I had the pleasure of hosting a business meeting at The Lucky Monk recently. I'm based in Rolling Meadows and we had a client based in Barrington so we needed a convenient location close to their offices. Having never heard of or been to The Lucky Monk I was able to find them on Google Maps and reviewing their website I was able to confirm that the ambiance was appropriate for a business causal meeting (Kudos on the website design). We arrived at 12:30 and parking was convenient. The hostess was very friendly and the severs where attentive to our needs and found that right balance between providing excellent service but not interrupting the meeting unnecessarily. We weren't able to try the beer but what was really impressive was the menu. There are many unique twists to some very typical dishes and my sandwich (Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich) was amazing, probably one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I've ever eaten. In fact our client and all of my colleagues marveled at their order and I believe we all ordered different dishes. It is a good location for business meetings and I can also imagining taking my wife there for a date night. As a commercial insurance agent that does insure restaurants with brewing exposures I (selfishly...:) wish I had the opportunity to learn more about their insurance program. It seemed to me like this restaurant has the potential to be a very successful chain one day and I would love to help them find the right program. Regardless of that, I'll definitely be back! This is one of those truly special finds that i am SHOCKED has not been franchised or branched out more. The beer list is relatively extensive and on good rotation, the menu is amazing and delivers in both quality, quantity and price; somehow striking the holy trinity of balance. I ordered the grilled cheese hamburger which uses a grilled cheese sandwich on each side of the burger as bread. It was nothing short of spectacular. The appetizers were also on point and there is enough food here to easily split (tip your wait staff accordingly if you do) entrees. Any time someone comes in to town, this is my go to for fun and tasty eats. The wait staff was exceptional, even on a bustling saturday night, and when we were wavering on beer choices, our waitress didnt blink an eye in bringing us samples for free to help us choose. Looking for something a little different for a birthday dinner and they didn't disappoint. Reasonable wait for a Saturday night. Mgr was great about communicating about wait times and checking in. Food was AMAZING!!! Way exceeded our expectations. Our waitress, Lindsay, was so friendly and even helped me find a drink that was close to the menu but what I like. The two-star rating on Yelp translates to "Meh. I've experienced better." Which is sad to me because the "better" I've experienced was at the Lucky Monk not too long ago. Sadly the quality of the food has taken a noticeable drop in quality. Not sure if it's because of a new chef or the need to buy cheaper ingredients but it's simply not as good anymore. Best place to eat in the area. Burgers, pizza and tacos are all excellent choices. In house brews are delicious and cover all the basics with seasonal choices available year round. Guest taps expand the menu from local breweries that rotate often. Parking can be an issue during dinner time so carpool or allow some additional time. read more

I will say all the appetizers we tried were excellent and the beer menu is definitely robust and has something for everyone. However, water in this restaurant is HORRIBLE. It tasted like we were drinking lead. I thought it was just me until the other 3 people I was with made a face after taking a sip. I don't know if it's possible to have a "bad batch" of H2O but the lack of hydration available at this place makes me not want to go back, which is unfortunate because it's a great ambiance to hang out for a while with some friends. read more

Unfortunately, right after our party got home we all began to feel ill. Stomachs were turning and 2 of the 5 in the party started vomiting. Called another friend we saw there and they had a similar problem. Asked to speak with the manager. Was told i needed my receipt. I paid in cash so i didnt have one but was able to tell a girl Hostess that answered the phone where we were sitting who our waitress was what we ate and the total of our bill. We still have not had a manager call us back or address the fact that our party was sick. I left 3 stars because I am sure this is an isolated issue and the manager will be in contact with us to look into this. It was our 1st time there and it is a shame this happened. With a bill of $150. and change b4 tip you want a meal that doesn't leave you on the bathroom floor praying to your God for it to stop! I can not say enough good things about this restaurant. My husband and I are part of the Monk Society, we pay a monthly fee which includes a monthly bottle of seasonal beer, rewards cards and a fast track to the front of the line on a wait. The food is so delicious we recommend ordering the hummus with a side of gardenia. Service is always good and the beer is even better. read more

Went here for lunch a couple says ago. Got seat right away, no wait at all. Service was very good, had no problems or instances were I had to visually track down the server, she was always right there! I ordered the Grilled Cheese Burger and my Mom and Dad ordered the Chicken Salad Sandwich and the Beet and Goat Cheese Salad, respectfully. The food was amazing. You get massive portions, I never mind that because then I have an extra meal for the next day, and it was just as good. The price was very reasonable. You could go here for a date or just a group lunch, it's not extremely formal at all but it still nice and very very clean! I will be back for sure! read more

I was there last night with my wife. Ordered a Fallen Angel beer they make themselves. They were out of that beer. Ordered one of the $14 hamburgers and asked if I could substitute cheddar for provolone. Yeah, no problem. The hamburger shows up with cheddar. They then tell me they do not have provolone. I would have thought that issue would have been discovered in the kitchen. I asked for Swiss. No Swiss. I ended up asking for no cheese. The food was good. I had 3 Cardinal Sin beers. 2 of these beers were at the $3.50 happy hour price and I guess the third one was ordered at a time it was $5.50. I also upgraded to the fried pickles instead of fries for $2. You think they could have comp'd me the upgrade in the pickles or told me they gave me the third beer for the happy hour price or reduced my bill for the cost of having no cheese or frigging something. Nothing. Fellas, a $2 or $3 comp for the issues we had would have went a long way. You are also in the hospitality business. You should know this by now. read more

Hallelujah! A brew pub with great food, beer, service, and atmosphere! Lucky Monk has been a favorite spot for a while now...but I just realized recently that I had not given it a review on Yelp. My bad. To quote Chris Farley's character in Wayne's World 2 "Good food...good brew...good tunes! I'm gonna go pick a fight!" Although I WON'T be picking a fight, he pretty much nailed Lucky Monk in a nutshell. Below I'll breakdown what I enjoy by category, but I find it hard to believe you'll be disappointed if you color outside of these lines. The Food: - Smoked chicken wings appetizer - good luck sharing these because they're.....heavenly (I see what I did there). Great seasoning on the outside with brown sugar sweetness. Accompanying sauce is on point. These are the best smoked wings I've ever had, and I'm a KCBS certified BBQ judge. - Tacos - pick your fish and you can't go wrong. They're smaller, so keep that in mind when sharing - Fish n' Chips - Awesome! Nicely battered fish, good fries, tasty dipping sauce. Amen. - Honorable Mention.....Cheese curds - these aren't quite Wisconsin quality, but prettttyyy close - I'll take it, they're delicious - Confession: I've actually never had a burger here, but they look amazing, and I've heard great things. Please forgive my sin. The Beer (try them all & do a flight): - Cardinal Sin (Pilsner) - good starting point, crisp and refreshing - Tritica (Weiss Beer) - for the wheat fans, also tasty - Monk's Choice - here's where it gets interesting, this is the seasonal offering and typically awesome o Barrel aged barleywine - my most recent monk's choice selection (I bought a growler) The Atmosphere: - Depending on when you go, the patio area is very nice. You face away from the traffic of Barrington road, but you also don't get consumed by AMC or 90. We usually request to sit outside whenever possible - The bar is also great, and it's the plan when it's too hot or too cold to sit outside. Very comfortable, inviting, and accessible. - The music - I sometimes think I dropped my iPod in the parking lot, and they found it & plugged it in - I'm not tooting my own horn, I just meant that the music is more my taste than say (for example) a classic rock or country bar, which seems to be the norm these days. Praise the lord! All told, Lucky Monk is great. I haven't had a bad experience, and I wish I had spent more time here before moving away from the neighborhood. This place is a secluded little trove. That's one classy patio you got there. The hanging flora is a lovely touch. We went during the day. The patio ceiling is designed with paneling that maximizes a good breeze. Think of a ship sail, and you're sitting back and coasting along in your bar chair. There were 8 different microbrews. My partner had the Belgium wheat, and he was a big fan. I had this passion fruit one with a kick. Our server, Madison brought me over a water when I didn't ask for it. Hydration is key, so kudos. The food was unexpectedly good. I say unexpectedly because a lot of microbrews have good beers but not always the best food. This was not the case with the Lucky Monk. I was in a fishy kind of mood, so I ordered clam bisque and mussels. So filling and gorgeous presentation. Don't be afraid to ask for substitutions for fries (up charge included). They don't skimp out. Cheese curds and the chipotle ranch was a delightful combo. I will come back at night some time because I'd like to see your lighting and fire pit in action at some point. read more

DELICIOUS! I tried the 50/50 burger with sweet potato fries. It was very well cooked and had incredible taste. Massive burger with pulled pork and candied bacon. The staff was awesome as well. I've come here quite a bit over the past few years and I have always loved it! I used to get the mini fish tacos, but the last few times I came I ordered other items on the menu. My most recent trip here I ordered the fish tacos again and found out when the food came that they were two large tacos instead of 5 mini ones. I really didn't think anything of it at first, but the flavors were just really weird with this updated version of the fish taco. I honestly couldn't finish it and gave the rest to my boyfriend. The elote it came with was really good though! My boyfriend ordered a burger and fries and loved it. I will definitely be back, but will most likely stay away from the fish tacos.
