We hardly ever stay in locally owned motels like this, but we had a few rooms booked for a family gathering. My sister-in-law stays there regularly and recommended it. I honestly didn't have high expectations, and if I'd known they were so welcoming of dogs, I would have been even more doubtful. How clean could a dog motel be? Well it was spotless. I was astounded. I don't know what the other reviewers are seeing when they say it's not clean, but this was not remotely our experience. And I promise, I am pretty picky, judgmental, and unforgiving about dirty establishments. Rooms were right about the size you expect for a motel. Not huge, but not cramped, by any means. I expected cheap finishes and supplies, but everything felt high quality and well appointed. Thick, soft towels; comfortable, medium-firm beds; good quality linens. Okay, the shower was a prefab shower kit, and not tiles. There's ya the one weakness I could spot. But the water was hot and the pressure was good so do with that what you will. We enjoyed a family dinner at the picnic tables with a nice mountain view, followed by a relaxing evening by the fire pit. Front desk staff, both on arrival and the next morning, were friendly and accomodating. Continental breakfast was super convenient, if not extensive, but it was a freebie on a very good room rate, so anyone should be ashamed if they complain about this. Who doesn't like toast, anyway? I cannot stress enough how surprised I was that a motel that not only welcomes--but actively celebrates!-- all things dog-related, could be this clean, quiet, and orderly. Horrible business practice- shady motel. DO NOT book with this place unless you are 100% certain that you can stay there. They require a 48 hour cancellation notice- so a family member came down with COVID and I could not longer go. Notified motel and was basically told sorry. They didn't have availability for other dates. They could have at least offered a credit for a future stay. NOPE, nothing but sorry. I was charged the full amount. DISGUSTING business practice. Almost Bates Motel - Completely disappointed. Listing made this place out to be much more than it was. Communal table and breakfast area has been turned into a reception area. No charm, didn't fee clean, fire pits didn't work, pool was lukewarm, rooms were dingy. Not a single guest had a smile on their face likely because they felt like we did. The staff was so nice, especially the woman at check in! The room was nice and clean and very reasonably priced. They had excellent coffee and a generous free continental breakfast. A motel by any other name is just as sus. At the end of the day, it was fine in all the ways it needed to be fine. The room felt clean. The bed was comfortable enough. The property as a whole felt safe and well-tended. But as with any such accommodations, eventually, you see the weird things you probably won't encounter at the Hyatt. In our case, it was the shower which was so narrow that the shower head my boyfriend, 6' 1", at about the diaphragm, and me, much shorter than that, in the face. Also, the towel rack that came off the wall on one side. Also, the lack of a headboard. The continental breakfast in the morning was quite light, but better than others I've seen with muffins, hard-boiled eggs, breads and bagels, cereal, apples, oatmeal, yogurt, and granola bars. All in all, it was fine for a quick stay in Salida. Would stay again, but won't. read more

We stayed here about 12 years ago when it was a Super 8 and it's now locally owned and much nicer! Matt and Barbara at the front desk were very warm and welcoming. The motel rooms are clean and the bed was comfortable. Only problem is that the walls are very thin and we heard everything going on in the room next to us. There is an indoor pool, 2 outdoor hot tubs, a fire pit, and a nice outdoor sitting area for breakfast. The continental breakfast was better than I expected with muffins, bagels, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, cereal, orange juice, fruit, and great coffee which is a special blend for the motel. Gross and cheap hotel with a rude staff. We go to Salida often and this is the worst option in town. Rooms are small and on most occasions super dirty. Like we have literally been given a room that was not cleaned and had to demand another one. The walls are paper thin and the cheap prices often attract the party crowd. Spent one night with loud music blaring and smoke wafting under the shared door connecting rooms. They also don't honor cancellation policies and will try to steal your money. Avoid and go anywhere else. Darn shame. At one point this was as a decent option on the low cost side of things. Now it is just a dump. read more

Well the first thing you'll notice that the parking lot is extremely small!!! If you have a trailer then go somewhere else because I can barely fit in my full size truck, after a 3 point turn I got parked to be greeted by a rude lady @ front desk ! She didn't even ask for my ID , apparently her day wasn't going well and I got the pleasure of dealing with her Get to my room on the third floor with no elevator and the beds have concave belly's from soooo many people sleeping on them so they are wore flat out, I would've slept on the floor but it's fake hardwood !! We were so disappointed when we arrived. It's not really a lodge but more of a motel. The beds were soft but the noise was terrible. We had a work crew staying above and they were drunk and loud. They called us obscene name of a sexual nature. We were very afraid and didn't sleep well. The breakfast was less than we're used to. So we didn't partake. The lady in the front office at 730am had her nose in her computer and didn't greet us. We decided to say nothing and wrote the management the next day. We got a canned reply stating someone would get back with us. It never happened hence, I cannot recommend this place ever. read more

This is a decent motel that is dog-friendly, and the pet rate is really inexpensive. The rooms are clean and hip. Our room was pretty simple: a bed, a small table, a TV, a refrigerator, and a place to hang some clothes. They offer a nice complimentary breakfast. There were coffee, OJ, milk, cereal (don't snooze--those went pretty quickly), toast, little oranges. One drawback: the walls are super-thin. We heard every movement of the guests above us. It was as those the guests in the room next to us (which had a door so our rooms could be adjoining if necessary) were right there with us. Like us, there were a lot of guests with dogs (there's a dog park nearby, too). If you don't like dogs, this is not the place for you. Expect to hear some barking, too. Overall, this is a great value and a nice home base if you're in the area for outdoor activities. read more

A group of friends and I reserved three rooms for a weekend. They said they over booked one of the rooms so a couple friends had to go to a place down the street. The rooms were fine, but nothing fancy. It was very challenging to find parking when you arrived later at night. Frankly, it was the WORST motel I've ever been in, too dark and dingy, dirty everything, towels smelled like bleach, water pressure sucked... But worst of all, was after I drove to Buena Vista to spend time with family gathering for a wedding, I got a phone call that my belongings had been packed away and were in the office because when I checked in the attendant made a mistake that I was staying one night and not the two I had paid for and told I had to stay a minimum of two nights because of the weekend. Terrible customer service, the food I had left in the fridge was thrown away, my suitcases were in the office as I was "kicked out" of your fleabag motel, even after I paid for an extra day. My husband and I frequent this hotel because it is dog friendly and generally clean and quiet. The staff are usually very nice however our recent stay a staff member was rude and acted very annoyed with us. When asked if we could get more towels she yelped at us that there are pool towels and to not use the normal ones with a condescending attitude and the same staff member when I asked if we could stay another night she got snotty saying our room was already rented out and she hated renting a customer another room. My mom and I checked in and noticed a strange smell upon arriving into our room. I then decided to check the sheets and mattresses and there was bed bug stains all over the sheets and mattresses. We changed out of our river clothes and left after 15 minutes as we were disgusted. When your favorite fancy hotel (Surf Chateau) and favorite motel (Amigo) are all booked up, the Loyal Duke Lodge will do just fine. It's actually way better with the renovations than most of the Yelp photos are showing. My husband and I got upgraded to a King room and it had a comfy bed (complete with Pendleton blanket), plus views of the mountains. Even on a cold snowy Sunday evening, we were nice and cozy inside. Bathrooms are still very dated, but functional. Neither one of us took a shower since we had spend the day at the hot springs. Speaking of, Loyal Duke offers discounts to Salida area attractions like Mt. Princeton. And it's right across the street from the indoor community springs as well. Loyal Duke was surprisingly nice, which makes Salida getaways even more appealing. read more

Filthy. This was the fourth time we stayed at the Loyal Duke Lodge. It's always been clean enough in the past so we chose to stay there again. This time was completely different. We have two little kiddos walking/crawling age. We don't expect a hotel/motel place to be perfectly clean so we brought some Clorox wipes just in case we needed to wipe the floor or something but didn't expect what we walked into. When we arrived I went in first and noticed the base boards around the entire room had caked black dust on them so I wiped them with a paper towel. It was thick black grime- so gross. So out of curiosity I decided to wipe a bit of the floor and the paper towel was black from the floor. Pulled back one of the blankets on the bed and the fitted sheet was filthy. We went to the office to get a new sheet and remade the bed. After walking on the floor in the room for two hours the bottoms of our feet were black. This was beyond gross. So we wiped down the floor again, and again the paper towels were black with grime from wiping the floor. There was a strange piece of furniture in the room between the beds that wasn't there in our previous stays. It was some sort of makeshift cloth bench seat. The cloth on the bench was stained and smelled. The room smelled of mold/mildew. The air conditioner vent was thick with black grime. We arrived late at night- with two babies so we unpacked and stayed the night. We originally booked for two nights and only stayed one night because the room was disgusting. When we checked out early we told the person in the office it was because the room was dirty. The person in the office replied with "weird" and didn't have much else to say. I would not recommend this place. It's dirty. Our bathtub was dirty the floors and walls were dirty and not just a little dirty. Very visibly disgusting. The standards have definitely gone way down since our last stay. It's too bad because we really enjoyed our previous stays. It was disappointing. read more

Pulled back the bed to find someones DIRTY UNDERWEAR. Additionally we found chewed food, crumbs, dead bugs, used cigarettes, and blood on the bedding. The rug was full of dog pee. We felt sick and congested while in the room and when we left we felt so much better which could be from the extremely dirty air conditioner. Mold was in the shower as well. The woman at the front desk was super disrespectful. There's also very few parking spots overall. We stayed here to try and support a small business but next time will be staying in a better establishment. read more

Stayed here one night (6/12/19) and have to say we were pleased. This is literally the most bang for your buck in the area. The rooms were small but recently had a few upgrades like hardware, paint and flooring. Their beds were AMAZING and we got an excellent nights sleep. Cute little fire pit area and well maintained grounds. The housekeeping staff is hard working and polite and the front desk is very accommodating and pleasant. I enjoyed this hotel. It's a renovated motel on the side of the highway that is dog friendly. It works well as a place to stay in Salida - it's on the outskirts of town so it's not walkable to many places. But it's clean and friendly, with free parking and a free breakfast. I appreciated how they kept in tough via text in advance of arrival and during the stay. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. I appreciate the hooks by the front door to hang jackets, something many hotels do not have. If you have a dog and like outdoor adventures, the Loyal Duke is for you. read more

I booked this place on AirBnB. I reserved a queen bed room at a rate of $127/night. Due to computer issues they did not confirm my reservation. When I arrived they said, no problem, when their system was back up and running, they would get my reservation handled and leave me a key in a lockbox out front. The room was fine, although it was not the room i booked on Airbnb as it had two Queen beds which i did not require since i was traveling alone. I was in the room for about 8 hours. When I got my credit card bill, they had charge me $200. When I called the incredibly rude manager was zero help resolving the situation and basically said "tough." Don't stay here. You'll pay more than you bargain for for a very mediocre room. I should have stayed down the street and paid what I expected. read more

Unfortunately we had a rough nights sleep and when we finally did get to sleep we were really felt awakened by the maid services radio blaring as they cleaned rooms. This place is nothing like describe on the website. When we arrived the host was rude and did not greet us until we said hello we are here to check in. She just asked for our name and check us in and handed us the key. Didn't say thank you or anything. When we got to the room the floor had small rocks and sand on it. The rug they had little really dirty and the bed had little bit of sand u see the covers. The bathroom looked dirty as if they had not clean it just wiped it down. We stayed for two days and they never came to do our bed or pick up our trash. I felt so disgusted I had to clean so I can feel comfortable. ** Avoid at all costs if you are a person of color or minority religion ** After serving this country for 17 years, this hotel treated my husband like garbage. We chose this hotel based off the reviews & beautiful amenities only to take visiting family (of which are international dignitaries) only to be total embarrassed, discriminated against & mistreated by a intoxicated, racist management level staff member. This kind of treatment in 2022 is just disgusting & unacceptable. The hotel did not apologize, nor try to make their stay any more comfortable, nothing. We will never visit Salida again period & I would encourage anyone else to avoid this place at all costs. It looks cute, but the customer service is anything but cute. read more

Stayed here recently on a ski trip and couldn't be happier! We had a room in the 200's building and had a gorgeous view of the mountains. Rooms have been recently updated, bathrooms are dated but serviceable. Bed/ pillows were very comfortable and the wool blanket was a nice touch. It is very convenient to downtown and to Monarch Mountain. Even on a holiday weekend we were able to get a parking spot right in front of our room. Pool area was really nice, and they've added outdoor hot tubs- perfect after a day of skiing. They are currently renovating breakfast area and had the breakfast set up in a room, but still had a lot of options. They have an outdoor cooking area and a fire pit for less chilly times of year. read more

I had a really great experience staying at the Loyal Duke Lodge - Late August 2021. The woman checking me in let me check in early (she even texted with me the day before/day of). The outside look leaves a bit to be desired, but I was pleasantly surprised when I got in my room. The room was recently renovated and extremely clean. I ALWAYS check for bedbugs the moment I walk into any hotel (even high end chain hotels) - no sign of any insects or pests. I used the hotel pool and hot tub, which was also clean. Decent location for this side of town (I prefer the "downtown" side of town) - the Loyal Duke Lodge is right across the street from the skate park and aquatic center.
