Spacious laid back and well established holiday condos on luscious well manicured grounds. The pool area had a shaded outdoor kitchen, dining tables and chairs, a vending machine for drinks and five large very well maintained BBQ grills complete with grilling utensils for guest use. The mini golf area and shuffleboard next to the pool were cute and convenient. The property had 2 tennis courts and 8 (yes, 8) pickled ball courts which looked new and were overwhelmingly popular. The Waipuilani Park, convenient for lawn games and gatherings, was adjacent to the property and opened up to the beach. The condos at this well established property vary by size as well as renovation. We had C201, a 2Br 2Ba with pool and partial ocean view. The balcony was expansive and the view of the grounds were lovely. The unit itself had a tropical themed decor, had everything we needed and everything worked. However, the unit itself and the furnishings were noticeably dated. We felt that the online photos did not represent the ambiance of the actual unit. We own here and love it. We don't rent it out when we are not here. Lately my daughter has been living here. The property is well maintained. There are four buildings three stories high. It's not too big of a complex so it feels homey. We only have a one bedroom one bath condo. We love it here so much, we are hoping to get a two bedroom here. I know a few owners that own two units. Beautiful condo rented through VRBO. Nice quick walk across open grassy field to the beach. Kinda rocky shore, calm waves, lots of whale spotting. Pool area has nice 5 or so gas grills available for use and a kitchen area with sink and refrigerator. Bathrooms available at the pool as well. Pool is small, but cute and has turtles and other sea life painted on the bottom. Pool water is cold, but there is a hot tub! Jets would not work by just pressing the button, but the emergency reset switch did the trick. There was a dry sauna as well, but I couldn't get it to heat up. We enjoyed our 9 day stay at Luana Kai Resort! They gave us little postcards and even mailed them for me. Bring your own stamps. The condo was stocked with the essentials for cooking! People had left spices etc. they only give you 2 rolls of toilet paper and then you have to purchase your own for the rest of your stay. It was nice having the beach towels available for use. But bring your own laundry detergent to wash them for use again. The grounds were beautifully kept!! Birds singing each morning and they light tiki torches each night. It gave such a Hawaiian vacay vibe. The pool area was enjoyable with the hot tub and kitchen grill areas. We cooked out there most nights. It was nice using the oven outside so we didn't hear up the condo. There is a tennis/pickle ball court available for public use. Bring your own gear if you would like to play! The ocean is a short walk across the field, we enjoyed sitting out there every morning and evening. Walking along we saw so many sea turtles! Bring water shoes if you would like to walk out on the reefs. Such a lovely, relaxing stay!! Conveniently by the ocean! A much better experience than a hotel. read more

The place is really close to the stores and the beach. Even though the unit we stayed at is right next to the road we didn't even hear the vehicles. Very quiet condominium, it is really good for relaxing. The unit is old, it smells a little bit. It is also dark, I wish they could add better lighting. The cabinets and lamps are dusty. The bedsheets have stains on them. The blankets and towels have funky odors. I am not sure if it's because of the water or what. The ice maker and water dispenser in the fridge was not working. Other than that everything else is good.. Checking in and checking out is very easy. I called the manager once on our first day of stay. She was very accommodating and found out about my questions really fast. Parking is right in front of our unit so we didn't have to walk far with our belongings. read more

Have always loved staying at the Luana Kai when visiting Maui. Was always a great place to relax after a day at the beach. Had to take a star off... During my most recent visit I found they shortened the pool hours from 10pm to 9pm and now they send security at exactly 9 to throw out all the families as we finish up our dinner after the sunset. The resort area is cute. It's a the super windy 24/7 here. The grassy area is nice to chill in but very buggy. The beach sucks. The ocean bottom is so rocket the kids hated it and the wind is so strong your pelted with sand the entire time. Out the 6days were stayed we only went to this beach once. So bummed it was a sucky one. Tight parking if you have a bigger car. The pool is small and half the time the pool key pad wouldn't work. Pickle ball courts nice and close but it's busy all the time. Maui adventures! Yay! The Luana Kai vacation condominiums are a respite from the hustle and bustle from the resorts in Wailea and Lahaina. Situated in the heart of Kihei, one can find comfortable accommodations and simple living here while on vacation in south Maui. It was a treat to stay here on a recent weekend with a bunch of friends, whom all were running the 2014 Maui marathon. The experience here was that of comfort and semi private ambiance, but having that hotel feel to it. I enjoyed my time here and can't wait till the next time. The Luana Kai vacation condominiums is located at 945 South Kihei Road, near the Azeka Shopping Center in Kihei. My friends and I occupied B-207 and it was a 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo unit, with a complete kitchen and 2 televisions. It was a cozy little unit, which has limited private parking, but still felt like a private residence. Along with a pool on property, this ocean front property along the south Maui coastline is one of the vacation rental properties to consider when planning a vacation here to Maui. With that said, the room rates can carry from $199/night to $249/night, depending on when you are coming. Still, it's pretty good living and the comfort is above average for sure. The unit itself was very much clean, immaculate, and spectacular. Along with the televisions, came with a sofa to recline and relax, if sightseeing just tires you out. The only real issue with staying at the Luana Kai is that you have to be careful not to drive past the property, since it is easy to. Very close to the shopping centers in Kihei, the Luana Kai vacation rentals can be your staging grounds for a great Maui adventure. The grounds are well maintained and felt safe. There wasn't air conditioning in the unit, but I guess someone didn't bother to turn it on during our stay, but that didn't matter that much. We were in Maui and that's all that counts. In the description it states that a/c is available upon request. We arrived in the evening and the condo was 95+ degrees. It was horrible. We called management at the after hours number and kudos for answering! She told us that no a/c was available. However, she sent another employee to speak with us and she was rude and very gruff. She basically said too bad and that she herself couldn't afford a/c so why was I complaining. When I asked what I was going to do about getting ready for my wedding in that heat and she said "I don't wear make up either." I told her that neither excuse was acceptable - she was VERY unprofessional. The next morning we went to Home Depot - wanted to buy a portable a/c, they are only $400 - I was out of luck as it had to have a way to out of the condo. $400 and the owner of the condo can't afford that - insane!!! We bought 5 fans, of which we left in the condo for the next unsuspecting souls. We had to leave all the window and patio door open, all night - the patio door wouldn't lock. The neighbors on either side of condo had access to our condo. We took our chances and left it open anyway. It was a good 85+ during the night- terrible! We also reported bugs in the sofa bed - the woman who was sent to our condo the night we arrived said "I have them in my condo too!" Ridiculous. It was a miserable stay to say the least. Do not stay here no matter what. The only praise I can give is location was decent, beach was close, and the condo was mostly updated. Spend your money somewhere else read more

Here are some perks: - full kitchen with all supplies - spacious - on-site washer and dryer - balcony with a view of the pool and ocean - a minute walk from the beach - beach is NOT CROWDED! Feels like a private beach - shops are a mile walk away - pool access with grill, sauna, shower, restrooms, vending machine, and fridge - friendly, attentive, and accommodating staff - owner has a Maui travel book for use during the stay, which was so helpful especially when going to the Road to Hana because there is no cell service there. Owner also left a booklet with their top to-go places on the island. So helpful!!! Tips: - Closest place to rent a car is Avis on 1455 South Kihei Road. It's like 1.5 miles away from the hotel - you don't need AC. This room specifically does not come with AC (it is equipped with fans). Decent place, I'd stay again if the price was right. What people have said below is true, the AC costs $25 more per night, we stayed in Mid-November for 5 nights, the first night without AC was fine so we decided against paying for it for the rest of the stay, the ceiling fans were sufficient. Everything the others say below is true, there are several BBQ grills, a pool, hot tub, tennis / pickle ball courts, beach access, I guess someone said there is a Sauna, I didn't see it because I didn't use the pool area. The hot tub was full of drunk old people on most nights so we didn't use it either, therefore I can't speak to how hot it was. It is close to restaurants and a couple grocery stores, which was convenient because a couple of the restaurants on South Kihei road were pretty mediocre, as such we cooked a couple of the nights we stayed there. There is also a nice Lanai with chairs to lay in and also some beach chairs, ah, forgot to mention that the units all have washers and dryers included, again, convenient. There are a few negatives, nothing major, nothing that would prevent us from staying again, again, if the price is right. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed at the resort while in Kihei and really enjoyed ourselves. Here are the main things I want to note: Condo quality: 4 stars Loved our condo!! All of the appliances were upgraded and really nice. The layout was awesome and we had a beautiful view of the ocean. The only downside was the ant problem.... There was a bunch of little ants that would come swarm whatever food or snack or drop of anything with sugar in it. Tons of little ones. It was pretty annoying at first until we got our little system down. However, I have heard this is a problem pretty much everywhere you go in maui.. Fellow resort guests: 4 stars While we were staying there I would say the average age of other guests staying there was around 50 or 60. Just an FYI. There wasn't really anyone else our age staying there. However- the people were SO nice. I sprained my ankle on my last day and everyone was helping me. It was so refreshing to meet such genuinely nice and caring people! :) Resort amenities: 4 stars They have tennis courts, a small pool, hot tub, and big field if you want to bring your dog or throw a football around, etc. The beach is pretty small... We actually never ended up even walking out to it. We honestly just spent every day of our trip at our friend's hotel (Fairmont). The only day we spent at ours was the day I sprained my ankle because well, we pretty much had to. We just craved more than what was at our resort. It was very basic. Overall, we had a really nice stay. It was a nice homey feeling staying in our condo at this resort. It's an entirely different feeling than staying at a hotel. It's a home away from home. Stayed here in September. I'm fairly certain the units are individually owned, so experiences may be very different between them. The location is gorgeous, pool/spa/bbq area fantastic, and the condo's spacious. Downsides of the actual unit: no AC (gets stuffy), weird tiling that doesn't seem to fit in the living room/ bedrooms, very outdated furniture that kind of made me feel like I was visiting a white-trashy uncle's house. Hard to complain about much when you're in Maui, but I do agree that the unit, taken for what it was, was just "alright." That said, I wouldn't mind going back! *UPDATE* Came back a year later in May 2013, stayed in A101 - It was drop-dead gorgeous! Each unit truly is different, as they are individually owned. The service at the front counter and Leslie are amazing! Really above and beyond - I left a couple pairs of pants in a drawer and she shipped them back to the mainland. As one reviewer already put it a nice home away from home. These places aren't fancy. Built in 1979 these places are well kept up but most are nothing ornate. That is not a criticism just an observation. We stayed in 306C which, like most of these 30+ year old units has no air conditioning. The first night we were there that was hard to get used to but after two weeks it was no problem. If I lived here I would want it but that's beside the point. Great view of the ocean from this unit. Not as good as some that are fronting it but nice enough to enjoy each and every day. Pool very nice and well kept up. Enjoyed that almost daily. There is also a sauna and a hot tub. A very nice feature out by the pool they have a full kitchen complete with full sized fridge, with ice maker, etc. There is a bathroom at the pool too which is nice so you don't have to go back to your room to use the facilities. They light the outdoors with tiki torches at night near the pool and there are about five nice gas grills to use by the pool. Nice and quiet at night and parking was only really jammed up the weekend of Thanksgiving after that it was fine. One bummer was they had internet in the unit but you had to plug a computer/laptop into the wall. None of us had a laptop so we were left with using our own data as our devices didn't plug into it. That would have been nice to have. Some units there did have wi-fi though. This particular unit we found was for sale for $459,000. I looked at another one that was completely remodeled and made modern complete with a/c it was going for about $800,000. With a view of the water they can get that price I'm sure. Great location right on S Kihei road so there is a Safeway, Longs drugs and countless restaurants, nail salons and more, close by. Many VBROs. Some more updated than others. All seemingly have great porch space. We went during the holiday season and with the number of condos that are there, it really never gets too busy. At some points the pool area was full, but I was always able to find at least one lounge chair. Seems like a great place for little kids and family or a group of friends. Huge amount of grass for running around, throwing a frisbee, kicking a soccer ball or just walking down to the beach. There are 5 bbqs and an oven outside, in addition to a fridge and freezer. Amazing view!! The main reasons I didn't give it a 5 are because (1) at least for the unit we stayed at, it needed updating, (2) Internet was a pain and went on and off, and (3) it's hard to give a place a 5 when you've seen other hotels and whatnot in Hawaii. read more

Disgusting!!! Don't ever stay at this hotel, at any cost!!! I do not recommend to anyone to stay at this property. Dirty room, no A/C, ridiculously bad customer treatment. Read on for all the details. I booked a stay through Chase Ultimate Rewards at Luana Kai for September 6-10, 2017 (4 nights) and paid $732. Upon afternoon arrival (just after 3pm office closing) I was handed off my keys and assigned room (D-303). Upon entering the room, I noticed the reasonable homely amenities, the 4 fans blowing, and the _lack of A/C_ (temperature outside was near 90F). Lack of A/C was odd because I'd have noticed something like this when I booked it. After a lot of research to verify I wasn't crazy, turned out Luana Kai property listings are misleading at best, and different at the different providers. From what I discovered, in some listings, they say A/C costs $25 extra. Mine at Chase said nothing of the sort, hence the negative surprise. After the A/C fiasco, and a 12-hour flight, all I wanted was to drop off my bags and leave for a walk and dinner. Upon coming back, I started to notice _flying ants_ downstairs. I ignored the nuisance for a while, until it became apparent they bite and they are more than just one or two - room was infested with them. I checked the bedrooms, bathrooms, living room - they were everywhere - on wall, lamp shades, bedsheets, pillows, walls, everywhere. I took pictures just in case I need to prove the deplorable conditions. I tried reaching out staff through a phone number written on a sheet in the envelope, only to reach voicemail. I tried calling Chase only to wait 2 hours for nothing (lines busy due to Hurricane Irma affecting Florida that week). Out of options, tired, pissed off and not wanting to spend a night in Hawaii in my car, I decided to book a hotel I knew it would be good - the Maui Coast in Kihei. I figured the price tag $810 was extremely reasonable given the circumstances and figured both the hotel and Chase would take care of the mess following day and I'll get a refund. Boy, was I wrong!!! I checked into Maui Coast, room was very clean, fresh, pleasant 69F inside and without a flying biting ant in sight. Long story short, for weeks I had to deal on numerous occasions with extremely rude and unapologetic staff at Luana Kai (mostly Mario). Not only did I not get a full refund, I was penalized (!!) for not giving them "an opportunity to address it." My logical explanation that I called but reached voicemail, and that if that room was clean and sanitary I woundn't have had to do anything or call anyone. I was penalized 2 out of the 4 nights. Mario said they owe me $0 but because they feel bad they offered me $257. $257 out of $732 is not even half, more like one third. I told him that to me to accept his $257 is equivalent to admitting I'm ok with the situation and its solution when I was not. All-in-all I spent at least 6 hours on the phone to listen to accusation how it is my fault I want full refund for unsanitary room without A/C. Disgusting!! Comment if you have questions and I'll try to provide you with all details I have. I'm reporting this to the Maui department of health and considering legal options to get my money back. read more

This was the perfect location for us with two bedrooms (A104), a living room, and full kitchen that were feet away from the ocean. We walked out the front door through the grass and to the quiet beach. The waves are mild here and you are minutes away from restaurants and local attractions. This was a safe, clean place for five night vacation with a nice pool area that you can also bbq and use the outdoor kitchen and fridge. Great ocean views. I found this place by booking at Orbitz.com and the pictures of the vacation condos was very appealing and immaculate. When we got there at Luana Kai Resort, the condo itself was a dire need of major remodeling. The furniture in the condo are outdated, I think it's from the 80's and the carpet is dirty. The housekeeping does not do a good job cleaning the place. I don't think they had the furniture has been steam cleaned and sanitized. The gross thing was the couch pull out bed. DON'T EVER SLEEP THERE!! I don't think they changed the sheet on it because it was full of unknown bug or mice droppings inside the sheet. I state the problem to the front attendant there was unknown organic matter in the sheet but the property management took a long time for them respond to my request and didn't even clean the bed. I felt staying in the condo was a 1 star old motel but paid a four star hotel price. Customer service in Luana Kai are weak and the property management is not doing a great job inspecting the condo. The only thing that I would not complain was the ocean views! That was the best!! However, I would not stay here again and I would NOT recommend this place to anyone if you are staying in Maui. It's better to stay in a nice resort and be careful of vacation condo because you never know what you are paying for. A lot of them are with outdated furnishings. read more

We met friends and enjoyed our condo in building D. The view cannot be beat from your lanai, the beach is about a football field away which is a plus so you don't have all the foot traffic right in front of you from beach walkers. Well equipped kitchen and a nice flow of trade winds to allow you not to use the air and enjoy the Maui fresh air. The owners are mostly 50 & over with young families visiting or using the amenities. Lovely tiki torch lit walkway in the evenings. My only complaint is the families of owners not following pool rules as far as jumping & swim diapers, a turn off when trying to relax by the pool. read more

After a quick run to Costco (by the airport) we were able to take advantage of the great outdoor grilling areas for most of our dining needs. The pool deck also had a kitchen area including a fridge, freeze, and sink which was an added bonus. While spending time cooking and with friends we took advantage of amazing sunset views! The pool was the perfect size for all vacations and the hot tub was an extra bonus! Plenty of deck chairs, loungers, and tables made the pool deck a great gathering point. This location was perfect in the evenings and early mornings while we spent our days exploring Maui and all it has to offer. We had a very enjoyable experience here, stayed 5 nights in our first booking. Check in was smooth, pleasant and informative. Leslie and the manager Mario was very courteous and informative. I told him that we are looking for a place to eat good poke. He recommended 3 places and even marked them on a map. We went to #EskimoCandy and wow, thoroughly enjoyed the many variety of poke flavors there, also had the #FishandChips. The room that we are in is the "partial ocean view" room C305, not ocean front but we loved it. From our third floor balcony, we had great view of the pool area and the putting green is right below us. Our 2 room suite has a king bed, 2 twin beds plus a sofa sleeper, perfect for our family of 5. The beautiful beach is about a 2 minute walk across beautiful plush landscapes. Only one minor issue, the entrance into the master shower is a little tight, even for myself at 5' 7", 190 pound. Anyhow, to me that is a small matter, and guess what, I cancelled our bookings to our next condo and ended staying here an additional 6 nights (saved about $1200). VERY IMPORTANT - if you like cool rooms, remember to tell to add AC, only cost extra $25 daily. You may want to call and ask Leslie or Mario to ADD AC before you arrive to ensure you have a cool room by the time you walk in, when i was at the lobby the second time I overheard a couple coming by saying they couldn't go to bed because it was too warm and uncomfortable. You definitely want to avoid that on your vacation. My other favorite, in the morning I could hear all sort of chirping from birds in the yard, while enjoying the gorgeous and peaceful view and sipping on my cup of Maui coffee. I highly recommend this condo, being reasonably priced, clean, quiet and managed by great cheerful staffs, thank you Leslie and Mario.! read more

The resort itself is great. Nice bbq area right by the pool and it's located close to shopping and grocery stores. It wasn't super easy for me to find on my iPhone map app. Every time I punched it in, Leilani Kai came up. But once we finally found it, it was easy to get to and from. The only issue we had was our room was pretty out dated. We rented room A302, great view, but like I said outdated. The sliding glass door to the lanai kept getting off track as well as the sliding door to the closet where the washer and dryer were. I kept worrying it was going to break. Also be aware these places don't have air conditioning so we had to keep doors and windows open, with the screen pulled so no bugs would get it. read more

Leslie the site manager asked for 25$ per day for AC and we gave our credit card details for payment. The AC stopped working at 2 30 am and my kids woke up screaming. We are a family with small children , the property is beautiful, the condo is clean and staff is extremely kind and helpful , Leslie ( not sure if I spelled her name right ) even went out her way to let us stay beyond our check out time because our flight is much later during the day. Decent location, nice pool and hot tub, but the beach near this property isn't very nice. Units are privately owned so their condition varies greatly. The one we rented was fully refurbished with nice materials and modern design. Others haven't been refreshed much since the 1980s. read more

This place is affordable and typically decent. I've heard from others that some of the units are yucky but they're individually owned so that's the owners fault. The location is great for families or couples who want to save money. It's not a tourist town, locals live in Kihei, so there's a lot to do and lots of affordable restaurants and shopping (not tourist prices!) you can live like a local here. There's a pool with barbecues and nice bathrooms and soda vending machines, a huge and beautiful lawn area, it's beachfront too! Other places in Kihei are affordable too but this is the only Kihei location I've stayed at. A really good, close place the locals eat at is called "Da Kitchen", its Hawaiian fast food (comparable to L & L Hawaiian Barbecue). If you're not on a budget stay at the Grand Wailea! Ohmagosh! If you can afford to splurge go there! I stayed there for the pool(s), there are about 7, pools on a hill so you can take a waterslide down to the next and the next...heaven! But when on a budget Luana Kai is heaven! Don't forget to check out the yard sales and consignment shops in Kihei!!! read more

We're currently staying here and not much to say. The condo is pretty dated but it works. The family and I aren't spending a lot of time in the condo so it doesn't really matter what it looks like as long as it's comfortable when we're there and it is for the most part. There is a lot of area for the family to unwind. The pool is great and it also has grills to have a cookout on. What turned me off the most were the several cockroaches through out the condo. We're afraid to leave anything on the floors. The pool and the small beach nearby are great but I can't stop thinking about the cockroaches. read more

I loved how close we were to to the beach. We raven saw some sea turtles! The pool and hot tub were very nice. I was disappointed with the bed. There was something on the sheets that gave me a rash, that was not very fun. We did kill 2 cockroaches while staying in the unit. Some of the lights were burnt out and the AC made an awful noise when we turned it on. It was an experience. read more
