What I got was definitely not general gau chicken. it tastes like spoiled duck sauce with a TON of salt on less than pleasant chicken chunks. No sweet and spicy taste. No. Just no. I ordered on Thanksgiving. I usually cook, but unfortunately, I had a death in the family that just didn't sit right with us to cook and celebrate, so we all did our own thing. I decided to give Lucky Dragon a try. I'm not picky, but for the prices they charge, the portions you get, and the quality of the food just does not add up. When you order online, you're able to choose a pickup time, I chose my time and received a call 15 minutes prior to my pickup time, asking where I was and how they wanted to leave because they closed "soon", soon being 9:30 and they called me at 9:05. I explained I put my pickup time because thats how long it would take me to get there and them cook the food, etc. I could see if I ordered a large order 5 minutes before close, but I ordered a $30 order almost 45 minutes prior to closing. One item was a combo, which came in a large rice container. I wouldn't recommend them to anybody. Small portions are an understatement. Bad quality of food and being rushed is not good customer service. They should've just called back and rejected the order . As I arrived, they were all outside loading into their vans at 9:17 P.M. while staring and what I assumed was saying negative things. Maybe they couldn't afford to close on Thanksgiving, who knows; I don't think it being Thanksgiving and them working was the issue, as many other complaints seem to seal the deal with what I dealt with tonight. OH, then after placing the order, I received a text saying they received the order and then one minute later received another saying my order was ready for pickup . I won't be returning. For a Chinese takeaway place I was very surprised when I stopped in for a late weeknight dinner. For you hisory buffs, Dennis reports that this building used to be a KFC! I got a combination plate which had boneless spareribs, pork lo-main, and chicken fingers, and an egg roll. The order was cooked fast and the service friendly. I dining room had a number of tables, all were clean and the floor clean as well. When I got home, the meal was really good. Not greasy, and very fresh tasting. It looked and tasted like a lot of care went into the meal. I will definably go back for more, I think that Mei-Hoo up the road was the best place for takeout, and after eating here I am not so sure. read more

I knew walking in that the reviews weren't great. But Hon Sue Gai is my weakness, not many places have it, and so I took a chance. I ordered the above meal, two soups, a small chicken fried rice and scallion pancakes. I was a bit surprised when the bill was $42, as it didn't seem to add up. Then, when I was given a suitcase of food, I understood. When I ordered two soups, without specifying a size, the man chose to interpret my request as two large vats of soup, able to feed several families - rather than the more reasonable assumption that someone ordering 1 meal and 1 appetizer was unlikely to want 6 soups with that. Yeah, I didn't specify...my fault, but this felt like a money-grab. He didn't chose to inquire when I placed my order, to him, in person, either. So, the quality....the quality.... I have had Hon Sue Gai at dozens of places, small and large, gourmet and hole-in-the-wall, for over 40 years. I have never had an order as gross as this. What I expect: breaded chicken fingers, tons of vegetables, moderate amount of thick sauce What I received: thickly breaded something (I assume it may, in a past life, have been in the proximity of a chicken; but this was a firm/hard, chewy tube, with no flavor, and odd crunchy spots), almost no vegetables, floating in a casket of watery soup. I mean FLOATING. When I had choked down the meal, I had to exit the car and pour (and it ran like water) 2/3 of a container of remaining liquid down a grate, before disposing of the container. The scallion pancakes were well below average (about 3.5/10), with few scallions and little flavor beyond warm grease. They had no character, nothing to recommend them and, were all scallion pancakes like this, I would never order them again. I might not anyway. The wanton soup was surprisingly good, all things considered. Think: average. The broth did not have the expected warm dishwater taste, instead flavored by chicken stock, soy sauce and a skim of grease - perhaps a bare hint of vegital taste. The vegetables were scarce, but present, and the wantons were standard, with no discernible gristle in them. For this dining experience, a sure win. Having said that, however, drinking soup should not remind one of eating a doughnut. You know, that trashy, trans-fat flavor some doughnuts and fried goods have? If you know it, you know what I mean, if you don't, you won't care anyway. It was strongly present. The cistern (commode?) of hot and sour soup was inedible. It was full of little unidentifiable bits of ground meat. Perhaps crumbled hamburger (odd choice for a Chinese restaurant), perhaps something other? Either way, not standard for this type of soup, not expected and not in any way, shape or form a welcome addition. Ended up tossing almost the whole thing. The mystery bits were too well-incorporated to fully remove, too gross to eat, and had flavored the entire mess at any rate. Finally, the chicken fried rice. Eh.. some of the chicken tasted OK, some tasted beyond its sell-by date. There were very few added ingredients, an onion or water chestnut here and there. And the whole thing felt like it had been coated in MSG or something. I had to thoroughly wash my lips and mouth after eating, with soap, several times, to get the film off. I will say that, while the duck sauce was too sweet and not overly otherwise flavorful, there was a lot of it, and it did not appear to be artificially colored. I'm really trying to find a few silver linings here! It took us two days to eat what wasn't tossed out as "non-food", and I can't say sticking with it helped me live a long and healthy life. I really hate to waste food, but, as another reviewer suggested, I might have been better off tossing the entire meal, after the first few bites. I am now an older and wiser man, with an even older and wiser liver, stomach lining and arteries. I was out in the area on a business trip for a few days and stumbled upon this place. After checking the Yelp reviews I wasn't too sure about this small little backwoods Chinese spot but I and some co-workers with me were hungry and it was here. I'm actually quite glad we stopped in. We decided to go traditional style and ordered quite a few dishes so everyone could share. We also figured that if some of the dishes were good and others bad this would help save the experience. Surprised we were. Everything was FRESH. Everything was TASTY. Also of equal importance and often lacking in similar joints - everything was HOT and delivered to the table at the same time. No waiting around for rice to eat with your delicious spicy seafood or hot pancakes to get your Mushu on. Frankly - LIT. We ordered the Mushu Pork (they called Mooshi but whatever), Shrimp w/ black bean sauce, South Winds, singapore noodles, szechuan scallops, seafood islander and diamond head. All the dishes were pretty fantastic but the shrimp w/ black bean sauce and diamond head dishes were AMAZING. We also had a few appetizers and I highly recommend both the crab rangoon and the peking ravioli and the fried jumbo shrimp were decent. I would skip the spareribs and chicken wings. Nothing special at all there in an otherwise great experience. The soups are pretty good also - standouts were hot & sour and... *shudders* chicken noodle. A surprisingly good chicken noodle in a Chinese restaurant. Push me to the edge my friends... OK - so I've ranted about this place for a bit and honestly we all surprisingly loved it. Still surprised. So what's not so great? There are a few things... It's in the middle of nowhere. It's tiny. The drink choices are a bit underwhelming but they did have a fair selection. The green tea was tasty though. The seating could be a bit more comfortable but the food made it all worth it. The owner/employees were all super friendly too. Family run place apparently. Especially friendly was a kinda younger kid they jokingly referred to as I think "Data wan kenobi"? I think it was a play off obi wan and wontons and he seemed to be their techy family member. When Bob Loo retired all those years ago, I looked for the heir apparent. For sit-down Chinese, the pickin's were (and still are) pretty slim indeed in Salem. My wife visited Lucky Dragon a few times and enjoyed it, and I thought it was pretty decent. It's not really a sit-down restaurant; there are actually less tables and chairs at the Dragon that you see at most Chinese take out restaurants. The decor is gauche--a converted KFC without much of the exterior changed. While a few Asian restaurants have come and gone not 300 feet from the front door of Lucky Dragon--festooned with fancy decorations, full bars, and whatever else they threw at it, the Dragon has survived them easily. Why? The only reason I can think of is the food. The food is actually quite good... enjoyable, even! Don't get me wrong. This is not Gourmet inspired cuisine. It's Chinese take-out, plain and simple. The Dragon isn't aiming sky high; it's just providing good food that tastes freshly made at decent prices. For food orders over $10, they will even deliver it to you! What's not to love about the place? It's nestled on Rt. 28 in Salem. You can easily miss it if you don't know that you're looking for a free-standing Chinese take-out place on a busy commercial strip (hint: it's on the eastern side of the road across the street from Buchika's ski shop). Make sure you get a take-out menu when you are there, and call your order in the next time you go--even have them deliver it to you. One star for the bathroom because there is one for the public. It is not clean. The food is mostly filler, pork fried rice is mostly brown rice- no veggies not even onion and not many pieces of pork. Lo mein is almost all noodles barely any veggies at all and scant amounts of chicken, there wasn't even sauce on the overlooked noodles. I used to go here religiously but things have gone south fast. Last nights Chinese takeout fail was thrown into the rubbish- I didn't even want to see it in the morning. Hands down, my favorite chinese food place, in a post-Bob Loo's world. Good food and good service, plus I give them credit for lasting almost 20 years in a spot that was vacated by Kentucky Fried Chicken when it moved north on 28. In a town like Salem, many other businesses can come and go, yet there's Lucky Dragon, still alive and well. I always get the same combo (Chicken wings, steak, pork lo mein and ribs) because this is the ONLY Chinese place with a combo. plate that doesn't come with that one thing you absolutely hate. (As my brother said, every other chinese place is like 'Pork fried rice, chicken wings, peking ravioli, and squirrel testicles', or something like that.) Having said that, its not often that I actually go IN the actual building, but I decided to cash-in a gift certificate here recently after a long miserable day with no lunch or dinner, working for a certain vacuum cleaner company in Salem. (I quit the next day.) The place was empty, (9:30 on a Wednesday evening), but you had the feeling a mob of people could show up at any moment. Fast delivery! I ordered hot and sour soup and the Pad Thai dish L15. The hot and sour soup was good. The Thai dish had 2 shrimp and maybe 2 oz of chicken. The rest was 3-4 cups of noodles. It does say Chines Restaurant so maybe that is better. This tastes nothing like any Thailand dish I have eaten in country or out. But I was hungry so ate some of it. Maybe the Chinese is better. Nice people, easy parking, but one of many Chinese restaurants in the area with barely edible dishes. We ordered our usual test dishes and, as usual, this restaurant also failed us. The chicken was not fresh (rather dry) and the pieces were ridiculously large, almost like full filets. That is not what a real Chinese should serve, which is small pieces.. The pieces were soaked in soy sauce, so salty, although the dish should not have had any. The rolls were greasy. Portions were very large, but that was also necessary as they are expensive (we paid almost $30 for a portion of two small rolls and two chicken dishes. For that kind of money there are plenty of sit down restaurants around, with better quality. The packaging of the rice is plain wrong, so it falls out of the styrofoam box the moment you open it. read more

As a Chinese, my favorite Chinese Take out food is Beef Broccoli, because it healthy and pretty tasty. Also, trust me, it is not so hard to make. BUT, Lucky Dragon failed it!!! The beef was too hard to chew, I am pretty sure they use the wrong part of the beef to cook, that's why. The broccoli pieces were to large to bite, and they really need to make it smaller. Overall, the food was plain, I had to put some soy sauce on it. I was visiting this area, and I needed to find a place to eat at late night(11pm). Kinna disappointed. I enjoy the food in the sense that it is not the best I have ever had but it is good enough that I have become a repeat customer. They have a decent selection, reasonable prices and good portion sizes. The dining area leaves a lot to be desired which is why I always choose take out.
