Callaloo Cafe - Wow! Jerk chicken dinner

It has been on my want to try list for a while and, thanks to Too Good To Go, I snagged a mystery box of leftovers for $7.50 (retail states it is worth $21). It was hard to find a parking spot but once I did, I went inside to pick up my order. I was the only one inside but soon enough, the owner came out to greet me and pack up my surprise order. I just asked for no fish and he then asked if goat was fine. I was hoping for chicken in my box, but I didn't want to be too needy haha! I paid for a personal pie as well and head out, looking at my box once I got to my car. I was happy to see a generous portion of rice and beans but was a bit bummed that one of the two sides I should have gotten was missing. See picture. Upon getting home, I ate my "mysterious meal" and while I enjoyed the curry goat, rice and beans, and curried chana, I would have definitely chosen different things for myself, like the mac and cheese and the bone in chicken! Ah well. I guess I'll have to go back! I did enjoy the goat more than I thought I would have! Sadly, the pie crust of the sweet potato pie I got ($3.50) had that freezer taste. The filling itself was good but I was disappointed by the too long in the fridge taste of the crust. It was also a little too expensive for its size. Would not recommend. I'll pick up a mystery box again in the future for sure, but I doubt I'll get a dessert again.

The jerk chicken was AMAZING. Like practically charbroiled on jerk seasoning. Flavor inside and out. Not dry! Underneath it was a bed of thick rice and lentils ("peas"). Next to it was delicious callalloo which is basically mucinous okra and spinach combo and next to that was delicious baked macaroni and cheese which was also flavorful and rich. All around fantastic meal that had enough food for two.

Been to this locations many times in undergrad and stopped by recently on the way to the library nearby. Over the years, they have made their regular bowl size smaller, introduced a smaller bowl, then also changed the size of that. It seems now that the small and regular bowl is almost minimal difference in terms of what they are scooping, so if you already know the bowl is a lot for you, the smaller bowl may be more worth your money. For base, my go-to is mix of noodles and purple rice. Their noodles are made of sweet potato starch, so my base also happens to be a good gluten-free option. For hot toppings (black beans, curry chickpeas, bean sprouts, potatoes, and broccoli), you can ask for a total of 4, where "extra" of anything counts as 2 of that. So I get extra beans and extra potatoes, which counts as 4. My favorite 2 meats are their steak and korean BBQ. Well flavored, but again, on the saltier side. For cold toppings, they said they didn't have any carrots and I didn't inquire further if I had to wait for that or not, but that may have been due to me coming at opening. So you may be expected to wait if ordering at opening hour. Otherwise, the front staff were nice. It's pretty empty at opening for dining in. Side street parking there is difficult to get, but there is a lot behind it that is free for 30min (turn into E 115th to get there).

Nothing to write home about. But the seafood rolls were delicious I definitely recommend those. Now, my biggest issue: they had the garage-style doors wide open , and it was freezing. I get the vibe they're going for, but honestly, it made the whole dining experience pretty miserable. If I wanted to eat outside in the cold, I wouldn't have come to a restaurant.

Sunset Kitchen seems like the right choice, especially with its stunning, Pinterest-worthy decor. This was my third visit, hoping for a better experience after two underwhelming ones. Unfortunately, it confirmed what I had hoped wasn't true: the vibe just doesn't match the execution. While the decor is undeniably photo-ready and the bartenders (especially Brittany) bring great energy and solid drinks--the rest of the experience needs serious attention. Over the last 3 visits, my reservation was lost, hosts barely acknowledged guests, and there was no visible management to help resolve anything. We encountered long waits, inconsistent food temperatures, poor plating, and sticky, outdated menus that didn't reflect what was actually available. If you do decide to give it a try, I recommend Brittany's watermelon or peach lemon drop and the crab cakes. Both were solid. But based on all three visits, here's the pattern: something will arrive cold, something will be missing, and you'll likely be waiting longer than expected. Hosts seem untrained or overwhelmed, food service is staggered, and management is either absent or ineffective. The bartenders make you want to come back--but the inconsistency makes it hard to justify doing so again. Sunset Kitchen has all the visual potential, but the service and experience need to catch up to the aesthetics.
