, the stylists are awesome, and the owner is a great guy with a wonderful vision for what a salon should be. Get on their email list for cool events and art shows. I heard about Orbit from a colleague who was the most stylish person I've ever known, so I figured if she went there it must be good. I had no idea how good it would be for me! Jordyn is amazing. Over the last year, I have had a complete hair texture change and my hair became much more maintenance than I knew what to do with. I haven't had an actual haircut since 5th grade, and Jordyn made me feel extremely comfortable with the whole process. I ended up going with a partial baylage and much shorter haircut to accommodate where my hair is currently at, per her recommendation, and I couldn't be happier with the result. I love John! I've been getting my hair cut by him for almost a year now and he has done such a great job. I have a difficult head of hair to cut too.... I can't recommend him enough. I recently got him to color my hair and it wasn't quiet what I wanted and I told him and he got me to come back in ASAP, corrected the color, and cheered me up in the process. He is a sweetie and cracks me up everytime I go in. Also, one of my favorite perks is the free all over dry trims he does in between haircuts. Basically, it's a quick free cut to freshen up your style. Can't recommend this guy and salon enough. It's reallly relaxed and friendly there with great art work and cool stylists. read more

Really pleased with my first experience here. Found it on Yelp for a good deal and was convinced by some good reviews to book an appointment. I was not that impressed with another place i tried in Austin, and this was different. The two people I met at orbit were so nice and did not rush me in and out like some places. Genevieve owns it with her husband (open 13 years). Going to jump on the bandwagon for good reviews on this guy- John is a great stylist (5years experience). They got me into the salon the same afternoon I called, and he gave tips about long hair and curling technique, recommended products without being pushy, and also paid attention to the picture i brought in and gave constructive feedback. Good if you like for your stylist to spend a lot of time. it took almost an hour and a half total for style/cut, which i liked because it made me feel like he really cared about working with the client to achieve their look. The atmosphere of the place was inviting, not super special but the people made the difference, and it wasn't too busy. I definitely recommend-- Only thing holding me back from going all the time is my budget, and I might try to go back anyway! It's pricier without the 25 for 40 yelp deal but there are incentives like $10 off for referrals (both the person who referred and the person referred). Worth the trip. -Joanna H. read more

I waited until the Tuesday before a Saturday wedding to try to find an appointment for an updo in Austin. Orbit has such wonderful reviews I decided to try them. I actually contacted 2 salons but Orbit's texting feature allowed me to get a quick response so I went with Orbit. Parking at Orbit is the only reason I did not give 5 stars. They have a few spots in back but they were full and I had to park on the street. Not too far, but a bit inconvenient. John was my stylist. He was running a few minutes late and offered a sincere apology. It was not a problem for me but I appreciated his concern. He listened to my minimal requirements and created a wonderful updo. It was the first time I had my hair "sewn" and I was really impressed with the technique. John was not in a hurry and worked hard to get it just right - even starting over at one point. If you are reading this, John, I was the only one who had a full updo and the envy of those who were suffering in the heat. Good call! The bride LOVED it. Many thanks! This salon is so cute. I have been a regular client of Amanda Moore's and have nothing but accolades to give her. She is technically gifted with a pair of sheers and I have trusted my short hair to no one else. What I like is how she walks me through the haircut she is giving me and often provides recommendations. At the moment, I am pregnant and my hair is growing in very quickly. She cuts it in a way that looks great as it is growing in. Lastly, she never pushes product but always teaches me how to use it and how to style my hair giving me the confidence to practice and pull off new looks. read more

I just had my hair cut and styled by a friend of a dear friend named Kristen. I'm saying her name because this lady should be known! The wash/massage took away pain and stress I didn't even know I had.. magic hands for real! Ask for TYLER! He's the best in Austin. I won't get into my extra large head, thinning hair, widows peak and cow licks, but cutting my hair requires some skill. I've had my hair cut by dozens of people here in town, but Tyler is on another level. I've been a regular now for 1 1/2 years. He does great work. He takes his time which is nice, as many places I've been in town run those chairs like assembly lines. With that said, if you have a lunch meeting across town in 30 minutes, he can get the job done quickly, too. As one who has always hated getting a haircut, I now kinda look forward to it. Sunny is a hair genius! I have hard to manage naturally super curly hair and wanted a cut that would look good natural or flat ironed (yes, I know I wanted the best of both worlds). I'd really been looking for that magical cut for YEARS and had always been left disappointed. Sunny worked her magic and I couldn't be happier. No matter how I wear it, I love it...and compliments from random strangers always make me smile. Then I took a leap and went for color. I had been wearing my hair a super light (almost yellow) blond. I'd always done the home box thing (bad, bad idea) and wasn't convinced that paying more for a pro would make a difference...it is after all just color, right? Sunny asked me to trust her, and I'm glad I did. It's a few shades darker than I was used to, but it's beautiful!! For the first time in many years, I love my hair. Attention Curly-Headed Girls! This salon and Amanda is for you. I just moved back to Austin and I went to another salon, initially, for retouch of my red color and a cut. They were nice but we obviously had different visions because I left the salon with rasberry hair and my curls chopped off. Sniff. When I called Orbitz, I spoke with the owner initially and thought she was extremely sweet and very classy. Even though I was offering them new business, she said the other salon would probably gladly want to make me happy with no charge if I wanted to contact them first, because that's what they would want for their clients. I don't think every salon would say that. The salon itself is warm and very friendly. Amanda was awesome. She is super cute, and definitely knows her hair. She explained why I couldnt immediately go back to the red I wanted because of how much blue (rasberry) was in my hair. But she drew up a game plan with her priority being the health of my naturally curly, and, therefore, naturally dry do. We went from the totally unnatural pink it was to a neutral, natural brown until the blue could fade some. She could recognize I was still traumatized from the hair cut and only said we'll trim it when your ready. Several weeks later, I went back in and you could see she had been thinking about all the colors she wanted to use way before she saw me. I love my red now, its back to what I wanted it to be. And the cut was awesome! She listened to me and didn't cut the hell out of it but gave it a great, healthy shape. She turned me on to the Kevin Murphy she uses too and I can really tell a difference. She does shows for Kevin Murphy but is absolutely not pushy about you buying their products. I am so lucky I found Amanda because not everyone can do curly or red. I can't speak highly enough about her. Also, for your friends that want to go short, Rodney, did some unbelievable female short cuts while I was getting mine done. I first came to Orbit after seeing them in Best of Austin. I had been searching for a salon and stylist that made me feel great about my hair since moving to Austin 3 1/2 years earlier. 2 1/2 years later I am still so happy! I initially went to see Ross, but when he left to go back to school I started seeing Sunny and couldn't be happier. Sitting in her chair I get a great cut and usually some belly laughs. Over the years my hair has gone from very long to very short to growing long again. I always feel like I leave with a cute and stylish cut. I am a devoted client and have recommended Orbit to friends. Last week I came in for a cut and a gloss treatment. Unfortunately during my treatment some bleach that must dripped from another client got on the back of my dress and ruined it. I was so bummed! I had just bought this dress on sale and was on my way to an engagement party. I asked that they have Christian call me. On Tuesday Christian called and was totally awesome about replacing my dress! I completely understand that accidents happen, I have been in the salon many times and have never had any issues, but I really appreciated how they handled this situation. I am now even more devoted. I am obsessed with this place! Kali Rambo is a miracle worker when it comes to lashes and eyebrows (and everything actually, but these are the only areas that I had her focus on for our appointments). She is a true perfectionist and an overall wonderful person. I am hugely particular about my lashes and eyebrows. I never knew that microblading could make my face look so much better! She did a great job of sketching everything out, discussing color, and ensuring I was comfortable before going forward with a choice. Additionally, I don't like theatrical, over-the-top eyelashes. She has an amazing way of doing extensions that look natural, beautiful, and professional. She is absolutely not the most affordable for lashes in Austin, but she's absolutely worth it. When I'm not in shedding cycles, my lashes last 3-4 weeks! There's also a reason she's always booked 2+ weeks out. She is THE BEST. Period! read more

Actually, Orbit Salon's proximity to my office persuaded me to check it out today. I walked over there and was in and out during my lunch break, which I really appreciated. Will cut my hair well and seemed like a nice, friendly guy. He didn't have any brilliant new vision for my hair or anything, but he did a great job shaping it up and making it pretty again without losing much length. The salon, located in a early 1900s home, is quite spacious. As the only client in my particular room, I found the privacy and quiet a nice change from chain salons. Apparently, the place might be haunted by a benevolent ghost, but I didn't sense any paranormal activity. Next time I need a haircut, I won't hesitate to return to Orbit. read more

If you're going to chop all your hair off before a family reunion just to piss off your conservative mother, this is the place to do it. It is also the place to get a regular haircut that makes you look and feel awesome. In my case, I went in to chop off the last of my straggly purple hair and start fresh with a Brigitte Neilsen/ Sienna Miller type cut- Ross did an absolutely awesome job and was enthusiastic about cutting my hair that short- believe it not, I've had my traditionally long hair chopped off before and the stylist cut corners (IN MY HAIR) to make it go faster (no thought!)....Ross was very thorough and knew exactly what I wanted. Although I consider myself gutsy, having a stylist confidently cut your long hair off helps, too. The staff their each has their own look, so I felt really comfortable doing something drastic and getting their input. The salon itself is very cozy and fun, and I liked the fact it wasn't trying to be too hip. Cause I am not hip. Pricing is decent and they are open later than most other salons I've been to- so it's convenient if you want to wait until after work to get your hair did. The best news is my Mother loved the cut and called it "spunky". Thank god it didn't ruin Mother's Day. read more

I recently moved to Austin and was super nervous about finding the right salon. A couple weeks ago I happened to be walking down Cesar Chavez and was instantly drawn to Love + Roots. The exterior is soo cute so I immediately looked up reviews and was so excited to see that the reviews were glowing :) I called to make an appointment and spoke with Kiyita who was so so helpful and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. I was super happy that I was then able to get my appointment scheduled with her too because she really seemed to "get" what I was looking for. She didn't disappoint during my appointment too. I read all the reviews about Sunny while looking for a place to get my hair cut in Austin (I just moved down here) and decided to give it a go with the Yelp deal that was going on. I wanted to make a change, and Sunny cut off over 10 inches of my hair for Locks of Love. I was a little terrified to make such a huge change to my hair after years of having it really long, but I was willing to give it a go. I believed some of the reviews, but really... who can be that much of a miracle worker? I WAS SO WRONG-- SUNNY IS!! There is nothing I can say enough about this woman... she is totally fabulous-- she spent SO long with me to teach me how to style it myself, and I felt like I was at a comedy club the entire time. The salon even called me a week after my cut to check up on me and to remind me about the free "dry trim" between appointments. Love Orbit and love Sunny! read more
