My boyfriend lives in Troy, he's an RPI man, and usually when I come up here to visit, the same story unfolds. I get out of the car and drag him to Dinosaur BBQ and that's that. And while Dino is great, I thought it was time to check something else out. And I fell in love. We went around 10/1030 on a Friday night, and the atmosphere was very warm - dim lights, candles, friendly faces filled with love, wine and cheese. We sat in the back underneath an awning of twinkling string lights at a long wooden family style esque table. 10/10 on the look and feel of the place. We saw a friend and sat with them but even if we didn't I'm sure at least 4 people would have said hello. The wine list was very good, many selections - I picked an Italian Pinot Grigio and it did not disappoint. We had an order of the Olive Tapenade to start and I could eat that 4 times a day without getting tired of it. For dessert, we had chocolate hazelnut mousse cake in a mason jar and it was AMAZING!! See photo and melt away in jealousy. To conclude, what an amazing spot. Great for date night like we did it, or a nice night out to chat with good friends. Good wine. Good food. Good people. The atmosphere is great it's absolutely the perfect place for a first date if you just want to get some drinks and see where it goes, no pressure to order a big meal. I love and fear The Confectionary. I love it because not only is it beautiful inside but also because everything is so freaking delicious. I fear it because in the two weeks that it has been open I've already spent way more than Mint tells me is acceptable for my budget. Whoops. This bar has something for everyone. My boyfriend and I are on opposite ends of the wine spectrum but we both find something new and tasty every time we come. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. It doesn't matter if you don't know what you want because they can answer all your questions and are eager to offer you a tasting so that you can be sure you like something before you order a glass. Also, I may be a weirdo, but there's something heartwarming about seeing the owners working side by side with the staff. Since there is a decent selection of unique and micro-brewed beers, even our friends who don't like wine enjoy coming here. The food is delicious and once again there is something for everyone. The portions are not huge, but this is really more for tasting and snacking. However, that has not stopped us from ordering just about everything that is on the menu and enjoying a dinner of cheese and cured meats. Where else can you get applewood smoked duck breast or artisan cheese with a beramont oil and black tea rub? The savory tarts and pies that are made locally (but not in house) are also amazing. On our last visit we got a sample plate of 5 meats and cheeses of our choice for $20, two single serving savory tarts that were $5 each, and the mini flight of pies that we ordered was $6. We ordered 2 glasses of house wine for $6 each (which is still VERY good, with 4 different wines on tap - yes, tap!) and one glass of port. All together our bill was about $55. If memory serves me right, there is talk that in the future they will be serving coffee and sandwiches in the afternoon. This is my favorite spot in Troy, and certainly my favorite wine bar in the region. It's a wonderful place for a catch-up drink with friends. I'll admit I seldom have ordered wine from the list, and have stuck to whatever special they're pouring at the moment, but I have not been disappointed. You'll find by-the-glass prices ranging from something like $9 to maybe $13. The menu is small, and I don't know that I'd visit here for dinner (with one caveat, to follow). The snacks are nice, particularly the olives and hummus, although I'd recommend a cheese board at any time. Said board may take a little while to prepare (something about cheese temperatures? Yes?), but your wait will be worth it. You'll find almost Portlandia-style artisanal lightbulbs, wood, tile, and glass throughout the space. Lighting is on the darker side, which gives the place a nice, moody feel. Let me also recommend the stand-out family-style dinner I shared with some colleagues recently. This is where I would unhesitatingly recommend this joint for dinner. For $360 for 6, we had four courses, with several options for the dinner course, and three wines paired with the dishes. I love reading other peoples reviews. One person called this place "Hipster" and "boring re purposed blah, blah, blah" If Troy history is hipster and boring, if a passionate couple who not only built this masterpiece, but are always there to show guests around are boring, then I guess I am boring, but I am definitely not hipster lol.... Small plates are interesting, tasty, and fun. It is not quite a tapas bar, but more a place to munch on yummy cheese, salty meats, hummus, and other cool stuff. The new market that is attached has some great stuff and I have to admit to spending a little too much on meats and cheeses. You can buy a great draft beer, or glass of wine while you look around, How cool is that? There are no photos that can do this place justice. Ever had a review removed by Yelp admin? I just did. Said my review didn't "describe a firsthand customer experience." I admit it was a short review, simply adding my thumbs up to the favorable reviews already here. Sometimes short feels right, but if they say that doesn't work, I guess it doesn't. That said, I am a huge fan of this place and will go to the trouble of writing another review. I've been to the Confectionery four or five times now. Loved it from the first visit and now feel like family. I get the sense that everyone is treated as well. The owners, Vic and Heather, and the rest of the team (shout out to Lucas), would alone make this place a treasure, but add the food (vegan small plates!), wine (love everything on tap!), the espresso (blue bottle beans, a top shelf vintage machine and skilled baristas!) and the fellow customers (I've had conversations with half a dozen, but I only remember Michael's name) and the sum total makes this a place I hope to visit regularly for years to come. Am I really in Troy? I am IN LOVE with Lucas. This is such a beautiful space with a vintage like feel. Pictures can't even do justice. This is the spot to be with the perfect ambience whether you're on a date or want to catch up with friends. There's plenty of seating and there is also an outdoor space! Everything is well thought out and beautifully restored. After talking with some of the staff, I found out this used to be an abandoned building. About a couple years ago, they renovated and restored the beauty of this building. They certainly did an amazing job. The food and wine are just as amazing as the space, decor and ambience. The autumn salad was surprisingly big in portions and just as delicious. The combination of the burrata, tomatoes, roasted pumpkin seeds, and spring salad mix was super yum! The white wine that they recommended was also superb. I don't know the next time I'll be in Troy but this will be my go-to must visit spot. If I had lived here, I would certainly be a regular at Lucas Confectionary. If only they existed when I went to RPI! read more

We went in just to check it out and have a glass of wine. This is a cool place with a nice vibe and cool small plates menu. The sweets we tried (mini pie flight) were pretty meh though, hence the 3 Stars. It'll probably get bumped up upon return. Wine- 4 Stars The wine I had was on tap and was very nice. I'll be back to try more. Food- 2 Stars The small desserts we got, the mini pie flight, was severely overpriced. They just didn't have enough flavor for the tiny amount of filling you got and ended up more like flavored jelly in a little teeny undercooked pie crust. Pass on those for sure. Atmosphere- 4 Stars The atmosphere is awesome overall, but we found the stools, while cool looking to be pretty crappy for actually sitting on. Service- 3 Stars Service was inconsistent while we were there (busy Friday at like 9ish), we sat there for a while because there were waiters, but nobody ever came. The wine list is solid. ...With a by-the-glass option to satisfy any desire. Also, the offer by the staff to taste a wine prior to ordering a full glass, is really terrific. I'm a sucker for prime charcuterie; the Duck Salami and Bresaola are most noteworthy. I also love the Cheese Monger's Plate; a pre-selected assortment (i.e. a surprise) of beautiful artisanal cheese. (You'll find charcuterie and cheese options sourced from local/regional farms/butchers. Great!!) The hand-made chocolate truffles are exquisite. The decor is modern yet warm. Artistic yet relaxed. Original architectural aspects of the old building were tastefully preserved--some played upon to elicit nostalgia. My evenings at the CFLC have always been fun and wonderful. Brilliant! An artistic creation of reusable materials in the most beautiful wine bar I have EVER seen. This place could just as easily be located in The Mission, Chelsea, or Ann Arbor. I can't believe while walking back to our hotel from a concert at the Troy State Bank Concert Hall we stumbled upon the magnificent gem by accident (or providence.) The interior is so warm and inviting you really never want to leave. The lighting is magically created with soft Thomas Edison filament exposed light bulbs. There are candles burning on all tables with fireplaces in random places throughout. The table tops are repurposed marble and it creates an elegant feeling when you sit down your glass of wine that was pored in a delicate Reidel glass. Wow! While visiting from Michigan we made numerous local friends on a cold snowy Tuesday evening ... and the place was packed and bustling (yes I said Tuesday ...) We even had the absolute pleasure of meeting the delightful young proprietors, Vic and Heather. So warm and friendly you just want them to succeed on this epic business path. Oh, and yes they designed and did most of the remodeling themselves...clearly not afraid of heavy lifting and plaster dust! The whole evening was eventful and the Downtown Area of Troy must be thrilled to have this business create such a memorable experience for out-of-town visitors! On a recent business trip I happened upon the Lucas Confectionery. This is a Really exceptional place, I loved the vibe, decor and lighting. It has the look and feel that I could easily be in SOHO or San Fran. Great wine and beer selection's, they have my favorite beer, the Ballast Point Sculpin, which I took as an omen of great things to come. The service was excellent, warm and friendly ...a great team. I have never ordered food here but this is a great place to stop in after work and just forget about the hustle and bustle of life. Wonderfully enjoyable. We went on "Troyster Tuesday" to enjoy some oysters & charcuterie plate. Everything was delectable. The charcuterie (pate, salami, etc -- the selection changes frequently) comes with accompanying cheese, chutneys & other nibblies. The staff is super knowledgeable about what everything is, where it's from, how it's made. My only gripe, the oyster shucker left some shell shards that I had to spit out. I don't spend a lot of time in Troy other than the Music Hall. It's a very cool city in some regards..there's also a dank and dark to the town which kind of keeps me away. There are parts of it that sort of reminds me of weedle worthy vodka in the paper sack vibe of Springfield MA (which for some of you needs no explanation.). Having said that, it's probably the center for the most eclectic dining in the whole CD area. One of which is my favorite stops...Lucas is a truly warm delightful locale. Dimly lit, dark natural wood flooring, old NYC style tiles behind the bar, and semi-open garden in the back. Also, directly connected to the Peck's Arcade which is a wonderful place on it's own. The food selections are minimal at Lucas, but the charceuterie plate is a nice collection of local (a lot of VT and NY) cheeses and meats..along with an eclectic mix of beer and wine (a fair amount from Livingston NY when I was there). Lovely bartender as well. This is a very mellow spot for conversation with your friends and quite cell phone free as well (noticed that...quite nice in the modern age). read more

If you're looking for a great place to hang out and have a glass of wine, beer, or cider, Lucas Confectionery wins hands-down in Troy. The ambience is hip but not hipster, with exposed brick walls, reclaimed wood on the walls and bar, metal-and-wood tables, metal high-top chairs and stools, and glass lantern lights hanging from the ceiling. The front section is where the bar crowd hangs out, and the back is more for duos and small-group conversation. There's even a charm-the-pants-off-you garden courtyard in the back. And thank the great god/goddess/higher whosiwhatsit, there's nary a mason jar in sight for the drinks. (I might dock them a half star for busting out the jars at dessert, but said dessert -- a hybrid chocolate cake/tiramisu-style layered sweet -- is so tasty that I'm willing to overlook it.) Make no mistake: Lucas Confectionery is a wine bar. You won't find substantial food here, but what they do have is well prepared. The cheese boards are nicely presented on slate, with the varieties chalked above each. They could stand to be a bit more generous with the accompaniments -- you'll get a smear of chutney or a couple dried-fruit slices for each -- but the cheese selection itself is excellent. There's also charcuterie (which I didn't have, so can't offer an opinion there) and a handful of small plates, like olive tapenade, hummus, marcona almonds, and mixed olives. Pretty standard wine-bar stuff, so if Lucas Confectionery could improve in one area, it would be by breaking away from the formula and providing more unusual food selections. The drinks list, however, is a thing of beauty, especially if Euro and West Coast wines are your jam. Gamay Noir from Burgundy? Check. Sicilian Nero D'Avola? Got that too. Scottish ginger beer and pear cider from Spain? Double check. I'd love to see more Chilean selections, but that's pretty nitpicky. The fact is that list is well edited, and the bartender, Eric, is super knowledgeable and helpful, so if you're on the fence about what to try, let him steer you in the right direction. read more

I initially wrote a mean review about this place and regret being such a jerk about it. I've been here three or four times now - it's a nice civilized place to meet with friends. Good patio and flattering lighting with a pleasant water closet. They used to offer a lot more food, but since Peck's Arcade opened, the menu has been downsized and now includes mostly cheeses, pate and small plates. The wine prices are jacked up and the pours are not heavy. Beer selection and prices are nice. Table service is somewhat formal at a casual pace. read more

A wine bar is generally not something I would make my way into but I am happy I did. I have never been much of a wine drinker but could not help but love the inside of Lucas Confectionary. They definitely have one of the coolest outside areas with the ability to close the glass roof! For anyone in a similar boat that has swayed away for the reason of not being a wine fan give it a shot. They DO have beers as well as the wine, and honestly always have a great selection with a few rare bottles or drafts available. Have been many times previously but not recently. Last night I was disappointed. The cheese plate seemed smaller then the already small portion and more pedestrian flavors then normally served. I was also very disappointed in the wine. I have absolutely loved going here for the interesting, complex wines served. The wines we tasted and had were good enough but not enough to bring me back. I completely love the idea of using natural/biodynamic wines but the ones I had (and we tried all reds on the menu by the glass) all were ones I'd buy myself and drink at home as more of a cheaper but more complex version of table wine. And when I looked at how much those we had cost by the bottle in a wine store I was even more disappointed, two of them were cheap wines by the bottle. From the vintage china under the small plates and sweets to the lovingly restored and salvaged fixtures of the old candy shop - a true gem. The funky rustic industrial atmosphere is both hip and inviting. The wine selection is comprehensive, but with just enough unknowns to tempt you into trying something out of the ordinary. A good variety of food offered to compliment (not compete) with the wine. All in all, a perfect place to spend an evening. Ohhh my gosh. I cannot say enough good things about this place. It is definitely my new favorite place to go in the area. Everyone should stop reading this review and head over :) Anyways, it is located in somewhat of an inconspicuous spot, and may be easy to miss. When you walk in you will without a doubt immediately fall in love. It is super cozy and has a trendy rustic vibe. The atmosphere is really top notch. There are several spots to sit and it just feels very intimate even when it is packed. It can be somewhat hard to find a spot to sit if it's packed, but I've found that as long as you have your eyes open you can get a spot fairly quickly since people tend to come and go. I have tried a few of their white wines, all which have been great. My friend who I've gone with has always tried reds and he has enjoyed all of them as well. We also tried a few of their cheeses which were really nice and served in a really cool way on a stone slate with what it was written under it. The wine list is quite long and you can opt to get a bottle, half bottle or glass. They also will let you try whatever you would like before you choose what to purchase. The service has been excellent when I have visited, although I may be a little biased since my friend works there. But, I have had other servers and they have been very knowledgeable and friendly. They have been helpful giving suggestions since I honestly don't know a lot about wine. You can order from the bar or have a seat and somebody will serve you. They come around every so often to see if you need anything, take away empties, etc. This is just the place Troy needed and I am so happy that they are doing so well. It is kinda dark inside of Lucas Confectionery. It isn't huge either, it is a smallish space. Intimate, some would say. Exposed brick. Awesome indoor/outdoor/outdoor patio. Also, they absolutely dominate their food and drink game. My wife and I have been to LC three times. Twice just us, once recently for a private party on the patio. I'll say this to start: All three times, we enjoyed our food and drink immensely. We had a great time. We looked forward to next time as soon as we left. Our first visit, for my wife's birthday, was in February of 2014. We ordered a 5 piece charcuterie board, served on a stone slab chalked to show which item is which. We loved the choices, the various meats, paté's (how do you plural paté), and cheeses. The wine and beer selections were varied and all showed promise (tbh I know nothing about wine, but I know my beer and the choices were solid). It's a little dim inside, and you might be sitting close to people, but we were fine with this and loved the space exactly as it was. Second visit: Random date night. Similar charcuterie and drinks, but we expanded to dessert. The desserts were rich (we picked chocolate items) and we loved every bite. More of the first visit, and more to love. Our third visit was just this past weekend for a private party on the patio. We had never been out there, and we loved it. The weather was perfect, the roof open and exposed to a perfect 71 degree evening in may. The foods set out for the party (three cheeses, three meats, two types of sandwiches, and crostinis) was all very good. We had never tried the sandwiches before the party and we were very happy with both (one italian meats, my fav, and one turkey with...swiss maybe, still excellent). Knowing how nice it is, I'm tempted to spend more time out on the patio; not sure if they allow smoking on the patio or not but it seemed most people step away and walk into the alley behind the patio to smoke. Overall Lucas confectionery is a place for great wine, beer, charcuterie, talking, relaxing, date night, night out with friends, a private birthday party, and anything else you might want from a medium-quiet, cozy space with tons of character. There are zero TV's, zero drinking games, no fancy couches, no BS. Plan to spend more than a run of the mill bar (most drinks are between 7-12 bucks), but surround yourself with some good company and head to LC for an enjoyable night. read more

To be honest, this should probably be a 4 star review. But I'm not really a wine drinker, so this is just a regular guy's point of view. They have a pretty respectable selection of fancy craft beers, but none of the blue collar low brow stuff. I wish they'd just stash some Miller High Life under the counter even if they poured it into an unmarked glass and didn't advertise it. Anyhow... It's an outstanding space, with original exposed brick and great neighborhood feel. The staff is both polite and very nice - never had a single unpleasant remark from anyone. I want to give this bar 4 stars, but the music is always so loud that I can't hear the other people at my table. There's no reason for the music to be blaring at that volume; I just don't get it. I would definitely stay and drink here if they turned down the music. The setting, clientele & staff outweigh the snotty beer selection, but no beer is tasty or cold enough to overcome obnoxiously loud elevator music. One of the most interesting places to explore in Troy. They did an awesome job with the renovations, and the interior (beautiful exposed brick, Edison style bulbs, tile, and glass) leave you feeling like you just stepped in to an old world secret with a modern, but classic touch. They have a wide variety of excellent wines to choose from ranging from inexpensive to moderately priced...so perfect for any budget. Have I mentioned...the coffee? The Confectionery carries blue bottle coffee, and their baristas are the best! Tuesday night is Troyster Tuesday! Each week they feature new varieties of oysters. Friday and Saturday nights get a little bit crowded so if you prefer quiet evenings choose...Sunday through Thursday. Ive been to Lucas confectionary several times and have always had a great time. The rustic decor and dimly-lit ambiance are very inviting! It is an excellent date spot or locale for girlfriends to catch up. I cannot remember if the flight options were listed on the menu but I knew enough to ask (gives you more of the "full experience" of a wine bar).
